Fog rolls across the lake in the cool, dawn hours, giving the mist an eerie lilac, lightening to pink and orange over the haze then casting to the trees, cliffside, and school. Juxtaposed to the bustle of the wizarding castle waking to breakfast, the trees, water, and coast are serene, quiet, near motionless.
Save for the soft voice of a young giving what might sound like an exposition to an audience. Only, on a mound at the triangle of cliffs, lake, and forest, she is alone. Red hair, with silver jewelry and various earth stones braided in, wrapped over a shoulder frizzes with dew. Blending down is a pastel pink jumper, with black 'E. N. D.' slanting down the front, over dark mauve trousers and pink again trainers. The second year Hufflepuff sits lotus on a bath towel with three cards spread before and a deck to the side.
The mystical, stately purr of her exposition drones into silence then muttering as a bangled hand flips a card. With a brief flash of frustration, cards are slotted back into the deck which shuffles wildly for several breaths before setting down again. She arranges five cards in a cross with a sixth crisscrossing the center piece and four more lined up to the side. Cheeks and nose pinkened, she begins again.

Della crept out of the castle. She skipped breakfast, wanting to find some time alone near the lake. Not that she didn't usually find time alone under her favorite spot; her list of friends these days was short. She kept to herself. No, today, she just didn't want to see anyone—the crisp morning air hitting her face as she stared into the lake's depths, like she had the whole castle and its ground all to herself.
But her plans were quickly foiled. Someone, a girl probably her age, sat alone under the tree. Della's tree. The one she always chose. She considered walking away, giving up, going back to breakfast, falling into the hustle and bustle of the student body, but she caught the girl's voice in the wind. She was talking to herself.
From Della's vantage point, up the sloping lawn above the tree, she could see the girl was playing with cards. The cards didn't have the usual black red white combo; they looked intricate and colorful. Della couldn't hear what the girl was saying, but she whatever it was stopped and started with those cards.
Feeling that strange bit of Gryffindor bravery, or pure thoughtlessness, that sometimes possessed her, Della marched down the hill and stopped right next to the girl. Now that she could see the cards, adorned with beautiful pictures, and the girl, braids bejeweled, more closely, she knew her morning might turn out to be quite the adventure.
"Hello, not many people are out here this early. Do you mind if I join you?"

So focused, the would-be seeress is deaf to the crunching of cold grass and jerks upon hearing a voice so close. The card being lifted between two fingers flutters up and falls down to land lateral, displaying a regal sword with snake wound around to the background of dawn rays over hills. The card reader glances up to the intruder and tilts her head with a few keenly appraising blinks and arched brow. She turns back to the card, "Oh. I guess that's appr'priate."
She stands quickly, not gracefully, and turns to offer the flaxen girl a giant smile. "Good mornin'! Ya're here." She says with an unspoken question and impishly crinkling eye. "I'm here. And all my friends." She waves a hand nonchalantly around. "Only codding ya. I'm Skraele. Of course ya can join, if ya dare." She winks and sinks back to one end of the towel while patting the other amiably.
"Didja brin' any food? I kinda forgot, again." She grins sheepishly with a hand passing over her belly. "And the owls get upset with me, then I have ta double up ta make peace." She takes a deep slow breath while smiling softly, apparently needing to center herself in order to stop yammering. An obvious afterthought, hands whirl around her tinkling hair, trying futilely to straighten it some instead matting dew through.
That this spot is already claimed doesn't once cross her mind. While she prefers the lake in general, she likes to try different locations. Maybe different areas around it will evoke various outcomes. Thus far, her previous and solitary episode refuses to repeat. Hope for validation and reoccurrence wanes with each failed attempt. Having a new subject will prove interesting one way or the other.
