Jordyn couldn’t believe that almost an entire month had gone by since she’d arrived at Hogwarts! So many things had happened that she wanted to share with her mum. Of course, she wanted to share her experiences with her dad too but he was a wizard so this wasn’t new to him the way it was for her and her mum. A part of her felt guilty for not writing sooner but she knew they’d understand. She was still taking everything in and only now had she processed enough of it that she was sure she could write a coherent letter home. Any sooner and she’d have written a dozen pages of rambling.
Early Saturday morning, she quietly slipped down to the common room with her favorite quill and a little over a foot of parchment and got to work. From the ride there to the upcoming ball, Jordyn spared her mother no detail. She told her about her grades so far, the really good ones and the really average ones, which classes and professors she liked the best and which classes she’d have liked to avoid (basically, none). She’d written so much that before she knew it, she only had a couple of inches of parchment left. Well… maybe she could save the rest for the next letter.
After carefully folding and sealing her letter, she grabbed her winter cloak, slipped her letter in her pocket and headed towards the owlery. She didn’t have an owl of her own but she knew there were plenty of school owls to choose from. On her way there, she felt like a real castle pro! Not once had the stairs tripped her up by leaving her stuck on a platform or worse, shifting mid-staircase in midair.
She bounded outside and nearly shot off to the owlery like a bullet. Up and up the stairs until the owl droppings told her she was closing in on the top. “Made it!” she announced proudly, her breathing a little ragged. She took a few seconds to catch her breath and once she had, she realized she wasn’t there alone. “Oh.. I.. um… hello! I didn’t realize anyone else would be up so early.”

My alarm rang, signaling that it was 6:30 a.m., the time I usually woke up whenever it was a weekend. Like usual, I took a shower, had my magic tooth brush my teeth for me whilst drying and combing my hair, put on my slippers and my Robe of Warmth, got out my Quill, some ink, and three pieces of parchment, and went down the rope ladder before sitting down on a bar stool at the sports bar that was in my dormitory. I then set down my quill before placing a piece of parchment and a bottle of ink in front of it. I took the cap off of the ink bottle and dipped my quill into it before starting to write, dipping my quill into the ink bottle every once in a while.Dave - #fff79e

When I was finished, the piece of parchment looked like this:
I then swapped the finished parchment out for a blank piece and wrote the exact same thing, only with Kim Aoki’s name placed in there. And after that was done, I switched out the parchment for the last one that was blank and wrote the same letter but with Quinn Root written instead of Kim Aoki. Once I had finished writing the final letter,, I went upstairs before opening one of my bigger suitcases and taking out a three envelopes, one for each of the letters I had written. Then I closed the suitcase and climbed back down the rope ladder before starting to put the letters into the envelopes. I did this by taking a piece of parchment, looking at the name that was on it, writing the name down on the envelope, folding the piece of parchment, putting it into the envelope, and finally sealing the envelope. Once I had finished placing all the pieces of parchment into the envelopes, I closed the opening on my ink bottle and took it and my quill upstairs where I placed it into my smaller suitcase which contained everything I would need for my classes. I then went down the rope ladder, and noticed that a few of my other dorm mates had already woken up. Some were at the sports bar feeding on snacks, one was at the sports bar reading, and a few were playing at the tables either playing Wizards Chess, or Exploding Snap. When I was finished looking around, I picked up my envelopes and went to the Owlery where I’d use the school owls to send the letters to the members of the 1v1 Dueling Club.
Hello Colin McCoire,
Before I begin the rest of the letter, I apologize for the late reply to your sign-up form. Now I would also like to thank you for joining my 1v1 dueling club. As you have already read, the first season for the club starts on October the 1st. This happens to be a Saturday, just like today, and as so, takes place exactly one week from now. On this Saturday, the whole club (which I hope will grow in number during the upcoming week), should be gathering in class room 206 located on the second floor at 9:00 a.m. This is where we will discuss the upcoming duels for the month and this is where you will get to choose who you get to duel in your next duel. We will also arrange the duels so that they would fit my schedule, as well as that of those participating in the duels.
-Have a good day,
Dave
I went outside the common right and took a right turn down the steps, from where I took a left, a right, went over to the bridge connecting me to the tower the Owlery was in, went across it, entered the tower, took a left, climbed up the stairs until I reached the third floor, walked around it until I reached some stairs and climbed those until I reached the Owlery at which point I started taking the owls one by one and attaching the envelopes to them. I was almost finished with my task and was attaching the last envelope to an owls ankle before someone came in and exclaimed “Made it!” I could tell by the voice that it was a girl even though she was panting. I turned around to look at her before turning back to finish sending my last owl. It didn’t take her long for the girl to realize that she wasn’t alone as she soon said “Oh.. I.. um… hello! I didn’t realize anyone else would be up so early.” Once I had sent the last owl away, I turned around for the second time before starting to walk around the room saying “You didn’t? Wait, you’re one of the first years from the sorting ceremony, aren’t you? I mean, in that case, no wonder you realize. Back in my dorm, a few guys were already up by the time I left to come here. Of course, a lot of them were sleeping in since it’s the weekend, but there were a few of us that woke up early. Anyways, would I be correct to assume that you’re here to send a letter?” I looked down at her hands but didn’t see anything so I would let her to answer the question, but just before I could give her the chance, I quickly introduced myself by saying “Oh, and by the way, my name is David Logan Howard. I’m a second year Hufflepuff so I already know quite a bit about Hogwarts, but that’s about it.”

She nodded at his question. She was indeed a first year. She must have said something that made it easy to tell which made her blush slightly. Had her lack of Hogwarts experience shown itself? “Oh, well yeah. Now that you mention it. There were a few students up, using the library.” She didn’t specify which library she was talking about. She even wasn’t sure the main school library was open yet and since she’d never been in any other common but Ravenclaw’s, she assumed the other three common rooms had their own library as well. But as far as leaving the castle this early, if you didn’t have to, why would you? She knew if she hadn’t been sending the letter to her mother, she’d have been in the commons, snuggled by the fire with a book or one of her dorm mates' cats.
“RIGHT! The letter!” How quickly she’d forgotten why she’d come up there. She dug down into her robe pockets for the letter she’d written her mother. “Do you have any owl recommendations? A second year said to be careful about which owls I choose. She said sent home a letter on Halloween and by the time she’d arrived home for the holidays, she’d beat it by a day.” Unbeknownst to Jordyn, the second year had been exaggerating. Most owls didn’t take that long. Still, the owlery wasn’t the post office so there wasn't as large a variety and much like the school brooms, the owls weren’t exactly impressive. This didn’t bother Jordyn though. She was impressed just seeing so many of them in one place. Mostly barn owls, their plumage ranged from muted browns to fiery bronzes to dull grays to a mix of all three. Many if not all of them were snoozing peacefully, a quiet, drawn out “hooo” escaping a few ever so often. How she’d have loved her own owl.
“Hello, David. I’m Jordyn Fletcher but you can call me Jordyn.” She didn’t mention that she didn’t know much about the castle. That was a given. She had managed to do some exploring here and there but didn’t feel the need to mention it. It wasn’t like she’d stumbled across the Room of Requirement.
“Oh no!” Jordyn had been searching her pockets and over and over again, the inner ones, the outer ones and then the inner ones again. She was certain she’d put the letter in her pocket but it wasn’t there anymore. “I lost it! I lost the letter I wrote home.” She spun around, searching the steps then bounded halfway down them, realized she was being rude and bounded back up.
“Um… I’m sorry. I know we just met and this isn’t your problem but… would you mind helping me search? If you’re done sending yours off, that is. I don’t want to bother you. I know it can’t be far. I came here straight from the common room…” She trailed off, talking more to herself now than him. David wasn’t obligated to go out of his way but she’d have appreciated a second pair of eyes.

The girl didn’t introduce herself to me right away, but instead, responded to what I said bit by bit like I did sometimes. She started out by saying ”Oh, well yeah. Now that you mention it, there were a few students up, using the library.” The library? As far as I was aware, the library was closed at the moment, but if the girl was speaking the truth then she must’ve been talking about a library that I hadn’t been made aware of during my time at Hogwarts. She then continued by saying “RIGHT! The letter! Do you have any owl recommendations? A second year said to be careful about which owls I choose. She said she sent home a letter on Halloween and by the time she’d arrived home for the holidays, she’d beat it by a day.” Well, there weren’t any owls that were that slow as far as I knew because every owl I had used managed to deliver my letters home in less then a day as far as I was concerned. “Well, I don’t exactly have a preference when using owls as they usually return with a letter in two days whenever I send a letter home, although times vary depending on how fast my family writes a letter back although in some cases it’s multiple letters when my siblings decided to write me a separate one although now one of them goes here now so I get to talk to him on a weekly basis.”Dave - #fff79e

After I had said that, the girl had finally decided to introduce herself as Jordyn Fletcher. As she did so, she began searching her pockets, likely for the letter she had brought here, but apparently she didn’t find it because moments later, she said “Oh no! I lost it! I lost the letter I wrote home.” Jordyn then turned around and looked at the steps behind her before going away to look for her letter. Thinking that the conversation was over, I started towards the steps too, only to find Jordyn rushing back and into the Owlery, almost bumping into be as she said “Um… I’m sorry. I know we just met and this isn’t your problem but… would you mind helping me search? If you’re done sending yours off, that is. I don’t want to bother you. I know it can’t be far. I came here straight from the common room…”. Well, I certainly had the time to help Jordyn find her letter and I knew that if I was in her situation, I would’ve wanted the help of another person so I decided to help the girl. “Alright then, I’ll help you search for your letter. Could you just tell me where your house’s common room is? It’d be really helpful in finding your letter.”

“Really? Just two days?” Not that it was any of her business but she wondered if David lived fairly close to Hogwarts. Owls didn’t fly very fast and even after a short journey, needed time to rest. Her home in Southampton would have taken at least a day one way, a rest day and depending on how fast her parents responded, another two days before it returned. Less than a week but longer than two days. And then there was the speed of the owl itself to consider as well as weather conditions, wind patterns, grabbing a meal of mice or frogs along the way… Jordyn was overthinking now. Something she generally didn’t realize she was doing until the overthinking consumed enough of the time to create an awkward silence.
“Sorry… lost in thought. Oh really? I actually don’t have any siblings. Are they older or younger than you? How many do you have? Do you get along or fight a lot?” Just as quickly as she’d brought up the owls, she’d forgotten them. Now she was curious about David’s home life. She’d always wanted a little brother or sister but her parents, for grown up reasons they didn’t intend on sharing with her just yet, weren’t able to give her one. It took no time for her to start over thinking again. This time, about how much less lonely she may have been growing up if she’d had a brother or sister to talk to or fight with.
She’d gotten so drawn into her thoughts that she nearly agreed to tell David where the common room was. “Sur–...um...” she stuttered, just short of house treachery. At the bottom of the Owlery staircase and gazed at David skeptically. “You… you aren’t trying to trick me are you?” He hadn’t seemed like he was but she knew, like she was sure he did, that students outside of a certain house weren’t allowed in that house’s common room. If he was trying to trick her, he wouldn’t have been the first since her arrival there. She supposed her entire first year would be filled with older students trying to steer her wrong. David wasn’t allowed in the Ravenclaw tower anymore than Jordyn was allowed in the Hufflepuff basements. It really made her wonder…
