2022, Stage 1 Slytherin vs Hufflepuff: Match 6

Fear, it turned out, was a good motivator. When both his spell and Callie's collided with Starlee, Jake couldn't help but feel bad - with Sarah struggling to her feet, Starlee had been the only one who could cast, so Jake had aimed for her. Gusts of wind had been his spell of choice, because they didn't hurt really and because when you had a bunch of wind blowing at you it was probably hard to throw spells at Jake.

But he was shocked that he had once again managed to cast them successfully. They didn't even miss...! Maybe that was because Starlee had been slowed down so she couldn't dodge... None of it felt very fair. He didn't really like ganging up on anybody. Two-on-one didn't feel fair, even if it was within the rules. And then there was aiming at somebody who couldn't move quickly anymore.

But with Starlee the only one on her feet, that meant Starlee was the only person who could hurt him, and so Jake couldn't help but keep his eyes on her and try to blow her away. It really had worked, and with the gusts of wind she hadn't been able to avoid the knockback jinx either. He hoped she was alright from that one...but he was afraid that the second they let up she was going to take her revenge. It was all just a game....right? But when you were up there it really didn't feel like it. He just wanted to push the other team away from him at any costs. But how long would the Hufflepuffs' advantage last? Sarah was standing now....were things going to turn around? How could he watch the both of them at the same time?

UPD: Forgot to subtract 110 HP from Starlee, so now Starlee's health and Slytherin's total health is correct.

The Hufflepuff team was successfully casting one spell after another, and moreover — hitting their targets. Jake conjured another Wind Jinx and successfully applied it to Starlee. Callista repeated her spell and hit Starlee as well.

But this time Starlee wasn't standing still and accepting it. Right before being hit with the Flipendo, she conjured a very nice fire and brightly set Callista aflame. Poor girl.

Sarah was most probably still in shock from everything that was happening. The paralysis was way more successful that Jake could have imagined.

Things weren't going well. In fact, they were going terribly. She was once again hit by both her opponents. Although her spell did hit Callista, setting her on fire quite brightly, but she knew it wasn't going to be enough.

It appeared Sarah wasn't just doing this to show off, she was just completely lost. Starlee would lean over to her, muttering, "Oi, Sarah, you okay? We gotta do something here..." She figured her attempts at reviving her teammate were futile, but it was worth a shot.

She look towards her opponents, preparing for another round.

It was almost comical. It seemed that everyone decided to take a break from duelling. Can't blame them. Sometimes people needs some break, and it's a miracle when everyone decides simultaneously to not cast anything. A refreshment. A pause to rethink the next actions. Always nice.

And in the middle of that refreshing silence, Starlee decided to do a roll to evade a spell. A non-existent spell. She did it in a very slick and beautiful way and it couldn't be considered funny. And who knows what she imagined, maybe it was a Blasting Curse heading her way. Better safe than sorry.

It was clear that Sarah wasn't going to be of any help. But Starlee wasn't going to let that phase her, she was going to do what she could, no what she thought she needed to do, in order to stay in the game. And to her, that was to stay alive.

So, taking advice from the famous words of Peppy Hare, Starlee did a barrel roll.

And oh what a beautiful barrel roll it was. Her form was on point and she put her whole heart and soul into dodging... absolutely nothing. Nothing. After her roll she stood up and brushed herself off, it surely wasn't that clean on the floor of the dueling piste, but honestly. She just wasted all that energy for absolutely nothing.

She was going to keep on going; she would make herself and her team proud.

"Callista!" Jake shouted, turning his head, eyes widening at the flames that had lit the front of his team-mate's robes. Starlee had used Jake's least favorite spell on Callista, and the fire gleamed, the brightness making Jake's eyes sting, or at least he thought that was what it was. He had seen the fire spells used in duels before, but it was different now...standing right there next to it, so close.

He didn't know how much time had passed before he came unfrozen, seeing a roll complete from Starlee, who had dodged from a spell that had never came. Jake shook his head, trying to get his thoughts back together. He had been watching over duels before where fire spells were thrown around, but he had never been able to do anything about it - it was against the rules. Now he could, if he wanted...if it was what Callista would want, but what would she? Was this one of the things they had talked about when they had talked about the plan? Of course, if he had been better, if he had been faster, if he had tried harder, maybe he could have stopped Starlee from casting it in the first place - or shouted at Callista to duck when he saw the spell coming. In a duel he was watching there was nothing he could have done - but this time it was different. They were a team and he'd let her get burned.

"Are you alright?" he asked her nervously, hand holding his wand. It wasn't the first time he'd asked in the duel, but this time was different. He knew incendio duo flames often petered out in duels without hurting too much - he'd seen it happen enough times, but what if it didn't? What if the flames just grew?

His eyes went back and forth from Callista to Starlee. Sarah had stood but still couldn't move (How powerful had his spell been? What had he done to her?) He wasn't sure what to do or who to cast at. To save Callista from the flames? To attack so Starlee couldn't make it worse? To do something else entirely? Callista was burning, and Starlee had finished her roll, returning to her feet, perhaps ready to get back into the fight. There wasn't any more time to think. What oh what was he supposed to do now?

It was close, that’s for sure. Callista sent off another Flipendo easily, but she hadn’t expected the flames that Starlee sent her way. If she had only been a little faster… The flames nicked her sleeve, spreading unnaturally fast. As soon as the searing heat touched her skin, Callista’s face twisted into a grimace. It wasn’t a serious burn, which made it all the more painful.

She wasn’t quite sure what happened—she was feeling a bit lightheaded after getting hit by Starlee so often, but surely that shouldn’t have affected her like this? Whatever the cause, it was almost as if time had slipped, like it had folded, and in a blink, several minutes had passed by without a single move from either her or Jake.

A dazed expression crossed her face, but she shook it off quickly. Focus! Instinctively, Callista tried to shake off the flames, but they refused to be extinguished.

“Are you alright?”

Ah, right, Jake! Turning, she saw his anxious expression and immediately smiled at him. “I’m okay! Don’t worry about me!” Callista wasn’t sure where her confidence was coming from, but she knew that she couldn’t let Jake be too worried about her.

Meenauh couldn't hold the yawning. Callista used the Healing Spell on herself, which meant she wasn't doing well. But was required to last for a little longer. Jake started his incantation, which made Starlee do another roll. This time, at least, she was anticipating the spell coming her way.

But the roll did magic as well. Like a peacock trying to distract a predator with the colourful tail, Starlee's roll done twice apparently made opponents lose the focus. So did Jake and his succession of Wind Jinxes was broken as the next spell backfired with the wind blowing into his own face, nearly throwing him back a little like a weak Knockback Jinx. Ouch.

She envied the only person on the stage who didn't give a knut about everything that was going on there — Sarah. She was probably making some point. Or fulfilling a dare — don't cast any spells and survive a duel. Meenauh was only wishing her luck to not go to the Hospital Wing before the duel was over. It would be a spectacular end if she would survive.

Starlee had determined once again that her best bet in this fight currently was to stay alive. With the wind whipping around her, it was all she could do to focus solely on avoiding her opponents spells.

She had expected them to both go on the offensive and had once again planned to dodge her attackers. One of them had done so, however it had backfired, sending the wind swirling around Jake instead of her. She wondered why, especially when this fight felt horribly one sided as Sarah continued to stand there, but sometimes focus just wouldn't come. Callista, on the other hand, had decided to heal, repairing some of the damage done to her. This meant that once again Starlee was left dodging nothing. She couldn't help but wonder if luck was on her side. It wasn't quite so clear.

"Reparifors."

It was a pleasant surprise when her spell actually worked──Dori had always been the healer, not her. The familiar tingle started at the top of Callista's head and quickly flowed down to her feet like a bucket of cold water was just poured over her head. The flames were petering out too, and the dizziness faded. Once again, she was enchanted (no pun intended) by the power of magic. Just a simple wave of her wand and a few words, and her burns fade, and her injuries are healed.

Unfortunately, Jake's spell didn't go off as well. She heard his incantation, but when she glanced to her side, winds were buffeting her partner instead of his intended target. Callista winced in sympathy; she knew just how it felt to be trapped in those gusts, although she could only how much worse it must be knowing it was your own backfired spell.

For a moment, she wondered if maybe she should have gone offensive instead, but seeing Starlee attempt to dodge and still feeling the lingering effects of her healing, Callista shook away the thought. "Are you okay?" she asked Jake.
