Metanoia

Dated: April 8th, 2022
After he had eaten a light and healthy meal for his dinner at the Slytherin table, Flash would get up and move to the Ravenclaw table as most of the students had either already gone, or were also staying behind or eating slowly so they could spend more time with their friends. Flash was reminded time and again not to trust the food and drink at Hogwarts, but he saw little other option but to do so. Taking up one of the ever-filling pots of tea, he would set it and himself down across from Sylvain, looking like he belonged.
"Good afternoon, love." He would say casually, adjusting his robe to be comfortable on the seat. "Here we are, two warriors on the eve of another battle."
Flash would pour a cup for both of them, holding his up to him, clearly for a toast. There was a raging storm outside pelting the distant windows, occasionally lighting them up with bright lightning. "To good weather."
Whether Syl did a precise toast or followed his own music, Flash would put the cup back down, as it would be too hot to drink right away. As the day wore on, he was becoming more tired, but the caffeine in the tea would be sure to perk him up enough for a conversation he was looking forward to. Quidditch was one of the only things that remained normal after the curse, and the same could be said for his friendship with Syl.
"How do you feel? Excited, cocky?" Flash would lean on one of his hands for support, a sleepy smile on his face. "If you win, you might be going on to the summer finals."
There was chatter around them, and the warm glow of candles above them. The room was warm with the bodies of people, yet no longer as loud. Many, Flash included, were excited about the Easter Holiday on the horizon. Most didn't linger, and instead left to pack and get ready. Most of the Quidditch players who knew best would be turning in early for what would be the decisive final game of the year. Flash of course would not be sleeping well, but that was a given. He had resigned to his fate, glad to have moments like this that he could still treasure before it was all taken away from him.

Metanoia
Stuffing his face with whichever pastry was closest, Sylvain had recently begun eating an almost alarming quantity of food these days. If it weren't for the fact that he was a growing boy, then it most certainly would have raised the question "how'd you learn to vanish all that?" What was this anyway, his third danish? Carb-loading, all those muggle warnings and signs for diabetes suddenly dawned on him a little bit clearer. Luckily, as Flash came closer, Sylvain was able to drown the danish down with pumpkin juice.
Looking quite like a quidditch captain, Sylvain held his helmet in his lap and had his hand out to dap Flash as he got closer, something he himself had only recently learned counted as friendly greetings. Faster without words was a boon. "Yes," he said in a teasing tone. "Warriors," He played using air quotes, but he knew what Flash was getting at, and he could hardly say he felt much different. Joking like this was a way of coping with the nerves but there was a very real and tangible rush that came after each victory, and Sylvain was right on the edge of having it all for a whole summer.
"To clearer skies," toasted Sylvain. It was something his uncle had said once. "and to closer calls from the refs." The second half of the saying was the joke part. His chuckle would then wash the rest of his cup, now seemingly empty, but his heart knew well enough that his stomach was full. With a little burp, he put his free hand on Flash's back as if to support him against terrible news. "If I win? I think you mean when I win. We've already calculated our odds of success against last year's tactics. There's no way we lose. Hufflepuff is as good as..." but he caught himself before he spoke the word. Dead. That word had too serious a meaning these days to joke about anymore.
"Well we're favored to win anyways, so I won't bore you any further." He gave his friend a keen looking over, something he had begun to do more of these days. “How about you, still holding up alright? And you better not just say “I’m fine.” I mean it, Flash.” While hanging around Flash’s shoulder, he waggled his finger like a wand between their faces as if casting a terrible curse. “I’ll put a hex on you if you don’t tell me the truth.”

Metanoia
As usual, Flash would be amused and even charmed by Syl's candor and nervous witticisms. With the patter of rain and the soft glow of candle light above them, the cozy atmosphere and later hour would make it easy to stay tired. Regardless of his wakefulness, he would laugh and light up as Syl made some strange hand gesture in greeting, and insisted his team were doubtlessly winning. He would not consider it hubris, given how well the eagles were performing this year. He was not wrong that they were favored to win, and Flash was certain that if Dan were sitting at this table instead of him, he would not be acting so cordially. The absolute devastation of their ranks and brooms at the start of the year had rattled the snakes, giving them a run for everything they were worth. They would certainly not be underestimating them the next time they were in the sky together.
Though one arm held up his heavy head, the other one tapped its fingers along the rim of the teacup, steam rolling through the gaps as he waited for the heat to be drinkable. In the swift current of Syl's running thoughts, the topic switched to Flash's well being, which would cause him to involuntarily stop slouching so much. Flash did not generally like talking about himself, but since Sylvain knew him so well, he was able to pepper his language with humor, which made the concept slightly less foreboding. "Okay. Please don't hex me."
Though a smile would play on his lips, Flash's multicolored eyes would wander, wondering how to put his feelings into words succinctly. "I think I am managing alright. I haven't been able to have a decent night's rest in a long time, so lately I am always tired." Flash would scratch at the back of his head, an act of both relieving some tension there and of granting him a moment longer to think. "But I have been looking forward to this ritual of ours, as well as the game coming up, so I can say I'm feeling better than usual."
Whether Syl responded directly to this or if there was a quiet pause in the conversation, Flash's eyes would be drawn to the surface of his black tea, reflections shimmering in-between the specks of light. Syl was a very honest person, which contrasted greatly with Flash's own pattern of conversation. He struggled to open up to anyone, but fitfully Syl always seemed to manage it in the end. It was not entirely without discomfort, but he could tell it was worth the effort. "I just have to deal with it... it's very frustrating. Nothing I tried helped, so I'm stuck. I'm just trying to enjoy what's enjoyable instead of lingering on what isn't going well."
