xxxxxxxxHogwarts summer camp. Circa 2022. Maggie was not all that into outdoors activities. Which was odd, considering that she had chosen to do summer camp. She had chosen it because she wanted to spend additional time with her best friend, honestly. June's family seemed very much like they liked their precious daughter to be home for weird pureblood stuff. Maggie didn't really know how pureblood families operated, but it wouldn't surprise her if they had all these weird rituals. Preparing to be totally against everyone who wasn't a pureblood 101. Being a massive jerk, part A.

Obviously, June didn't act that way. Maggie was infinitely grateful for it.

Even though Maggie adored being around people, drawing attention to herself, this was harder than anticipated. Constantly being in such close quarters with others and not having any escape, really, was not her forte. Not a strong point of Maggie's.

So here she was, sitting out on a grassy knoll, watching the stars climb up into the dimming sky. It was getting dark quick tonight, she'd noticed, despite it being just 7:30.

Maggie dropped her head to her knees, staring at the grass blades and picking them out with her hands, smelling the scent of dewy grass beneath her body. It was soaking through her shorts, just slightly, making the jean material stick to her skin.

Adelaide was the complete opposite of adventurous. She was very stick-in-the-mud, and was content in not participating in the majority of the games during summer camp. The only games she had actually signed herself up for was truth or dare and twirl the flagon, the latter not set to happen until near the end of summer camp. She also had the summer duel earlier in the month, but other than that her experience at summer camp hadn't been all that eventful. It wasn't as if it had been boring though, but most of the activities offered just weren't for her so she had found other ways to occupy her time.

For one, she had brought quite a lot of books with her and so had spent time reading, either inside her tent or outside soaking up the sun and she did always have her tentmates to talk to if she needed it. Though honestly, if the blonde was being completely honest, sometimes she just preferred her own company over other people. If she had to put a label on it she'd probably say she was an ambivert, leaning a lot more towards introvert, even though she did also enjoy talking to and hanging out with her friends and meeting new people wasn't always terrible, because even if she did get into arguments with a few people, there were always those people she got on great with. And she loved them a lot.

Although, tonight was one of those nights that Adelaide just wanted to be left to her own thoughts. So, she had slipped out of her tent and had simply just started to walk around the stadium. The blonde had no particular destination in mind, just wanting to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the slight chill breeze that accompanied the summer night after a long, hot day. It had already started to get dark, even though it was quite early, her wristwatch telling her that it was only 7:30pm, but she didn't really mind. It would be quite peaceful to watch the stars slowly appear in the sky for the night.

As she was walking, she noticed someone sat on a grassy knoll. She couldn't make out their face from here, but as she got closer she realized it was a girl she vaguely recognized from June's birthday. She's pretty sure her name was Maggie, if she recalled correctly. She doesn't know the girl that well, if at all, if she's being completely honest, but she seemed quite nice and would hopefully be some good company. Despite coming out here to be left on her own, she found herself wanting to go sit beside the girl. So she did.

"Hey," Adelaide spoke up softly, hoping to not startle the girl as she sat down cross-legged beside her, "Maggie, is it? I recognize you from June's birthday. I'm Adelaide," the blonde wasn't entirely sure if Maggie remembered her name, so she introduced herself to save the girl the embarrassment of having to ask in case she had forgotten. She turned her attention to the sky, staring at the stars that were slowly starting to make an appearance.

xxxxxxxxUnfortunately, it seemed as if everywhere that you went for a little peace and quiet here at Hogwarts was filled with someone who was facing their own things. Wanting to be alone in their own right. That was just great for Maggie.

Still, even when rudely interrupted, she was kind to others (or tried to be). Maybe this girl was having a positively rotten time and just needed a friend. Maybe she just wanted to sit next to another warm body and think about how summer camp was going, or rant about a bad day and bad experiences. Maggie didn't really know.

She did know who the girl was. Adelaide Barlowe, another student who had been in attendance at June's birthday party. Obviously Maggie remembered, it had been June! "Yeah. It's Maggie," she grinned at Adelaide. Looked a little down and out. Maybe she was just fine, but Maggie had no way of knowing that. Maybe she always had a dismal little look on her face that implied something had gone wrong. "Adelaide like lemonade?"

Maggie thought that lemonade was more fun than Adelaide. And maybe Adelaide was sour, too. Just like a lemon. Sour with a little bit of sweetness that broke through when you really worked it.

"Really, it's nice to meet you," Maggie craned her neck and looked up at the sky, squinting as stars began to peek through the dark washed sky. "Any reason you're down here? Or are you just bored?"

Adelaide's attention returned to Maggie, returning the girl's smile slightly before once again moving to stare at the stars. She absentmindedly picked at a patch of grass as her eyes skimmed all of the stars starting to arrive in the sky, looking to see if she could spot any constellations. "Hm?" She hummed at Maggie's words, wondering what she was trying to say with the lemonade comparison, and then she let out a huff of a laugh, "Are you trying to say I have a resting bitch face? Or that I'm sour?" She shook her head amusedly, "I suppose you aren't entirely wrong."

The number of enemies or generally negative relationships she gained in her first year was proof of that. Maybe she wasn't entirely sour, but there was definitely a part of her that was. Sour, rude, a bitch. Whatever way you would want to refer to it. It didn't really bother her, though, because it was just who she was. If not letting people walk all over you made you a bitch, then so be it. She broke herself out of her train of thought to reply to Maggie.

"It's nice to meet you too," she said. Part of her felt bad for interrupting Maggie's alone time, maybe the girl was annoyed at Adelaide for barging in unwelcomed, and Adelaide honestly didn't know why she felt the need to come over to Maggie anyway when she herself had wanted to be alone. But maybe two souls that wanted to be left alone were destined to find each other, to find solace in one another. To have the comforting warmth of another person beside you, even if you didn't want to talk.

She shrugged in response to Maggie's question, "Just wanted to be left alone, I guess. Everything," she gestured around her vaguely, "can get a bit overwhelming and hectic sometimes, you know? Which is ironic, I know, considering I was the one who came over to you," she huffed out another laugh, "but you seem very... calm, I don't know. You just seemed like a nice person to go to. Does that make sense? I have no idea what I'm talking about right now."

She ripped out a strand of grass, wrapping it around her index finger before throwing it away. "What about you?" Adelaide asks the question now, "What brings you down here?"

xxxxxxxxThis girl provided a nice respite from the boredom that Maggie was accustomed to in people. Not that everyone at Hogwarts was boring, but far too many of them shared that common idea that knowledge and learning had to be their one and only personality trait. "Oh, resting bitch face? Maybe," she chuckled, "most definitely."

To most people, that probably sounded quite rude. Like an insult, even though Adelaide had referred to herself as having the resting bitch face. Maggie hadn't started it. "That's not a bad thing, I mean. I like sour people," her cheeky grin was an effort to reconcile. Maggie often had a hard time realizing she'd said stuff that could be construed as bad, no good, below the belt. It was only after it had been said that she'd even think about apologies, and by that time it was almost always already too late. She didn't want to mess this up, whatever this was.

Letting Adelaide speak, though, was awfully calming. As the other girl spilled her guts out, Maggie flopped down onto her back, hair splayed out over the blades of green, dewy grass. With gentle fingers, she reached out and twisted a length of grass out of the grass, watching it snap at the center. "Nah, I get it. This place makes me feel crazy. Is that crazy?" Hogwarts. It made her feel absolutely insane sometimes. As wonderful a place as this was, sometimes it felt like nothing more than a hectic hodgepodge of external stimuli that was designed to do nothing more than drive you batshit. "I don't know that anyone's ever said I was calm before, but I'll take it," she laughed softly, nothing more than the whisper of a breath in the cool evening air.

"Uh, I dunno. Same as you, I guess. Just all too much over there."

To others, being told that you had a resting bitch face probably would've been seen as insulting. To Adelaide, though, it made her smile. She reveled in having one, if she was being completely honest. It made it a lot easier for her to be left on her own if she looked like she was plotting someone's murder majority of the time. "Well, thank you," she said, "I think that's a good thing. Makes it more easy for people to avoid me."

She chuckled, "You do? You don't seem awfully sour yourself." Maggie seemed like the type of girl to have a lot of friends, at least in Adelaide's opinion. The type of girl that people would just want to be around because she has that type of energy. Then again, someone who had a lot of friends probably wouldn't be sitting alone, far away from all the action of summer camp. It probably wouldn't do her good to make a lot of assumptions about someone she barely knows, though.

Adelaide stayed seated cross-legged on the grass despite Maggie flopping down onto it, and she hummed thoughtfully when Maggie spoke about Hogwarts making her feel crazy. "I get that. Don't get me wrong, I love Hogwarts. Kind of hard to not love something you've been waiting all of your childhood to attend, but it can definitely be a hellscape sometimes for us introverts. Sometimes I can deal with the chaos, and other days it's very much unwelcome." The castle was most definitely Adelaide's home away from home, but being surrounded by so many people, especially people you don't get along with, all day, every day, it would drive anyone with some sanity intact insane.

"Well, I think you're calm. You have that type of energy. You know when people have that energy that just drives people towards them? That's you. Or at least, that's my assumption." This interaction was most certainly proving to be calming, something Adelaide had desperately needed to wind down. Even if Maggie didn't think that way about herself, Adelaide going over to her for no apparent reason probably proved something. There is only a select few people Adelaide can tolerate when her social battery runs out. Apparently, Maggie was a new one to add to the list.

"Understandable," she nodded, "it can get quite hectic over there. Fun most of the time, but not so fun other times."

xxxxxxxxMaggie decided that she liked Adelaide Barlowe. Sure, she kinda had a resting bitch face and seemed like if she caught Maggie on a particularly hyperactive day she wouldn't be able to stand her, but maybe that's what Maggie liked about her. She liked people who hated her. Or had the capacity to hate her. Just reminded her of what being human felt like. Vulnerability, and all that dumb stuff.

"Honestly? I fucking hate this place," not in an 'I want to go home take me home' sense, but more of an 'I don't think I can ever measure up to the expectations of this school'. It seemed often like Hogwarts was for the forward thinkers of tomorrow, for the famous of the next year. Everyone and their mother had a big dream of being a famous Quidditch player, of being a well-known auror, of being the leader of a revolution to rival Harry Potter's (which Maggie didn't know much about. For such a famous wizard, she knew shockingly little about any history). And Maggie, while she wished to be well-known, knew that didn't come to everyone. All kids dreamed of being famous and shockingly few actually accomplished it. Who was she to believe she was one of the lucky few? "Ah, not hate. I don't hate it. But sometimes I think it's, like, a fever dream. A collective fever dream we're all having."

Magic in its essence still made absolutely no sense.

Maggie turned on her side, squinting at Adelaide where she sat. "I dunno. I guess I sometimes want to feel, like, more normal again."

A surprise blink was Adelaide's reaction to Maggie's vehemence against Hogwarts. "Really?" Sure, sometimes being surrounded by other teenagers (especially the ones she hates) every single day for months on end was tiring, but she wouldn't say she hated Hogwarts. She loved it. It was just a lot sometimes. "A fever dream?" A thoughtful hum followed her question as the Ravenclaw let her thoughts drift. Maybe Maggie was a Muggle-born, or at least someone who hadn't grown up surrounded by magic. It would make sense as to why the girl thought of Hogwarts as a fever dream, something that was still hard to believe. Adelaide could understand that. Kind of.

"I take it you aren't a Pure-blood then? Or at least someone who hasn't grown up surrounded by magic?" She asked, "Nothing wrong with that, obviously. But it would make sense as to why all of this is so surreal to you. I mean, I've grown up surrounded by magic, so it's not surreal to me, but I could definitely see why it'd feel like a fever dream. And Hogwarts definitely is crazy, I'll give you that."

Normal. What a weird concept. What even was normal? Magic was normal to Adelaide. To others, it wasn't. A loaded word, normal was. "Is anyone normal, though?" She turned her head to catch Maggie's gaze, "I think normalcy is a societal concept that doesn't actually matter in the grand scheme of things. You seem pretty cool just as you are, even if you think you aren't 'normal'." There was really nothing better to do on a random evening in August than having a deep conversation with someone you don't know all that well, but find you want to learn more about them.
