[Backdated by a week cause I'm a busy gal, 26/9/2022]

The school was buzzing. Between the Hexwizard Tournament, the visiting schools and the Fall Ball, there wasn't a moment of peace. Beatrice had been messaging home since the start of term and whispers that a ball would be coming had begun. They couldn't go into Hogsmeade to buy any new clothing and so she'd owled her Ma and Nan about it. Her Ma had sent magazine after magazine of dresses, the final one coming today. Hopefully with luck, she'd find one that fit the theme and she was happy with, if not loved.

Bea was buzzing with excitement. She'd told her friends about them, and they had decided to meet to pour over them. Coming into the courtyard, the designated meeting point, she surveyed the area and coming up empty. No friends in sight, although there were plenty of other students milling around. Finding an empty stone bench, Bea sat, deciding it was better to sit and wait for the others to join. She bit her lip as the excitement and adrenaline came down. How would her friends go meeting? Although they all were second years and surely had classes together, Bea didn't think they had all met properly. They were all lovely and kind people though, so Bea was sure that they would get along. Pouring over magazines didn't hurt either.

A rare feeling for a more so occasion, Skraele is nervous. Not for meeting a friend of a friend; any friend of Bea's is sure to be a good person. The preconception, though probably flawed, takes a smidgen of the fun from meeting someone new. She might have even met this person once, but she's terrible with names. Just as well for the badger girl is a little tense for wholly other reasons.

The Fall Ball. Sure, it's an exciting prospect, but it's juxtaposed familiar and foreign nature strikes her strangely. Her tiny family had never dressed up, much, for anything and then only little better than casual clothes. Nan and Daideo, and by extension she, are just too casual in all things. Picking out a presentable dress, socializing and dancing formally, and, well, whatever else one might expect from such, the wild child just can't wrap her head around the ideas. She has to wonder too how magic interplays with everything.

Amongst her ruminations, she suddenly finds herself in the courtyard with no memory of the walk between. Shocked out of her devolving reverie, she spots the curlicued ravenclaw, amidst magazines, almost immediately. Oblivious to the other witches and wizards, she, green eyes crinkling and twinkling with excitement, skips over and plops onto the bench next to her friend. "Bea! Heyyy! Ha-ware-ya?" Though she'd worked hard to please her nan by adopting proper speech, summer events had led to a decline in that practice.

It seemed this time, with the ball so close, Ma had sent magazine after magazine. Possibly because she knew the girls friends would look at them too? Although, between classes Bea hadn't really had as much time to hang out with her friends. Only classes and the occasional dinner had made up friend time. The young girl had spent the rest of the time in her common room, doing homework. She had been grateful for the ball, a big fun event that she could get dressed up for and participate with her friends.

Shifting through the magazines, she had become so engrossed in them, that she jumped slightly when her puff friend came upon her. Hand to her heart, she let out an exclamation. "Ooch! Ye gave me a fright!" As she settled, she smiled at Skraele's speech. It seemed as Bea's was improving, much to her mothers delight, her friends had gone the opposite way. Not that she minded. It was still easy enough for the Scots girl to understand. "Good! Ma gave me these magazines for the Ball! Look!" As she flipped though the sheaf's of glossy paper, she looked up again, her cheeks reddening as she forgot her manners. "How are ye?"

The impish redhead snickers having startled her friend; though never intentional, she sometimes has and too often enjoys that effect. Still giving a badger grin, "S'rry! I'll try ta be quiet next time!" A self-amused breath escapes. The coastal, Skraele had done a little research, farmgirl's accent had improved impressively, but the imp doesn't notice, never having trouble before understanding her friend's speech. She settles down, quickly aided by the presentation of publications.

She glances down with a quirk of her brow then up quickly. "I'm much better, thank ya!" The response is automatic and a little canned. On reflection, she can't remember if she's told Bea about her Summer, so many had she told already. She looks at the magazine as commanded and its beguiling beauties. "Summer didn' go at all as planned, did it? Busy for everyone, like."

She picks up a magazine and slowly spins the pages over like a deck of cards. "Any idea what ya're lookin' for... or who ya're goin' wit'?" Freckles crinkling slightly, she hadn't intended to jump straight to the point, though circumstances bring the unpleasant questions to the fore. She overbites lips and lets the magazine fall open in her hands. Ginger brows swivel up dragging her eyes to catch Bea's reaction to the question.

Coming down the courtyard, Kiwi perched on her shoulder, Monica walked with nearly a skip to her step. She had remembered the events of the last ball, and due to the unfortunate reality that she was laking in the friend department, her time was less than ideal. But this year was going to be different.

Taking advantage of the relationship that grew over the summer break, she dove in to prepose to her new friend Bea about going to the ball together, and to her surprise, not only did Bea agree, but another friend was joining them as well.

As she neared the meeting spot, the reality of meeting a new person smacked her in the face... What if she didn't get along with this girl? Or what if she was that awkward 3rd friend in the group that is just shadowing more than really apart of the unit? Well there was no sense dwelling on questions she didn't have answers to. She could hear the sharing of introductions beginning in the distance, of course Monica was late, when was she ever really on time for things. Luckily though it didn't seem like she missed too much yet.

"Alright Kiwi, you and me.... we're in this together." She stroked the small rodents head as she whispered softly in it's ear. Taking a breath she approached the bench.

"Beatrice! Hey sorry I'm a bit late, hope I didn't miss to much of the planning yet!" Monica smiled and with not really knowing what to do, she held out her hand for a handshake...."Wow that was dumb."
Then turning her attention to the other girl, "Hello, my name is Monica, Evans. It's nice to meet you!" She moved her hand over to great the fellow student, before joining them on the bench.

"So have you guys talked about what you're wearing yet? I have only been to the one last year and just wore my robe, not knowing what else to do."

Bea let out a grin as her friend said she would be quiet. Not likely. "You? Quiet? No!" Smoothing her hand over the glossy page it had found itself on, Bea scrunched her eyebrows at Skraele's next response. It seemed forced, and although they were already a month into term, it was slightly weird that her friend answered that way. Bea nodded though in answer, thinking back to her own Summer. Between Hilda coming over for a week and the potion event with Hunter, Bea hadn't had time to blink. And that was before the International Summer Camp! Maybe her and Michael missing out on the farm stay was what she meant? Bea was determined to get to the bottom of it, but maybe in a more private setting? When her friend wasn't meeting her other friend? It seemed a little to private to be talking about in the middle of the courtyard.

Looking back down at the magazines, Bea grinned. "I want something green! With flowers. It's fairytale themed right? So, I was thinkin' something flowery. Maybe with swans, or feathers. I don't know fully yet. What about you?" At the second part of the question, she bit her lip. "Uhh, that's where today comes in I guess? Me and Monica are going together as friends, and I was wondering if you wanted to join us? We'd all go together and have fun!" It would be better than the last ball. First year she hadn't known anyone going, and so Bea had sought out the more quiet activities and her dorm for comfort instead. This year she was determined to have fun, and bring her friends along with her.

In the distance nearing them, Bea could see Monica. And Kiwi, the girls pet rat. Beatrice smiled. Just on time. "Monica! Hi, come sit!" She could see the other girl was nervous, evidently from the handshake she issued Bea. To which Bea respinded with a quizzical look and a quick hug. "Nothing much. My dress ideas really. I was just tellin' Skraele that we should all go to the ball together as a big group of friends." With all the excitement and moving, a sliding sound could be heard. Bea turned with a slight horror, to find the piled magazines come crashing down to the ground, numerous of the zines flying open to land on random pages. Bea cringed at the image. Could this get any worse?!

Not sure if Bea's dress idea was ironic or obvious, Skraele happens to have the same idea, though probably with a different bent. Before she can say as much or reply with an assured affirmative to the latter question, the third girl in question shows. At first it seems she's mumbling to herself, but an overly curious gaze spies the rodent in the veil of ostentatious hair, at which point she's not sure which is more exciting. Not even realizing she'd stood up, she shakes Monica's hand perhaps too vigorously, unaware of the Slytherin's potential reservations; the Hufflepuff assumes a friend of Bea's is as kindly as the rest. "Monica! Skraele! So good ta meet ya! Though, technically w'have already, like." She gives a large, bright smile.

That is until a sudden commotion distracts wandering eyes, magazines flipping and flopping everywhere. Skraele can't help but giggle at the mess, but she's quick to help clean up. Thus, she's treated to a wide variety of designs all at once. "Oh, hey, where d'ya find all these things anyway? They magic dresses or what?" The question doesn't seem at all silly to her given the situation. She turns mid task to Monica, "Monica, got a nickname? Have ya thought about what ya're goin'ta where?" Skraele finds her eyes darting from mouse to cerulean hair again and back.

Monica smiled at Skraele, her face beaming a little, "Oh you are right, I am sorry I am the worst with names and faces, but it is nice to meet you again." Monica listened to Bea give the low down of what conversation Monica had missed, just as a gust of breeze swept by the group of girls, knocking the magazines to the ground in a grand display of dresses, and accessories littering every page as they turned about on the ground. Monica was quick to help tame the wild pages, making them a nice stack, but also taking the chance to glance at some of the options in the open covers. Her eyes fell on a black dress with a corset top.

After collecting the magazines back up, Monica turned too Skraele after being asked about a nickname. It was an interesting request, one that Monica never really considered. If she had been called a nickname, it seemed to more come naturally from a person, not one that she ever requested for. She smiled though, remembering back to summer camp, when she bumped into Hiro, a student form a fellow wizarding school, Nica, he called her. She snapped out of her thoughts, putting the pile of magazines she collected back on the bench, "Well, my family sometimes calls me Moni, but other than that... not really anything that has really stuck so far."
She strocked her forearm with her thumb, wondering if Hiro was going to be at the ball, if he would be interested in maybe dancing with her.
"What about you though, any nicknames?" She thought for a moment turning to Bea, "Never was something I asked you either, do you prefer to be called Beatrice, or do you go by Bea, or another nickname?"
Taking her attention back to the task at hand, picking out dresses, Monica began to search through the pile of magazines to find the one that showcased the black dress that caught her eye. Flipping through page after page, only getting distracted slightly by other dresses catching her gaze, but none quite like that black one. Finally, flipping through her third cover, she found that familiar dress. She turned to the girls, holding it up for them to see. "This one caught my eye, what do you guys think?"

Bea's heart was ecstatic! Her friends were getting along, quite well it seemed. For that Bea was grateful. Crouching to gather the magazines, she thought about both the girls questions. She hadn't really thought of answers to any of them before now. The dresses was easy enough. "My Ma and I go to London with me Granny. She's muggle, and knows all the best places. Otherwise, if there's nothing there, Diagon Alley." Ellon, her hometown, had quite a few shops so most of the time the girl went there for clothing, but this was special. Ma had said so, and that called for something special to be worn. Granny was amazing with clothes and knew all the best places and so she would be called to help.

Picking up the unused magazines, Bea made sure they were in neat piles, albeit shorter than before, then sat on the seat again. Picking up one of the magazines, she flipped through it, trying to find something that grabbed her. "I usually get called Bea. My parents call me Beatrice, but usually people like te short'n it. Call me whatever though. 'm not fussed." Just as she finished that sentence, she grinned, flipping the zine around to show both the girls. "What about this one? It's so pretty!" It was knee-length, with green lace and tulle creating a vintage effect that would be perfect for the fairytale aesthetic. Dog earring the page, Bea made sure to send this one back to Ma, questions already swimming inside her head the gorgeous creation.

Even if Skraele's grandparents had the means, they would probably never buy the rowdy girl something as nice as is on display under any other circumstance. With this thought in mind, she scans through magazines on the lower end of the spectrum proffered. Even with this limitation, the task still proves difficult. Even if it's just a dress, she gravitates towards things with meaning, not just anything would suffice regardless how pretty.

She glances over as the girls offer up their favorites for judgement. She wets the corner of her lip and grins with amusement. Those're g'rgeous and perfect for ya's! Very fittin' and complimentary! Speakin' of fittin', is there some kinda magic ta get them sized or do we have ta do measurements ourselves, like?" Both brows rise with thoughtful curiousity. The questions seems a little silly, still she isn't sure.

She turns back to the magazines and renews her efforts to find something. It had seemed so easy for the others, but, half distracted, her eye catches something, and she has to flip back several pages. She doesn't have to look any further; the grass isn't always greener, especially in this case. She flips around a moss green, lace and crochet dress with various designs that blended into each other as much as they would a woodland background. "Ohhh, whadja think? Has fae vibes, like a nymph or dryad!" She is almost buzzing with the prospects. Surely it fits the theme even if it doesn't call to a particular tale.
