“Sorry, mate, can’t say I pay much attention to your love life,” Nicholas shrugged. He liked Martin well enough, she’d made a proper fool of him in his first and only duel, but she’d been nice enough to put him out his misery with a true fight, and had sent him a bunch of chocolates after the fact.

Of course, the petty word flinging and thinly barbed insults that the boys had shared was nothing to Aurora. Nicholas didn’t realise she’d drawn her wand until she’d already cast the spell, and it was all the boy could do to watch in somewhat stunned silence as she pivoted from casting projectile magic at Gray to berating him with an all-too-long speech. It wasn’t at all what Nicholas had expected, an utterly long diatribe about how great Nicholas was. For his part, the Gryffindor could not help but feel the heat rushing to his cheeks, the blush taking form. If there was one thing that Aurora wasn’t, it was a shrinking violet, and for not the first time he found himself equal parts honoured and embarrassed to be dating her.

Still, he couldn’t allow himself to be distracted by his infatuation. There was still a battle of insults going on.

“Saving the bravery for the pitch,” Nicholas shrugged, with forced nonchalance, “Can’t very well go about knocking you out in the Great Hall. ‘Specially not if your girlfriend’s a prefect.”

Nicholas rose to his feet, giving the cat’s tail a gentle brush as it passed him, the movement synchronous in their simplicity.

“How about we settle this out there, then?” It was a simple enough offer, the violence behind the words was plain.

“Been a pleasure, truly,” Sarcasm dripped off his every word, before he turned a much more pleasant look back to Aurora, “Want to get out of here? Should be a pretty nice morning, shouldn’t it?”

He was the boyfriend of Santario Martin? The same Santario that put her in detention with Glarrington? It was quite shocking news, really. She’d expect someone as graceful as her would pick someone with a better manner. To each their own, maybe he was nice behind closed doors.

She wanted to give him a smack to wipe off that grin off his face with a brick. Clearly, he was making fun of her passionate speech about how amazing Nicholas really was. When she thought his remarks were over, it turned out he had a bigger mouth than she thought. Being a captain herself, she kept records on who won on each match and what he said threw her off. He made it as if he was the best of the best and was able to destroy her dear grumpy ol’ boyfriend. “Oh really?” Aurora let out an exaggerated gasp, “Nick, remind me again who won in the first match, Slytherin versus Gryffindor?” It was a rhetorical question, without waiting for anyone to reply, she chimed in again, “AH THAT’S RIGHT! Gryffindor!, and the match against Hufflepuff?” She turned to face the obnoxious newspaper boy, one hand was on her left ear, acting as if she heard an audible sound from somewhere. “Did you hear that? Hufflepuff won!” Aurora was on top of the world, well, in this case, the bench. It felt good to rub his failures on his face but knowing how she was, she’d probably feel guilty later on. “You can’t make promises for his safety but I think you need to worry about your own safety first” Reality check… checked. Aurora was grinning ear to ear thinking that she just made his words bite his own arse.

It might be the best day of the week. Defending her grumpy gremlin even though she might not make the right point still felt awesome. Then Nicholas offered to skedaddle and continue the date somewhere else. Of course she can’t refuse. Why would she? “Aye aye captain!”
