2022, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 11

Before she knew it, the duel had already begun. With a flick of her wand, she went through the motions and words that she’d done before a million times—Incendio Duo, the fire-making spell. Something had gone wrong along the way, though; maybe a hesitation, or a mispronunciation, but moments after the spell came into existence, it fizzled out in an overwhelming show of sparks. Everly frowned, a little disappointed in herself, though she wasn’t too discouraged. No one else had made any advances either, spells veering away from their targets.

Whatever had plagued the duellists a moment ago--nerves, not having yet settled into focus--seemed to have mostly been shaken off. Everly, at least, certainly had escaped spell failure before it could become an unfortunate pattern. Her curse struck fast and true, a sight to watch land, and then a very different, less pleasing to watch sight as it ran through Julian's system. Already his nose was running, pressure building in his sinuses, and it would just get worse from here.

Both Hufflepuffs produced impressive displays of magic, too; Nessie's didn't have quite the uncanny precision of Everly's, but it was well-aimed, and Julian's fire burned a brilliant gold and red streak across the stage that left the audience blinking like they'd just stared at the sun. Neither spell would hit, though, and that all came down to Kim.

Kim, who was on his spell-dodging A-game, reflexes quick and movements intelligent. He'd escape the harsh fate of a powerful Flipendo or especially searing Incendio Duo. But the concentration all that took, or perhaps just the panic that kicked his systems into such quick response, came at the cost of his casting. Much like Everly's last spell, his attempt at another Rictusempra fizzled sadly. The audience was likely plenty distracted by his Matrix-level moves to skip over the spell failure part, though.

Everly's spell was a success this time!

Kim was glad that his partner had been able to get off a clean hit with their spell and that Julian was now debuffed.

Unfortunately, right as he was casting his own spell at Julian, two potentially dangerous spells came towards him from both Hufflepuffs. Nessie shot a Knockback Jinx his way and Kim managed to narrowly avoid it by twisting his body to the side and at an angle. Trying to finish casting the Tickling Charm on Julian, he was interrupted again as Julian shot a more powerful version of the Fire-Making Spell at him. Kim was easily able to avoid this spell but as a result of dodging two spells, while casting his own spell, his focus was broken just enough so the spell didn't go off.

Rats.

The two seemed as if they would continue to go after him and Kim wondered how he was going to deal with this.

It was around this time that Kim happened to catch sight of some familiar faces out in the audience. Eun-ji and Bailey were there. Both Ravenclaws. Since this particular match was not one where their House was participating, the only reason they could be there would be for him. Now, Kim hadn't actually asked either of them to spectate. Mostly because he felt weird asking for anyone to come support him in such a manner. So the fact that both of them were there for him gave him mixed feelings. From one perspective, he was happy they were both there at the match.

But at the same time, Kim was a little nervous too. It wasn't as if Kim had recently gone to Eun-ji's dueling match to support her and Bailey wasn't even in a large wizard sport. So they didn't 'owe' him anything, which was the only reason why Kim thought someone would come to 'support' and watch his matches. The orange haired boy's reasoning had come from being trained from an early age to suspect the motivations of everyone at all times. Everyone wanted something, there was no just 'being nice' for no reason. So, why did they want to come watch him?

Back in the past, Kim would have gone to Eun-ji's first match.

After all, he had felt close to her ever since he'd discovered she was Charlie's fiance. But he hadn't been able to.

Because her match had been at the same time as Kim's childhood friend's match Regina and he'd already promised her he'd attend to support her at the time. If it hadn't been for that reason, Kim would have gone to spectate at Eun-ji's match. The boy was now uncertain as to why the two girls were there at his match. It didn't make sense to him. Did they want something from him? Perhaps he was overthinking this and the two had merely come to gain insight as to what strategies the duelists might use. Bailey he could understand as she wasn't part of any wizard sport now.

But Eun-ji... Kim wasn't sure what Eun-ji thought she could learn from watching a lower level duel. She was much more experienced and powerful than him and probably the others on his current level. Therefore, the only reason he could think of that Eun-ji would come here would be just to see him. Kim felt his attention shift to the side as he let his blue eyes flicker over the girl. She was even doing something with the drake journal he'd gifted her back in the past. Could she be into him? Of course not. Kim shook his head with a smirk for even considering such a possibility.

Eun-ji caught his eye and nodded at him.

Kim nodded back at her and glanced over at Bailey, who gave him what could almost be classified as a smirk.

He tilted his head to the side and gave her a half-smile, wondering what that expression meant. Eh, he'd have plenty of time to ask her about it later! Enough with the spectators! Returning his attention to his partner, Kim came over to discuss a few things with them. They had to figure out what they wanted to do next against their opponents. This next round would hopefully have some more positive results for them. What they were going to do was still up in the air though. But they had some time to strategize and come up with a battle plan that would bring them total victory!

Nessie didn't have time to dwell on the fact that she'd missed another spell - disappointing but an unsurprising event considering her lack of experience, if you asked her - because she was far too proccupied with realizing that her partner had been hit.

Her eyes widened. What should she do? If she acted as though something was wrong, would the opposition think it a sign of weakness? But of course she was concerned! Actually, she was probably more concerned than if anything had happened to her, because she was naturally worried about the wellbeing of her teammate. After all, as a co-captain of the Hufflepuff team, she was meant to make sure everyone was alright, wasn't she? And Nessie really wanted Julian to be okay.

Far more distressing was the realization that there might not be anything Nessie could do to help, if anything was wrong. It wasn't as if she'd been able to hit the Gryffindors yet, and she didn't think she knew how to reverse the magic that had been cast on her duelling partner.

She tried not to let her worries show, doing her best to maintain a neutral expression as she settled for asking. "A-are you alright?"
2022, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 11
Some people might've felt proud to produce such an impressive flame as the one Julian had produced on his second attempt at Incendio Duo, but Julian wasn't most people. Fire made him uneasy under most circumstances. In a lesson, his uneasiness might've been mingled with pride at having produced such an impressive display of magic, but in a duel, when he was attempting to land a hit on an actual person, who could get seriously injured? He felt his stomach somersaulting as he squinted against the spell's brightness, but thankfully Kim dodged.

It took him a fraction of a second to realise his mistake. He'd once again paid too much attention to his own spell and not nearly enough to his opponents'. He barely felt the spell hit, but its effects made it immediately apparent that it had, as his eyes started to water, his nose started to run and the kind of nausea that accompanied a bad cold settled on him, all with preternatural speed. He sniffled, grimacing.

"Sorry," he mumbled in Nessie's direction. "I'm alright. It's just the curse of the bogies. It doesn't hurt. It's just... annoying." And messy. Messy was one of Julian's least favourite qualities in a spell. He resisted the urge to wipe his nose, and sniffled some more. "Ugh. I wish I had a tissue." Handkerchief's were inherently gross, but suddenly he saw the wisdom in carrying one around.

This time, Everly’s spell hit, right on target. It had felt different in some way, as if she’d known where and how the Hufflepuff was going to move. She’d known exactly where to aim and what was going to happen in a mere matter of seconds. The Curse of the Bogies struck strong and true, and Everly winced slightly. It wasn’t going to be a pleasant experience, she knew that.

Reducio
Phase-Out Chance (10): [d20: 4] → no phase-out, chance increases to 20%
Julian summed up the Curse of the Bogies quite aptly: annoying but not painful. Unfortunately for him, the Gryffindors were more than happy to make up for that with two Flipendos, bright and foreboding, heading his way. The first, Everly's merely clipped him in the shoulder, but Kim's was a solid blow to his thigh. Now he had a mounting sinus pressure-induced headache and bruises.

He could hardly be blamed, then, for his second attempt at fire not coming very close to hitting Kim, especially since Kim was quickly establishing a reputation for being quick on his feet. Nessie's spells were hardly slow or poorly aimed, Bridget could see that, and still the Gryffindor was a little faster. The only one suffering thus far was still Julian.

Everly's next spell succeeded!

Kim was glad something had worked out for them, even if it had just barely hit the target in question.

But the point was that it had hit, which meant they were slowly getting into their stride! Perhaps Everly just took some time to warm up, which was totally understandable. As for himself, Kim was even more happy about the fact that his own Knockback Jinx had worked too. The spell had gone off without a hitch, the incantation had been perfect and even the direction had been true. The orange haired boy's spell had even inflicted a good deal of damage upon his current target. Everything was working out for the two and he could only hope it continued in this manner.

Although things had been awkward at first, it was becoming better as time went on, and Kim was learning a lot about his current partner in the dueling match. This would probably serve him well in the future, as dueling partners tended to change all the time. No one ever had any set partner, it kept people on their toes what with their partners changing all the time. At any rate, all that time spent practicing spells by himself and with the help of Ali, Hana-chan, Galton and some others seemed to have paid off for him. He could only hope that this flow continued forever.

Or at least until the match ended.

Despite the fact that he didn't have much official experience when it came to duels, Kim was doing pretty well.

Julian had tried to cast the Fire-Making Spell at him again, which Kim had been able to avoid easily. Even Nessie's Knockback Jinx had been avoided by him, although she'd come a little closer to hitting him. If he hadn't been on his guard all the time, she might have managed it. But Kim was intensely focused on the match. For more than one reason. He had many reasons to devote his entire attention to only concentrating on the match. The main one being he didn't want any distractions because his current thoughts and feelings was not something he wanted to ponder.

2022, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 11
Nessie's expression was one of awe as she cast another spell and watched it miss yet again. But the Hufflepuffs' inability to land any spells on the Gryffindor team was the least of her worries: even more nightmarish was not one but two spells striking her partner.

Nessie let out a gasp, surprised that the duel was now going downhill so suddenly. She felt awful, seeing Julian hit again and again. Of course, she hadn't done anything to cause the hits, but she also felt that perhaps she could've done more to prevent them. If only she'd hit any of her spells, she wondered if she might've been able to mitigate the Gryffindors' strong offenses that relentlessly targeted her partner.

This was not good, and although she tried to be strong, Nessie's concern was starting to show in her expression. "Still alright?" she whispered, hoping that Julian was even though the multiple spells that hit suggested the possibility otherwise.

Nessie had already been trying her best in the duel, but she now resolved to try even harder, in the hopes of sparing Julian any further misfortune.
2022, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 11
"I'm okay," Julian grimaced from where he was now sitting on the floor, having been hit by two knockback jinxes in quick succession, causing him to stumble back. It wasn't quite a lie. He was definitely miserable and his leg and shoulder (and bum) were all now achey, but he wasn't horribly hurt or anything. He just needed a second to catch his breath. He squeezed his eyes shut and tried to inhale deeply, only to be forcibly reminded of the fact that his nose felt like someone had stuffed it with cotton. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

He sniffled and slowly picked himself up, taking a second to adjust his glasses as he tried to recover before the other team could capitalise on his compromised position.

""It could be worse," he told Nessie, with what he hoped was a confident enough tone. ""I could be on fire." He dropped his voice to a low mumble. He didn't want to give the other team any ideas.
