The young girl was trying her absolute hardest not to draw attention to herself as she scurried into the girls lavatories. She flew through the door, letting it slam shut behind her and headed to one of the sinks.

Dinah glanced in each sink, deciphering in her head which seemed the less filthy.

The rest of the castle was always immaculate, or at least relatively clean but for some reason, these girls bathrooms never seemed to get a run over with the antibacterial. Dark grime coated most of the what were once gleaming silver taps and a thin layer of dust had settled on pretty much every surface, broken only by the occasional surprise splash of running water that came from the toilets that seemed to like flushing themselves.

Here you go...get comfortable in there.” Dinah whispered, opening her cupped hands and allowing the object inside to fall into the empty sink with a small slap.

With a twist of her wrist, the tap turned on and water flowed through the sink.

“Ribbit! Ribbit!”

Dinah smiled down at her new friend, pleased he seemed to be enjoying himself bathing in the cool liquid.
She had ‘rescued’ the tiny, green, luminescent frog from being eaten by one of the owls up in the Owlery. She had noticed him hopping across the straw strewn floor. There had been a particularly sly looking hawk owl following the frog with its big yellow eyes. It had pounced a couple of times but each time the frog had jumped a few centimetres ahead.

Sensing the little frogs luck wouldn’t last forever, Dinah had immediately scooped up the curious creature and decided she would keep it.
Back in the care home she had regularly tried to bring animals back to her room to keep as pets but the staff had always caught her and made her release them back into the wild.

Here at Hogwarts, Dinah wasn’t sure what the policy on stolen little frogs was. Students were allowed toads and frogs were almost the same thing, right?

You’ve got to be quiet though. We don’t want anyone to hear you.”

They might take you away, she thought worrying at her bottom lip.

“Ribbit!”

The little green frog was staring up at her, it’s rounded eyes sticking to her like glue.

Was she mad to have brought the frog in here? After all, now she was at Hogwarts she was making actual friends, she didn’t need animal friends. But something about this little amphibian made her smile so she placed her elbows carefully on the edges of the sink and watched the frog hop about with contentment.

Angela was hurrying trough the narrow corridor. She was already late to the transmutation class. If only it wasn't so high! Six floors was a lot of floors to walk through. Whoever planned this schedule with transmutation immediately after potions?

She took a turn and then heard some slam ahead. It looked like it was the door to girl's lavatory. What was going on there? She stopped, catching her breath. Everyone should be in the classrooms right now... She hesitated for a moment, but ultimately her curiosity took the better of her and she decided to sneak in and check. This lavatory was pretty nasty and Angela tended to avoid it. But right now it was also interesting.

Some girl was standing near one of the sinks, turned back to the entrance. What was she doing?

Ribbit!

What's this sound she's making?! Is she sick?

You’ve got to be quiet though. We don’t want anyone to hear you.

She was talking to... something in the sink. Angela put two and two together. A frog? Was a frog the source of these sounds?

The situation was a bit weird. But that never stopped Angela, and this wasn't going be the first time. If there was some cute frog, she definitely was going to see it. She coughed, trying to mark her presence.

Hello?, she said quietly, matching girl's subdued voice. Sorry for interrupting, I noticed you going in here... Is that a frog you got there? Don't worry, I won't tell!

Dinah jumped suddenly as someone coughed quietly behind her. She paused a second, her eyes on the frog before deciding to turn slowly to face whoever it might be. As long as it wasn’t a teacher, she could maybe make it work.

Stood behind her, looking rather interested in just what Dinah was doing was a small girl with long blond hair and a cheery smile on her face.

“Hello? Sorry for interrupting, I noticed you going in here...Is that a frog you got there? Don’t worry I won’t tell!” The girl assured Dinah eagerly.

Dinah regarded the girl curiously. She hadn’t seen her around before, or at least she didn’t think she had but there was something familiar about her. She couldn’t put her finger on it but the thought niggled at her mind.

Uh...Yeah it’s a frog.” Dinah murmured, nervously rubbing a hand down over the naps of her neck. “I found it and just brought it in here...

Saying it out loud made it seem even stranger and it had in her head. Maybe she was a weirdo.

It’s some kind of rare species I think. He must have escaped from potions or care of magical creatures or something.”

Dinah turned back to the grimy sink to watch the little, green frog hopping around and ribbiting to itself.

With a cautionary glance back at the girl she shrugged. “Come have a look if you want. I don’t think he’s dangerous.

Oh, sure I want to see him!, she laughed as she came closer. The girl's face looked familiar, but it was a bit hard to recognize in the dim-lit lavatory. Hey, I know you, you are Dinah, right?, eventually recalled Angela. We met at the aquatic animals club! And now we have some aquatic animal right here, isn't that a funny coincidence? Let's totally uh... study it, she winked.

Said aquatic animal was now ribbiting quite rhytmically. It was amusing to see it up close. Its weird frog eyes made it look comically derp-y.

Oh come on... he's so cute! Who's the cutest frog in the world? Of course you are, mister frog! It was so green, shiny and pretty, like a small ribbiting jewel. And a very kind jewel too, not even trying to hop out of the sink and run away. Slimy frog or no slimy frog, Angela was simply charmed. She felt the urge to pet it.

Then she froze. Wait... you don't know what it is? What if it's actually dangerous? My parents always said: don't underestimate even the smallest creatures, they'll have the last laugh when you die... I know, it's pretty dark if you think about it... Seriously though. It can be poisonous or something... Did you touch it with your hands?

Dinah regarded the girl stood in front of her curiously. She knew she had known her from somewhere and that explained it. The aquatic animals club, of course. Dinah recognised the girls face a bit more now that she had the image background in her head. She nodded her head in response to her name and tried to recall the girls name. She had a sneaking suspicion it began with an A but as for the actual name, this eluded her. Dinah felt her cheeks glow red at the rudeness of not remembering the girls name and hoped she wouldn’t notice.

“Oh come on... he’s so cute! Who’s the cutest frog in the world? Of course you are, mister frog!”

The girl, A, was cooing over the little green frog like it was a puppy. Dinah couldn’t help her small grin at the girls enthusiasm. If their joint interests in the aquatic animals club wasn’t proof enough, the girls behaviour around the frog told Dinah she was someone she could see herself getting along with.

As the thought was running through her head, she noticed A freeze as her hand was held over the sink.

“Wait, you don’t know what it is?”

Dinah listened as the girl expressed her worries about the dangers of the little green frog and whether it was poisonous. She thought the girls father had a very good point, regardless of the underlying darkness of the saying. However, as of yet the frog had proved no more dangerous than the common muggle frog. It seemed simply content to sit in the sink and enjoy the water. It couldn’t possibly be dangerous, could it?

“Did you touch it with your hands?” A asked, worry lacing her voice.

Um...yeah I guess I did...do you think something will happen?” Dinah was suddenly nervous and held her hands, fingers splayed out in front of her.

Was she about to sprout tentacles? Or were boils about to merge from her skin? A big painful rash?

Dinah held her hands up to her eyes, less than an inch away so that they were touching her nose. Her eyes scanned every inch of her skin for any indication that one of these things was about to happen. She nearly screamed aloud when she saw a tiny red dot on her left palm.

Oh no! Look at that!” She pushed her hand underneath the girls face, all pleasantries forgotten at the prospect of possible hand tentacles. “What’s that? Do you think it looks dangerous? Do you think the frog did it to me? Or was it already there? What if it’s life threatening?

It was unlike Dinah to lose her head over something, especially something as small as this; but she was in the magical world and who knew what could happen? Dinah was out of her depth and that worried her.

Angela watched Dinah closely examining her own hands with a growing feeling of uneasiness. Hopefully nothing bad was happening to her? She looked completely healthy... Listening to her panicking over a small red dot was getting really uncomfortable. It's not like this tiny dot was some tentacle, right? She gently took Dinah's hand, now shoved in Angela's face, and slowly moved it away.

Chill out... I'm sure it's nothing. If it was poisonous you'd already feel something way worse. Poison is their defense against predators, so it should work fast, she explained in an attempt to calm Dinah down. She still held her hand and looked her straight in the eyes, talking in reassuring tone. You will be fine. Don't worry.

She let go of the hand and turned her attention back to the frog. I think it's just a normal frog. But what should we do with him? Do you have some plan? Maybe it would be best to just carry him back to the lake... Or back to the potions class. I mean. If he really escaped from there. The thought of giving Mr. Frog up for some potion was depressing. But Angela had her fair share of birds and mice fed to the owls behind her. Some things just have to be done. All small animals must meet their sad fate so the bigger animals can eat... or make potions. That's simply how the nature works.

Feeling rather stupid after her outburst, Dinah looked down at the floor blushing furiously. It wasn’t often she overreacted like that and even less so in front of another person. It was more than embarrassing.

Dinahs face filled with surprise as the other girl - Angela? Angela! Her name was Angela! - reassured her that she would be fine and if she had been poisoned she would most likely have already been affected by now.

She held Dinahs hand and looked at her fully, almost as if she was her mother telling her everything would be alright. The thought made Dinah chuckle to herself quietly.

Thank you. Sorry, I don’t know what made me panic so much.”

Angela smiled and dropped her hand, turning back to the frog. He was still hopping around the sink seeming unaware of the interaction between the two girls.

“...What should we do with him? Do you have some plan?” Angela asked her eyes following the frogs movements.

Dinah found her own gaze following the little frog also, it was almost hypnotic to watch its green body hop forwards and backwards, ribbiting every so often.

What had been her plan for the little frog? She wasn’t even sure. All she’d wanted to do was make sure it was safe and maybe get a little pet out of it. Could she really send it back to the potions  supply closet where he was sure to become the victim of someone’s shrinking potion or something? Dinah shuddered at the thought and shook her head.

We can’t send him back to potions...I’d kind of just been planning to keep him but I guess that’s a stupid idea...

Dinah rubbed the nape of her neck and looked at Angela helplessly. Was the lake the best place? Dinah wasn’t sure but she didn’t see another option.

Seeing Dinah's undecisiveness, Angela realized she was losing her patience. What is this uncertain girl even doing if she doesn't know what she's doing? It's not like this poor frog can take care of itself, not here in the middle of the castle.

Oh come on. You're responsible for it now. Figure something out, said Angela in a reprimanding tone. I don't think you can keep it, she added skeptically. You would need an aquarium or something. And I don't think we are allowed to have that.

She decided to pet the frog. If it didn't kill Dinah, she'll be fine too. Or they will get both sick. Worth it. She leaned over the sink and started slowly caressing frog's skin with one finger. It was cold and wet, but also nicely soft and smooth. For a moment only quiet stoic ribbits echoed in the lavatory.

Another idea came to Angela's head. Hey, but where did you even find it? Maybe it would be best to just put it back there. You know. So it can return to the family. To its green wife and tiny children. She turned to the frog. Because you have a big family, right? You look like a family type.

Karley was wearing headphones while sitting in the corner of one of the stalls, finishing a Suduko puzzle in a magazine she had swiped from somewhere. She was listening to Classical music but it had suddenly gotten louder when someone had slammed the bathroom door, so she didn't hear anything at first. She was chewing on a piece of her hair and glancing at her iPod every now and then, for time and to see if she broke her record of finishing the Suduko. She guessed that since she wasn't focused as she usually was that's why she didn't beat her time of one minute and forty-two seconds.

Karley let her hair slip out of her mouth and she readjusted her cloak, which made her headphones slip partly from her ear. This made her hear the voices of someone else in the bathroom. She froze, listening carefully. She took off her headphones and leaned slightly forward, coming to a crouch. They didn't sound like the type to snitch that she was skipping class, mostly because they were probably skipping as well.

Karley licked her lips out of habit and slipped an unopened lollipop from her pocket, slipping it between her lips. As she folded up the newspaper she decided that she'd just walk out the bathroom, going to class maybe or another secluded area, and just glance at what they were doing.

Placing the newspaper inside her arm, Karley opened the stall door with a loud creak and walked out, staring straight at the two girls. She walked up to them, a little taller than them both, and stared down at what they were chittering about: a little free frog. Karley's mouth parted slightly, just small enough that her blue lollipop didn't fall out of her mouth and onto the dirty floor. Then she grinned and said, joking, "I ate one of those before. Taste just like a meatball with a mossy taste to it." The she frowned and pointed at it. "Isn't that a Natterjack Toad? Or at least a baby one?"

At Angela’s harsh tone, Dinahs expression became steely. For a moment she was reminded of the care workers that had demanded she get rid of her various stolen pets and she felt her first clench beside her.

Almost as quickly as it had come, the feeling vanished as Dinah realised this was just another girl stood in front of her, not an angry adult.

I could keep it here if I wanted.” She muttered, indicating to the sink half heartedly. “I’m sure it would love it, free reign of the sink, as much water as he wants.”

She watched fondly as Angela petted the frog. It seemed any worries of poison had been diminished by Dinahs apparent good health after touching the creature.

She listened to Angela’s suggestion of returning the little frog back to where she found it and shuddered. “I found him up in the Owlery, about to get eaten by one of the school owls.”

Dinah had a horrible thought that maybe the little frog did have a family but they had fallen victim to the eagle owls talons. Not wanting to seem pessimistic, she pushed the thought away.

About to make a suggestion of what they could do with the frog, Dinah was surprised out of her train of thought when a girl suddenly appeared from one of the stalls behind them.

She was tall, or at least taller than Dinah and had a lollipop in her mouth and a newspaper under her arm. The girl was looking at the two of them like they had just interrupted something but her attention quickly turned to the frog still hopping around in the sink.

Dinah barely registered the girls joke, she was more concerned about whether the new addition was about to run and get a teacher and tell the two of them off.

“Isn’t that a Natterjack toad? Or at least a baby one?” The girl asked, pointing at the little frog with a frown.

Looking between the girl and the frog, Dinah shrugged. “I don’t know...I thought it was a tree frog or something. It’s too bright I think to be a toad...”

She wasn’t an expert in frogs or toads so she honestly had no idea. She was basing her guesses on what she’d read in books.

Dinah glanced over at Angela, to see if she was any the wiser to what it was and to gauge her reaction of the new person to the situation.
