Letters to Grandmother solo

October 10th, 2022

Dearest Grandmother,

You were right. My classmate helped me alter the dress. It fit much better after that. The ball was actually quite nice. The decorations were beautiful, and the costumes were magnificent. There was one bit of trouble with the Petting Zoo, however. Don't worry, no one was hurt!

Enclosed in the envelope is a copy of my report card. I have earned all E's and O's so far, and have gotten my homework back with the Professors' notes. I think I know better what to expect in these classes, and how to do better.

Please give my regards to Grandfather, Uncle Harris, and Bradley.

I'm glad you finally understand the favor I did you in giving you that dress. I trust you'll remember to heed my advice in the future. Your indecisiveness can really grate on my nerves.

Now that you've had your night of frivolity, it's time to be serious. These marks are disappointingly mediocre. Maybe an E is acceptable is some muggle-born or half-blood family, but the Everridge's must attain absolute perfection. Whatever errors you made, do not make them again. I will be lenient only this once as you settle in, but do not dare to disappoint me again, for there will be consequences.

I know you must be upset with me for my marks. I promise, I will bring them up. I've been pouring over my notes, making revisions, and reading ahead so that my next marks will all be Outstanding. For this reason, my letter today will be cut short so I may resume studying. I wish you well, and I promise to make my family proud.

Our family has a rich and illustrious history, and in our time at Hogwarts, the Everridge's have left their mark. I, my mother, and her mother before her were all prefects of Slytherin house in our fifth years, and I was Head Girl in my sixth. Your Grandfather was a prodigal potioneer, and your Uncle was Head Boy. I say this to remind you that your actions reflect upon the rest of us. When you get a lackluster grade in Flying or Astronomy, you are chipping away at a legacy.

Focus on your studies and remember this. You do not have the luxury of being lazy. You must work twice as hard for being half-blooded.

Dearest Grandmother,

How are you? I've been very busy studying, working hard like you told me to. I hope the family is doing well. How are Grandfather, Uncle Harris, and Bradley? How is business going? A recent conversation with a friend made me realize I haven't inquired after my family in some time. Could you relay to Uncle Harris that I hope business is going well?

I haven't had much time to pay attention to it, but the Hexwizard Tournament is going on. I know Grandfather likes competitions, so if you'd like me to update him, I'd be happy to. Halloween is also coming up. I hear there will be a grand feast that day, and lots of candy. It might be fun, but I'll miss spending Halloween at the manor. I hope you all enjoy it.

You seem in high spirits. Just be sure not to let that excitement impede your academic progress. As for me, I am doing fine. Imelda's holding a Halloween party this year, and I intend to chaperone Bradley for it. Imelda's daughter is only a few years younger than him, and they'd make a splendid match in the future. Your Uncle is truly working himself to death, and it'll likely worsen in December. He could stand to take a night off, perhaps attend the party and find a pretty young thing. A man needs wife to take care of him in his old age. Take your grandfather, for example. His mind isn't what it used to be, and he's so stubborn when it comes to taking his potions. I'm doing god's work, looking after him.

Don't worry about that Hexwizard nonsense. If Hogwarts insists on a half-breed "champion", there's no reason to follow that fiasco. Quite honestly, it's shameful, and I would rather another team take home the cup. Even a pitiful little school like Koldovstoretz.

Dearest Grandmother,

Thank you for your concern. I'm sure the Halloween feast will be divine, but I don't have too much appetite today. I may miss it and focus on completing my homework instead.

Even without the feast, I've had a lovely Halloween. Just the other day, my dormmates and I decorated the Plant Palace dormitory for the holiday. We hung streamers from the tree and placed pumpkins around the room. It was quite nice, a little like the decorations at home.

Imelda's party was exquisite, and Bradley hit it off quite nicely with her daughter. I may have them over for winter break so he can get better acquainted with her. You won't mind sharing your bedroom.

Your celebration certainly sounded interesting. Really, doesn't Hogwarts even use their house elves anymore? It's their work to decorate, not yours. And a tree in the dormitory? It sounds absolutely dreadful. I don't know how you can stand to live in such filth. When I was in Slytherin, the dormitories were prestigious, carved into the very backbone of Hogwarts. Don't get any ideas from these dormmates of yours, you are not to be dragged down to their level.

Tell me of your class progress. Have you pulled up your marks any?

Dearest Grandmother,

My classes are progressing quite nicely. I've made sure to spend extra time studying Transfiguration and History of Magic so my marks improve. Transfiguration seems to have a lot to do with physics. Did you know that muggles study physics as well? Right now I am reading about the Goblin Rebellions in Europe. I didn't know how bad it had been between goblins and wizards.

I will continue to do my best.

I expect you to do more than your best. If a muggle, of all things, can learn it, then you must. I will not offer empty compliments simply to encourage you, so do not expect any. But I am a giving woman at my core, so I will enlighten you about these so-called Goblin Rebellions in order to improve your education. Calling them rebellions is a stretch, as goblins hardly had any interest in being loyal citizens. They would rather claim "independence" with the resources we wizards gifted them. And as much as they complain of it, they would have no power if not for profiting off wizard commerce. There are two sides to every story, as much as some people would have you believe there's only one.

This week has been tiring. I will conclude this letter thus and leave you to ruminate on what I've written.
