The classroom was ready to provide accommodation for the detention another set of first years had to follow under the strict rule of Samantha. Just like the first detention she had given, this one took place during lunchtime making the two students miss the opportunity to chat with their friends and forcing them to eat alone before or after the detention if they didn't have a friend that was willing to stick around. The two students had received an owl the previous day with the information on when to be where and Samantha hoped that they were very disappointed when they saw she had claimed at least 2 hours of their time from 12 o'clock until 2 on a Saturday.
The young prefect herself had already been in the classroom for the past 30 minutes preparing the room for the detention. On a desk in the front of the classroom, she had placed two quills and a couple of pieces of parchment that would be used for the assignment she had written on the massive chalkboard in the front of the room. Not realizing how small the chance that they were going to mean any word of what they wrote, Samantha thought it was an amazing idea and was proud of herself for coming up with it.Write an apology letter for the other in which you:
1) say you are sorry
2) describe what you did wrong
3) write how you would avoid this happening next time
4) tell them what you are going to do to make it up to them
When the first person would arrive she would greet them shortly and gesture to the seat she had prepared for them. "As you can see," she would start, gesturing at the chalkboard, when both students had arrived and sat down, "you must write a letter addressed to the other in which you apologize. It must be a nice letter! I don't want to see any insults or anything like that, if I do I will make you rewrite the entire letter and you will be here the whole day." She glared at the two students making sure they understood what she had just said. "No talking, no drawing," counting on her fingers, the prefect continued to explain the rules, "no note-passing or no daydreaming until you have finished your letter." After a short nod, Samantha sat down on the professor's chair from where she had a great view of Bubba and Sienna and would wait for them to start working.

You Better Be Sorry

Speaking
Writing
WC: 2015The Great Hall was deserted as Bubba hastily shoveled down a turkey sandwich. It was about 30 minutes before lunch but Bubba had to dine and dash. It was a disappointing sandwich, the house elves working the kitchens must be having an off day because the turkey was dry and the bread a little stale. Or maybe it was just him and his poor attitude causing him to think it was. He took his bottle out of his bag and filled it with pumpkin juice from the nearest jug and closed it up, carefully placing it in the bottle net on the side of his bag. He gave a very disgruntled sigh as he got up and started to head out of the Great Hall.
He clutched the owl from Samantha in his hand as he started to make his way through the castle. He was struck by the injustice of it all as he made his way towards his detention. It was his first detention and it was for something he hadn't even done! He was the victim. He had been thrown into the lake! He hadn't asked to be thrown in! He hadn't walked up to the girl and picked a fight, to the contrary, she'd walked up to him and almost fallen into him. Yet he was the bad guy because he'd used a few choice words to describe their encounter and spiced it up with a few colorful metaphors. So what? Was he supposed to pretend that she had been full of sweetness and light the whole time? No, that was never going to happen.
He walked into the classroom and saw the Prefect, Samantha, was already there. Bubba was very careful to throw her a dirty look as he walked in and picked up a piece of parchment from the desk, he preferred his own quill. He went over to the desk she gestured to and sat down. He absentmindedly picked pieces of lint from his robes as he waited for the girl to show up, making a special effort to pay no attention whatsoever to Sam as he did so.
When the girl finally arrived he made a special effort to throw her a look of deepest loathing. It was a look he almost never used but she certainly deserved it. She had landed him in detention, he was annoyed with Samantha for giving it but it was all this other girl's fault. Why couldn't she just watch where she was walking? Why couldn't she admit she was wrong? Why did she have to throw him in the lake? And why had Samantha been looking at him like that when he managed to extricate himself from the morass?
He was barely paying attention to what Samantha was saying. He was probably going to have to write lines or some stupid, tedious exercise. He expected he'd be writing, "I will be nice to people who try to drown me in the lake," a thousand times or something. Then he heard the word "apology". He had to be nice and apologize. All he could do was laugh, "I wouldn't write that letter with a gun to my head. I hope your afternoon and evening are free."
No daydreaming? No problem! Bubba just sat there, not writing, not talking, not drawing. Not doing anything at all. He instead spent the first ten minutes staring straight at Samantha. He was not going to give her the satisfaction of apologizing to the resident bridge troll of Gryffindor Tower. He had done nothing wrong. N-O-T-H-I-N-G. The day he apologized was the day hell froze over. So instead he just sat there. Staring, unblinking, at Samantha. Samantha, who he couldn't help notice, was kind of cute. But she was a Prefect who put him in detention, so certainly not that cute. The sheer nerve of her, putting him in detention because he wasn't nice enough to that horrible girl.
Finally, he decided he'd play her game, but he didn't think she would like the result. Still, she wanted a letter, she would get a letter. He went into his bag and pulled out his quill and ink well. He still didn't understand why he couldn't use a damn pen and pad of paper. His writing on parchment was never straight and it drove him crazy. He dipped his quill in the inkwell and began to write:
Dear Frigid Gryffinbitch:
I am sorry you think you deserve an apology. I would like to apologize... for absolutely nothing. I did nothing wrong. I would avoid this happening next time by throwing you in the lake first and walking away before a prefect showed up. To make it up to you I promise to throw you in the lake at the next available opportunity.
Sincerely
Bubba McGarry
Samantha couldn't be mad, could she? It was direct, from the heart, and absolutely sincere. He meant every, single word he'd just written. He stood up and walked up to Samantha, dropping the parchment on the desk in front of her without a single word. Bubba grabbed a fresh piece of parchment and walked back to his desk. He wasn't stupid, he knew that letter wasn't going to fly, but he'd gotten it out of his system. As he sat back down he looked at the dwindling pile of fresh parchment, "Looks like you're gonna need more parchment there sweet cheeks."
Bubba dipped his quill in the inkwell and set out on attempt number two. He decided to put some effort into this one, maybe she'd let it slip by her. If not they were both in for a long afternoon because there was literally zero chance of him writing an apology, let alone a sincere one. He began to write:
To the applicable resident of the Gryffindor girl's dormitory (no doubt a winter wonderland to match your frosty personality):
Following our brief encounter by the lake, I would like to apologize. I would like to apologize for you getting the short end of the genetic stick and not being endowed with eyes capable of properly perceiving what is directly in front of you. I would like to apologize for your inability to admit when you've made a simple mistake. I would also like to apologize for the fact that your upbringing was so without love that you're incapable of showing any emotion that would convey warmth. Furthermore, I would also like to apologize for your inability to understand a simple logical argument. If you could, you'd have no doubt realized that I was in the right and you were in the wrong. Still, not everyone can step to the Ravenclaw logic, I suppose. Finally, I would like to apologize for your having such little strength that you barely got me past the bank of the lake, and would like to thank you for getting me fully immersed so I didn't need a bath that night.
I now realize what I did wrong. I should have immediately groveled to you and sincerely apologized for putting that tree in the way. I certainly should've apologized for making the sun shine in such a way that it offered you perfect visibility of what was in your path. I also realize that it was incredibly selfish of me to sit leaning against a tree that was twenty feet away from the lake. I now understand that you require a significant amount of space for grazing and it was just selfish of me to take up such a primo spot so close to the lake. I also realize that my choice of language was problematic when attempting to explain the situation to you. As a Ravenclaw, I have a very broad vocabulary and I like to speak in eloquent sentences. I now see that the real issue is that, when speaking to a Gryffindor, I need to limit myself to monosyllabic words so that their infantile brains can understand what I'm saying. Still, and I say this with all sincerity. I do understand that my single biggest mistake was standing within reach of you. If I had remained out of reach, you would've not had to fail to resist the temptation to throw me into the lake, and we would not be in detention now. For that, I sincerely apologize.
I think the saddest thing about this situation is that it was entirely avoidable. I think the easiest way for me to avoid this reoccurring is to remain in the Ravenclaw tower at all times when I'm not in class or in the Great Hall. I really just think it's the safest way to avoid oversensitive Gryffindors throwing me in the lake. Still, I think there are other ways to avoid this situation repeating itself without being so extreme. For one, I would be perfectly happy to keep a minimum of five nautical miles between us at all times. Still, the castle is not quite that big so, unless you have some elasticity you have yet to show off, I think we'd be safe if I gave you a twenty-foot berth at all times. Should we end up in closer proximity, I think the safest to do would be to never speak to or look at you ever again. I know it seems a bit extreme but I think that if we work together, we'll be able to avoid any future interactions.
Oh the things I would do to make it up for you. I would really hate to think this would damage our prospects of a beautiful friendship in the future. The first thing I would do to make it up to you is to walk the grounds and find a dozen of the loveliest red roses and pick them for you. After waiting a sufficient time for them to wilt and die, I would then happily tie them in a bow and leave them in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady for you. A second, and equally tantalizing option, is that I know some of my friends' cats love to bring them little gifts, and I would happily accept one and regift it to you. I know it's a really small gesture, but I really think you do deserve such kindness. I know these gestures are all very grand but I really do think I've badly wronged you here, and I would do anything to make it up to you. Still, I think I could best way to make it up to you is by never talking to you again and happily pretending you don't exist.
I realize that this has been an exceedingly long missive, but I really do hope that we can put this unpleasantness behind us and move on with our lives (without each other in them).
Very Truly Yours
Bubba McGarry
That was an excellent letter. Bubba was quite sure that once Sam really looked at it and saw the time, sincerity, and heart he'd put into it, he'd be out of this room in absolutely no time. He got up and took his piece of parchment to Samantha's desk. He carefully put it down, wanting to give such beautiful prose the respect and care it deserved. "I think you'll find this most satisfactory." He said to her with a devious smile.
With that, Bubba went back to his desk and sat down. He took the bottle of pumpkin juice from his bag and took a long sip. It was very refreshing and felt nice and cool going down. Bubba didn't realize he'd built up such a large thirst as he'd written that letter. He supposed being magnanimous was hard work. Sure, the first one was sincere and absolutely true, but he knew that wouldn't get him out of this classroom. The second letter though, the second letter was an absolute masterpiece. They should put it in the museum of apologies as a shining example of how to apologize. Satisfied with himself, Bubba put his feet up on the desk and waited patiently to be released.

────────────────────The whole thing was utterly ridiculous in Sienna’s mind. Why should she have to attend a detention for tripping over a dumb Ravenclaw’s schoolbag? She did not regret screaming at him, insulting him, or even throwing him into the lake. Samantha may have been concerned for the boy’s well being, but Sienna truthfully never had been.
At noon, she entered the empty classroom to see both Samantha and Bubba already there. For it being a detention, the classroom seemed a happy enough setting. She listened attentively to Samantha’s instructions as to how they would serve the detention. When the older girl finished, she scoffed. “You’ve got to be joking me. There’s no way I would ever apologize to him, on paper or out loud.”
Sienna sat at one of the desks with her arms crossed firmly across her chest. She couldn’t do this, she wouldn’t. No matter how much she resisted however, she knew that eventually she would have to write the stupid letter. Better do it now and get out of here, than to sit around for the rest of the day. Even if she did write the letter, it didn’t mean she would have to abide by the words. As soon as they were out of the classroom she could go back to hating Bubba with every fiber of her being.
Sitting up straight, she drew a piece of parchment across the desk and grabbed a quill. Dipping the tip in some ink, she began to write.
Bubba,
Alright look. You need to know that I’m not sorry one bit about what I did to you. The only thing I did wrong was getting caught by Samantha. Next time that won’t happen. Seeing as Samantha won’t accept this unless I actually do some apologizing, I guess I’d better apologize for something. I’m sorry that you are a complete ass and had the misfortune of being sorted into Ravenclaw. All you birds think you’re better than everyone else, when in fact, you aren’t. In the process of acting like a know it all, you really made yourself look like an idiot at the lake, especially with the flowchart. (You’re welcome for bringing that little fact to your attention.)
I’m also sorry for freaking tripping over your bag, which landed us in detention. This school system is obviously reaching the point of insanity. I almost forgot, I’m also sorry for not expressing to you the exact amount in which I believe you to be mentally incapable of understanding that tripping over a schoolbag does not warrant everything that took place at the lake.
I must say that in all honesty, I do not think I have ever despised someone as much as I have despised you, so congratulations for being number one on my “I hate you with every fiber of my being” list. You have done nothing for me except to make these last few days a living hell. When we get out of this detention, you’d better believe that next time you are near the lake, you will be flipendoed in.
- Sienna
Sienna finished the letter with a flourish. She really hadn’t meant for it to have been so cold and overall rude, but it was perfect for getting her feelings across to him and it was quite fun to write, so she walked up to Samantha with a sweet smile. Sienna handed the letter to her. “So, can I leave now? I’ve done as you asked. I think you will find that my letter is precisely what you were wanting.” As soon as she got the word to leave, she would be heading straight to the library to learn some magically creative ways of getting back at Bubba.────────────────────STA: 8 | EVA- 8 | STR- 1 | WIS- 5 | ARC- 4 | ACC- 9────────────────────

A little disappointed Bubba had given her a dirty look, she quietly watched him sit down and basically ignore her until the other first-year arrived. The brunette didn't even try to hide her surprise when her assignment was met with so much hostility, glaring at the two students in confusion. Why was it so hard to say that they were sorry? There must be an ounce of regret, right? It wasn't that hard to see why you shouldn't push people in the lake or call them bad words. "My afternoon and evening are free, yes. Neither of you will leave this classroom until you have written an acceptable apology letter for the other," she told them with a serious look on her face. Even though they wouldn't be able to talk, Samantha didn't hate the idea of spending the rest of her day in the presence of the boy.
While Sienna started writing her letter as Samantha had requested, Bubba spend his first ten minutes staring at the prefect. At first, the girl tried staring back at him, looking him in his eyes, but when she realized how well his brown eye complimented the rest of his face, she looked away with slightly red cheeks. Her red cheeks were quickly covered by her hands as she didn't want the boy to see she was blushing. After staring at the closed book, which she had brought with her to read while the two wrote their letters, in front of her for about a minute, she glared up again to see if the boy was still looking at her, which he was.
During the rest of detention, the brunette would hide her face behind the copy of Alice in Wonderland, sometimes peeking to see if the two were working and blushing every time she crossed eyes with Bubba. The first of the two to complete their letter was Sienna, who approached her with a little smile. "I will have to read it first to see if it is okay. After that you are free to go," she gave the other a little smile back as she took the letter. "What?" left her mouth in surprise after reading the first sentence. The whole point of this detention was for the students to reflect on their actions and she said she wasn't sorry! Hoping the letter would get better as it progressed, she continued reading only to realize it became worse and worse.
At Sienna's comment about Ravenclaw, Samantha glared up with an extremely hateful look in her blue eyes. "For your information, Ravenclaw is a great house and it is an honor to be sorted in it. We don't think we are better than everybody but we are defiantly better than you if you can't even be respectful or write an apology letter," the prefect said with an extremely serious, almost scary look on her face. Nobody would insult her house in front of her and get away with it, Samantha was too proud of her Eagles to allow any trash talking. "You are going to rewrite this letter," she told the other girl as she threw the letter on the ground before pointing the other back to her seat next to Bubba.
A lot crankier now, the brunette continued reading her book waiting for the first years to come with better letters than the last one. After aggressively turning a page from which she barely remembered anything, she noticed Bubba walking up to her and dropping a letter on her desk. With high hopes, way too high, she picked up the letter only to throw it on the ground with a dramatic sigh after only reading the greeting. "No insults and be nice, Bubba," she told him disappointed as he sat down. Apparently, his good looks were sadly no guarantee for good manners. "You two just need to stop being babies," she replied to the boy's comment about needing more parchment. Bubba already had the looks, if only he only had the manners, it would be so much better. It was obvious he needed somebody like her, somebody to keep him on the right track, in his life to make sure he wasn't being a jerk to others.
Reducio
After some more reading of Alice in Wonderland, Bubba dropped off a different letter which Samantha read thoroughly, making sure to focus on every little detail. This letter was defiantly an improvement from the last but it still wasn't good enough. "Is this the best you can do?" she would ask the boy after she read through the entire thing. "Also, feet of the desk!" she told him as soon as she noticed the dirty shoes on the table. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't let you rewrite this letter again and keep you here for an extra hour or two."

You Better Be Sorry

Bubba could at least take some solace in the fact that the Gryffingirl approached this ridiculous task with the same level of sincerity and dedication that he did. He was no prefect, but it was pretty clear to him that Samantha had bitten off more than she could chew with this one. There was simply no way that either of them would give a proper, sincere apology to the other. If Samantha wanted to waste her day that was fine, but surely there were more entertaining ways to do that than sit here and bang her head against the wall.
Bubba sat quietly, without a care in the world, as Samantha was reading the girl's letter to him. He was frankly a bit miffed given that his first letter had been handed in before hers. Some feedback would have been nice, letting him know where he was lacking, etc. Bubba could only imagine that the girl was talking that shit about Ravenclaw again as she had just been admonished by Samantha. So, typical Gryffindor, it was like muggle school all over again, the jocks versus the nerds. The Gryffindors were all balls but they were lacking in brains. Bubba liked to think he had the balls of a Gryffindor, he just didn't have to think with them because he actually had a functioning brain. He was pleased when Samantha told the girl she would have to rewrite her letter.
Bubba was certainly not worried about his own letter. It was perfect, the perfect apology, just like a perfect phone call. There was no way whatsoever that Samantha could find any fault with it. It was eloquent, well-written, and absolutely sincere. He had apologized for so much as well. Oh, how wrong he was. After finally reading one of his letters, she asked if that was the best he can do. Without skipping a beat, he gave an emphatic and defiant, "Yes."
Then she went too far, telling him to get his feet off the desk. The look she gave him... as if his shoes had just come off a muddy field. Bubba's shoes were freshly polished, without a speck on them. Why on earth should they not sit on the desk? Still, he wanted to get the hell out of there so he shot her a dirty look and took them off the desk, sitting up straight.
When she asked him for a good reason to let him go he looked at her dead in the I and replied, "Well, number one, that is the closest you're going to get to a real apology. Number two, if you want to wait for a better apology we will literally be here until the end of time. Three, there is no god. damn. way. that she is getting a real apology." He finished but was still looking straight at Samantha, "So there are three good reasons, pick one."

────────────────────At Samantha's outburst at her letter to Bubba, Sienna cringed mentally. It was very apparent that she would not be allowed to leave unless her letter contained a real sincere apology for the idiot. As much as she detested the idea, she supposed that if no real meaning was put into the ink and paper, it wouldn't matter. Especially if Bubba ended up the victim of some prank tomorrow. Maybe she could spike his pumpkin juice with a sleeping solution and make him miss his classes. That seemed like the thing that would make him mad, and even better, it would let him know the letter had no meaning whatsoever to her.
She smiled thinking about how to get Bubba upset after this stupid detention was finished. Putting her quill to the parchment, she began to write out an apology. (Even if she wasn't a damn bit sorry about the many rules she had broken.)
Bubba,
God, as much as it annoys me to do this, I suppose apologizing is technically in order. I am deeply sorry, from the bottom of my heart, for my actions at the Great Lake. They were immature and childish. I should not have pushed you in the lake or broken rules, (what was it?) 10, 11, and 20? Hmm, three rules broken in one go. That's got to be some sort of record. Not that it's anything to be proud of.
I will make an effort to be civil around you from now on. I swear I will never say or do such horrible things to you, or anyone else for the rest of my time at Hogwarts. I apologize for the poor judgement I used at the lake.
I hope you will accept my apology.
-Sienna
Repressing the urge to roll her eyes at the tone and words on the page, she stood, closing the distance between her and Samantha. She couldn't, however, stop herself from making an idle comment as she handed her letter to Samantha. "Poor Bubba. Can't wrap your tiny brain around the task at hand? Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be able to leave sometime this afternoon." With a sickly sweet smile, she walked back to the desk, sitting there until Samantha deemed her letter good enough for her to take her leave.

Even though it went paired with another dirty look, Bubba listened to her and removed his feet from the desk. "That were three reasons indeed but none of them were good," she replied while looking straight back at the boy. "You'll have to rewrite the letter again and like I said, I have all the time," she reminded him with a sassy look on her face.
The next letter Sienna handed her positively surprised the young prefect. It seemed like the other girl had finally understood the assignment and had realized what she had done wrong. This was amazing! Samantha gave the first year a proud smile as she looked up. "You did great! You are allowed to go now, enjoy your weekend," she announced to Sienna. "Once Bubba has written a good letter I will send it to you so you can read it."
Now it was just waiting for Bubba to realize she wasn't going to stop with this detention until he wrote a good letter for the other. She wasn't even halfway through her book so she didn't mind staying in the classroom for a couple more hours so she could finish her book. On top of that, she would be able to glance at Bubba every once in a while and see his pretty face. The only person he was bothering with his behavior was himself.
When Bubba would finish his letter Samantha would read through it and give her judgment. If the letter was trash she would send him back to his desk, no matter how many times she had already done that before. Only when she was satisfied with the letter, would she let the boy go and wish him a nice weekend.

Bubba had really had quite enough of this. He still thought it was absolutely ridiculous that he even had to take part in the infuriating exercise. How could Samantha not get it through that thick skull of hers? He was the victim here. V-I-C-T-I-M. He had been thrown in the lake. So he said a few no-no words. SHE'D THROWN HIM IN THE LAKE. Why was he hear at all? And then she just had to sound so damn smug. Those were three great reasons that he should be allowed to leave right now. And then she let Sienna leave! WHY?!? Surely the punishment should fit the crime. She should at least have to sit here until five minutes after he leaves. It was just ridiculous.
Bubba got to writing again. And again. And again. Five more times he took letters up for Samantha's approval and five more time's she'd rejected them. Well, what did she want? A real apology? They'd been there for so long that the sun was starting to drop below the trees in the Forbidden Forest and finally, he was hungry and was done, just done.
He finally wrote an apology, a real apology. It was short, and not sweet, but it was as far as he was willing to go.
He put all of the stuff back in his bag and got up, walking to the desk where Samantha still sat. He dropped the letter on the desk and said, "That's as far as I'm willing to go, but hey, let's do this again sometime."Dear Sienna:
I am sorry I called you a bitch. I will use a less colorful metaphor next time.
Bubba
And with that, he walked out.
