Compartment #33
Lilith just about went through the brick wall leading onto the platform when the train hooted loudly, signaling it was about to launch. The new student quickly shoved through the throngs of crying parents and chattering friends that were already reconnecting after a summer apart.
Almost running into a second year with his owl, Lilith narrowly avoided missing the train as she leaped on, lifting her heavy trunk behind her. Some of the Hogwarts students already changed into their robes, causing Lilith to stand out in her grungy street clothes.
Lilith filtered through the other kids as she found an empty compartment: Number 33. She slid the door closed behind her and dropped the blinds, hoping that would be enough to keep any of the other kids out. If she was lucky, Lilith would get her compartment all to herself just as she liked it.
Her heart beat roughly in her chest and Lilith willed herself to calm down. She couldn't push down the thoughts of her mother worrying and calling her father just so they would both bother the Ministry about their missing daughter. Lilith forced herself to remember that her mother used to be a Ravenclaw. She wasn't dumb and hopefully, she knew that Lilith wasn't dumb. Plus, her mother would never go crawling back to the Ministry unless she found some way to pointlessly sue them.
Lilith growled to herself as she changed into her robes and threw her grubby clothes into her trunk with more force than necessary. Lilith wished the aching in her chest would disappear in favor of the familiar love of Hogwarts to arrive again, but it didn't.
"Hogwarts will be better," she promised herself.

Jane and her parents exchanged long hugs and goodbyes that should have been shorter considering how close they were cutting it. Jane’s father handed her the trunk then with a smile. “Go on now.”
Jane didn’t think she had ever been as scared in her life as she was right now. Her parents were her best friends, and she didn’t know what she was going to do without them. But, her father had told her to be brave, and her mother had assured her that everything would be alright. They believed this was the right thing to do, and she trusted them. So, pushing fear from her mind, Jane marched forward.
Boarding the train, Jane noticed several students of various ages still milling through the hallway, joking and chatting. She tried to keep out of their way as she scanned for a compartment with an available seat.
Most of the compartments seemed to be full, but Jane spotted one with closed blinds. She slid the door open and peered inside. There was only one girl in this compartment, so there was plenty of room for Jane as well.
Jane smiled at the girl as she walked in, heaved her trunk into its compartment, and plopped down on the seat opposite the other girl. “Hello,” she said cheerfully, trying very hard to push the thought of her parents from her mind. She extended her hand across the empty space. “I’m Jane Greenway. It’s nice to meet you.”

Lilith frowned when the girl walked in, but quickly replaced it with a blank look. Maybe she should have locked the compartment instead of just moving the blinds down. The train must have really been packed this year. Lilith's eyes flickered to the girl's hand before reluctantly shaking it.
"Lilith. Lilith Westlocke," she greeted half-heartedly. She leaned back in her seat and crossed her arms. Her mood turned like dark clouds and tried to avoid the new girl's stare by looking out the window.
She must be awfully desperate to sit by me, Lilith thought grudgingly. Loud voices moved back and forth from their compartment and Lilith truly hoped no others joined them. In Lilith's opinion, it was crowded enough as it is.
The Trolley Lady opened the compartment door and ask if the two girls wanted any sweets. Lilith shook her head. She heard that at Hogwarts they had a grand feast for their arrival and hate to be full upon looking at all the delicious food they were sure to have. Plus, she could feel the few galleons she had left jiggle in her pockets. She may need those for another time.
"No thanks. Not hungry," Lilith said gruffly before turning back to look out the window. "But you can ask her," she motioned to Jane, "if she wants anything."

Evelyn had changed in the bathrooms instead of a compartment because she didn't want to get caught in the middle of trying to wiggle out of her sweater somebody if entered. She did end up finding a compartment though; the blinds were down so she doubted it was full. Luck seemed to be on her side today as well because there was only two girls in there when she entered. She waved hesitantly before noticing the girl from The Leaky Cauldron. It was Lilith! She almost launched herself at her in a hug but that probably would've ended in her accidentally hitting the other girl.
Instead she settled on bouncing on her toes. "Lilith! My divine owl, we meet again!" She tugged at her scarf before sliding onto the bench opposite to Lilith.
Evelyn sat with her legs crossed and close to her. She couldn't keep the smile off her face. It was fate she swore! But it would be rude of her to ignore the blonde girl sitting next to her, so she didn't.
"Hello! I'm sorry about not addressing you earlier. I'm Evelyn!" She would of offered her hand out but she was unwrapping one of the candies she got from the snack lady that had exited the compartment before she entered.
"It's good to see you again. And it's nice to meet you for the first time! I'm glad that Lilith has other friends!" Evelyn already considered Lilith a friend, despite only meeting her once previously. And because this was the first time she saw Lilith with somebody else she assumed they were friends.

The girl Jane had joined in the compartment didn't seem to be up for conversation. That was understandable. This was very new to many students, so she wouldn't push her any further. When the trolley lady offered sweets, Jane also declined the invitation kindly. She had never had sweets that appeared to be magical before, and she was afraid one might start moving or something. Jane honestly doubted that was true, but she wouldn't take any chances.
Another girl popped into the compartment then, obviously in a much better mood than Lilith, and Jane couldn't help but smile. Good moods were often contagious, just as bad moods could be. She had immediately started addressing the other student, but Jane waited patiently for her own introduction. When she received it, she smiled brightly in return.
"It's nice to meet you." She almost extended a hand before realizing Evelyn's arms were completely full. "I'm Jane Greenway."
Jane wondered how the two girls in the compartment knew each other. They seemed to be so very different, yet Evelyn acted as if they were great friends. However, she knew different personalities shouldn't stop two from becoming good friends. How boring would it be if everyone was exactly the same? Quite boring, if you asked her.
Trying to strike up a friendly conversation with the other two, Jane asked, "So, are you excited about attending this school?" She took a moment to look down at her twirling thumbs before adding on, "I'm quite nervous, myself."

"She's not my friend! We just met!" Lilith bristled silently, mostly at the dumb nickname. She wasn't divine anything. She crossed her arms stubbornly over her chest and said, "And I never said we were friends." But it came out weak.
Great, Lilith thought. Two smiley and happy girls. Just was Lilith wanted.
Seeing Evelyn came as a shock. She only met her a couple of days ago in the Leaky Cauldron and Lilith expected to be forgotten and they would never see each other again except for the slight eyes-scanning over each other in the corridors. It looks like Evelyn would be more difficult to shake than earlier anticipated.
The new smiley girl, Jane Greenway, introduced herself to Evelyn and then all excited about Hogwarts. She seemed nervous and Lilith figured that's how most of the first years would be considering Hogwarts was new and unknown territory.
"You don't have to be nervous," Lilith stated dryly. "Many of students came in and out of Hogwarts. Only a few casualties every year."
The words had already left her mouth before Lilith realized that it wasn't best to say that. It may be mistaken to cause fear instead of comfort. Lilith mentally shrugged. There wasn't much else to do once the words had already left her mouth.
"Anyways, since I'm stuck in this compartment with the two of you and whoever else comes barging in, we may as well—" Lilith shivered. "—talk to each other. So, do you like Quidditch?" Lilith fell back on her old line.

Jane already seemed like a super friendly person. So she ignored Lilith's protest about her not being friends with her, because they totally were, and swallowed the candy she was sucking on to answer the question. The candy hadn't gotten any smaller yet during the duration of her snacking so it slid uncomfortably down her throat. She still smiled though to mask her silent chocking. Once it had gone down she waved her hand in the air to dismiss the idea of her being nervous. Lilith had made a dry remark about casualties that made her feel better about her chances of dying.
"Excited yes. But nervous? Not about the school itself. I mean, the lake makes me nervous but my father told me that they're aren't any classes first years have to take that force you to go near it. So unless that changed I think I'll be fine. Like Lilith said, only a few people die each year! It's under a hundred at least. Which means I should be fine even if we're targeted in an attack because either everyone around me dies and I get to live or I die with everybody else and somebody else lives. I like my odds of survival! What about you?"
She hummed happily before remembering that she forgot to respond to the quidditch question. "I fly, but no I don't really find interest in quidditch. The entire game system is wackers and I prefer doing other activities anyway."

As Evelyn chatted on about the actual odds of dying or not at Hogwarts, Jane felt her mind begin spinning in circles. There were causalities? At a school? Surely if her parents had known that, they would not have sent Jane away. She knew absolutely nothing about magic. How would she protect herself and those around her if there was an attack? She would be dead weight, therefore, one of the first to go.
As these thoughts crashed through her mind, Jane vaguely heard the conversation switch to something she hadn't heard of before. Quidditch? What was that? And did they say something about flying? Can all wizards fly?
"I'm sorry," Jane interrupted, still trying very hard to push the thought of casualties from her mind. "But what is Quidditch?"
Adverting her eyes back down into her lap, she added on, "I know that's probably a stupid question, but I wasn't raised around magic." Smiling a bit, trying desperately to stay positive, she continued, "But I would love to learn anything you could tell me about it!"
Lilith was very... sour, it seemed. It was almost like she brought up death just to make her uncomfortable. Jane truly hoped that wasn't true, but there was no real way to know. However, Jane did know that it was important to be kind even when others did not reciprocate kindness. So, she folded her hands across her lap and waited to see if Lilith or Evelyn could tell her anything about this... Quidditch.

"Are you a Muggleborn then?" Lilith asked. That would explain how nervous the new girl felt and especially not having knowledge about Quidditch. "It doesn't matter," Lilith brushed off her own question.
"Quidditch is a wizarding sport. Kind of like Muggle soccer, but in the air and played on broomsticks with bludgers that'll knock you off your broom and large hoops you have to get the Quaffle through. Wonderful game."
Lilith wasn't exactly oblivious to Jane's obvious nerves, she just chose to ignore it. This is probably the most Lilith talked about anything in a while. Probably more than the entire conversation Lilith had with Evelyn in the Leaky Cauldron. Lilith assumed that was a step up, even if most of her conversation had been rude and vexing. Ah well, not everyone can be perfect.
"There are seven positions: three Chasers, two Beaters, one seeker, and one keeper. The Chasers try to get the Quaffles into the hoops, the Beaters have bats to hit the bludgers, the Seeker tries to find the Golden Snitch, and the Keeper protects the hoops. A simple game, really."
Lilith was ignorant of the fact that others may not know everything about such a brilliant game as Quidditch. One of the pro-cons about being raised in a Pureblood family she supposed.

Evelyn leaned back, she was considering if she should join in on explaining Quidditch with her own view. Because Jane seemed to be a muggleborn she didn't want to use the magical terms she would've used to explain the mechanics making the game run. So instead she was stuck with the rules.
"The entire game revolves around the seeker though. If they catch the Snitch it's pretty much over. There were only a couple cases in the history of quidditch were one team scored enough that when the opposing team caught the snitch they were still ahead. It's really difficult because once the Snitch is caught the game ends. Kind of like those games you make as a kid where you just as rules as you go. But some people do like it and I can't fault them for that. Every game has flaws in it's making. Like Golf, which is very dependent on the weather. Even the slightest breeze can knock a perfect shot off course. I'm getting off topic though. We're on quidditch right?"
She tends to ramble but had been getting better at returning them full circle. Her mind was always branching off into different paths and sometimes she forgot to stop moving. It reminded her off a train station without brakes. The most you can do it turn the track until you return to the original topic or run off the rails and into a ravine where you most likely will kill the conversation.
