Is he a genius? Or is he just straight up crazy?

Dorian was having such a hard time pinpointing just which of the two best described the man known as Solomon Lear. No matter how he looked at it, the professor was brilliant in his infinite wisdom. He knew far more than any of them combined and seemed to be far more versed in a worldly aspect than they. But for all he knew, it was his methods that were questionable. Extreme does not come close to properly explaining it. Everything that has gone bump in the night at the school had found the man smack dab in the middle of it in one way or form whether by chance or design. Much remained a mystery even now, and it as the man ominously walked towards the door, placed the parchment thus and lifted his hand that Dorian knew.

There was much to fear.

"Tsukumogami..." he repeated while Lear taught them. It was a word that had chills tiptoeing up his spine, and as the tale continued Dorian found himself peering into the soulless nothing that was the face of the doll he held. He never bothered to ask the professor what he meant by they, for he had come to hazard guesses as to how the man's mind worked. He had named his Cabin Inferius, and from what Dorian knew of the creatures, they were everything that Professor Yornikovych's lessons pertaining to the laws of Transfiguration and their exception on Life warned against. Soulless creatures craving for that which they did not possess. A glance through the vanished door and a quick assessment of the runic markings along the walls and ceiling contradicted.

Words are power, and runes are a powerful spellform comprised of such powerful words. But then...why had the door been removed?

So the doll was his daughter's. The longer the boy stared down at the faceless mass in his hand the more he almost felt as if he was being watched. The chill never left, and it served to induce the persistence of slight goose pimples along his dorsum. Just as the professor mentioned their 'training', Dorian piped up with the question that the man seemed ready to answer, offering only a simple "dodge", whatever that meant. Dorian shrugged and continued to stare at the doll. And then he did the only thing that came to mind. He poked it. Right in the featureless face. There was no reaction, of course, which had him feeling rather disappointed. From all that the professor had just said, he was hoping that the doll was truly alive, though speech would have been difficult without a mouth.

Dorian was nothing if not imaginative.

He went to a corner in the room closer to his bunk, putting him near enough to Clarisse to be overheard as he slinked to the floor against the wall and continued watching the doll. "I'm going to call you Homunculus." Latin for "little person". An apt name given the circumstance. "Who knew Professor Lear had a daughter? Why would she even keep a doll without a face? What does he mean she chose the face? Am I supposed to decide what you look like?" Dorian started thinking, trying to imagine a little girl with subtle features belonging to Professor Lear. His daughter. Dorian was trying to imagine his daughter's face that he had never seen before on the doll. Try as he might, it was all subjective, for he knew not what she looked like. The other features of the doll such as the dress and the smell helped paint a picture in his mind.

But it was inaccurate.

Dorian looked up at the rest of the room at the others, wanting to see what they were all doing with their own toys. Nothing the professor said or did lacked meaning, that much he knew, but that did not put him in such a position to divine exactly what the meaning was behind it all. A faceless doll, a laughing top, a carousel wolf chase, a music box, a talking bear, and an action figure mimic. What did it all mean? "Are you guys having any luck with your toys?" He asked the room at large. "Mine sucks. She's doesn't do anything!" Dorian was resisting the urge to toss her across the room. Her. He was already addressing her with a designative pronoun. The chill never waned. Little did he know that all he was saying, all he was doing, was being monitored closely by something unseen.

The doll was present.

✸ Named the doll Homunculus.
Story: Homunculus is a powerful vessel that houses an onryō, or a vengeful spirit. It was born of Lear's daughter and the dark side she possessed that was never allowed to see the light of day. The spirit grew in power over the years while it remained in the presence of the little girl, slowly eating away at her darkness to sate its hunger. It loved back, as Lear said, but it was a love derived from pleasure at being fed. His daughter had wicked thoughts that he had never been given the chance to experience, for they were never given the chance to be set free as the doll absorbed them all. All her hate and envy, the doll took it all. His daughter chose the face, he said, but this too he got wrong. Children her age are more spiritually attuned than adults, so it wasn't that she chose the face, but rather, she could see the face of the spirit within the doll that appeared to her as a dear friend. The doll only speaks to those that the spirit latches onto [Dorian] as it feeds on their negative thoughts and feelings and grows in power. Eventually, the spirit will no longer require the vessel and may roam free.

The professor began speaking. He was talking about the toys they have claimed. They were Tsukumogamis. Which allowed them to have their magical effects. We're chocolate frogs Tsukumogamis too? They seem to know what they were doing when they hopped around but it was extremely frightening to see a piece of chocolate move which was one of the reason why Aurelia never ate them.

The professor then mentioned that the door was locked. Aurelia's lips twisted into a slight scowl. What if she needed to use the loo? The professor also explained that the door was locked so creatures couldn't enter. Aurelia knew what creatures they were. Infuri. The professor was jokig, at least Aurelia was convinced that he was.

The toys had belonged to someone. Many actually. Aurelia wondered why the professor was willing give the toys to a bunch of children so easily. The top was his as a boy. It represented wanderlust, the need to travel and explore. Did Aurelia have wanderlust? She had visited quite a lot of countries, her parents had brought her worldwide for vacations.

She let the toy fall to the ground, immediately after it did, it began spinning and sped to a corner of the room. It was so fast that Aurelia had trouble keeping track of where it was. It spun laughing, but she then realised it was speaking. She couldn't quite catch what the toy was saying, it was speaking a mile a second. The top was repeating a few words over and over again.

"Go" was one of them. " Adventure" and " Travel". It had wanderlust. Strangely, the toy spun near the old wooden door. It was like a dog, waiting for it's owner to open it so it could venture outside. Aurelia felt the need to let it out, she felt the urge to go outside herself. She didn't know why but she did know that the door was locked and there was no way she could open it.

Aurelia grabbed for the top. It took a few tries, it was as if the top didn't want to let her catch it. It stopped spinning once it was under her palm. Aurelia carefully scooped it up like the way she would for an injured bird. The side that faced up towards her coincidentally had the "sad face" painted on it.

"Je kunt niet naar buiten gaan. Het kan mogelijk zijn morgen." She spoke to it as if she was to a baby, her native language somehow taking over. She looked up, realising she was baby talking to a toy. What was happening?

Aurelia climbed back up to her bunk bed. It was late and she needed to sleep. The professor said something about training. It would be a long day ahead so it was best she rest. She was fluffing up the pillow when she heard someone call out.
Are you guys having any luck with your toys? Mine sucks, she doesn't do anything.
It was Dorian. He had the faceless doll in his hand. It might just be an ordinary doll, one that belonged to the professor's daughter. Aurelia remembered him mentioning that it loved back. All the other you'd were magical, it wouldn't be that Dorian's wasn't.

"Hey be nice to it Dorian. It might have feelings. Try hugging it or something. Maybe it might just... Um... Hug you back?" Aurelia suggested. It was the best she could think of.

She turned back around to fluff up her pillow before resting her head on it. She brought her knees close to her chest, curling herself into a partial ball like how she always did. The top was still in her hand, she brought it close to her chest as well, close to her heart. She somehow felt connected to it. Aurelia closed her eyes. It was going to be a long month.

[Je kunt niet naar buiten gaan. Het kan mogelijk zijn morgen] - you can't do out now. You might be able to do so tomorrow.

Yes, Solomon was a brilliant man, he could outsmart any 12 year old.

Solomon let the children get acquainted with their playthings. Some of the children had rather active imaginations. Indeed, he had a daughter once and indeed she died but she was not dead. Death would have been a kindness, the poor girl.

But he was not wrong in all things he thought. He would watch it and it would not move, it was when he blinked that it did. The head turned slightly askew now gazing forward. A leg cast at an awkward angle now straightened. Indeed, it did nothing whilst you watched but he would know not the things she did when his gaze landed elsewhere.

The Professor often joked but this was not one of those instances. People were sentimental creatures, if they were willing to admit that or not was another story entirely. The toys were the product of strong emotions; a desire. A yearning need, a trickling overflow of want or heart. It gave power because it was power, the soul had as much aptitude as muggle science but like science the implementation must be understood. Like many great inventions in the days past, noval magic was often stumbled upon unplanned.

Some would settle into bed, prepare for a long night's rest. Some would simply enjoy their new toy. But none would get to sleep through the night. Solomon took out a pot of coffee, he required the caffeiene.

At half past 10 o'clock it would start. A groan heard through the wall. A rough banging noise that rattled the space that was once a door. It was incredibly dark outside but the cabinlight offered a warm glow from its simple wood paned windows. Outside there was no visible, obvious disturbance. At least not yet. The clammor was coming from the solid, windowless wall as of yet.

"Look's like they are a bit early," Solomon commented non-chalantly. He took another sip of his coffee.

If one of the students looked out the window long enough they would see something in the darkness. A gaunt figure with wild hair and bare feet skuttled across the grass on all fours. Their pallid flesh seemed almost luminescent in the moonlight. It was wearing tattered robes, muddied and dark. The viewer would not be able to tell whether it was a man or a woman. It would stop, sniffs the air, and let out an inhuman gutturnal noise. Then it would crawl off into the darkness, but the view would know that single baleful creature was not the only one present. Something was scratching at the opposite wall.

"Oh no... they might get in," Solomon was not getting up from his chair. This was not his problem, this was their problem.

No post from anyone in a week. Assuming that this thread is inactive. Will submit the would have been syllabus for this cabin:

The building was going to be attacked by 3 zombie like creatures, highly susceptible to our favorite thing FIRE which does double damage. Some lore discussion, Solomon admits that he is purposefully training you students because he fears that you might be in danger but is unwilling to elaborate. Some discussion on the concepts of runes laced into the posts. Minor puzzle that I am gonna reuse somewhere else since it does not appear that I am going to get to use it here.

Better luck for us next time.

But in any case, feel free to say the above is what happened. No clue if something more dramatic would happen, I give you guys the opportunity to make things worse (with fire) so without RPing it out I cannot add anything specific and interesting like that.
