Classes were out for the day and Colin decided that it was time to fly! The afternoon was warm and overcast. If it would rain, so much the better! So Colin traded his satchel for his broom, making sure he had the essentials in his pockets, and ran all three hundred thousand three myriad and three winding and twisting steps that led up from the dismal and miasmatic cellars where his beloved Slytherin House was relegated all the way up to the light and air of the main level of the castle.14 September 2022
From there, his bare feet bore him swiftly out the door, through the courtyard --- crying "OWOOOOOOOOOOOOWOOP!!" as ever so loudly as he could! --- and out into the grassy meadows beyond! Oh, how Colin loved the feel of the damp grass under his toes, and he soon found himself in the just the right spot. Slipping out of his robe and letting that fall to a heap on a small outcropping of stone, he let his shirt fall next to it and did on his leather flying gloves. With the biggest and happiest of grins, he clambered on to his Silver Arrow and punched it skyward!
"YEEEEEEEEEE-YEEEEECK!!! WHOAAAA!"
Gaining height, he performed some basic manoeuvres like slides and dips and chicanes. His long blond hair trailed behind him and his heart pounded as he imagined dodging trees and trolls and zipping between racing opponents alike! He imagined flying out here with Clair! My God, she could race couldn't she? That girl was made for speed! He'd have to ask her to come flying with him. Nothing formal, just a heart thumpingly exhilarating flat out race with the girl he loved!
"CLAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRR!!! YOWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
When his practice racing was done, he circled over the quidditch training pitch and leaned in for a flat-out race to the stone outcropping! He ducked his head and leaned down along the shaft of the broom, and sighted along the silver arrow point that served as the broom's knob. He saw a green haired figure not far from the stone outcropping.
"Hm! Wonder who that is?" Colin zipped towards the figure and realised the eyes were focused on him! Was this someone he knew? He didn't slow, and the green haired boy didn't flinch. Colin smiled. Must be a Gryff! At the very last second, he cranked his broom around ninety and skidded to a halt about three feet away from the boy.
He hopped off his broom, tossed it up into the air with his right hand and caught it in his left. Smiling at the other boy, he cried: "WHOO! Heyo lad! Now that was flying! I'm Colin, by the way."

Keith woke up with an idea, he needed to explore. He hopped out of bed and walked to his trunk. He grabbed a plain green hoodie, it had bits of silver on it, His parents had bought it for him, thinking he would land in Slytherin. He hadn't worn it yet, so he wanted to try it on and see if it was worth keeping. It was pretty comfy, so he decided that was the top he would wear. Now for pants, or should he wear shorts? 'Hm... shorts would be comfy, and my pants need cleaning... I should work on potions later, I don't want another incident like last Wednesday. anyway, now which pair of shorts?'
Keith looked and picked up a black pair with some holes in them, 'These will do! Now,' "what should I bring with me?" He hadn't meant to say that part out loud, he looked around to make sure he hadn't woken anyone who might still be sleeping. Nobody seemed to hear him, so all was good.
Keith made his way down with his notepad, he had to take notes on things he saw. He walked down and said hello to other Gryffindors and made his way out of the castle.
Keith decided he would go and explore the quidditch training pitch. He ran there, he loved running!
As he walked in he saw someone flying around on a broom. He carefully watched them, as they flew across the sky. "Wow! I can't wait to fly," He said, as the person flew towards him. He froze, what were they going to do?
The person stopped and Keith noticed they were barefoot like he was. Keith only wore shoes to classes. He listened to the boy as he introduced himself, Colin? He heard that name before, and that voice.
Keith looked at him, "Hi! I'm Keith! That was some really good flying." Keith said to him, smiling, then it hit him. "You're that kid who yelled 'Clair' something at the sorting, right?" Keith asked. He was sure it was the same kid, the voice was so similar.

Colin looked the green clad, green haired boy up and down. He smiled. Another barefoot boy? He nodded as the boy introduced himself. "Keith Good to meet you, then!" He bowed his head slightly. His chest and face turned red as he blushed when Keith mentioned his howling for Clair at the feast. "Aye, I'm the one who shouted out for Clair! I like her, and, well, she's Ravenclaw and I'm Slytherin, so it made sense to give her a shout, right?"
Colin thought back to the sorting ceremony. There were so many new students! But, yeah, a green haired boy stuck out in his memory. Cabbage Head got sorted into Gryffindor! He narrowed his eyes --- nah, this one needs a real nickname. We'll have to see! He gave Keith a wry smile. He teased Keith: "Ye're wearing green and silver, but didn't the Hat put you in Hufflepuff or something?" He laughed. "Just joking!" He gave Keith a playful punch on his shoulder. "What do you think of the place so far? Does Gryffindor suit you, do you think? My cousin Alena got Hufflepuff! Hmf." Colin paused for a moment, thinking back to his own sorting, last year. "I think the Hat plays with us sometimes. I wanted Ravenclaw so badly --- and I ended up in Slytherin. I wish Alena got Slytherin, and well, she's a Badger now!"
He slipped his shirt back on but didn't button it up and asked Keith: "Do you like to fly? Have you flown before or will your lessons here be your first time? It's so much fun, and you can hardly beat the Silver Arrow!" Colin nodded towards the quidditch pitch. "Do you wanna go check it out? I'll race you there if you want!"

Keith sees Colin blush at the mention of Clair, "She is a pretty girl, I haven't met her yet, but someone pointed her out to me, though I'm not sure who it was. I take it she doesn't know you like her?" Keith was glad to find someone to talk to, so he started taking notes on the boy.
Keith looked down at his hoodie, "Oh this, yeah... My parents thought I would end up in Slytherin like they were, but I was put into Gryffindor like my aunt." Keith winced when Colin playfully hit him in the shoulder but made it very unnoticeable.
"I think the place has too many hallways and rooms for me to be able to explore. I'm curious about what the other house's common rooms look like. I think I would have fit in any of the houses, they all sound awesome! The hat said something that would have put me in any of the four houses, but he decided Gryffindor. Alena, that's a cool name! I wanted to be in Hufflepuff, but that's not what the hat had in mind."
Keith looked at the boy's broom. He thought for a moment before replying, "I have flown on a broom before, but not by myself. I would like to go see it though, I'll race you on the ground!" Keith said smiling, he loved running. He looked at the boy, would he race him, or just walk with him?

Colin blushed deeper when Keith mentioned someone pointing Clair out to him. He felt a surge pride welling up in his heart! He sighed but had a big smile on his face. He couldn't help but gush: "She's really beautiful! She's a racer too, Keith! But I don't know what there is about her. She doesn't seem to know I even exist! I mean, we've talked a lot. We rode together on the train and everything! I really do like her --- like, a lot!" Colin positively beamed as he talked about Clair. "I'm gonna marry her some day, you know! But --- sometimes I wonder. I know she's really smart. Is she playing a game I don't know about? Or --- I don't know! I just have to figure out how to get through to her."
He smiled when Keith spoke about his family's expectations for him being in Slytherin and his own wish to be in Hufflepuff like Alena. "I know a lot of families seem to expect their kids to be in a certain house. And the Hat sometimes goes along. I know mine expected me and my ---" Colin's voice caught as he remembered the reason why he wanted Ravenclaw so badly "--- my brother to be Ravenclaw... But, if there's one thing I've learned about it, the Hat plays a game of its own. You're not the first student I've met who expected to be in one house and got another."
Colin laughed when Keith said there were too many corridors and hallways! "No way! Laddie, we've got seven years to explore the place! There's loads of places I haven't been yet, but I plan on exploring every place I can get into! Well --- maybe not the girls' dorms. You know!" Colin made a face. "I'm sure they'd hang me from the rafters by my toes if I tried that!"
As Colin picked up his bunched up robe and got ready for the foot race, he said: "You should sign up for broom racing, Keith! It's so much fun! Well, if you don't die or get knocked out, anyway!" And with that they tore off along the slope down towards the practice pitch. Keith was a fast runner Colin discovered, but it was exhilarating to find someone to race with!
Keith was just ahead of Colin and they ate up the distance in no time! And just as they neared the end of the race, Colin's foot caught on something!
"YEEEEEK!" Colin flew through the air, his robe floating away, caught on the Silver Arrow's stirrups, the sleeves and hems fluttering in the breeze of their flight. And the broom itself coasted along about thirty feet before gently impaling itself into the soft earth near the pitch.
Colin on the other hand was not so fortunate! His unassisted flight was rather shorter and less than graceful. It landed him face down and skidding to an ignominious halt in a heap in a patch of wet muddy grass! "Oof! Oh, blast!" he said as he rose up from the mire like some eldritch creature from the swamps, all covered in muck!
He looked up to see if Keith had continued on to victory, but couldn't see anything for the mud and grass in his eyes! This wasn't the spectacular win or even the more than acceptable tie or even the honourable loss to a fast runner that Colin had been hoping for! Oof.

Keith listened to Colin gush about Clair, he must really like her. Keith wished he could figure out his sexuality, he was so confused, cause recently he found other boys cute, but he never had seen boys like that before, so he was very confused. But he wouldn't talk about it now, he barely knew this kid. Keith waited until Colin was done talking about the girl to speak, "You never know, she might like you, even though she might not know it yet. I'm sure you'll figure it out."
Keith wondered if the boy would explore with him sometime, maybe he would ask after their race. He listens to Colin say things about families and getting sorted. "This kid knows a lot of people." Keith thought.
Keith chuckled at Colin saying something about the girls' dorms, "If ya want I could ask some of the girls I know what their dorms look like, then draw them based on their descriptions, I know some girls from the other houses." Keith thought for a moment, "I could ask EmmaLee or Avery, and for Ravenclaw, I could ask Bailey."
Keith looked at Colin again, "I want to be a racer, but I have got to buy a broom first." Keith got ready to run, his favorite thing to do.
Keith ran, he ran fast, and Colin was keeping up with him, something that surprised Keith, "This is awesome, a real challenge, I actually have to try, this is so fun!"
Just as Keith was about to win he lost sight of Colin, and heard a scream-like sound. Keith brought himself to a stop and turned around. "Colin!" Keith ran back to him, "Are you okay?" Keith held out a hand to help Colin, "can you see, there's grass and mud all over your face? " Keith felt bad, Colin looked a mess.

Colin had smiled when Keith said that maybe Clair just didn't know she liked him yet. It reminded him that there is always hope. "Yeah, I'm sure you're right about that. It's still --- I don't know ---" Colin trailed off. "I reckon I just have to work harder to get her to see me, right? She's worth it!" He looked over at Keith. "That was pretty wise for a first year Gryff!" He almost asked if said wisdom was gained through personal experience, but decided that he'd wait until the other boy volunteered.
As the conversation turned to the girls' dorms, Keith seemed to have a plan worked out already! Colin laughed as the other boy said he could get a girl to tell him what it looked like and then he'd draw it. "Hang about! You can draw? No way --- I love drawing! Blast that I didn't bring me kit with me. We should draw some time!"
After Colin's spectacular belly flop into the mud, Keith said: "Are you okay? Can you see? There's grass and mud all over your face?"
Colin accepted Keith's outstretched hand. "I think it's much worse than that laddie!" he said as he got up. He wiped his face off and looked down. Grass and mud covered pretty much everything from his forehead to his knees! He took off his shirt again --- "Caked in mud. So much for keeping that clean!" He shook his head. "So much for keeping the rest of me clean, too!"
He hung his stained shirt up on the still upright broom and got out his wand. At first, he aimed it at the sods that he'd torn up during his graceful descent to earth: "Reparo! Mustn't leave the Earth scarred, right?" Then he pointed his wand at the poor shirt and said: "Scourgify!" Then aiming at himself, he used the same incantation again. "Those, laddie, are an active boy's two best friends and no mistake!" He looked around to see if anyone were spying on them. "Especially when there might be nosy Prefects around! I'd much rather hop in the lake and wash off proper, but magic will do in a pinch! Come on! Now let's get in the pitch and see how well you fly!"
And with that, Colin gathered up his shirt and robes and broom and headed onto the practice pitch!

NOTE: Now that Colin is reasonably clean, Keith might notice numerous scars --- bite marks, scratches, scrapes and the like all over his torso, arms and shoulders, in addition to the scar across his left eye and the one on the right side of his neck. He'd also notice the wolf fang necklace that hung over his heart-shaped birthmark.

Keith smiled, he found a drawing buddy! He looked toward Colin, "We'll have to find a time to draw together, maybe next weekend?" Keith was happy, he would have to find his drawing supplies, they had to be somewhere. "Crap, why did I have to lose the stuff" He thought.
Keith helped Colin up, "You didn't break anything did you, that sounded like it hurt. And now it looks like you hit the ground really hard." Keith backed up, allowing Colin room to take his shirt off. Keith got a little scared when Colin said something about keeping himself clean, cause he sounded angry to Keith. He flinched when Colin wiped out his wand, from past experiences wands never meant something good.
Keith watched as Colin performed spells to clean his shirt, "Woah, that's cool. I'm glad he wasn't mad at me, if this happened to Father or Mother, I would be in big trouble, even though I didn't do anything." Keith thought to himself. He calmed and continued to watch Colin as he cleaned himself with some spells. Keith watched Colin fix the ground where he had landed. Then Keith noticed.
"Is he okay? those look like they hurt whenever they happened. Wait... bite marks, that's weird. Those gashes, look like they were so painful. Oh, a necklace, that's cool. Why a wolf fang though? And a heart-shaped birthmark, that's an awesome birthmark. That scar on his eye, why didn't I notice it before?" Keith looked at Colin with sympathy, "I won't ask, it might be rude. I'll wait till he is comfortable telling me."
Keith followed Colin into the practice pitch. "I wish I had a broom of my own to fly around here. I'll have to ask aunty to save up for one."

Colin noticed that Keith flinched when he got his wand out. How odd was that! He'd have to ask about that some time. Kid's only been at Hoggys for what, a fortnight? He can't have been attacked already can he? It's certainly not unheard of for older students to --- do things --- to younger students. Practice minor curses and hexes on them, threaten to turn them into newts if they didn't fetch the mail or make tea or something.
"You didn't break anything did you, that sounded like it hurt. And now it looks like you hit the ground really hard."
Colin smiled at Keith's concern. At least the younger student hadn't been corrupted yet! There were some boys who would mock him or tease him for what had happened. Keith just seemed to be worried. He looked away as Keith checked out his scars. He let him look, then said: "Nah, I didn't break anything! As you can see, I've had worse." He didn't say anything right away, as they walked into the empty training pitch.
"I reckon it's no big secret any more." Colin narrowed his eyes as he looked off into the distance. "Got into a tangle with a young Werewolf before starting school last year." He pointed out the bite marks. "And again this last summer. That was more of a battle --- there were a bunch and Da and our kin fought them off. I ---"
Colin stopped short. Not because of the Werewolf thing. Colin determined a long time ago that anyone who wanted to be his friend also had to be the Werewolf's friend. He tossed his stuff on the warm grass and laid down beside his broom. "My brother, he fought too. Liam. He was my twin." He looked up into the blue sky, remembering deep blue turning to star spangled black of the night a little more than a month ago. "One thing you'll need to know is that I got bitten and scratched by the Wolf last year, so my first year here was spent mostly hiding what I am. But if you want to be my friend, you have to know that I am a Wolf." Colin drew a deep breath and let it out slowly. He let his gaze settle on Keith's eyes. He was pretty sure the boy was a pureblood --- no way of telling how he'd react to Colin's revelation. "It never got any easier to tell people. One of these days I expect to do this and end up being killed or trapped or something. Not everyone is cool with Wolves being allowed at Hoggys. Also, Keith: I --- I understand if you don't want a monster for a friend."
Colin closed his eyes, waiting, half expecting to hear the sound of Keith's footsteps retreating from the pitch.

Keith was glad Colin hadn't gotten hurt really bad, Keith hadn't learned any spells yet, so he wouldn't know how to help if Colin had got hurt. He walked beside Colin in silence as they walked to the training pitch. It wasn't until they reached the pitch that Colin spoke.
Keith listens to Colin talk about how he was attacked and heard something about a twin. "You have a twin! That's cool. Wait... What do you mean "was" your twin, what happened, if you don't mind me asking?" Keith hadn't known the boy long, but it sounded like something bad happened to his twin. Keith watched as Colin sat by his broom, "Is he okay?" Keith thought. Keith sat beside Colin, but kept his distance, he didn't like to invade people's personal space.
Colin explained that he is a werewolf. Keith looked a tiny bit surprised, "So that's what all those gashes and things are from. I shouldn't say anything, seeing as I don't know what to say."
Colin went on to say how some people didn't like wolves in the school, then he said something that hit Keith in the heart, not because it hurt him, but because of what Colin had called himself. Keith turned to Colin, "You are not a monster, and I still want to be friends with you. All you have been is kind to me since I met you. I would be happy to be your friend, Colin. Now, Come on." Keith stood up and held out his hand, not sure where he would go, but knowing he wasn't going back to the castle quite yet. "Maybe the lake? Let's ask Colin" Keith looked Colin in the eyes, "Wanna go to the lake? It's really pretty." Keith waited for Colin to respond, hoping the boy would want to go.
