The Easter holiday was over. School was resumed, both teachers and students had to get back to work, and there was nothing else to look forward to except the summer holiday, which was still about two months away. For Marius, the two months' wait seemed like a period for never-ending work. Final exams were coming, and by his own free will, he had elected to take the optional Potions project suggested by Professor Wickham-Deakin.
The teacher had kindly designed the project for students who wished to lift their Potions grade and Marius was in need of that. However, despite this great advantage, the Hufflepuff found there were two drawbacks of participating in this extra-credit assignment. The first one was, of course, it required extra time and energy. Disadvantage number two: this was pair work, and Marius had been partnered with Ravenclaw Adelaide Barlowe.
Back in January, the two had a positive relationship since Marius helped the girl finding her missing kitten. But only a month after that, they got into a big fight: Adelaide accidentally consumed Amortentia and accused Marius as the perpetrator because of a fake love letter. She spat rude words at his face, and ever since that day, Marius had tried his best to avoid her.
Not wanting to be the first to talk, Marius decided to come earlier to the library. He would rather wait than speak to her without being spoken to. Flopping himself onto a chair, the boy busied himself with a funny book while waiting for the Ravenclaw to show up. It may even lift up his mood; he would need it to make it through one or two hours with Adelaide Barlowe.

Unfortunately, Adelaide was paired with none other than Marius Brown for this assignment. Which sucked big time, and momentarily made her contemplate dropping the assignment. Of course, she decided against that, because that would be lame and would basically be her admitting defeat. Which she definitely could not do.
Their relationship was quite strange. She was eternally grateful for him finding her cat, Nina, in January, but then the Valentine's Tea Party in February had happened and it all blew up. That tea party wasn't the best time of her life - which she had thought it was going to be - and it had even been the reason she had cursed for the first time. So it wasn't her proudest moment, even though she doesn't regret it in the slightest.
The Ravenclaw took her time walking to the library, since she wanted to enjoy the peaceful feeling she currently felt before she inevitably was going to get very annoyed very quickly. When she finally arrived, she spotted Marius reading a book. She walked towards him, "Let's just get this over with, yeah?" She said, a slight bite to her tone, her annoyance at this situation already palpable even though she had just arrived.

Here came the Ravenclaw. She said no greeting, no ice-breakers, nothing. Nothing but a short, simple suggestion to simply start that was not sweet in the least.
To be honest, Marius was not absolutely sure how to felt about her speech. On one hand, it was bad because it signalled the once-warm acquaintanceship between the two first years had not been restored yet. Gone was the grateful Adelaide Barlowe whose kitten he was allowed play with and whom he could have a nice discussion regarding potential pets with.
But on the other hand, her lack of friendliness in her tone showed that she was currently not interested in making amends with the Hufflepuff. This way, he would not have to worry about being friendly to her today, when he still felt awkward and angry. She had begun this war by giving him fire, and he would fight her with fire - he would not end what she started; if she would like to stop the war between the two, she could initiate it and he would try his best to do the same.
Because of this, he said nothing; he did not even look at her when she came or spoke to him, Marius merely glanced at the fellow first year to make sure this voice was addressing him and not another person around. As a respond to her suggestion, he simply nodded and headed to the shelves, searching for some Potions book they could use as references.

When he had nodded and got up, heading towards the shelves, Adelaide glared daggers into his back. The Ravenclaw did not want to follow him like a little, lost puppy. She didn't want him to think that he somehow had the upper hand here, that he was somehow better than her. Yet, she still needed to follow him to get the books that they would need for this project. She let out an annoyed sigh, straightening her back as she made to follow him. Slowly. "You just not going to talk to me?" She hissed when she reached him, "Gotta be honest with you, I don't think this is going to work if you won't even bother opening your mouth."
Then Adelaide got an amazing idea, a lightbulb went off in her head, a perfect jab to possibly push the boy's buttons. This was an extra credit Potions assignment, and while Adelaide was aware she didn't actually need any of the extra credit, that potentially wasn't true for Marius, right? He had to have picked up this assignment because he was actually in need of lifting up his Potions grade. So, a smirk made it's way onto her face as she leaned against the shelves, facing Marius, "Let me guess, you're falling a bit behind in Potions, right? Need a little extra credit to lift up your dismal grade? Well, I don't, I'm just here because I love learning and a little extra assignment never hurt anyone," she shrugged before continuing, "I get O's consistently, in all of my subjects, so it'd do you good to start talking to me. I could be of help, and if you actually listen to me, you might be able to get an O in this assignment. Just an idea though, if you don't want to do well you can continue ignoring me." She trailed off as she turned her attention back to the shelves, skimming the covers before finding one of the books they may need and plucking it off the shelf.

Right after Adelaide angrily asked if he would not talk to her, Marius was more than ready to reply that he would rather keep the silence between them than to communicate with someone who would treat him rudely, not to mention someone who did not hesitate to lash out a dirty word to him.
Unfortunately for the Chinese-English boy, though, the Ravenclaw apparently could predict what he seemed to need the most in this case: a help to lift his average Potions grade. No one could say that she had said it in the friendliest manner, but still, she was correct and Marius hated it for this reason. This, and the fact that if he admit it to her directly that he needed her help, it would give her to the position of power and he would be the weak person begging for some mercy.
With the rise of his anger, the Hufflepuff snatched a couple of books from their original spots, more determined than ever to "defeat" the fellow first year. He may as well consider himself as lucky for having a brain that still worked well amid the high emotion, for it was already strategizing while his hands grabbed for more books, buying time.
Some minutes later, when the two preteens were physically close to each other again, Marius gave Adelaide a smile instead of an unfriendly face, a smile that would appear sweet but was motivated by cunningness and pride.
"That was better, your last speech," he said, honey was his tongue. "I'm just simply uninterested in talking with rude people, but I see that you've got better in just a couple of minutes. I'm honestly impressed. And you were right about me taking this project for extra credit to lift my average grade. Your help would be much appreciated, but I don't want to force you for two reasons - number one, the situation isn't so dire; and number two, you're not the only Potions prodigal I know."

Her suspicions raised as he finally responded to her, his tone so sickeningly sweet it made her eyes narrow. She straightened to her full 5'1 height because whatever plan Marius was concocting in his head right now, she had to make sure he knew she was in charge. Not the other way around. "Rude people?" She scoffed in disbelief, "I'm simply being honest. If you think that's rude, you aren't going to survive until seventh year. And if that's the way it is, I have to say I'm not a fan of conversing with liars," she spat the last word out, referring to the Valentine's Tea Party that was the whole entire reason this feud between them was going on. Now, Adelaide was a lot of things, definitely, but she'd never considered herself rude. She was just brutally honest most of the time, and didn't usually think when she was speaking, but if that offended someone it wasn't her fault. Truly, they should just learn to grow a pair.
Adelaide was fairly certain that Marius was being sarcastic right now, which she honestly didn't think he had in him, but he definitely wouldn't be complimenting her after everything. "Was that sarcasm I just heard?" She feigned a shocked gasp, "I didn't know you had that in you! No, no, I'm the impressed one here." She smirked, and the smirk only widened because of Marius's verbal confirmation that he did indeed need to lift his Potions grade. It wasn't that hard to guess, of course, and she had already thought that she was correct, but still, it was nice to know she had a victory against him. Even though she wasn't actually a Potions prodigy, per say, she didn't say that. If he wanted to think she was, she'd let him. She did find Potions interesting, and had an O in the class, btu she had O's in every one of her classes, and Potions wasn't her all-time favorite subject: that would have to be DADA. But if Marius wanted to think she was a Potions prodigy, Adelaide wasn't going to stop him.
"Well, considering we're both partners for this project, I'd say we are kind of forced to do it together, so I'm kind of already forced to help you. Unless you want to go to Professor Wickham-Deakin and ask for a partner change? But that might take a lot of hassle, and by then I'd already be finished with my project, and you wouldn't get any help so," she trailed off, shrugging. She doubted Marius would actually go through the hassle of changing partners, so it was suffice to say that they were stuck with each other. And this bickering was getting slightly tedious, considering they hadn't even started their project yet. "Right, if you've gotten all the books you need, then let's go because this is getting tedious and the quicker we get this project done, the sooner I never have to see your face again," she turned around, starting to make her way back over to the desk, expecting Marius to follow behind her.
