Kim was trying hard to remain focused.
To most observers, it would appear to be working, as Kim seemed into those around him.
Especially when it came to the subjects being discussed. For sure, it seemed as if Kim was really into what was being said and some might even think he was showing great interest in them. But inwardly, he was barely hanging on, although he would never admit this to anyone. The boy's extreme social anxiety was something he wanted no one to ever find out about him. If one were to look closely, they would notice a twitch in his eyes, or the tightening of his lips.
Perhaps a subtle tensing of the muscles. But outwardly for the most part, Kim would appear as if he was engaged and even interested in what others had to say about things. It was only when someone reached out to grab his arm that Kim looked downward at the culprit who dared touch him. Ah, it was Sophia. Well, that was fine. But as Sophia's eyes met his own, Kim looked into them. He noted the instant blush that came to her cheeks and regarded her.
Before he would have wondered if she was feeling sick.
But now that he knew she liked him, Kim wondered what he'd done.
To make her react in such a manner. As the girl continued to speak, Kim let his eyes flicker over her. Wait, was there something more to this? And then she started to fall forward onto him. He caught her in his arms and blinked. The pink haired boy raised a brow. Could she seriously have just fainted on him? Didn't that only happen in entertainment and stories? But here he was experiencing it firsthand. "Excuse me, I must tend to Sophia right now."
"Thank you all for your time!" Kim told the people he'd interacted with earlier and then headed towards the door, carrying Sophia in his arms, bridal style.

Marius flushed when Professor Horne clapped, and of course it was a blush of happiness and pride instead of embarrassment. He knew that the Astronomy teacher had applauded sincerely, out of awe, not for mere formality or respect, and all the better because of that. The Hufflepuff was glad that not only he had managed not to bore his teacher, but also he had given her something to enjoy.
"Yes, Professor, I am raised a Roman Catholic," he answered her question. "I still practice it today, if I may share this with you. But I don't find it difficult to perform magic; I think having magical power is a gift no different than having a talent. And the Holy Bible teaches us not to waste our talents, but instead, we must make the best use of it for good purposes." He looked at the professor all the time he replied, to show her that he was honest and serious with all his words. If the teacher looked back at him, she would find honesty reflected in his soft brown eyes, perhaps an honesty mixed with some innocence to a certain degree.
Just as he thanked Professor Horne for being such a good and respectful listener, another student came. Well, all right, she came as he had invited her. Marius did not know this curly-haired girl, had never talked to her before, but she looked friendly and he also felt sorry when he saw her all alone earlier.
She asked if they were having a(n academic) discussion about religion. He said yes. Professor Horne said yes and welcomed her to speak. And as the girl spoke with such energy, Marius could not help but listen. He would like to ask questions later, but not now. For now, it was the professor's turn to ask.

Having eyes, but not seeing beauty; having ears, but not hearing music; having minds, but not perceiving truth; having hearts that are never moved and therefore never set on fire - these are the things to fear.

Bea flushed slightly at the Professor's words. They weren't even complimenting her or anything, but Bea had never had such deep conversations with adults other than her family. It was different with other adults. And an audience of another student. Especially one she didn't know.
"Me Nan is on me Ma's side. She is amazin'! My fauvourite person. We garden and grow herbs, and create poems and celebrate the holidays. We just celebrated Beltane, which is the fire festival. Nan's the one teachin me aboot paganism, although Ma thinks it's silly."
At that, Bea grew quite, slightly self conscious at the thought that she wasn't all knowing and telling others this. Maybe they would judge her for that? She tucked a curl behind her ear and bit her cheek from the inside. Looking at the boy, she realised that he hadn't introduced himself and she was still unsure of who he was and what house he was from. "Fit branch are ye from in Christianity?" She hoped that he understood her question. There were so many different branches under Christianity, and to be honest, she was quite unsure of how they all intersected and differentiated from each other. Perhaps she could get the boy to explain to her?

"I'm a practicing Roman Catholic," Marius responded to the curly-haired girl's question. His tone was friendly, but at the same time matter-of-factly.
Immediately after giving out his answer, though, the Hufflepuff felt a slight regret. Using the word "practicing" in his speech may make his reply sound quite like a brag, or so some people might consider. Oh dear, he really ought to work on stopping his bad habit of automatically speaking out the first thing that came to his mind. All right, it was not always the case, but he had a tendency to do so.
The Chinese-English boy swiftly racked his mind, the gears in his sharp brain immediately turned in full speed. He was determined to do something to fix his slip of tongue, to make the atmosphere more relaxed. His first thought was to mention that both his parents were believers, but it seemed like a bad idea. Telling Professor Horne and this student that his mum converted when she was a high school pupil did not sound like a good idea, either.
Sighing, Marius finally settled with perhaps the lamest, but at the same time the safest words for the time being. "I'm sorry, what's your name again? I don't think we've been introduced."

Beatrice rolled her eyes at the boy. Seriously, he had to state that?! Just because she didn't go to Church or whatever. Her Da's parents were the most seriously religious out of both sides of the family, but to be honest, their way (and the boy's it seemed) scared her a little. Possibly because her parents had shied away from letting their own children integrate with faith that way. Beatrice wasn't sure but no matter the reason, she didn't like the boy's pretentious attitude, and the insult to her and her family.
Back ram-rod straight and eyebrows scrunched, she introduced herself, wanting to out of habit to extend a hand in formal greeting, but not in this case. "A'm Beatrice. Beatrice Langstreth. Ravenclaw. And ye are?" Even though her mother had tried to help diminish her northern Scots accent, it was quite strong. She hoped the boy could understand her, or maybe not. It would give her a reason to get frustrated.
He seemed to gotten the idea that his words would and had caused a problem, and so Bea relented with the next few, rather harsh words that would have tripped from her tongue, even in the presence of a Professor. Seriously, questioning her practices and beliefs! What a doiterel fool.

"Brown," he answered, "Marius Brown." So à la James Bond, but the boy had no boastful intention at all when saying it. That was the way he always introduced himself, and the only reason he spoke that way was because it made him felt like the infamous fictional spy, like a special person on a nerve-wracking and exciting adventure which most definitely would end well instead of an ordinary school kid stuck on a boring school life.
The pupil across him mentioned that she was a Ravenclaw, but Marius was not in the mood of informing her that he was in Hufflepuff just because. She did not say anything about her year, though, which gave the preteen boy a chance to ask, "First year?" At the current moment, he had no interest to attract more of her attention toward him; therefore he decided that perhaps the best tactic to use was to focus the topic of the conversation to her instead.
If the other student was to confirm, Marius would like to ask her how she felt about studying at Hogwarts so far. But if she was to deny, he was ready to explain that he thought she was a first year because of her young face.
