A Feast For Two

Fall was a time when the areas surrounding Hogwarts had finally began to decay and dry up, beginning the process of molting so that Winter would have a safe landing once it took its turn to grace the earth with its own qualities.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄
Fall has many qualities that make it enjoyable, like the crisp smells and new scenery. It's also the time of year when a few favored holidays come to light, like Halloween and Thanksgiving. Edme could appreciate all of these, embracing them like they were new and shiny every year. She enjoyed dressing up for Halloween and stuffing their face with food on Thanksgiving. But of all the qualities, it was the clearness of the grounds that made it the most lovely.
Many students preferred to eat their lunches inside when the bite of the new cold finally encroached and grasped its victims by the neck. Or nose, for Edme, as that seemed to always be what grew the chilliest first. She could see past it for the beauty of getting to eat lunch without the loud chatter of students dotted around the grounds like butterflies in an exhibit.
They had topped their plate off with apple slices and cranberries and a bit of roast chicken that could top off the meal. She had been starving for all of her morning classes, especially with the Monday blues that came around every beginning of the week. Still, they could move past it to gulp down now in-season cranberries like they were as liquid as water.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄

Fall's grand arrival is unmatched among the seasons--she blankets the land with flame, colors of gold, scarlet, and amber. Fall was always Sirin's favorite season. Though her birthday was in September, she had always loved to think of it as a fall birthday. Fall is the season of pumpkins---and with that, comes pumpkin spice lattes, and pumpkin pies. As Sirin strolled across the untrodden ground towards the Great Lakes, she turned to admire the view of Hogwarts. During such a season, even Hogwarts castle seemed to be illuminated by ethereal light. She turned her head once more to admire her view of the Great Lake. Its waters could best even the brightest crystal--the surface glistening and full of crystalline purity.
Today, Sirin planned to enjoy her lunch outdoors. Not only that, but she was also hoping for a friend to eat with. She'd brought extra food--and extra sandwich, extra treacle tarts, and of course, pumpkin spice lattes. Perhaps it was too early to go off about the beauty of fall, but Sirin could care less. Surely there was someone lounging here who appreciated the season's beauty as much as she did. As she wandered across the area, Sirin caught sight of another girl enjoying her lunch outside. The girl looked as though she were lost in thought, or tranced by the season's beauty--- marveling at its many wonders. She looked to be alone, in need of a companion. Cautiously, Sirin sidled up to her and asked,
"Hey...is anyone sitting with you? Would you mind if I sat here?"
Sirin waited patiently for a response, whilst also remembering that she had forgotten to introduce herself.
"I'm Sirin, by the way. And you?"

A golden-brown leaf fell into Edme's lap, shimmering like a spark where it slept. The Ravenclaw picked it up slowly, holding it gently in her open palm in fear that its delicate edges might crumble. They weren't entirely sure where it had come from, but it was a nice predicament anyways.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄
The second year began munching away at her plate of food, hungry from a busy morning. It was nice to get a chance to sit down and take a breather. Their eyes trailed around the grounds, moving from the shimmering gray lake to the few students dotted around. Most notable was the one walking straight towards them, a plate in her hands.
At her greeting, Edme jumped to a response. "Oh- well yes! Of course. Here," she moved aside where she sat, leaving room on the grass for Sirin to take a seat. Edme had chosen the best spot on the grounds, a patch of grass just in front of the lake, so that if looked up, you could see the great expanse of shimmering water right in front of you. It was like looking through a window, but so much more vivid. "I wasn't expecting company. People don't usually like to come out when it's all cold like this." The Ravenclaw held out her hand to be shaken. "I'm Edme."⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄

The Ravenclaw girl seemed to be startled by Sirin's sudden arrival--as anybody would be. Sirin was always quite the site--short, purple braided hair, and stunning blue eyes. Apparently, the other Ravenclaw's name was Edme---a name that sounded unique to Sirin, just like her own name. Edme extended her hand, and Sirin shook it graciously. It was always wonderful to get to know an older student, and Sirin could sense that the two would get along splendidly. She took a seat next to Edme, and, after a couple of awfully long awkward moments, Sirin took the helm and started the conversation.
"So..um...how is Hogwarts? Enjoying anything in particular?"
It was a rather boring conversation starter (but Sirin didn't want to be too sudden) and bold of her to ask--Edme was the second year, the experienced student, not Sirin. As she quietly munched on her meal, Sirin remembered the latte and the extra food she'd brought. Such an amount would certainly never be consumed by her alone--she'd get sick.
"Oh! Um..I just remembered that I did bring some extra food if you want it. An extra sandwich, a couple of pumpkin spice lattes..."
Sirin started to question why she'd brought so much food if Sirin already had plenty to eat and so did Edme. Oh well, it would be a splendid feast. A feast for two.
And Sirin was certain she would enjoy it thoroughly.

Edme was almost surprised, if not glad for the other students immediate ability to jump into conversation, even with the strange silence that seemed to draw on for many minutes.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄
"Well, I really do enjoy playing Quidditch. It can be a little frightening sometimes, but you get the hang of it quickly." she smiled, refraining from showing her teeth. Even if they knew their smile wasn't as horrid as they kept telling themself it was, she was still a bit anxious about it. "I'm a second-string keeper, so I'm on the bench more often than not."
As Edme continued to bite into the delicious and miraculously still warm meal, she concentrated on keeping the flow of the conversation natural. It was pretty obvious when a student was new to Hogwarts, and Sirin seemed to have that air of curiosity and nerves that always came from the first years. Edme had been there not so long ago, so she welcomed it greatly.
The second year raised their eyebrows a bit at the offer, taken aback by the others immediate jump to kindness. "Oh, thank you! Yes, sure, I appreciate it." she smiled, placing down her own plate so that the two could set up their picnic properly. "When I was a first year, I once had this gorgeous picnic on the grounds. It was all springy and warm and beautiful, I loved it. Hogwarts is the best place for these." They would admit to drawing out the tangent a bit more than needed, so she quickly stuffed her face with food to avoid from speaking any further.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄

It's all gonna be just fine.
Since Sirin first arrived at Hogwarts, she hadn't interacted with many people--well, actually that was a lie. She had interacted with some people. Specifically, the members of Ravenclaw house--and no one else. Sirin was normally outgoing and kind, but when faced with students older than her, she began to shrink and hide. Even though Edme was only about a year older--a second year--Sirin still felt a sense of....inferiority.
She's older than me...she's been here longer...what if I say something stupid?
It would take her a while to adjust, but Sirin remembered her father's old "teachings." Older students were not her superiors, they were there to guide Sirin and help her out. Maybe, Sirin could ask some questions and finally get answers. The girl had mentioned Quidditch, a sport that her father had brought up on many occasions. Sirin had limited knowledge of the "sport." The girl was already munching quietly on her food, perhaps shy and nervous just like Sirin. Finally, someone....like Sirin.
This is an opportunity.
"So, you like Quidditch? My father mentioned it before...a lot actually! What's it all about? The only thing I remember is that it involves a broom and a wild ball."
That certainly was a mouthful, and Sirin surely would have freaked out if someone asked her so much at once. Oh, well. Curiosity killed the cat, not the Hogwarts student.
Edme had also shared her first-year picnic memories, and Sirin hoped to make memories too. Edme was appreciative of her food, and at the very least that showed Sirin wasn't the worst cook in the world. Finally, as the last morsels of food were taken out, Sirin carefully unwrapped her meal and began to enjoy it.

Edme continued to chew and swallow, listening intently to whatever reply or note Sirin had to add. It seemed the second year had gotten quite used to meeting new people, it was like practice to get to add another to the list. But everything was meaningful, from the youngest to the oldest of the bunch, they all had something special about them that made Edme admire and appreciate them further.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄
It was easy to see the plain worry on the first year's face, even if she masked it well. Edme knew that anxiety far too well, and even if she had gotten more used to being around people, talking to them was a whole new idea. Their greatest fears were spilling their deepest secrets, like their lycanthropy, or making a fool of herself and saying something rude or weird. It was easiest to just crawl back into your shell, but Edme had spent far too long hiding, and she felt it was her social obligation to be a guide to those who were stuck with her fears.
"Yes! Quidditch is great. I'd try to explain the whole thing, but there's a lot to get through. But yes, you ride your broom around the pitch, and while some players are trying to get the snitch, others are trying to get the quaffle in the hoops while the keeper blocks it, and... well, the team with the most points wins! But if you get the snitch, it's usually an automatic win." the Ravenclaw finished simply, trying to sum it all up into a few parts. "I'm a keeper, meaning I protect the hoops and make sure nobody scores on me. I haven't gotten a lot of real playing time, but practice is always fun."
Edme finally finished some of her main food, going through the scraps and making sure not to leave a messy plate. One of the biggest things they had been taught while in foster houses is to make sure the plate is clean, and the idea just seemed to stick with her.⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄⋄
