SPECTATOR THREAD FOR BROOM RACING
Hufflepuff vs. Slytherin - Fall 2022
Set up in a convenient location for the entire course to be viewed, the stands were now occupied primarily by passionate fans of Hufflepuff and Slytherin who had come out to show support for their own houses. A few savvy students were attempting to pierce the fog in the middle sections of the course by viewing the race through their omniculars, to no avail. Those who arrive early might see Della Barfield, a little worse for wear after her own race that morning but spry and ready to moderate nonetheless, as she attempts to get the ruthless pigeons corralled back into their patch of forest. Smart spectators will keep their umbrellas out, even though it was now a sunny afternoon, in case a stray pigeon started targeting the audience instead of the racers. Della might also be seen flying a little too close to the giant squid who had been drafted as an obstacle for today's race. Her guise would be making sure the mighty mollusk was ready for his curtain call, but really she just loved looking at him up close.Date: October 15, 2022

Weather: Clear skies, sunny, but chilled and damp
This is a spectator thread for the Broom Race. 200 words is still the requirement for all threads. Please remember that you are not able to interface with the players in the race from a spectator thread.

xxxThe day's harsh winds were biting at Maggie's skin, whipping her ruddy cheeks raw and rendering them bright red. The tip of her nose was already cold to the touch, halfway to freezing and awful bothersome as it were. Plus, the sun was out and reflecting off of Maggie's glasses with a glare so furious it could kill. The glasses were a new addition--Maggie's vision seemed to just be getting worse and worse as time bore on, and, even though she forewent the spectacles in normal situations, she would likely be unable to see if she decided to leave them out this time. So they stayed fixed to her face, clear frames and big lenses making her eyes look slightly buggy. Stupid things.
Maggie was bundled up in a sweater, though--a deep red with a giant 'M' stitched to the front in true 'my mom made this for me' fashion. Red wasn't her house's color, but what she lacked in green sweaters she made up for in green pom-poms. She wore a white button up underneath, the collar sticking out from the neckline. Practicality stopped there. On the bottom was a pleated white skirt, because Maggie claimed it made her look like a cheerleader and it was cool. Not quite as cool when your legs were peppered with goosebumps and your only defense was slouch socks!
"This stinks," she whispered beneath her breath, arms wrapped around the cardboard sign she had stayed up far too late the night before making. It was slightly bent in the middle, courtesy of her trying to walk down here while also keeping warm, and the glitter glue was still a little bit gummy when you pressed too hard, but it wasn't half bad!Despite those efforts, Maggie certainly would not be pursuing a career in art.
Reads 'GO JUNE! (AND SLYTHERIN)'
All this wasn't to say that she wasn't excited to be Hogwarts' #1 cheerleader, though! Even though her hair kept blowing into her face and getting stuck on liberally applied cherry chapstick, that didn't mean that Maggie wasn't excited. She didn't really know how broom racing worked, as she had never thought to attend a game before this one, but it looked exciting enough! Maybe a little bit dangerous. Kinda scary, especially considering June's epic wipeout during their makeshift training session the year before, but June had recovered. Probably.
Maggie looked to another girl who sat on the stands with her, a Slytherin she thought she'd seen a few times in passing. A first year, she thought, vaguely remembering this girl's sorting (though most of the sorting had been interrupted by one Colin McCoire). "D'you know anything 'bout broom racing?" Maggie asked, wrinkling her nose slightly. "Bloody hell, I think my snot's freezing in my nose."

AngelFyre was stoked. It was Simon's first broom race of the season, and they were both excited. He was still a bit salty from their broom race loss over the summer, but she knew he would be nothing but focused on the competition ahead of him today. The team had been practicing hard and he had told her on more than one occasion that he felt very good about their chances, so long as the cheating, if there was any cheating, was not ignored as it had been in his last two matches. Simon did not like to lose; no one did, but how one won or lost a game was important to him. Sportsmanship is not just a word to Simon. It is also his ethos and that is but one reason why her fellow is a Hufflepuff.
AngelFyre had not attended summer camp so she had been forbidden from being able to attend his summer race. She was still salty about that, quite frankly. Some silliness about only camp attendees allowed. It was a huge stadium. It was not as if there was not room for Merlin's sake. A day pass was all that would have been required.
Ah, well. New season. New game. New opportunity to cheer her Top Gun on to victory.
It was a sunny day which was not the best weather condition for her daring dhampir in any circumstance, but that was fine. She knew he would take all necessary precautions to keep himself safe. She looked in the stands to see if Dave had arrived. They had tentatively batted the idea around to meet here to cheer their badgers on in general and Simon most specifically. She did not expect to arrive before him truth be told, but he was probably talking with his brother or engrossed in a book. She hoped he would show up soon because House Hufflepuff was underrepresented when it came to spectators, at least for now.
She smile and nodded to the Slytherin fans and then looked up to the Start line. Her heart filled with pride when she caught sight of him. She held up her poster and waved it like a crazy person as she yelled at the top of her lungs,
GOOOOOO, MAV!!
YOU OWN THOSE SNAKES!!!
SHOW THEM ALL WHO THE TOP GUN IS!!!
And if he heard her and looked down, he would see her waving up at him and blowing kisses in his direction. Shameless display of pride, but she knew he would love it.
And not to ignore her best friend whom she just caught sight of, she yelled up to Colin.
FLY SAFE COLIN! BEST OF LUCK!! YOU WILL NEED IT!! And if Colin were to look down and see her, she would wave and smile like crazy up to him as well.
This was going to be exciting!

Monica could hear the crowed growing in anticipation. It was a rather exciting occasion. Missing out of the action last year, mostly due to her own insecurities, Monica wasn't going to let those stop her this year! She was a proud Snake, and wanted to support her team, in addition she had 2 friends on the team, Mr. Colin McCoire Monica's faithful movie goer, as well and Miss June Selwyn, the girl Monica just couldn't figure out.
Climbing the stands she could see people beginning to fill them quickly. Perhaps she should have organized to come to the race with a friend. Scanning up and down she looked for a place to sit, looking out to the field from time to time watching the teams getting ready for flight. She spotted both Colin and June, but didn't do anything to gain their attention, didn't want to pull them out of their focus.
After walking for a bit, she came close enough to hear a familiar voice, Kiwi even perked up from under Monica's hair as if she could recognize the person too. and sure enough it was Maggie Hawkins. Monica smiled and made her way over to the fellow Slytherin. Seemingly entering in the middle of a conversation, Monica cleared her throat, "Hey Maggie...mind if I join you guys?" Monica looked over at the other student sitting with Maggie, reaching out her hand she added, "Hi, I'm Monica, Evans." At this point Monica was able to see Maggies sign, though it was slightly bent, it was a nice touch. Monica started wondering if she should have made a sign or brought any sort of 'typical fan props' to cheer on the team. But it didn't seem like anyone else did so far, so hopefully her presents would be enough.

Today was the day that the broom racing games were going to take place on, and as the Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw match had already happened, it was now time for the Hufflepuff vs Slytherin match. I was pretty excited to attend since this would be my first time going and I was going to see my friend Simon Kincaid in the race. I was also going to see my friend AngelFyre McCubbin, although she wouldn’t be racing, just cheering on Simon while he raced. I had taken my pair of Omnioculars to be able to see Simon, and the other players better, and set off out of the Outdoor Club Area where the broom race was going to take place. I walked up into the stands and looked around to see if AngelFyre had already gotten there, and it didn’t take me long to notice her, sitting there with her own poster, waving it around like crazy. As I walked up to her, I heard AngelFyre shouting “… SAFE COLIN! BEST OF LUCK! YOU WILL NEED IT!”.AngelFyre - #17451b
Dave - #fff79e
I looked over to the racers down bellow and upon seeing Colin McCoire there, I assumed that AngelFyre was referring to him. As I sat down next to her, I said “Are you seriously cheering for Colin AF? I mean, that’s the guy that threw me on the ground so hard, it took me forever just to get up.” Before I could continue, AngelFyre quickly said “Say what? Colin threw you down on the ground? When? Why? How?” I gave a slight chuckle before continuing in my usual tone “You know, I’m just playing with you, right? You can cheer on whoever you want. But he did cast the most powerful Flipendo I have ever seen during our unofficial duel earlier this month so the boy is a force to be reckoned with.” “Apologies for interrupting. I got a little excited.” AngelFyre said once I was finished speaking. “Ahhh. A Flipendo. That would explain it. This must have taken place in your dueling club, I take it? Coming from you, hearing how powerful his Flipendo is amounts to very high praise indeed. I know what such things mean to you.” “Actually, it didn’t take place in my dueling club although he did join it. It took place in an unofficial duel that we could use potions in, moderated by a Ravenclaw named Hunter. He’s that guy who always brews his potions perfectly on the first try during potions class. I don’t know if you see him in class, but I do and sometimes, I’m quite jealous of his results, And about Colin, yes, coming from me that is quite a lot of praise for someone whose in the same year as me, mainly because I tend to spend almost half of my free time practicing dueling spells in the Dueling Room.”
I then turned towards Colin myself and shouted at the top of my lungs: “HEY COLIN, IT’S NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN! I WISH YOU LUCK IN THE RACE, NOT THAT YOU’LL NEED IT.” I then turned to Simon before saying “YO SIMON, IT’S NICE TO SEE YOU HERE TOO AND I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK, BUT HOPEFULLY YOU WON’T NEED IT!”
Mentioning @AngelFyre McCubbin, @Colin McCoire (That was one hell of a Flipendo man), and @Simon Kincaid (Hopefully you win).

"Say what? Colin threw you down on the ground? When? Why? How? Such a thing sounded so unlike her kilted friend. There had to be more to it, and then she realized she jumped in before Dave had finished. "Apologies for interrupting. I got a little excited. Ahhh. A Flipendo. That would explain it. This must have taken place in your dueling club, I take it? Coming from you, hearing how powerful his Flipendo is amounts to very high praise indeed. I know what such things mean to you," and she smiled at her friend.
It pleased her immensely to know that Colin was so accomplished with his wand. Given that an actual hit contract was out on him, it brought a good deal of peace to her troubled mind to know he had powerful spell casting in his arsenal. She would prefer he never have to use it, but given the recent attacks of the past summer, that was looking to be an unlikely wish on her part.
"So, how have you been? We didn't really get a chance to talk too much at the Ball, so tell me how it has been for you to have your brother here this year? I see you a lot less so I have imagined you have been spending a good deal of your time with him," and then a mischievous tone animated her voice and she added, "or with Daphne." She looked at Dave surreptitiously from the corner of her eye. “Anything to report on that front? Inquiring minds, donchaknow,” and she smiled while looking for Simon once again.

"Excuse mee! Sorry, sorry..." Daphne had heard of the broom racing going on and had came early in order to get a good spot, sitting down near the top of the stands. Daphne knew that people seemed to have more interest for Quidditch over Broom Racing, so it wasn't that crowded to begin with. Even so, she didn't realize that David was here, being more focused on the umbrella she brought with her. It was pretty foggy so she didn't need it raining and messing up her hair. Everyone had such pretty posters, maybe she'd make one next time. Maybe even invite her friends to go with her? As she was sitting down, Daphne looked to the side, noticing a brunette girl beside her. She looked different.. perhaps a weird thing to say but true. Like she wasn't English, or more specifically from England. Not in a bad way either. Perhaps Daphne was just being too nosy or overreacting? It wasn't right to have those thoughts, everyone was unique in their own way. She could only imagine if someone thought of her the same way, she doubted that being viewed differently would make her feel good. "Hello..? Hello, my name is Daphne! How are you? I haven't seen you here before, well I am a first year so I guess that's typical heh."

Interacts with: @David HowardBefore Dave could even respond, the racers quickly kicked off and took flight. It was a blur of yellow and green zipping through the skies, and AngelFyre was anxiously sort of bounce-sitting in her seat. She of course wanted Hufflepuff to be victorious, but she mostly wanted Simon to have fun and be safe. She had been to enough broom races and practices to think that the idea of "safe" was likely not possible, but it never hurt to toss the idea out into the universe on his behalf.
Magic sports were brutal, whether a broom was involved or not.
"Hey, Dave! Guess who got her own set of omnioculars this morning? I owled a rush order for them last night after the Quidditch match. I wanted to be able to see Simon as best I could during his matches. He does not even know I have them yet. They are going to be great to have at the Hexwizard Tournament, too, I bet."
She was looking through them as she was speaking to Dave, trying to lock onto her fellow in the mayhem that is the beginning of just about all races. When she dialed in on him, it was just as he was being ripped by some thorns. Seeing that in slow motion was not her favorite thing, but she did admire the look of resolve he quickly replaced the look of pain with in those few moments. When Simon was determined, she knew those snakes needed to watch their slithering backs.
She left Simon to try and locate Colin in the fray. He was bleeding, too, and she gasped aloud as she saw him run into a branch, hurting both his neck and his shoulder. His look was one of more immediate surprise than pain, but he was going to be feeling that for the rest of the game unfortunately. Then she laughed when his face contorted and his nose started twitching in slow motion. He must be smelling the pigeon poop!
AngelFyre set her omnioculars down for a moment and looked ahead of where Simon and Colin currently were flying. She had heard people in the stands talking about how the morning racers had been "graced" with pigeon poop while flying through the trees. That had to be driving Colin's sensitive nose crazy. She laughed a little and hoped Simon missed getting covered in it, but was not above thinking that it might be a distraction to Colin, and therefore a Hufflepuff edge. She did not want to see Colin hurt, of course, but pigeon poop? Bring it on!!!
"Come on, Hufflepuff," she said as much to herself as to anyone. They had all flown too far away to probably hear her even if she did yell it at the top of her lungs, but she was still cheering them on as she could.
As she set her omnioculars down in her lap, she saw Daphne taking a seat not too far in front of them. She looked over at Dave whose expression gave nothing away. His eyes were focused on the racers. AngelFyre was not even certain he knew Daphne was here, but when she thought about it, she and Simon between them had asked him about Daphne a number of times and he had yet to respond.
Normally she would tease him, but maybe that particular subject was not something his good natured self would appreciate being teased about all things considered. Instead, she smiled at her friend, unbeknownst to him, as he was watching the race and she turned her focus back to it as well.
If Dave had news he wanted to share, she would let him do it in his own time.

“So, how have you been? We didn't really get a chance to talk too much at the Ball, so tell me how it has been for you to have your brother here this year? I see you a lot less so I have imagined you have been spending a good deal of your time with him. Or with Daphne.” AngelFyre said, with that last bit containing a hint of mischief in her voice. “Anything to report on that front? Inquiring minds, donchaknow?” “Oh, well, about that.” I said, and knowing that I was about to start on a very long rant, I began preparing for it, First, I fully exhaled until there was no more air left in my lungs before taking in a deep breath until there was no more space left in my lungs, before finally spewing everything out so fast, it would give AngelFyre no chance to interrupt me unless she did it outright or was fast enough to take advantage of the breaks I occasionally took which I used to gulp in more air. “It’s been great having Matthew here and while at first I was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t sorted into Hufflepuff, I got over it when I was reminded by him that he can’t stop talking for more then two minutes, not that I counted. I mean, at least I can shut up for a few hours when needed, but the guy just doesn’t seem to have the ability to do that. And while it’s a good thing when we’re hanging out together, it isn’t when you’re trying to do your homework in pease or when you’re trying to go to sleep. Now he’s usually asleep by nine twenty-ish, but it’s still annoying when you’re trying to get to sleep early and because younger students have a curfew of nine o’clock, it’s even more annoying to those in his dorm to have to listen to him. Now only know that the sleep thing happens in the dorms because if two of his friends slash dorm mates who I also happen to hang out with.”AngelFyre - #17451b
Dave - #fff79e
With my air supply fully exhausted now, I took in another gulp of air before continuing. “Now as for Daphne, we might’ve bumped into each other once or twice since the ball which resulted in a few conversations which albeit short, were pretty nice to have. The reason they were short however, was because whenever we bumped into each other, either one, or both of us had plans that prevented it from being longer. Also, she’s a very pretty girl, and I know that you know that, but I’m bringing it up because I have a slight crush on her. Also, I’ve noted that she’s a bit insecure for two reasons, one being that she apologized to me multiple times for reasons that weren’t clear to me. The second time she did this, she apologized because she didn’t mean to say that I was boring, when previously, she called herself boring. Well, sort of. And this is where we come to the second reason. See, what she specifically said was something along the lines of ‘Sometimes, I feel like I’m too boring for others, like there's nothing truly special about me.’” And now my air supply had run out once more and while I could could continue talking, I’d only be able to make it a few more words in which is why I stopped to take another deep breath. “But that’s where she’s wrong, see, aside from being pretty, she’s also a very good dancer. Now of course, she might be a bad dancer by someone else’s standards, but I had little to no trouble dancing with her apart from trying not to step on her massive dress. And I actually had fun with her at the petting zoo because she made them look appealing to me, something I was hoping she’d do because I didn’t particularly like most of the creatures there, aside from the scarlet red salamanders. In my opinion though, that last one in particular is special. See, ot everyone can just take a subject that you don’t like and make it seem fun, but she did it.”
As I was talking however,, I noticed that the broom race would soon begin so I said “Enough about Daphne though, the broom race is about to start.” As the broom race was about to start, I quickly put my omnioculars to my eyes. Moments later, I heard AngelFyre say “Hey, Dave! Guess who got her own set of omnioculars this morning?” I tore my eyes away from my pair of omnioculars, and sure enough, AngelFyre was already starring through them. AngelFyre continued speaking as I looked back into my omnioculars, saying “I owled a rush order for them last night after the Quidditch match. I wanted to be able to see Simon as best I could during his matches. He does not even know I have them yet. They are going to be great to have at the Hexwizard Tournament, too, I bet.” “Dang,” I started, “that was a pretty fast order, how did they even manage that? Did you go on Amazon and order before six for same day delivery or something? I’d expect the owls to be slower then that because I’m pretty sure that the owl would need some time to rest and that type of stuff due to the length of the journey, but then again, they might be using a different owl on rush orders this far away. And you’re absolutely right, these omnioculars are going to be useful at the Hexwizard Tournament, especially considering that we probably won’t be sitting close to the contestants.”
As the exchange between AngelFyre and I was going on up in the stands, l was looking closely at the contestants, and noticed that as they entered the thorny area of the course, some of the players got injured. It was mostly the Hufflepuffs as all of them except one got scraped by the thorns, whilst only two Slytherins got scraped by them. Both, Simon and Colin got scraped at which point I said “Ouch, that must've hurt.” and as I saw just how different this sport was compared to dueling, I was beginning to regret telling Colin that he wouldn’t need the good luck I had wished him. Pretty soon, the racers would move onto the area with the trees in it where some of them would bump into the trees ahead, one of them being Simon, while others would narrowly miss and get by unharmed, from the trees at least. Oh, and that was before the pigeons begin to poop on some unlucky players. “Man I hope there are no pigeons still lying in wait for Simon up ahead. The horror of that stink in my nostrils could rival the horror of my singing in his ears.” AngelFyre said as she laughed a bit. Luckily, Simon wasn’t hit, not that he was a target in the first place, but of the six racers that were targets of the pigeons, five got hit and of the five, two of them got particularly unlucky, having been covered with so much pigeon poop that it looked like it would probably take more then just a few minutes in the shower to wash the smell off completely.

Dave responded in his very particular Dave-like fashion, and it warmed AngelFyre through and through. It surprised her to learn in those first few moments he started speaking just how much she had missed their conversations. She enjoyed watching him speak as much as listening to him, because honestly, it was always a thought in her head that he might just push his lungs free of enough air that he might collapse. She knew he was far from stupid and would not let that happen, but the thought was pretty well cemented in her mind each time he spoke. One thing she did know... the boy had incredible lung power bookended by equally impressive breath control. That had to come in handy somewhere along the line.
"Sounds like the Sorting hat may have done you a solid, sleep-wise anyway, by not placing Matthew in Hufflepuff. The really good news is that he is at Hogwarts now and you are no longer truly separated. That must feel good. I am glad for you that you have family here. I think we both can relate to how hard it can be to come here knowing no one. Matthew was at least spared that, so good for you, Big Brother Dave!
And then the part of the conversation she was most interested in hearing about, not gonna lie, was what Dave addressed next... Daphne Sapphirus. AngelFyre listened very carefully while not just staring at Dave as if he were an animal in a zoo. She reminded herself to blink when he admitted having a crush on the pretty first year, and told herself to swallow and occasionally divert her eyes back to the race to seem more natural. By the time he had finished, AngelFyre was jumping up and down on the inside on behalf of her friend. But all she knew was of his crush, which of course, was not evidence of Daphne's feelings whatsoever. This could be heaven or it could heartbreak. She was so hoping for heaven.
"That all sounds wonderful, Dave. Yes, she is a very pretty girl, indeed, but I am so glad to know that there is more there that attracts you. No matter how physically beautiful one is, it will eventually fade, so there better be something to engage another's heart and mind when the physical bloom is no longer obvious. If there is more there, then she... or he... will always be seen as beautiful to those who love them. I am not suggesting this is love, but it is nice to hear you describe the ability she has to make the uninteresting surprisingly interesting to you. That is a gift and you are right to recognize how special that is." Pulling a Dave, she paused to take a breath before continuing.
"And by the way, you two could be the worst dancers in the world... and you are not by the way, I am an eye witness to that fact... but even if you were, it should not matter so long as you both are having fun. That is one of the gifts Simon has given me in our time together. Sadly for you, you know what a horror show my singing is," and she laughed while rolling her eyes at the unvarnished truth of that statement, "and Simon knows it, too, but he has a way that reminds me of it in the funniest and sweetest ways possible. The result is that he makes me feel okay about having 'The Best Worst Voice at Hogwarts'... a title I have proudly self-imposed on myself by the way... and supports me in the moments I do choose to sing instead of silencing myself because he knows it makes me happy. The result has not changed the quality of my singing, but I am no longer self-conscious about it either. I can dance like no one's watching and sing like no one's listening."
She caught herself and apologized for making a speech. "Sorry about that. Just my long-winded way of saying to you that I am happy if you are happy because of a girl who can do that for you." For AngelFyre, all roads led to Simon but that did not mean everyone she encountered wanted to travel those roads with her, and she laughed. She brought the omnioculars up and felt the pressing desire to see her fellow after singing (pun definitely intended) his praises. He was so far away but had no idea how close she felt to him right then.
Then Dave cracked her up with questions about owls and Amazon and her rush order. "As I am not privy to magical mail supply chain dynamics, I have no way of being able to answer your queries other than to say, 'Whatzamatta you?' You know the internet does not work at Hogwarts. It interferes with the magic. How could I possibly use Amazon? All I know is I sent the owl off last night and the package arrived about 20 minutes before I left to come here. I put a rush on it, but honestly, I figured to receive them midweek. It surprised me, too," and she shrugged. "Maybe there is a relay operation of sorts for owls on certain routes like the Pony Express used to have back in the 1880's in the USA. You know, a kind of pass the baton type thing to keep things moving."
And because he was still staring straight ahead at the race, she decided to offer up the following. "By the way, Daphne is a couple of rows below us if you did not know. I am just throwing that out there in case you might want to use this as a non-hurried opportunity to speak more with her, " and she smiled impishly as she put her omnioculars up to her eyes before he could look her in the eyes.
"Man I hope there are no pigeons still lying in wait for Simon up ahead. The horror of that stink in my nostrils could rival the horror of my singing in his ears," and she just laughed.
