Hey, that's mine!
I don't really like reading, but I've always wanted to build it as a habit. Have I said that multiple times, and failed to commit to it? Yes. But this time it'll be different. I didn't really know what book I was looking for, but I figured once I saw it, I would know. I made my way to the ground floor, to the library and walked through aisles and aisles of books, topics ranging from types of frogs, to Spanish influenza (whatever that is). Nothing caught my eye, but I was determined to find a book.
Finally, in the teen fiction aisle, I spotted a book I recognized, The Fault in the Galaxies. I'd heard a lot about it, so I reached out to grab it. As I tried to pull it towards me, it didn't budge. I pulled harder. It almost felt like someone was pulling from the other side. There were a couple holes in the shelves from people taking out books, so I peeked through, and looked at who was pulling the same book I was. Me and the other person locked eyes, and I immediately ducked away from the view of the person, my hand still on the book. No way was I letting someone else take my book.

Hey, that's mine!
With a sigh, Maggie picked up the stack of books. It was higher than her liking. She was almost worried she was going to faceplant. Slowly, she put the books back in place.
On her way out of the library, she saw a familiar book in the side of her eye. She had read it once before and had loved it since then. Sadly it was always someone who got it before her. But now it was hers. She hurried towards it and tried taking it but it was stuck. Her face made a confused grimace. She leaned back, using her body weight to try to pull it out but to no use. A face peeked at the confused girl through the gaps in the bookshelf. Their eyes connected, but only for a millisecond. The person ducked out of sight. Maggie tried to pull it again, but no. Still stuck. "Let go!" She hisses. It was her book! She lifts her right leg and puts it against the bookshelf. With her hands still on the book, she straightens her leg causing a little pain in her back. But it worked a little. The book came closer to her side. She grins.

Hey, that's mine!
I had a firm grip on the book, but I had a feeling the girl on the other side was stronger than me, which isn't really saying much, as I'm not really that strong to begin with. I realized I needed something I had a more even chance of winning, like a flip of a coin or a game of rock-paper-scissors. "Uhh. Can we flip a coin for it or something?" I asked. Hoping the girl was fair and nice, I let go of the book, and it immediately left my sight.
I dashed over to the other side of the shelf, to see the girl. I hadn't seen much of her before but now, I could see her clearly. With dark brown hair, that went a bit past her shoulders, and a petite body type, she was annoyingly pretty. I guessed she was from asian descent, from her facial features, though I didn't want to assume. She hadn't answered my question yet, but I still took off my bag and dug through it for a coin, which I eventually found, a silver sickle. "Heads or tails?" I asked, getting ready to flip it onto my palm, after rolling it on my palm for a second.

Hey, that's mine!
Maggie used all the strength she had pulling the book. A voice interrupted her concentration. "Uhh. Can we flip a coin for it or something?" And suddenly Maggie flew backward. Her bum hit the ground with a nasty crash. She winced in pain but got up. The girl causing Maggie's injury came into sight. Even though Maggie was annoyed, she had to admit the girl was pretty. No, beautiful. Her red hair made her even more pretty. Maggie snapped out of her thoughts and looked at the girl who had her hand in her bag. It came up again with a silver sickle. "Heads or tails?" They got eye contact. It took her a couple of seconds to process the other girl’s words. "Oh." Maggie’s lips formed an O. "Heads." She nervously said. Of course, she could read another book. It wasn’t that. Maggie has always had a sore spot when it came to challenges and competitions. She became incredibly anxious and would cry if she didn’t get perfect results. It has always been like that. It was probably from her father who hated losing. Once, he had threatened to kill my uncle because he lost in a stupid game. She remembered it as if it was yesterday. Maggie’s eyes were glued to the silver sickle. As it flew, she closed her eyes. Please let it be heads... Please. She begged in her head and opened her eyes.

Hey, that's mine!
To be honest, I was glad when the girl said heads. I always thought tails was lucky, for me at least. I used my thumb to flick the coin into the air, and watched it flip multiple times, and caught it in my fist. Opening my hand, both of us watched closely, and I sighed to see it was heads. Grudgingly, I handed the girl the book. I stared at her for maybe a second too long, and decided to introduce myself. Why not? I liked a person with some spirit in their fight.
I gave her a broad grin, held out my hand for a handshake and said, "My name's Zoe, Gryffindor, year one. Sorry, about.." I gestured at the book and both of us, indicating the whole book fiasco. "I get a bit competitive, I guess."
The small debacle caused a few members of the library staff to shush us, and I replied with an apologetic smile. I made a mental note to make it up to them in the future, with edible treats, or a card. I may have a slight problem with people not liking me. I brought my attention back to the the girl, waiting for a response.

Hey, that's mine!
It was heads. Maggie almost did a victory dance. If it weren’t for that they were in a library, she probably would. The other girl handed Maggie the book. Maggie glanced at her face and got a little guilty. She didn’t look sad but… She were about to give up the book to the girl when she spoke:“My name's Zoe, Gryffindor, year one. Sorry, about..” She gestured at the book and both of them. “Maggie. I’m a Ravenclaw, also in year one.” Maggie couldn’t help but smile. ”I get a bit competitive, I guess.” Zoe said and Maggie couldn’t relate more. She let out a little giggle. “I understand.”
Some library staffs shushed the girls and Zoe gave them an apologetic smile. While she did Maggie couldn’t help but stare at her. Were they friends now? She hoped so. Maggie has always been a huge introvert and only ever felt comfortable around her few friends. But Zoe… They had fought but Maggie couldn’t help but like her. She glanced at the other girl with a little smile on her lips. She hoped that even after they said goodbye and parted at the library, they would meet again. Maggie tried her best to come up with something clever to ask the other girl. Nothing came to mind. Should i ask her what her favorite food is? No, that's boring. Maybe what her parents names are? Absolutely not, i would sound like a creep!

Hey, that's mine!
Hoping the girl, who I now knew as Maggie, wasn't one to hold a grudge, I wondered if she would want to be friends, or at least have a conversation this pleasant afternoon. "I'm not a particularly avid reader, any suggestions for good books?" Even if I don't know much about her, I trust her book choices. I mean, the fact we chose the same book was enough, not to mention she was a Ravenclaw. I noticed a small table with a few chairs nearby, glanced back at Maggie, and asked "Wanna sit down?" Before even she had a chance to answer, I sit down and quietly scratch the wooden table, and feel the scrapings of wood get into my nails. It's a bad habit I developed when I came to Hogwarts, and I've been trying to cut it out.
My mind started to go elsewhere, thoughts of home and family flood my mind. My cousins, close friends who I had to leave behind, and my bedroom. Hogwarts is great, of course, but it's hard not to miss the little pleasures I used to have back home. The smell of home cooked meals, playing soccer and even the non magic homework. I come back into reality, when I hear Maggie moving. Was she leaving, or going to sit down?

“I’m not really a particularly avid reader, any suggestions for good books?” Zoe asked. Maggie let out a little excited shriek. She loved books and what she loved even more was talking about them. “Uh, yeah!” A huge smile was on Maggie’s face. “Wanna sit down?” Zoe asked and sat down by a table. Maggie copied her actions.
She opened her mouth to talk but noticed Zoe scraping the table with her nails. Maggie furrowed her eyebrows but decided to ignore it. She didn’t want to bother her new friend. “Okay so, my favorite book is ‘Nevermoor’. It is an muggle book though. I haven’t really had the chance to read books from non-muggles yet. When I do and find some good ones I’ll tell you.” Maggie wanted to know more about Zoe so she opened her mouth again. “So, what is it like at your home?” She smiled. The word ‘home’ made her heart sting. She missed her family a lot. Maggie had written a letter to both her parents and her best friend but none of them had replied yet. It wasn’t weird. They had their own problems to handle and Maggie respected that. Well she tried her best respect it but she was honestly really mad. She needed someone to talk to about her problems and experiences. And when her only family didn't answer her, who would?

Hey, that's mine!
When I noticed Maggie's eyes furrowing, I immediately stopped scratching the wood. I'm an idiot, I think. She probably spends a lot of time here, she'd hate it if I was damaging property here. I listened to her closely to make up for my foolish actions, and heard her talk about a book called Nevermoor. I'd like to say I recognized it, or at least it rang a bell, but again, I'm not much of a reader. "Cool, I'll check it out!"
"Home? Oh, uhh.." I stuttered a bit for some reason. I have no problem talking about home usually, but today just isn't my day, apparently. "Well, I live in Manchester, England. My family are all muggles, so they were all super excited when they found out I was a witch." What else can I say without making it too much for a first interaction? "What about you?" I kept a small smile on my face, without meaning to. I guess I was being loud, because the staff sent condescending looks my way. This is why I don't come to the library. Places with more commotion and excitement are more my speed, so I hope next time I meet a new potential friend, it isn't here.
Turning my attention back to Maggie, I wait expectantly for her response.

"Home? Oh, uhh.." Zoe stuttered. Maggie noticed and felt bad for making her nervous. "Well, I live in Manchester, England. My family are all muggles, so they were all super excited when they found out I was a witch." Maggie makes an '0' with her mouth and nods slowly. "What about you?" Zoe asks with a little smile on her face. "I live in Helston with my parents. Unfortunately, I don't have any siblings but a best friend who is like a sister to me. My dad is a wizard but my mom's not. It's not exciting but I'm happy I guess."
Maggie looks out a window as she talks. Her eyes started burning and she realized she was tearing up. She missed her family dearly. "So..." She wanted to continue talking to the other girl but didn't know what to talk about. "I'm sorry, I don't know what to say." Maggie giggles nervously. She hoped Zoe would come up with something.
Maggie gasped. She suddenly remembered her homework laying untouched on her bed. "Zoe! I'm so so sorry, but i have to go. I just remembered that i didn't do my homework!" She hid her face in her hands. "Gosh i'm so stupid! That was the reason i went to the library in the first place - to do some research on the subject." Maggie felt dissapointed. She really wanted to continue chatting with Zoe.
