Edric tried to pay attention to what Professor Scheinberg was saying while at the same time keeping on eye out of Marcia. He could see now that she was definitely feeling unwell: she was still white as a sheet and also had started to shake quiete badly, not moving from her spot at all. He contemplated going over to her and checking with she needed go to back to the castle and visit the infirmary, but all three professors were watching them like hawks and after how their Head of House had screamed at the boy called Charley - who'd set the ballroom on fire at the Blossom Festival - he really didn't want to get on her bad side. So Edric waited until she was done explaining her plan for the evening.
Before he could come to her aid however Marcia had already made her way over to his boat. The closer she came the more he could tell how frightened she looked. Something was scarimg her badly, but he didn't kmow what to do to help her. "You alright, Marcia?" he asked when she was standing in front of him with one foot in the boat and one foot on the shore, her green eyes fixed on the dark surface of the lake, limbs shaking.
The girl didn't seem to hear him, nor did she react in any way to his words. She just stood there motionless, until she scared Edric a good bit when she suddenly jumped into the boat, her fingers white where she clutched the side of their small boat.
He was relieved when Marcia finally looked at him, even if her smile was wobbly and she still appeared to be on the verge of breaking into tears. She was afraid of the water, he realized when she told him that she couldn't swim with a small voice.
"It's alright," he tried to soothe her. "We'll just sit here and won't move and nothing bad will happen, okay? Professor Scary- I mean Professor Scheinberg said that the boats are save. We can watch the sky, look at all those stars."
He indicated at the starlit sky above them in hopes of distracting Marcia a bit from her fear with the beautiful stars.
"Look! There's Altair," he said and pointed to the star that marked the Aquila constellation.

And slowly, the scenario played out exactly as his worst fears had gone inside his head. Children, laughing, smiling, or simply serious, all milled around, conversing with one another, excitedly asking to share a boat. Two by two, they settled into the tiny rowboats, began to float off across the dark water.
None of them approached him.
With every pair, he felt his heart sink, just a little bit further. They all seemed so happy to see each other, and nobody even looked his way. He honestly didn't know what he was expecting if not this, he was always picked last, for anything. After all, who on earth would want to be stuck in a boat with Miserable Morsus? So what, he was in a new school, hundreds of miles away from home? So what, there were all new faces here? It was never going to be any different. They didn't like him. They didn't want him. He was just, there.
Dead weight.
Slowly, his head bowed, his shoulders tightened, and his long, pale fingers wound themselves in his robe as November bit back the tears that threatened to spill forth, loud and raw and ugly. A few escaped his grasp, however careful, creeping down his cheeks to dive into the grass below, mix with the dewdrops. They twinkled as they fell, tiny little stars in the night.
Sniffling softly, he tried to pull the rest back in, regain control as he hid below the comforting shield of his wide-brimmed hat. Carefully, he chanced a look up, even knowing the sight that would greet him. However, one thing was slightly different than the expected picture: One of the pairs of girls had broken up, one straying off towards the castle, the other heading back to the lake, alone.
She was cut off, adrift. Just like him.
Slowly, November pulled back his sniffles, tried to swallow his tears. He approached with tiny, cautious steps, still expecting some other, far more desirable child to come in and sweep her up. It seemed none was forthcoming, however, and at last he found himself before her.
He believed her name was Anastasia, if he'd caught the snatches of conversation that drifted from those gathered here correctly. Had seen her passing in the halls, seated at the dinner table, but never really connected beyond that, and now she was stuck with him. He supposed she wouldn't be pleased about that, to have to share a boat with November, pale and strange and gloomy, and not her friend, so he spoke with a voice softened with caution as he called out to her.
"Anastasia, was it? Hello, I-... um, suppose you'll be needing someone to ride with..."

Aravis looked around frantically. People were partnering up so quick it hurt her head. She didn't know any of these people, other than Isabella. She saw one person who didn't have a partner and was about to walk over to him. However, as soon as she took one step forward, he was asked by someone else.
Aravis shook it off looking for anyone else who didn't have a partner. In the forest exploration Professor Scheinberg had just pushed people together, that had been so much easier. However, she didn't want to be alone. After all, the black haired girl was terrified of water and boats.
Then she spotted her next target. So far she hadn't seen anyone near Professor Barclay. Aravis hasitly made her way over towards the Astronomy Professor. He was an adult, so therefore if she fell out of the boat or nearly died he would know what to do right? "Um, excuse me, Professor Barclay sir? Would it be ok if I partnered up with you? I couldn't find anyone else, and I'm terribly afraid of water." She said in a rather shy tone. She wasn't find of speaking to adults very often, they terrified her. Even if he said no, he could probably point her towards the direction of someone else who didn't have a partner. Or so Aravis hoped.

Anastasia was beginning to feel very worried. She didn't have a boat partner yet and she was sure almost everyone did. She walked around the group helplessly looking for some who was also lonely to join her.
She was very startled when someone started talking to her. "Anastasia, was it? Hello, I-... um, suppose you'll be needing someone to ride with..." She spun around only to see a boy with dark black hair. "Ah, yes." She stuttered. "I would love for you to be my partner, November. Oh and my name is Anastasia." She said. She could feel her cheeks flush and begin to heat up. "Wait, it is November right?" She asked, having a complete mind blank.
She had seen this boy a few times before in and around the common room but hadn't had the chance to speak to him. It would be nice to get to know him and possibly make a new friend. She smiled kindly at him.
Anastasia giggled with excitement. She had found a new partner and she was very excited. She hoped dearly that she would soon become friends with November.
Anastasia glanced over at her friend Isabella who was standing next to the head of house, Leonie. She gave her a quick smile and couldn't wait to find out what they would be doing.

Slowly, Syrah got out of the boat. She should have realized she wasn't supposed to get in them yet, but she was one of the first students to arrive and Leonie wasn't saying anything, like always, she never knew what to do around that lady. And so, with her cheeks quickly warming in embarrassment, and even more so when she realized they were reddening, and walked to the back of the group of kids who had gathered.
she had to admit, though, she was glad Scheinberg sent her previous boat mate back to the castle. She knew the boy, Charles York, from her House. She had heard bad things about the kid, and it all was proved true at the Blossomfest Ball, when he began spouting pure blood propaganda and lit a couple of tables on fire. It was childish and racist and, although she wasn't a muggle born, she wasn't a pure blood either, and so she was happy she wasn't in a wooden boat in the middle of a dangerous lake with the kid.
However this did mean she was partnerless. Seemed ironic. During the Forest Exploration the previous month she didn't have a partner originally, but she was the last one there and she found one pretty quickly. Whereas here, she was one of the first there and she ended up alone. She looked around, worried for a moment, but stayed quiet, still in the midst of her embarrassment.

TIME: 8:25 PM
RUN-DOWN:
- Isabella Hills was partnered with Leonie Scheinberg.
- Kyden Goodlow was partnered with Fainauriel Valtome.
- Maisy Dane and Katya Petrov partnered.
- Leeds and Erin Ryan partnered.
- Marcia Kingsleigh was partnered with Edric Banes.
- Glen Pope with Blaze Flyte.
- Anastasia Brown partnered to November Morsus.
- Aravis Escanora partnered with Thurston Barclay.

As expected, Isabella Hills made her way to Leonie’s side, though Leonie didn’t take the time to acknowledge her partner just yet. She eyed the others as they paired up, narrowing her eyes at the few that seemed to be lacking partners. Last time she had taken students out on an expedition, she had pushed people together to form partners. She really did not want it to come down to that again - physical contact was not favoured.
The girl that had been near Isabella beforehand (ANGELA) was left without a partner, and with a glance around the crowd, the German woman could tell that a girl dressed in a long, black and white skirt (SYRAH) didn’t have partners. So, of course, with a sigh Leonie looked to Isabella for the first time since she approached her, “Stay here.” She directed, before parting off and going towards the girl in the skirt. Once approached, without a word, Leonie grabbed a hold on her wrist, taking her towards the girl that Isabella had been next to beforehand.
“You two. Partners.”
That was all she had to say before she retreated back to her original position with Isabella. She eyed the young prefect from the corner of her eye, going straight to the boat behind them, “This is ours,” She mentioned, her accent highly noticeable, as per usual. With ease, she climbed in. There was no way that the boat would tip, even if Leonie wanted it to. The enchantment was stable, and it would stay that way.

❝Are we to stand here all day!? It baffles the mind how incapable some of these children were. Even to heed such routine instructions as 'partner up' and 'get in the boats' was a painstaking chore that they did not seem capable of handling on their own initiative. It was all I could do to restrain my baser instinct screaming its advocacy for me to lambaste each of them in turn. It was not time to make them cry. Instead, it was possible I could encourage the immediacy of this process by offering some gentle words here and some light ushering there. Leonie's actions were swift, fronting the issue partially by pairing two of them into boats in far fewer words than I would have employed. Fabulous! Maybe now we could get things moving along.
Stepping into the fray, I immediately started pointing along the line of following students not yet in a boat and still uncertain of whether they wished to partner or not [Blaze] and [Glen], [November] and [Anastasia], and finally at [Aravis]. The first and second pairs I motioned towards two vacant boats respectively. I pointed Aravis towards an empty boat while enlightening her that "Mr. Barclay will enter shortly after." I turned a sharp look towards the man in question, a knowing look that would ask and say all the things that did not need to be asked nor said. They needed to speed things along.
"Now that I've taught you six how to not creep like puling babes, I shall protract the lesson by propounding pedagogic benefactions." With a sweep of my sibylline eyes across the lot of them where they sat in the boats, I reveled in the pin-drop silence that met my words. I would say this in the simplest words I could manage for ease of clarity, of course. "The boats will move at our command, bring us to the center of the lake, we release the lanterns, and then we all go back to our respective housing areas and sleep for the day to come. Simple, yes?" My tone was far more mocking than it should have been, but c'est la vie. I motioned to Mr. Goodlow with a crook of my finger as I walked toward and gracefully entered our boat first, trusting that he would not keep me waiting.
The moment Mr. Barclay entered his own boat, we would be off into the darkness beyond, accompanied by the soft glow of the lanterns and light from the crescent moon above. Here I sat, hoping beyond hopes that these children would observe some modicum of retentive capabilities so as to remember the rules that Professor Scheinberg had so generously outlined in that curt way she did. It could not have been made clearer even if I had glossed the words with my own personal flair. Let us go, Mr. Barclay, before I begin to have second thoughts about leaving myself at the mercy of these little monsters, students rather, in open waters.❞

Thurston was mainly bored in this situation. Not that it would show… well it did, but it was not much of a difference to how he usually looked. A black pullover hugged his upper body, one that was less helpful and comfortable. He waited while he watched all these little monster pair up with each other until someone finally had enough courage to approach him. When everything was settled and the student chose to partner with him, they walked over to the boats, Thurston keeping silent.
When the man of average height sat down in the boat, he would take the two objects used to row on the Lake, when he remembered something. Amusement shone in his eyes as an unusual smile tugged at his lips. Taking a glance around he saw Professor Valtome nearby. Perfect.
“Hey, Valtome” he called out, not bothering to use the title as he waited for the Potioneer’s attention. “The deal is still active” he reminded the half elf casually, as they had not conversed much after meeting in front of the Apothecary Shop. Help for help, Potions for support in whatever the Potioneer had to do.
After that small reminder he turned his attention towards Professor Scheinberg, completely ignoring the student in the boat so far.

Isabella didn’t have the time to reply before her Head of House walked off into the sea of students. She admired the way professor Scheinberg seemed so confident among so many. Feeling sure she would never be that confident, she watched as the blonde grabbed onto a girls wrist before pulling her over to the girl who had asked her to be her partner before. She paused for a few seconds in front of the two girls, before making her way back over to her.
Looking down as the professor approached, she nudged a small tuft of grass in front of her with her shoe. Her Head of House made her feel nervous. She was known throughout the school for being cold and sharp tongued. It just stumped Isabella as to why she would want her as her boat partner, surely there was someone the professor would prefer over her.
Isabella stiffened slightly as professor Scheinberg passed her, not enough to be noticeable but enough to make her feel guilty. What could this professor do to her? She was a student, and an eleven year old at that. It wasn’t like she was going to set her hair on fire. Or push her down into the depths of the Great Lake. If she wanted her as a boat partner then she must like her at least a little bit, right?
Turning as the blonde spoke, she gave a small nod that the professor probably wouldn’t see. She was almost waiting for the women to laugh and tell her she had been joking, that she didn’t want to share a boat with her, and send her back with the other students to try and find another partner. As she watched professor Scheinberg climb into the boat she realised that she was indeed not joking, and that she actually wanted her to share a boat with her.
Covering the distance to the waters edge in a few seconds, she clambered into the boat. It felt steadier than it should of been. A normal, muggle boat would of rocked slightly from side to side as she entered. But this one didn’t. It stayed in almost the exact same position. Assuming there was some sort of spell or enchantment on the boat, she stopped thinking about it and sat down at the back of the boat. It felt odd to be sharing a boat with a professor, she usually avoided them if she could. To her, they were like another species that should be left alone as much as possible.

After the professors finished speaking Blaze glanced over at the boy who he was paired up with, "Glen?" he asked looking at the boy and tilting his head to the side. The very next thing Blaze thought about was not to screw up his conversation with the new boy he didn't know. "You need to stay calm don't just start acting weird," he told himself looking around for an empty boat. Then he saw one, immediately Blaze knew this had to be his boat. Sure he wasn't really the most assertive person and in reality, he would have settled for any boat in the end. Still, Blaze wanted that boat, and what was different about this boat and what fascinated the boy, It was a small scratch on the side of it. Tough hardly noticeable it made the boat unique.
Blaze stepped into the boat gesturing at the boy who he guessed was named Glen. "I'm pretty sure we should get seated before the boats leave," he told him as he patted the seat next to him. He then took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. He kept on telling himself not to do something stupid and to stay calm and to wait for the other boy to speak so that he doesn't speak himself.
