Nicholas was never quite adapt at spells, but by the grace of good fortune, he found that his attempt to magically clean himself off worked wonders. Not for the first time, he wondered about the rumour he'd once heard about ancient purebloods, lack of plumbing, and the use of the scourgify spell, but swiftly dispelled the thought. The pigeons had been dealt with but there was still a race at hand. A race that Nicholas found himself falling behind in. It was odd, not leading out of the gate, but he supposed that was par for the course, after all, he was no longer the captain.

Wiping a hand through his now clean hair, the boy scowled, he could at least assist his team tow in still. He was more than capable of such a feat.

Nicholas made for quite the eyesore; with his lanky, boyish frame bespeckled in bird excrements. But much to the relief of his team (or Xailah, at the very least) the scrubbing bubbles from his wand began to do their job, squeaking away until he was semi-presentable once again. And although he pulled through all shiny and clean, a permanent stain was left in the minds of the surrounding racers. Or again, maybe it was just Xailah who was particularly repulsed by the whole display. Not wanting to think too much about it further, the metamorph pressed ahead, hoping to gain more momentum which would aid in passing through the upcoming obstacles.

She was less than pleased to find another patch of trees laying in wait once the pigeons cleared. Like the foliage that had come before it, it would prove dense but not nearly as challenging to navigate. Still, Xailah suffered a few nicks here and there. Nothing that time or a quick spell wouldn't heal.

On the other side of the trees, a waterfall had come into view through some fog. Ah. She thought she had heard one a few ways back. Unlike her last encounter with the waterfall, she would be prepared for this one. Fists tightened around Delta's shaft, ensuring a secure grip. Her willowy form hunkered, almost flattening across the length of the broom. Broom and rider rocketed through the curtain of water. Xailah gasped lightly when the cold sensation hit her relentlessly, making the cuts on her face sting. But, she pushed onward in spite of the shock.

When she finally broke through the downpour of Adam's Ale, she looked back to see if any of her teammates had made it through as well. She didn't see any yet, in fact, there was only one other racer nearby: Ravenclaw's Bloom Silverton. To Xailah, Bloom was a passing face. Most of those in her year were. But, it was always a treat to run into some of them outside of classes, and during shared activities.

Especially when they regarded one another as... old acquaintances, rather than peers who had stuck around for six years. Xailah wasn't sure what to expect when she pulled alongside Bloom, perhaps a flinty silence, if anything at all. She was pleasantly surprised, to say the least, when Bloom did say something.

Xailah? Afraid of the dark? Pshaw! She thrived in it! Still, she appreciated the light-hearted joke. It was nice to know someone could race and still make it seem like a friendly activity. These things weren't meant to be all that serious after all. "Likewise Silverton!" The laugh which followed was a throaty one.

Together the two girls advanced into the gaping, calcified maw. Xailah immediately let out a knee-jerk call of alarm when she saw the elder Ravenclaw racer heading straight for the jagged lip of the cavern. "Oh Bloom! Watch out for the-"

Whack!

Euugh. A soft groan escaped the metamorph's throat as a stalactite grazed the side of her own head. "Stalactites..."

Harper had fallen at the waterfall, literally right off of her broom. She was beyond embarrassed and felt sad because so far she hadn't been able to redeem herself from the last race when she had gotten stuck in the vines. Luckily, before she had lost all hope, Clair had swooped in and rescued her. Now, she was on Clair's broom which wasn't the most ideal, but she was glad she wasn't without a broom entirely. She would just have to stay with Clair for the time being, and be okay with that though it was pretty embarrassing for her.

Looks like the pigeons weren't on his side after all. After saving Harper from her unfortunate encounter with pigeon droppings, karma would find Ari and do the same to him. He felt his stomach lurch inside of him, and he almost vomited his porridge and orange juice, but he managed to hold it together and turn his focus back to the race. But the focus he could conjure was not enough to save him from starting one of his infamous tree-hugging bouts. It was becoming something of the norm for him to bump into trees throughout the races, as it has happened at least one in every race he'd flew in. If anything good was to come from that, perhaps he'd gain a sliver of fame for being the eagle that couldn't fly through trees.

You know, life can get lonely in a race when you decided to act like a flying trebuchet. Hugh found himself cutting through wind as his thoughts came and went at equal speeds. There was no real point to him hurling rocks or branches at shrinking silhouettes on the horizon. He remembered his days in Quidditch, where he had been the team's keeper for a bit. Deliberately, he had asked not to play as a beater. As he despised the violence that came with both the role and the association of his bloodline. He heard, far too often, the tales of a terrifying giant in Quidditch that would one shot people. Plucking them out one by one as if they had been sitting ducks. Healy was, of course, quite a bit bigger than Hugh. Which, given he himself was closing in on nine feet, was starting to get insane.

But then broomracing came along, and by the time the first race was there, he had changed. The violence needed a way out of his system. If there was no outlet for his many frustrations, then he was forced to boil them up, and that was just bad for everybody. Nope, no bottled up emotions made for a happy giant, and a happy giant meant a happy life... for others mostly.

So when the (second) rock he had thrown at Bloom was easily evaded, he was left to smile in her direction as he carefully kept his own tree broom steady. With a wild grin stuck on his windswept face, the giant pushed both his legs against the tree, rose up and screamed back against the howling winds. His deep and resonating voice transitioned into bellowing laughter. "HAHAHA! We're eating birds tonight no matter what lions! PIGEOIN OR EAGLE, I'LL HAVE MY MEAL!"

Della evaded the angry flock of pigeons, no problem. The commotion behind her told her that two other players were not as lucky—she hoped it wasn't her team. She knew Marina and Hugh were somewhere behind. Next, she entered the dense patch of trees, and once again, evaded every truck, branch, and twig, no issues. Her flying had never been better. As she entered an open stretch of the course, she could see Nick and Xailah in front of her. They looked unharmed and were moving fast, with the elder girl in the lead.

Then everything went white.

The fog.

Della let her guard down and now she had no idea which way she was flying. She could be going backward for all she knew. She moved in the direction she thought was straight and frantically searched for another player's figure to guide her the right way.

Though skillfully cast, Hunter's flipendo goes wide as Xailah races forward at top speed. Using her broom to her advantage, she weaves and ducks around through the obstacles, trying to evade attacks - but her speed almost gets her in trouble. Good thing she's fast on her feet, or her broom as it were, deftly diving to the right and letting the flipendo fly out into the fog. "Almost!" cried the disappointed moderator, who wished that he could have seen Xailah shunted back into the waterfall for a little swim. Ah, well. There's always more where that came from.

UNIT 5 - Easy Trees
Accuracy DC to evade the trees: 9

Hugh’s rolls: d20 (12,9,10) + 9 Acc - 4 Spd = 17, 14, 15 Three successes!

An innocent grove of trees is victimized by a brutish half-giant as Hugh plows effortlessly through the branches, sending shrapnel snapping off in every directions. No twigs, no matter how sharp, can penetrate his thick hide, though there's a few gross ones that leave sap or something sticking to his clothes. At least none of it got in his thorn wounds.

UNIT 6 - Poopy Pigeons

Hugh and Marina pass under the pigeons.

Both Hugh and Marina suffer 50 damage and are covered in poop, too gross to help them.

None are spared by the barrage of pigeon droppings that rains from the heavens whenever innocent players pass through Unit 6. The moderator cackles with glee as Hugh and Marina suffer the same fate as many of their fellow racers, with their nice little racing uniforms getting fully pelted with pigeon poops. "Nyehehe," the moderator said, his impish giggling amplified tenfold by the charm he was using for his voice. "Those pigeons really need a better diet."

UNIT 7 - Hard Trees
Accuracy DC to avoid trees: 19

Hugh’s rolls: d20 (2,2,10) + 9 Acc - 4 Spd = 7, 7, 15 3 failures.
Marina’s rolls: d20 (10,15,18) + 11 Acc - 4 Spd = 17, 22, 25 One failure.

Hugh fails thrice for 75 damage. 1413/1700 HP remaining.
Marina fails once for 25 total damage. 735/900 HP remaining.

Paving the way for Marina, Hugh continues to barrel through the branches, shearing them clean off the trees as little Marina trails in his wake. It's substantially easier for her, owing to the fact that she was riding in the trail of the second biggest student at Hogwarts. No doubt there would need to be some plant-growing charms used to restore those before the next race across the grounds.

UNIT 10 - Light Fog
Accuracy DC to navigate fog: 13

Marina’s accuracy and evasion are halved for round 4, 5, and 6.

Despite being the least interesting obstacle to watch, the fog was no less deadly than any other. Poor Marina seemed disoriented on her way out of it, while Nick and Ari sailed through undeterred by the poor visibility and conditions.

UNIT 10 – Clair + Harper blatch Della
Sharing a broom with Harper, Clair blatches into Della.

Clair and Harper successfully blatch Della, and she hits the ground in unit 10.

And of course, in the fog, all manner of things can happen. While the spectators might not have seen much of it, there was a round of gasps from the crowd as Della Barfield plummeted out of a particularly thick cloud and landed tumbling across the ground. Clair and Harper had sure been in there a long time - perhaps there had been an accidental collision?

UNIT 11 - Moderate Waterfall
Strength DC to bear the waterfall: 17

Ari falls harmlessly into the water below.

While Nick's massive muscles made it impossible for him to fail at such a piddly little waterfall, Ari had obviously not been doing his sit ups all summer, and unfortunately lost his grip underneath the weight of the waterfall. Into the water he fell with a splash. At least it wasn't as bad as Della's landing.

UNIT 12 - Moderate Narrow Passage
Accuracy DC to avoid hitting your head: 18

Nick suffers 60 damage. 990/1200 HP remaining.

Just past the waterfall, Nick knocks some water out of his wet mane by banging his head off the entrance to the maze. At least he never had much going on up there in the first place.

UNIT 13 - Moderate Maze

Two rolls are made, or else the player remains in the maze for that many rounds.

Nick is stuck in the maze for one round and will need to roll again to get out.

The maze provided a sense of mystery for spectators as they watched three racers enter, but only two leave. While Bloom and Xailah had good enough sense to figure out where to go, poor Nick might be stuck in there for a while. Only time will tell.

Zooming headlong out of a maze and into the fog was enough to make you dizzy, and it showed in Bloom and Xailah's flying as the two of them threw themselves out above the lake, clutching their broomsticks. That wouldn't make things any easier for poor Bloom, who already looked a bit worse for wear after her harrowing encounter with the half-giant.

It's a matter of luck as the two evenly matched racers tumbled through a narrow passage, with Bloom narrowly clipping the edge of the stony tunnel as they pass through yet another obstacle on their crash course.

Ah, some much needed rest. Both team's front-runners were caught like flies in the web of vines, giving them some time to catch their breath and orient themselves before they had to face the more frightening denizens of this race track. Although, it was really a toss-up whether anyone wanted to deal with a bunch of ferocious Ravenclaws, an angry half-giant, or the giant squid.

Clair smiled a little, their blatch had worked, that meant that there was one team member down for the other team. Maybe the race would turn in their favour, maybe, just maybe. Clair really hoped that they would win this race, cause if her team did not then it would be a very tragic scene for the ravenclaws.

Harper had felt a lot less overwhelmed with many things happening to get this race. Unlike last race where she was constantly getting hit and then got stuck in the those vines, she was doing well. That is, ignoring the fact that she got knocked off her broom at the waterfall. That was still something embarrassing but she thought that she would likely continue to be embarrassed during races but it was okay she still enjoyed them very much.

The maze was a terrible thing, Nicholas decided, as he struggled to navigate his way through it. Whatever person or creature who designed it deserved to have terrible things happen to them. His thoughts were bloody murder as his attempts to navigate through its labyrinthine walls proved for naught, a wrong turn seeing the shapes of Xailah and Bloom disappear well into the distance, and his own progress halting. He'd gone in a bloody circle!
