A Dark Ritual and Its Un-Waking Affect
Date: September 12th, minutes after dinner started in the Great Hall
One minute Alec had been in History of Magic with Opeila. It wasn't as if it had been an average day, but considering that she was unwell the last time he'd seen her, her being unwell almost seemed like the new normal. She was getting progressively worse in such a short amount of time and Alec worried for her. His voiced concerns were met with her agreeing, to think he thought it would take more convincing, perhaps it was the fact Opeila still insisted on attending class when she looked worse for wear. She looked to be on the verge of breaking down. Opeila admitted she didn't think she'd be getting better. She couldn't eat properly and she was sleeping for hours on end. Worried that one day she was going to fall asleep and not wake up again. Opeila told Alec everything. A boy had asked if she trusted him, he asked for her blood. He was going to use the blood for a ritual a hag told him to do. It was to save one of her best friends. Her words alone had Alec piecing together a conclusion, how many students at this school could possibly have been performing rituals? Opeila mentioned something else the boy needed, a scream of terror. The information was what sealed the deal. This involved Jack.
If Alec was being honest, he would have to admit to the fact he at first had planned to leave the situation on it's own. Surely Jack knew what he was doing, surely the ritual mess would result in an okay end. Opeila said she had a feeling that when she gave her blood to Jack she would be trading her health for her friends. Alec worried, though there wasn't much the Gryffindor could think to do. Or, at least, the only options he had weren't unlocked just yet. Alec told Opeila that Jack had his scream. She- er- fled. Maybe he should have gone after her, he didn't think it was his place. On his way to his next class, he'd happen upon a scene in the corridor like no other. A group of people crowded around a girl passed out on the ground. The girl wasn't just any girl, the girl was Opeila. As the day went on, her still not waking up he realized it was a problem far more serious than passing out. Hours had passed since, and the rest of the day had gone by in a blur, the event still fresh in his mind. The afternoon rushed by all too quickly, evening was here.
It was dinnertime and the smell of food wafted through the air making its way out of the great hall and throughout the castle. Alec was a man on a mission. When Opeila had passed out, certain avenues of hope dimmed and new options were unlocked. If Alec hadn't already distrusted what staff in the hospital wing were able to do, the notion was instilled in him now. Having been so blatantly disregarded when he had concerns for Opeila's safety. Alec might have been overreacting, however, it was concerning to help the nurse carry a girl that looked so heavy for him that he always seemed to be on the verge of dropping her. The nurse had also almost tripped over his own feet on the way over, it didn't make Alec feel great about the situation. If a professional couldn't do anything(even though ooc we have the foresight they can do something in the end), clearly the next option or next person to turn to is Jack Burnett. He was the one doing the ritual, it made sense to go to him instead of trusting professionals... Yes... Right.
The young teen was running as fast as his legs could take him. A man on a mission to the great hall. Everybody ate, Burnett had to be there. Arriving, Alec burst into the great hall in a hurried air. Pausing for but a moment in order to give his eyes enough time to skim the Slytherin table. There he was, “Burnett!” His name would slip out of Alec's mouth in a shout as he rushed over. Alec stopped to catch his breath from all the running, hands on his legs to steady himself. So much for not making a scene. “We need to talk,” Alec would then remember he was interrupting precious mealtime. “You can eat later. This is important.” One way or another, an impatient Alec coaxed Burnett from his seat and out into the corridors. Away from prying eyes and a place so loud it would have been impossible to hear one another anyways.
In the corridor, seconds of silence went by as Alec collected himself. The least Alec could do is think through what his next choice of words were. Alec folded his arms across his chest, in the end, all he came up with was, “Burnett, what did you do?” Opeila gave Jack her blood for the hag ritual, she wasn't dead but she wasn't waking up either. “What are you doing- that ritual, did you know she was going to get sick?” Words tumbled out of Alec's mouth faster than he could control. Non-specific as they were, it made sense in Alec's head. He was both flustered and panicked, and coming to the realization that he had not thought this through.

Jack blinked when Alec burst into the Great Hall. He put down his fork when his name was called, startled, and straightened up as the Gryffindor teen hurried toward him. When the other boy finally had enough breath to speak again, he told Jack that they needed to talk and that he could eat later because this was important.
Jack nodded, pushing aside his plate for the time being. He had no doubt Alec was right about whatever he thought was important. Alec was aware of the hags, after all, so if he thought something needed to be talked about, Jack was inclined to believe him.
Apparently they needed to talk in private, though, because Alec had the Slytherin get up from his seat and follow him out of the Great Hall. Once they were in the corridors, Jack glanced around, wondering if there was anyone else within earshot. It was much quieter than where they had just come from, but luckily there were a lot less people to overhear them as well. Jack waited for Alec to compose himself before his peer crossed his arms across his chest and asked what he did.
At first, Jack was completely puzzled. But then Alec mentioned the ritual and that 'she was going to get sick' and the gears began to turn in his mind. "Whoa, whoa, slow down. Did I know who was going to get sick? Are we talking about the ritual I think we're talking about?"
He tried to put his palms up to encourage Alec to take it easy a bit. The curly-haired youth was clearly very distressed and Jack didn't like it one bit. "Did...did something happen to Winters? Or was it Prince?"

A Dark Ritual and Its Un-Waking Affect
There had been urgency in Alec's voice, rushed and panicked because he was panicking though with the amount of time he had already let pass, one would think otherwise. It was important. He needed to know what Burnett did. It wasn't fair for Opeila to end up in this state- She only wanted to help. Alec was entrusted with why Opeila was getting sick. News even more unsettling when never given the proper time to settle in before she...
At being told to slow down Alec's eyebrows furrowed and he scoffed, “slow down? You can't be serious. What if she doesn't wake up? Burnett, its... its” Alec interrupted Jack, speaking over the other if he continued speaking. Alec voice which had been intent on being heard would fizzle out near the end. Unable to go through with the words of what he thought would be a tremendous confrontation in his head where everything suddenly became sunshine and rainbows and worked out.
Alec was unable to blame Jack for what had happened to Opeila. She was a willing participant. One who voiced danger she was well aware of to Alec. He was beginning to think Opeila was more educated on the danger of it all than Jack himself.
While he was able to catch a few words though he had been speaking over Burnett. Alec didn't stop to clarify. It wasn't hard to be aware of which ritual Alec was talking about, did Jack mean to tell Alec he had multiple ongoing? Certainly one was enough with all the trouble it had already caused.
Jack attempts to get Alec to slow down had been faulty at best. It would have been an over statement to say Jack's attempts backfired when Alec did eventually relent. Taking a step back, Alec leaned against the cool stone of the castle wall and closed his eyes. Letting out a breath Alec listened as Jack finally understood. What other ritual could Alec have possibly been implying? Jack asked if something happened to Winters and Alec opened his mouth to speak. Before he could, he would find Jack wasn't finished. Jack asked if something happened to Prince.
Alec eyes opened immediately and he steadied his gaze on Jack. Prince was involved too? Alec didn't have time to ask questions. He was pretty sure Prince was fine, right? “Opeila collapsed on her way from History of Magic. She's is in the hospital wing. She's not waking up.”

Jack's brow corrugated with concern as Alec continued to try to talk over him. He got quiet himself so he could understand what Alec was saying, but by then the other boy had fallen silent, too. It wasn't until the Gryffindor had taken a step back, leaned against the stone castle wall, and closed his eyes, exhaling, that he finally seemed to calm down to any degree.
When the Slytherin asked if something had happened to Winters or Prince, Alec's eyes shot back open and he stared at Jack who stared back uneasily. Only then did Alec explain what happened in full and proper sentences to cause him to come to Jack and inturrupt his dinner.
At first, Jack was in shock. Then he thought back to what Opeila had said and her fear that something would happen to her if she gave her blood for the ritual. It wasn't as though he thought she'd be wrong, but he hadn't wanted to think of that happening. Now, however, it had happened and he had no choice but to deal with it. It also suggested Dealla Prince was in danger of the same fate happening to her as well.
"Okay...okay, she collapsed, but she's still alive, right? That's a good thing at least," he said aloud, as if to comfort himself with that simple fact. "Was there anything else wrong with her before she collapsed? Was she in pain or did she look strange or feel fatigued or anything?"
He tried to think of what potions might be good for waking a person up from an unnatural sleep, but potions weren't his strong suit. Not to mention, what if she wasn't supposed to wake up yet? What if this was still part of the ritual?
"It's possible this was supposed to happen and Marion just didn't tell me," he murmured mostly to himself, though loud enough for Alec to hear. "The ritual isn't finished yet. Maybe we have to wait for it to finish before she can wake up."
