Sitting quietly
Bella traipsed into the Great Hall. The first few days of her first year had been difficult for her. She was finding it very difficult to speak to people and her deep fear of anybody finding out about her parents was keeping her from relaxing even in her own dorm. Her older siblings Orion and Luna, fourth years, had spoken with her in the Gryffindor common room but they had their own friends. Her other older brother that still attempted the school, Ozzy, was in Slytherin and he was far to busy during his final year of school to spend much time with her either. It was almost funny to Bella, that even here, in this place that so many had called home, surrounded by hundreds of people; she had never felt more alone.
Finding the Great hall almost empty, besides a dozen or so faces that she didn't really recognise, Bella chose a seat near the end of the table and slumped down into it. There was still a little food left over from lunch time and she grabbed herself a plateful. That was definitely a plus to being here. The food was always delicious and served in huge quantities. Bella did not do well when she was hungry. As she began to eat, the doors to the great hall opened again and another student walked in by their self.

Jennifer walked confidently into the Great Hall, alone. Her first few days at being at Hogwarts were great! She loved exploring the castle on her free time and found a few secret passageways... Although she didn't have many friends, hardly any at all, the students were nice to her, and she liked the professors, they seemed to care a lot for their students, and were pretty informative . Jennifer still felt really strange to be at Hogwarts though. It was so difficult to live a normal life, and all of a sudden, for everything to change. She also didn't seem to understand the other students. They seemed so at home, and Jennifer felt all alone why was that? 'How do they feel at home?' She thought, thinking hard, 'Is it because I'm half-blood, and I don't have that much power? Am I a squib?' Jennifer hoped that wasn't the case, but still thought about that. She still continued to doubt herself, and sat down at the edge of the table. She saw another girl on the edge of the table, she seemed so sad, "Hey!" Jennifer said with enthusiasm, trying to cheer up herself and the other girl. "What's your name? I'm Jennifer!"

Bella looked back up from the table to a girl who had sat down next to her. She introduced herself as Jennifer. Bella became nervous at the girls enthusiasm to talk to her as it wasn't something she was used to. Most people would smile or acknowledge her in lessons but nobody really went out of their way to speak to her. Bella decided that it could never hurt to have a friend and swallowed down the anxious lump that had formed in her throat.
"Hi, um, I'm Bella" She gave a small smile. She did recognise the girl from the Gryffindor common room and she seemed to be friendly enough. Bella was never worried about being at Hogwarts, she knew she belonged here, she just didn't like being lonely. It wasn't something she was used to with so many siblings back at home. But maybe this could be the start of a friendship.
Bella turned her body to be facing the girl, appearing more inviting and friendly than her previous body language had. She then pushed the bowl of left over chicken wings towards the girl.
"These are left over from lunch, you should try them they are amazing," Bella commented in an attempt to create more conversation.

Jennifer felt really relieved when the girl didn't totally ignore her. Most of the students would ignore her, Jennifer still had no idea why. But this girl seemed very different. The girl said her name was Bella, and Jennifer gave her a smile and said, "Nice to meet you, Bella!" Bella seemed nervous, as Jennifer watched her, but after a while, she looked more comfortable. She hoped she wasn't scaring her. Jennifer could use a friend. She continued to look at Bella, who pointed out a bowl of chicken wings, who pushed it towards her, saying that they were amazing. Jennifer smiled, and decided to try them. 'Why not? I never really seem to eat good food when I pick it out myself.' She said to herself and, took a small bite of the chicken. Jennifer was amazed, they had so much flavor, it was just perfect. 'Darn those were amazing!' She thought. Jennifer looked back at Bella, grinned, and gave her a thumbs up, still eating the delicious chicken wings. When she had finished, she said, "Oh my, that was the best wings I had ever tried!" Jennifer smiled and had a good feeling that she wanted Bella as a friend.

Bella giggled a little at the reaction Jennifer had to the wings. Hogwarts really did know how to do good food. She has always loved good food, but she never imagined that of all of the things she would love about Hogwarts, that the food would be top of that list. Still it was nice to know that when it all became too much for her she could always resort to drowning her sorrows in food, a habit she had eagerly learned from her sister Iyla.
Bella's lack of good people skills led to a few seconds of awkward silence while she thought of what she should say next. Should she ask Jennifer questions about herself? Should Bella start by talking about herself? Did they talk about lessons? It was all quite new to Bella who had only ever really spoken with her brothers and sisters as well as their house elves before she came to Hogwarts. Jennifer giggled softly when Bella said the Fat Lady's sing was awful, "Yes I heard her sing. It was-" She paused unable to find a word good enough to describe the Fat Lady's horrible singing, "Terrifying in fact, never before in my life, until last night, I had had heard someone sing that bad. She was even worse than me!" Jennifer giggled, and remembered the horrible screeching the Fat Lady was 'singing', "I wasn't even able to sleep because of her." She smiled, and continued to eat the delicious wings that was now her favorite food. Jennifer felt at ease with Bella, this was like the first time she hadn't stressed about anything. Usually, she felt nervous when meeting new people, but Bella was so much easier to talk to than others. Jennifer decided to get to know her fellow Gryffindor better, she had seen her around the Gryffindor common room a few times, and had seen her a few times in her classes. Also, Jennifer was already liking Bella, "So, do you like Gryffindor?" She waited to see Bella's reaction, and hoped she didn't scare her. Having a good friend like Bella was what Jennifer had wanted all her life.

Bella was a little unsure how to answer the question at first. She wasn't sure if she wanted to tell Jennifer all about her family quite yet, but she supposed that a friendship had to go both ways and she had to start somewhere.
"I do like Gryffindor, although I wasn't sure I would get put here at first. My whole family have been Slytherins for generations. My brother older brother Felix being put into Ravenclaw was a disappointment for my parents. Then Orion and Luna, they're twins - fourth years, were put into Gryffindor, the first of my family to do so since like 1200 or something. Luckily my parents haven't been around for the last 6 years or so and they never found out what house the three of us were put in. There's just something about being in Gryffindor that kind of makes me feel a bit..." Bella couldn't quite think of the word to describe it "I don't know, I guess a bit trapped. Like I have to be brave and courageous and always put others before me because those are Gryffindor traits, and I'm just not always like that, you know? But It's ok I guess, people are all quite friendly in Gryffindor. And I guess it's a chance for me to prove I'm not like my mother."
Bella stabbed her fork into one of the chicken wings on her plate at the thought of being anything like her mother. She cringed a little when she realised how long she had been speaking about herself and asked the same question of Jennifer.
"What do you think about Gryffindor?"

Jennifer nodded when Bella told her about her family, and the house traits, she understood it was hard. "Well, so far, I like Gryffindor. Common room is great and it's by the Quidditch field!" Jennifer smiled, "I like playing sports." Refocusing, Jennifer said, "Like you, I wasn't sure I would be put in here at first. I'm a half-blood, my mom is a witch and my father is a muggle. My mother was a Ravenclaw. And when she died, all the magic in my family was forgotten. My dad taught me to be brave and daring. I guess that's why I was put in Gryffindor." She smiled weakly and started again, "Sometimes I feel like I was put in the wrong house. I'm not always brave, or daring. I can be other things too. I can intelligent, brave, friendly and cunning. I'm not just brave, I'm other traits too." Jennifer looked back at Bella and apologized, "Sorry if I'm being too selfish." She looked down at her food and sighed. "What's your favorite class?" She looked back at Bella and smiled, trying to cheer up both of their spirits. Jennifer knew that Bella was having a hard time, especially with family. She wanted to help her get her mind off everything that bothered her.

As Josh entered the Great Hall, he wanted to do something fun for a change. After all the troubles a Muggle-Born has caused him, he needed something fun to do. As he ventured through the Great Hall avoiding anyone who might confront him, he first sees his siblings.... again. They rolled their eyes at Josh as he passed by them. He goes a little further and sees two young Gryffindor witches having fun eating their food and talking. Well there's my fun! Right here. Time to torment some Gryffindors hehehe. Josh approached the two Gryffindors and was about to say something but as he was, he overheard their conversation.

Bella was about to answer Jennifer's question when a boy came over and sat next to them. She had seen him enter the hall looking bored and slightly frustrated but she had paid him little attention. He was clearly a Slytherin, his robes indicating so, but something about his tone put Bella on edge. She certainly wasn't against making friends with people from other houses, but her defensive and confrontational nature meant that she had to find out what this boy wanted first. Discreetly grabbing hold of her wand in her pocket, in case the boy was going to try and prank them, she turned to face him, giving an apologetic look to Jennifer for putting the conversation on hold. Bella wasn't sure how well Jennifer would handle confrontation and something made Bella want to protect her new friend, so she sat slightly forward, almost shielding Jennifer from this boy.
"Yeah, and what's it to you?" She questioned, obviously looking the boy up and down. Bella was not weak or helpless and she was not going to be treated like it. If the boy was trying to intimidate her then he wasn't doing a very good job. She gave him a pointed look as she waited for an explanation as to why he was there.
