Kay was listening to the professor talk about the quiz they were about to do. The class was quite warm and the sun poured through the windows. The professor waved their wand to pass out the classwork, and everyone started to work, including herself. A student sitting next to her tapped her shoulder and asked what they were supposed to be doing.

"It's just an assignment about what we have been learning the past couple of weeks." She said turning to the girl that Kay thought was in Slytherin. Kay turned back to her work and continued to do her assignment, making quick work of it. Her quill scratching against the parchment created a quite satisfying sound, at least in her opinion.

There was a slight hum of noise in the room. "They're probably talking about the ball." She thought to herself. She put her quill down and put the lid on her ink glass. Kay turned to the girl next to her, "What are you doing for the ball?" She asked. She was quite bored and was just trying to make a new friend conversation. She still hadn't found someone to go to the ball with, so she thought that she probably wasn't going to go.

"Oh, okay," Gwen said to the Ravenclaw girl. Thanks,...?" she added, wanting to get her name. She turned to the roll of parchment that had floated to her table, dipped her quill into her favorite black ink that seemed to be flecked with gold on the parchment. Setting it to paper, Gwen tried to recall what they had learned, which took a good minute or so. Quickly, Gwen lowered her hand and started writing in her signature 'bad handwriting but it looks nice' letters. Around halfway through, a soft murmuring seemed to pass through the classroom, and Gwen caught a few phrases of the conversation, which seemed to be about the upcoming Fall Ball. Besides her, the Ravenclaw turned to her and asked what she was doing for the ball.
"I'll probably be going," she answered lightly. "Though I have no date yet, so I'll probably just be slouching around a food station. What about you? Any plans for the ball?" She hunched back over her paper, her quill hand scribbling furiously over the paper, writing whatever she could remember of the topic. She only hoped it would be acceptable and fit for society. At most, she would get an A for it, an E if the professor was feeling nice.

Kay nodded, "I don't have a date yet either." She said. "I probably won't go because fancy balls have never really been my thing." That was a complete and utter lie, she was just really embarrassed she hadn't found anyone to go with yet. Most of her friends had already found someone to go with, so she couldn't ask them to go. Her friends kept telling her to find someone to go with, but Kay didn't want to go with someone she didn't know.

"My name is Kay by the way," She said, louder than she was earlier as the class had gotten louder now that almost everyone had finished their work. Kay scribbled down a couple more words on her paper, finishing off her final paragraph. She swore that all that people talked about these days was the fall ball, but she couldn't blame them. Her mother sent her so many owls discussing what dress would look nice.

So far they had decided that if she decided to go, she was going to wear this beautiful light orange one. It matched the fall theme so it would be a good one to wear. Kay put her mind back on the conversation at hand and waited for the girl's response.

"Oh, really? I've always thought balls could be fun, if you had someone to go with. Moping around, single and lonely isn't really that appealing to me," she said. "Kay. That's a pretty name," she complimented. "I'm Guinevere, though you can call me Gwen if Guinevere is too much of a mouthful. I'm fine with either." The chattering from the class got louder, and she finished her work, spinning her quill around a few times when she was stuck on a sentence. When she was done, she capped her inkpot, wiped her quill on a small cloth to get the ink out, and set it next to the pot.
For her, this was going to be her first real ball. She had skipped one during her first year, ditching it for reading in the library like the intraverted ameature first year she was. Turned out, that was a big mistake, as she had heard from her classmates that there had been great fun and lots of drama. The reason she was more excited for it this year was because of the drama. The best drama came from balls and dances, she thought. The setting was perfect! Straight out of a book, even!
"I'm quite excited for the ball," she said, voicing her thoughts. "Even though I haven't found someone yet. A lot of my friends have already found their date. I might just settle for writing a nice bit of work about their love stories.

"I'm not going to be moping around." Kay said. "I'm probably just going to draw in the common room." She began to put her things in her bag, preparing for the end of class even though it wasn't soon. Kay blushed slightly at the compliment. "Aww, thanks!" Her father had picked out the name and somehow convinced her mother against "Samantha".

"Your name is also very pretty. It's one of the most unique names I have heard in a while." Kay was surprised by how easily they had a conversation. Usually, it took longer to have an actual conversation with someone beyond a casual hello. "If the ball is anything like the parties my parents make me attend, I don't want to go even if I did have a date." She knew the ball wouldn't be anything like those parties, she just wanted an excuse not to go.

Kay sighed very quietly. She actually really wanted someone to ask her to the ball. Even though she was really extroverted, she was really shy when it came to stuff like this. It was quite ironic really. A quick thought crossed her mind. 'What if I asked her to the ball?' but she dismissed it. She had just met her, that would be really awkward if she did that.

"Oh, sorry," she said. "Didn't mean it like that, but drawing sounds fun! I tried sketching before." Gwen shrugged. "I find that my specialty isn't in art of that kind."
"Thanks!" She beamed at the compliment. "Exactly. My parents made me go to parties sometimes, too." She cringed at the memory. "It was so boring. Like, they should have sued whoever invented them."
At this time, the professor, seeing that mostly everyone was done, called for their attention and had everyone hand their papers in. Well, more like float their papers in. Gwen proofread hers one more time, then let it fly over to the professor's desk, along with the other students' essays.
"You may use this extra time to do what you like," he then said. Then, the chatter in the room started up again and she turned back to Kay.
"I mean, since I'm pretty desparate for a date at this point, since it's only just more than a week until the ball..." she started. She might live to regret this day, but it was worth a shot. " As friends or even just acquaintences, we could go together, if you'd like. Totally fine if not." She cringed internally at herself and waited for Kay's response.

"Oh it's fine!" Kay said. "Drawing is just one of my favorite pastimes." She wasn't trying to be mean with her statement, but sometimes what she said came out that way. "Maybe our parents made us go to the same one? Imagine how cool it would be if we had met before." Kay laughed. It was an interesting thought. It wouldn't be that far-fetched of an idea, seeing as her parents threw a lot of parties.

Kay watched as the papers floated away. Oh yeah. Sure! I think it would be fun to go with you." Kay said with a smile. A small laugh escaped her lips. I was actually thinking of asking you to the dance too. I just thought you would say no." She found it quite interesting they both had the same idea. It was a crazy coincidence.

Kay began to make sure she had everything in her bag. The class was going to be ending soon, and she didn't want to rush to gather her things while everyone was leaving. The class got louder so it would be hard to hear Gwen when she responded. Kay scooted closer to Gwen to make sure she would be able to hear her better.

Gwen laughed. "Wow, that would have been such a coincidence! That would be really cool," she agreed.
As she checked the clock, Kay began to speak again. Gwen nodded after she was done, seeing that class only had a few minutes left of it. "I was unsure you would agree, too," she said. "After all, we've only known each other for literally less than a day."
At that time, Kay started organizing her things to be ready to leave, so Gwen started doing the same. It was nearing the end of class, anyways, and all of the class had started chatting and cleaning up. She put her ink and quill into her bag, rolled up leftover parchment, put the homework assignment in a small file, and put that into her bag too. Making sure that she had her homework for her next class, she dug around her bag until she felt it. Looking up again, she said to the Ravenclaw girl:
"So, I guess, see you October 8th? We can meet in the ballroom, if that's okay. " She slung the bag on her shoulder and just then, the professor announced the end of class. Standing up, she waved goodbye to Kay. "Bye!!"
