Amina chewed her toast thoughtfully and stared into space. This was the first event she had experienced with her Quidditch team and where they had traveled together as a group. It was exciting and a little bit annoying at the same time. That stupid ball... She couldn't possibly ask one of her teammates without looking like she was in need of help. They should realize that she was in demand and that being on a team with her wasn't enough to get her off as a date. Of course she would have liked to go with Valentin, maybe Yeffy or even grumpy pants Felix, but she would never ask them. And if they did want to ask her, she'd rather be able to make herself rare and say that she already had someone. Otherwise she would make it much too easy for them. But that presented her with the problem of not having a date. Not yet.

Lost in thoughts, she brushed a pale red strand of her shoulder-long hair out of her face and let her gaze wander slowly through the hall. It was still very early and most of the people were not there yet. She didn't see anyone from her team either. Since it was Saturday, she had exchanged her school uniform for a washed-out gray hoodie and her blue jeans. Not exactly the perfect outfit to ask someone out, but who cared. She usually always came out looking pretty good.

Her bright green eyes brushed the guys sitting at the table with her. She had randomly chosen any of the tables, as the concept of houses was completely foreign to her. Some of the students around her wore green scarves. She frowned briefly and tried to remember which house it had been. Smittering? Something like that. It didn't matter. The only requirement for her ball date to be was that he wasn't bad looking and wasn't on the opposing quidditch team. That would be more of a political statement and not in her interest.

Her eyes lingered on a boy with light brown hair sitting not far from her. Amina tilted her head and examined him closely. If he noticed, she would not avert her eyes. She was used to people staring at her unblinkingly, from her point of view there was nothing to it. His profile looked good, she thought. Sufficiently good. A mischievous smile curled the right corner of her mouth and she tried to make eye contact. If that didn't work, she would flick a scrap of paper at him.

"Hey. Good morning. Do you have a date for this ball yet?" She spoke perfect American English, her Bulgarian ancestry barely audible. Still, he might have trouble understanding her, since most of her mouth was still stuffed with toast. She swallowed the bite as gracefully as possible. Then she leaned over the table and held out her hand to offer it for a handshake. Her arm very barely missed the jam. "Hi. Amina."

The sounds of the Great Hall joined the list of many venues where Thomas drowned out the voices of others. Not an easy task for the boy, discounting the opinions of others a consistent hurdle along his development. A crutch he carried willingly with the legacy of his father, now proven false. A fabrication from his mother to protect him from rejection. Of course she could not account for the change of heart the man would have many years later.

The silence symbolized peace for the Slytherin 5-3-4th year? He's been here a few years, okay? Others can count. Thomas wasn't here for math, nor was he here for rolled oats. He was here, in this castle, for the very first time...cause he wanted to be. Hag trauma aside, the end of his father's mystery would assist in burying his internal conflicts for now. Does that mean he will alter from his reputation as the typical broody asshole? Oh, you know the answer.

Yet where there was peace, there were disruptors of said peace. The state of the world does not reach its status without both. Enter pink girl, a student the boy did not recognize, though she appeared relatively close in age. "Morn--" Thomas narrowed his eyes, her blunt approach amidst full toast chew was an impressive feat. Her lack of fucks to give left the boy feeling relaxed.

She swiftly took a seat across him, reaching forward with her hand. Thomas tilted his head for a moment, relaxed in his response "You greeted me twice." Eyeing the serving plate of toast, he took a piece of toast and placed it in her hand, assuming that's what she wanted. "They must not have toast in..." Allowing the girl to state the pink fortress from which she hails while he collected himself to offer an answer. "If I say yes will you leave?" It's worked before.

Amina was not at all scared to be rejected. If so - other breakfast tables also had pretty boys. So she just grinned and shrugged his comment away. "Double is better," she found, nodding knowingly at him.

But he still managed to make her blink in confusion as he placed a toast in her hand. The girl swallowed the huge bite and overcame that distraction within her mission in the next second. She was the type of person who took things as they came and just rolled with it. Besides, she was already inwardly praising herself for her spontaneous decision. This boy looked like someone with whom, or at whose expense, one could have a lot of fun. So she withdrew the hand with the fresh toast with a smug grin and covered the bread with a fried egg.
"Oh! Thanks! I see - the perfect gentleman. And… Durmstrang." She couldn’t help but sound a little proud when she mentioned her school. Her chest popped and her smile deepend. Then, she already shoved the food into her face. “And I am hungry, shut up.” Her tone clearly gave away that she was just playfully pretending to be offended. A soft giggle bubbled up and she shook her head.
The bulgarian loved those kinds of interactions that had a huge potential to turn out very weird. But this boy… What's his name? Oh he didn't introduce himself yet, did he? He had some sort of dry humor or he was simply a bit rude. Either way, she loved it already.

His reply though was a bit unexpected. It made her stop chewing and then looking awkwardly left and right. If I say yes will you leave? She needed to suppress a grin. "Can I… finish eating my breakfast first?" A few crumbs landed on the table since her mouth was still stuffed with this delicious bread that didn’t defeat hunger at all. Seriously, why did they put paper bread with almost zero protein on the table and labeled it as breakfast? But really tasty.
When her mouth was finally free, she just shrugged and tilted her head. "So you agree, just like that? Without any questions? Do you like blind dates? What if I am a crazy person?" She wiggled her eyebrows meaningfully. "And what, oh mysterious companion, shall I call you?" Perfect. If he agreed she had the perfect pawn to get attention from the two guys that she was looking for. And she could already feel that she and the toast-critic would have a blast. Well - at least she would.

The standards of ladylike behavior were nowhere to be found, but Thomas didn't mind. He rather appreciated someone that was comfortable in their own skin, unafraid of how others may perceive them. It was a hurdle he struggled with many years, keeping his eyes forward, unaffected by the voices that traveled around his passage.

With age came context, and who wouldn't find a boy like Thomas Lestrange the least bit peculiar. His hag happenings are well documented, even aided by his own hand when writing an article that entailed his position in the palm of a crone's hand. At age fifteen, he was ready to embrace the reputation he has garnered over the years, but a small part of him wishes it to be subdued after such a long absence.

After all, many more victims have been gathered in addition to the Erin Ryan's, the Howard White's, and Ivy Bellamy's. The coven's reach has extended, multiplied, casting a shadow over the campus, keeping the untarnished in fear of what a reach may bring. Though there were some left, who were unafraid. Thomas Lestrange intended to join them.

"Can I finish eating my breakfast first?"

Thomas glared at pinkie, shrugging his shoulders with a dismissive push of his plate forward. "Considering you'll have enough for the two of us, I will leave you to it." The boy stood up swiftly, gathering his journal and other belonging that lay upon the table, sliding them into a book bag. Her status as a Durmstrang student was all he needed to know to accept the toast queen. "I'd be so lucky." If she was a crazy person. "Call me Tom." The boy stated plainly, hurling the bag over his shoulder. "Look for the beard." If his course of actions wasn't confusing enough for Amina, he would aid a bewildered impression with a warm smile before being on his way.

Another ball, another random date.

The young Durmstrang girl probably looked like a hamster as she grinned at the boy with stuffed cheeks "How very kind of you. And yes, you have no idea how lucky you are." Satisfied she leaned back and looked up at him as he made his way to her feet, the grin widening to an assuming and satisfied one. The adventure hung in the air and made her eyes sparkle - exactly what she liked. The risk. The uncertainty. The action.
Not sure if he felt the same way. He had not looked too excited or like he cared much. Not that she did mind. On the contrary. She liked those kinds of people that didn’t take things too seriously. And yet, she felt some sort of warmth and comfort when he suddenly offered her a warm smile that she returned.

She would not hold him back, not even look if he still was there. Her eyes had returned to her plate but she took the time to wave so that he could see if he bothered to turn around on his way out. "Beard, got it. See ya, Tommy!"

His comment about her appetite didn’t affect her at all. Humming a small random melody she finished her toast and then pushed her plate with a happy sigh. What a morning. While other girls would have probably wondered what kind of costume he would put on and - help God - try to match it, Amina didn’t even think about it.
Her gaze wandered into the distance as she thoughtfully took a sip of her orange juice. Now, she really was looking forward to the ball. He looked cute when he smiled. Good. She liked cute boys, that was a nice perk having him with her. If he actually showed up. This had been way too easy - like if you ask someone for their phone number and they smiled at you and gave you a fake one. Well, he would miss out or dodge a bullet in that case.
