Darkening Depths
Constantine sat by the Great Lake, resting his weight on the grass that grew behind him. The sky was a pale blue in comparison to the fiery sun that graced the water with a pleasant glow. However, said light still couldn't penetrate the murky depths of the lake, to his utter disappointment. If the sun shone in just the right way, at just the right time, maybe he'd catch a glimpse of the unusual things that lived there. It was an extremely optimistic thought, but it kept him wishing none the less. Constantine often spent his free time by the lakeside, in an attempt to gawk at the creatures he'd read about oh so many times. But, to no avail, he hadn't spotted anything yet. Though, he knew something was out there.
The Hufflepuff kicked off his shoes, not bothering to undo the laces, before stuffing his socks into them. He put them out of the water's reach, resting them against a mossy rock. The last thing he wanted to do was trudge back in sludge filled shoes. Constantine skipped over to the water, shivering as the cold embraced him. Even though the sun appeared to warm the lake, it seemed that this was not the case. He waded around for a bit, kicking the water to watch it splash. A few students were doing the same, although none dared to go further than a couple metres from the shore. Brushing the thought aside, the Hufflepuff let out a small yelp, hobbling away from a singular sharp rock on the lakebed.

Evelyn was watching as her fellow students waded around in the water. She had no intention of swimming though. Even if there were probably no Kelpie under the murky depths she knew that other malicious creatures lurked there. Everybody else seemed to be having fun at least. So she was content to watch them wade around to escape the summer heat. It looked like all of them knew how to swim but she wanted to keep an eye on things. Just to make her feel better about it.
That was why she wasn't wearing her scarf or outer robes and instead was sitting atop them in her pants and undershirt. She had her hair pulled back so that it doesn't obscure her vision. Which was a good thing. Evelyn absently scratched at her ankle. What probably would've ended up being amputated in a muggle hospital was reduced to minor scarring with the help of magic. She shuddered at the thought of anybody else being yanked around by the demon that is a kelpie.
Her attention was drawn up from her fiddling by a quiet yelp. It was just a hufflepuff boy she recognized from her first year though. He must've stepped on something or gone deeper then he though he would. The boy really should be more careful, she shook her head, he could get seriously hurt.

After stumbling to regain his balance, Constantine sheepishly peered around, to see if anyone had spotted his trip. Luckily, most people were minding their own business. Or at least, everyone aside from a student that was content to observe, and not join in. It was odd, the hot weather made everyone melt, so why did she sit at the sidelines like that? Red crept to his cheeks, slightly embarrassed that he'd had an audience. The Hufflepuff spun on his heel, to face the lake, and not the girl. Constantine covered his eyes with a hand, shielding them from the sun. Maybe the girl didn't want to venture into the water because she was alone? It didn't seem very likely, as the humidity was enough to make any loner jump into the water within five seconds flat.
Perhaps she needed a push in the right direction? Deciding that he didn't want to get his robe wet, the Hufflepuff took it off. Crumpling it into a ball with little care, he tossed it to the riverbank. Most of it had reached the land, though the sleeve sunk beneath the water. He simply turned away with a shrug of his shoulders, before crouching low into the lake. It wouldn't hurt to be a little over the top, would it? Not thinking the decision through, Constantine decided to pretend as if he was being dragged into the water, stomach down and clawing at the pebbles on the lakebed. In actuality, the lake had been rather shallow - Constantine could stand in it fairly easily. The boy placed his face into the water, trying to hide his laughter.

Evelyn was shifting her legs to regain the bloodless when the kid, he was her age but still, flipped over. He seemed to be struggling, maybe he got his pant leg or shirt caught on something? But he wasn't turning over. The lake section he was in was maybe three or so feet deep? Just about. It was easy enough to stand in though. So she didn't think he was having a problem with swimming. Internally cursing her inability to see somebody struggling she pushed herself off the bank and into the water as quickly as she could reasonably do without breaking a bone.
Evelyn's pulse sped up like a jack rabbit the second she got closer to the lake. The water is fine. The water is fine. She repeated the mantra in her head, there is nothing in here but people. When her pant leg got snagged on a rock she momentarily panicked, but the force of her sliding in kept her moving. If she wasn't a good swimmer she might've had trouble turning around in the water but as it was she was able to use her momentum to roll into a butterfly stroke. Her arms brushed the pebbled bottom. When she got to him she noticed he wasn't in any trouble. Feeling extremely miffed about being tricked into the water she pushed his shin to force him to spin around. The least he could do is face her like a man.

Constantine got to his knees, water droplets cascading from his face. His plan had worked, albeit to the annoyance of the girl. The Hufflepuff looked at her sheepishly, wringing out the bottom of his shirt into the lake. "Oh, hello." The boy greeted in a friendly manner, as if he hadn't just faked being in imminent danger. He shook out his hair, picking a few stray bits of pondweed-like plant from his already messy uniform. "It's a nice day outside, isn't it?" Constantine pointed out, turning so that the sun would warm his face. She didn't seem convinced by his display, prompting him to laugh.
"Ah, I guess I should apologise, right?" Constantine chuckled, a humorous look in his eye. He hadn't meant to startle the girl, just lure her into the water so that she could cool off. In hindsight, it wasn't the greatest idea that he'd had, but it'd worked none the less. "No harm done, though." Constantine put his hands up in defence, cocking an eyebrow. He was expecting an angered remark, but a well deserved one at that. The boy sat patiently in the water, waiting for a response. Constantine swished his hands about in the water. It was a lot better than sitting out in the baking heat, that was certain.

She growled. He was really full of himself wasn't he? "It was a nice day until you tried your stunt."
Evelyn would've complained more but she was too busy climbing out of the water and onto the bank. Because he was the one who got her into the water she sat on his conveniently placed robe. She didn't care if he apologized or not. He had been incredibly inconsiderate either way. Then he had the audacity to say no harm done! She wanted to rip out her hair with how irritated she was, but it cycled right around to her being deathly calm.
"None at all. It's not like you pretended your life was in immediate danger without any consideration as to who was nearby. No of course not. You completely thought this through! All you were missing was the screaming as you get dragged down into the bottom of the lake! But why would that happen? You weren't drowning after all."
Her heartbeat hadn't calmed down at all since she exited the water. In fact her hands were tucked around her hips and they were trembling. She had said her peace, any more would draw more attention to themselves. All he could do now is stick his foot in his mouth again. Which she wasn't completely sure he wouldn't do considering his track record right now.

"That's a shame." Constantine said, commenting on the fact she'd gotten out of the water as soon as she'd jumped in. The Hufflepuff continued to paddle around in the water for a bit, the girl by no means dampening his mood. He wasn't intending to be cruel, but his carefree attitude and impulsive actions weren't exactly the best combo. Once he'd decidedly had enough of lounging in the lake, he edged closer to the girl, but remained in the water. At least if the student got too mad, he could retreat back into the lake.
Giving his robe a sympathetic glance, he returned his attention back to the girl. "I had not!" Constantine objected, settling on his shins. He'd thought about doing it, sure, but not of the consequences that came as a result. "I'm not sure if you can scream while you're drowning, with your lungs filling with water and all that." The Hufflepuff contemplated, not denying that he hadn't pretended to be drowning. "I was only doing it so you'd come into the lake." Constantine added with a small pout.
The girl looked to be a little more startled than he was about the ordeal, though he was certain that his acting hadn't been that convincing. "Well, I thought there was no harm done at least. I think I'd know, too - I've already almost been squished by a giant tree." Constantine murmured, absentmindedly running over a small scar on his cheek.

Evelyn had calmed herself down by the time her fellow hufflepuff had stopped speaking. She wasn't quite ready to laugh at the whole ordeal but she wasn't going to start talking to herself again. Instead she found she was able to hold an almost civil conversation.
"You can scream when you're under water. You just don't make any sound. Then the water fills your lungs when you have to breath and you start drowning."
The hufflepuff boy had the nerve to pout after admitting out loud that he had been trying to force her into the lake. Did he maybe think she was content not to enter the water?
"Next time consider that some people don't want to swim and wouldn't have if there was a lifeguard on duty like there should be in this lake filled with who knows what."
He had the nerve to say "Well I thought there was no harm done at least.-"
Her clenched smile twitched. No harm done. Of course not! He brushed right past the whole thing though. Instead he was talking about getting squished by a giant twig. She wrung off her hair once he was done speaking. Evelyn was tired of the water dripping down her neck.
"So because you got attacked by a large bowtruckle you feel the need to pretend you're dying? Do you get an adrenaline rush from it or something?"

"Well, it's a hot day outside. You might've gotten heatstroke - if there was a paramedic nearby, I wouldn't have done it." He argued, mirroring what the girl had said a couple seconds prior. In his defence, he did have the student's best interest in mind - was wanting someone to have fun such a bad thing?
Constantine's mouth turned into a frown, his voice grave, "That's not funny. I don't care what you say about me, but that large bowtruckle almost ended my friend's life." He warned seriously. That event was still a sore spot for Constantine, and he still harbored a lot of resentment for that tree. Not because he had been hurt, but because his friend had been. After a few moments, he returned to a more neutral expression.
"I don't get anything from it. You were alone, so I thought you might want some company. It wasn't the best method, I admit, but it was just the first thing that came to mind. I'm a Hufflepuff, not a Ravenclaw, you know." The boy answered sourly.
The stunts he pulled were usually well received, so he was willing to accept his loss on this one. "For what it's worth, sorry." Of course, he didn't think she'd accept it, but he wasn't one to not try.

Evelyn humphed. She guessed she should of taken her own advise. "Hopefully your friends well."
"For what it's worth I probably would have ended up swimming some time during my time at Hogwarts. I guess you just sped up the process." It wasn't like she didn't know how to swim. She's actually quite adept at holding her breath, but that was at the lake back home where she knew that the creatures in the lake had been tamed. At least the ones that had shown themselves. Here though she felt like she was in a pool of Merpeople while holding one of their sacred treasures.
It just wouldn't end well for her. She probably wouldn't tell him that. They were virtual strangers after all. He ended up apologized at least. Unconsciously she had mirrored what he said like he had mirrored what she said. When she realized this the first thing that came to mind was, is this going to become a thing?
That would be strange but not the strangest thing she's ever done. There was something she curious about, is it universal or just something she has to deal with. "Are you afraid to climb trees because of the incident?" She scratched at her collarbone to pull the moist shirt from her skin. It was mostly dry because of the sun but it was still clingy.
