chani moon is an 11 year old korean boy, with dyed silvery-white hair and dark grey eyes, a colour which oddly runs in his family. his natural hair color is black. his sister is the one who dyed his hair that color when she came home one summer and he's kept it ever since. he's around 4'3 with a slim build and pale skin dotted with light freckles.

for an 11 year old, chani also tried to keep a neat and clean appearance, his hair always perfectly styled and never a blemish found on his skin. it's a trait inherited from his mother, this obsession with aesthetics. this extends to his clothing, with his wardrobe being perfectly curated to his liking. this includes mostly light colored clothing with soft sweaters and hoodies being his favored items of clothing.

older adults used to describe him as angelic-appearing. his skin is absent of all scars and marks, save for the occasional bruises marring his knees or elbows.

personality

an introverted but not quite shy boy, chani is an intelligent, observant child. he keeps to himself mostly, staying hidden in the shadows, always watching the world around him from a distance. he also struggles quite a bit with anxiety, preventing him from speaking up in classes or talking to new people. some of the adults his parents were friends with described him as cynical.

because of this strange attitude, chani has always struggled with making friends with children of his parents' friends. when there was a gathering at someone's house, he always managed to slip away or retreat to a back room. he has always been good at disappearing into the shadows. becoming invisible.

chani has always been more analytical, excelling in mathematical and scientific subjects, though struggling more with english. words are difficult for him, the boy can never seem to get them to say what he was thinking. instead, his way of communicating his thoughts is through music. a talented pianist and violinist, he'd been studying both since the age of 3 and wishes to learn more.

the boy is organized and clean, sometimes to a point of obsession. if even a book were out of place in his room at home he would fixate on it. even worse was when his sister would get mad and mess up his room, throwing the boy into a fit where no one could calm him down.

growing up to physically present but mentally (and sometimes physicall) absent parents and a distant older sister has left chani, even at the young age of 11, solitary. the boy relies entirely on himself. he has learned, though not quite fully, to not trust the promises of others. in other words, if he wants something done, he'll do it himself. he has stopped expecting things of people, finding a sense of comfort in their absence. and yet he is still 11, so in his heart of hearts he never really stops hoping that maybe this time he'll be proven wrong.

chani was born to his parents, hyunki and doyun moon in seoul, south korea where he lived in a tiny apartment with his older sister, yeon. she was 7 years old when he was born. at the age of 4, when his sister was 11, they moved to the isle of skye for his mothers research on magical plants. his father, though residing with them, was typically in london for his work with the ministry. yeona always resented their parents for moving.

the isle of skye was different from the bustling streets of seoul, though chani hardly remembered them. though he and his sister were close, he grew up a bit lonely, immersed in his studies and practicing his music. as a child, his favorite thing to do was run to the cliffs overlooking the ocean and play to the sea, as he put it. he would spend hours out there. this was the only time he would let his hair get messy, mussed by the salty sea breeze.

that september, yeona went to hogwarts and chani was left alone. his father was always off in london or holed up in his room. his mother, lonely as well, spent her time either reading countless books or was away for hours, sometimes days at a time, collecting samples.

the village where they lived in the isle of skye was a small community of wizards and witches. tiny, really, consisting of a few lanes in the middle of the scottish countryside. a little bit away from the village lay a slightly larger, muggle inhabited village. here resided an older lady who was a squib and knew of the wizarding village, her parents having resided there decades before. just as she knew of the wizards, the wizards knew of her, and families in chani's neighborhood pointed her out to the family as a friendly face.

during one of the early weeks of their move to the isle of skye, chani's parents decided to take him and his sister to visit the small village. this is when the boy heard the older lady, named ada, playing violin in the small town square. he was entranced. even as a young, energetic toddler the boy stopped and stared, refusing to leave even when his parents ushered him along.

his love for music blossomed here. ada, the squib, began giving him lessons in violin and piano. they would go to her house on the edge of the village on tuesdays. though his parents worried he may reveal his magic to the muggle villagers, they were comforted by the relative distance between ada's house and the others as well as the fact that she was a squib. still, this was the one time at least one of his parent's made sure to take off of work to observe the lesson and ensure nothing went wrong.

at 5 years old, his parents began alternatingly homeschooling him, though it was mostly his mother as she was home most often. when he was younger she would sit with him at the kitchen table for hours, learning english and arithmetic. but as chani got older she would teach for an hours or so then assign him worksheets to do while she went off for her job. while for other children this may have resulted in a stunted education, chani was intelligent and responsible enough for his age to complete his work. by about 9 years old he was self-studying for the most part, having been taught to do so early on.

first magic

chani's first instance of accidental magic occured when was about 6 years old. bored and with his parents busy somewhere once again, he was laying on the carpet trying to invent a way to play cards with himself. as he began to drift off to the sound of drizzling rain and the crackling fire, a small movement caught his attention. still half-asleep, he watched blearily as the previously ordinary little cards hopped around clumsily, toppling over themselves as they attempted to stack into a card tower. the magic was a projection of the friends he wished to have.

sleepy as he was, the boy didn't notice his parents watching from the entrance to the living room. a small, proud smile graced their lips as they watched the little cards stack into a small tower before toppling down once more. this only went on for a few moments with the cards soon stilling and falling over as the boy's magic was weak and he was tired.

still, his parents were proud of their budding young wizard. from there on, small instances of accidental magic would occur where chani would make a trilling teapot shatter (he hated loud noises), or an item would float down from the top shelf (he was short for his age). chani himself had no particular reaction to these instances. shocked at first, yes, but he had been exposed to magic all his life and had always felt that sort of energy flowing in his veins.
