A New Year, A New You?
Leaving for his Third Year at Ilvermorny, Summer 2022
"Miles, do remember that this is an important year," she said as her eyes looked down to some of the candy that sat on his bed to pack. She sighed, expressing her disapproval and then leaned down to gather them up one by one.
"The Hexwizard Tournament, yea," he agreed and watched her, knowing those items wouldn't be going with him to Ilvermorny. "But you needn't worry about me. I'll be safe, if anything. I'll keep a level head."
He watched as her eyes rose to meet his curiously. "You'll win, Miles. This isn't just an opportunity to show the worth of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry but you're not also going to shame the Thatcher family name. You will win."
"Or what? I'll be forever a disappointment as I always have been? Nothing new," he retorted, reaching down to pick up his bag. Whatever was in there was in there and honestly, he really just wanted to get out of that damn house - away from her, away from his father, away from all their expectations that were impossible to meet.
"I'll get myself to school the same way that I survived the Summer outside of camp with seeing you and Father oh....all of maybe 6 hours total? Besides, I want to stop by and visit Gran and Lissa before heading out."
"Now it would be quite permissible to see your grandmother before you leave, Miles, but a house elf is quite ---"
He cut her off.
"Quite a bit like family, actually. I shall wish her well until I see her at Christmas time and let her know I'll miss her."
There was so much more that he wanted to say but being only Thirteen it wasn't in his best interest to spew out direct insults at either of his parents but with their treatment of him he also wasn't going to offer up more niceties than he had to. Miles pushed past her and out the doorway, not saying a goodbye, nor one to his father who was in the living room with his nose in a book. Even when they were home, which was very rare, they weren't really present.
