I Can't Forgive Her
@Keith Moore
~~~
Dove sat in the Owlery, scratching an owl on the head. Besides having a reason to be there, she simply liked being there! To think, draw, or even write. And did Dove have a lot to think about!
Her father had told her that he had good news for her. That was good, right? It was great?
Well, her father decided not to tell her what the good news is. He told her that she'd just find out eventually. So here was her reason for being here! She figured that if there was news that she was to receive, it'd be written to her. And right she was! She took the letter from the owl's beak, then opened it to a greeting of a messy scrawl;
My dearest sister, Dove,
Dove set the letter on the ledge of the window, next to where she was sitting on the ledge. Sister? Was this a letter from Judith? It couldn't have been Judith. She had abandoned everyone years ago. She'd left Dove! She didn't even say goodbye...
But she deserved a chance. Dove picked up the letter again.
It's me, your older sister. I doubt that you remember me. You're old enough to be in Hogwarts now, and here I was leaving when you were barely a toddler! Anyways, Dad must have told you the news. I'll be home to see you for Winter break! And I'm staying home. For real this time.
I admit that in the past, I made a horrible decision by running away. I hate myself every day for what I did to you and Mother. But you need to believe me, it was Father who made me leave. It was never my fault, Dove! And just know, I hope you can forgive me, but it's your own fault if you choose not to.
-Your sister, Judith Peregrine.
NO.
NO NO NO NO NO.
Judith couldn't be back! She was what, twenty now?! Dove could never accept her back. So, with that, she snatched the letter off the window's crooked edge, and made a tear in the side of it, which turned into a huge rip, turning the letter into two halves.
Rrrrip.
"That's for abandoning me!"
Dove didn't know why she was talking to a piece of paper. But... It felt good. She picked up the two halves and placed them on top of each other.
Rrrip.
"That's for tearing me apart!"
Rrip.
"That's for destroying Mother inside!"
"That's for damaging our family!"
"That's for feeling sorry for yourself!"
RRRRRIP!!
The last one she could manage, as the paper was probably in over a hundred pieces now.
"...And that's for blaming Father."
With that, Dove threw herself against the wall, sat down, buried her face in her knees and began to cry.
I Can't Forgive Her
Keith woke up to an owl pecking at his arm. It had a letter from his parents.
Keith walked in and saw a girl yelling, and tearing a piece of parchment. "Must of been a bad letter..." He mumbled to himself. He waited until she was done yelling to say something, but when he went to talk she fell and started to cry.
Keith walked over, he had tears in his eyes, "Mind if I cry with you?" He said softly.
He read it over and over, "NO! NO! NONONO!!!!!!!! WHY?" Keith thought. "Why her? Why my little Carla, why my sister?" Keith said, not meaning to talk out loud. He threw on his black hoodie and walked to the Owlery.Dear son,
We are sorry to inform you, but your sister is gone. She died two days ago, she was hit by a car. I was too late to save her, the doctors say she died quickly. I'm sorry you had to hear it like this. We miss you. Please be careful, write back soon. Your aunt said you had to tell us something, she wrote to us the other day. Please let us know how you like Hogwarts. We will hear from the professors tomorrow, telling us things, how your doing in classes, who your hanging out with. Write back!
~Your Mother and Father
Dove lifted her head to look at the person talking. It was a boy. Looked about her age, and he was dressed in Gryffindor robes. "Uh... Do what-...whatever you want." She moved over a bit so the boy could sit next to her. Though the letter was ripped up, parts of it were still visible:
Coming home...
Dad made me leave...
Your fault.
Dove sniffed, looking at the boy who was now sitting next to her. "Are you alright? What happened to you?" She wiped her tears, but it was pretty much useless as tears were uncontrollably streaming down her face. "I-... I hope it wasn't too b-bad." Dove shook her head. Why was she crying?! She should be happy, right?! Her beloved sister... Her favorite family member! She had missed her. She had wanted her back, she had cried for weeks!
But now she was coming back, and Dove was upset?
So indecisive.
But, in an effort to cheer up the boy next to her, and maybe herself, she forced a smile towards him. "You know, it's nice to have someone to at least sit next to." She couldn't force a smile much longer, but instead of showing that she was upset, she quickly buried her face in her knees again.
Keith sat beside the girl, she had tears running down her face as well. "Well, I don't want to talk about my reason for crying just yet, do you want to tell me why your crying?
Keith tried to stop crying, but failed. "Why did my sister have to die? Why Carla? She was so innocent. WHYYYYYYY?!" Keith started crying even harder, he wanted to scream, yell, he felt as though he would explode.
Keith continued weeping, "I don't normally cry in front of people, so this is new. I- um... Well, I got a letter, F-from home. M-M-My" He started violently crying, shaking. He never got to say bye to his sister. He brought his knees up to his chest, burying his face in them.
He stayed like that for a while, barely moving. He eventually ran out of tears, that's when he brought his face up, and turned to the girl. "My little sister was hit by a muggle car, and died." He said, looking away. He couldn't think of anything else except the last time he had seen his little sister, which had been two weeks before coming to Hogwarts.
Keith looked at her, "You're right, it is nice to have someone here, although I feel like screaming, I'm glad someone is here with me."
She nodded once she brought her head back up. "Yeah... Um, my sister, well..." She sighed. "A couple years ago she left home.. I think she said it was because she didn't want to attend Hogwarts? Anyways, um, she's coming back. I don't know why I-I'm crying! I sh-should be..." She looked away.
Then he told her that his sister had died?! She looked at him again. "Oh my god. I'm sorry, that's horrible." She put a hand on his shoulder. "I'm so sorry... I couldn't imagine losing a family member!" Dove stared at him, dumbfounded. "You know, uh... I really am glad that you're here." She paused. Was that weird? "Well, you know. I'm not happy about what happened to you. That's terrible. But I'm glad that we were able to meet, and stuff." She looked away. Dove didn't know what to do in this situation. A boy just told her that his sister had been hit by a car; and she felt horrible. If she could, she'd bring his sister back, she'd make it so her sister didn't come back. She'd make it so neither of them were crying.
But they were, and magic couldn't fix any of it.
I Can't Forgive Her
Keith slowly turned to look at the girl, as she explained why she was crying. "Her sister is home, that's good, or it should be, maybe I'm not hearing the whole story."
Keith smiled threw his tears, "Sometimes there is no explanation for things, they just happen. My aunt always said that, when there was no explanation for something."
He looked back down, the girl responding to his reason for crying. The girl continued on, saying she was happy he was here, then saying she wasn't happy about why, but was glad he was here. He wiped his face, now that he was crying less. He turned to look at her, but she was looking away. They sat there in silence for a while.
Keith finally couldn't take the silence. He opened his mouth, but words wouldn't come out. He thought, "What do I say? I should go get cleaned up... maybe she wants to come with? Should I ask? Ugh, I don't know what to do?" Keith stood up, still questioning life, but finally spoke. "I'm going to go clean up, then head to lunch, or outside, you can join me, if you want. I don't want to leave you here by yourself, but I need to wash up." Keith looked at the girl, waiting for a response.
I Can't Forgive Her
"Oh... Yeah, sure." Dove stood up, picking up the pieces of the letter to throw away. "I'm Columbia." She looked down at the letter's opening, shocking herself.
My dearest sister, Dove...
The signature alone made her not want to be Dove anymore. Everyone called her Dove, and she used to be fine with it. She used to hate being called Columbia! It was a long, stupid, extra name. It was her real name. She'd forget eventually. She'd tell Keith eventually. But for today, she wasn't Dove, and she didn't have a sister. She didn't have a father, or a mother, or any family. For now, it was just her and this boy talking, trying to make each other feel better.
"Yeah, uh... We can go to the Grounds and just... talk... I guess."
She managed a smile, then motioned for him to follow her. "Let's go, then." On the way there, she looked at him. "Let me explain about my sister... Well-"
She cut herself off, sighing. Did she really want to explain right now?
"Short version, um... She ran away when I was two, and didn't even leave any notes or say goodbye or... Why didn't she say goodbye?! She should have said goodbye!" She looked away. "Nevermind."
I Can't Forgive Her
Keith stopped, "Columbia? I thought you said-" He paused, shaking his head, "Nevermind" he said, looking at the girl, she seemed to be in a different world for a moment, then back in this one, but lost in thought.
"The grounds? Okay... Um... I'm going to stop by a wash room on the way out of the castle to wash my face, if that's okay?" He asked, putting a hand on his neck, rubbing it, he felt a little embarrassed, "I really just had a full blown breakdown in front of her... I had a great reason to cry, but hopefully I can still seem strong."
Keith then heard the girl, whatever her name was, Dove, Columbia, she began telling him about her sister. She sounded mad, but upset at the same time. There was no happiness, not that he could see. "Two years old, does she remember her sister much then? I only remember maybe three things from when I was two. That's rough, it sounds like her sister just abandoned her."
Keith watched the girl as they walked, when he spotted a washroom, "I'm going to go wash up real quick, if you don't mind." Keith said, turning towards the girl.
