It was hard to do things when there was not a lot to look forward to. Hanako was fully aware of the things that were to happen during his summer. Incoming divorce, separation from his siblings, a new home, a complete change of environment, a distant mother eager to make amends, just one of the many. But for once in his life, he didn’t want to ignore it at the cost of his own mental health.

Only because there was a certainty that Percival Rainwood would be there for him. The way his heart felt light when Rainwood agreed to visit was still fresh in his mind. To be this dependent on someone else felt like he was walking on thin glass. Any turbulence, and he would only have himself to blame. That was a huge reason for his lack of friends growing up. But Rainwood was different. The two had gone through numerous trials. It was only recently he felt truly trusting of Rainwood as he had proven to Hanako that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Perhaps if Hanako wasn’t so drunk on happiness, he would remember that it was a human instinct to lie.

Rainwood suddenly disappearing wasn't much of a concern at first. Being a pureblood means that sometimes his family requires his attendance, right? But hours turned to days. And days turned to desperation, and desperation turned to unanswered letters. Gone without a word, what was Hanako supposed to think?

It was easier to keep positive early on, but as the day the divorce was finalised, it was clear Rainwood left on his own accord. Perhaps it was a crude joke. A subtle message of the uncrossed line between them. Revenge to Hana for doing the same thing during their 1st year. Hanako had known Rainwood was not one who forgives easily. So was he the fool that believed he was an exception? The last letter he sent to Percival Rainwood was much shorter than the previous ones. Whether it was him or another that read it, they would only find a few sentences in the letter.

Dear Rainwood,

Well played. This makes us even. I couldn’t be happier with this result. It was clear that this was the most comfortable for us.

Thanks for wasting your time,
Tone
Child of divorced parents, living with his new aunt, and his new intense hatred for the one called Percival Rainwood. Times certainly were changing. For better or worse. Hanako would only find out once September arrives. The same enchanting dark eyes and golden hair would only ignite a certain fire in his heart. One vastly different from the previous years.

Hanako Tone
Asagao Tone (Mother)
As a rather spoiled child, having things taken away from you was never a good thing. But still, Hanako felt like he asked for too little. Was it so much to want his parents to get along? To have regular dinners? To see each other with the love and respect he sees other kid’s parents have? In fact, seeing each other in the first place was the bare minimum he wanted. And yet even that can’t be achieved.

Perhaps it was too much to ask his father to pay as much attention to him as he did to Hanako’s younger siblings. Too much to hope for his father’s only criteria when it comes to having a loving father-child relationship is to be gifted at a young age.

Or maybe it was too much to want to continue studying in Hogwarts. To want to utilise the one thing he’s good at and do what makes him happy. If it wasn’t too much, then maybe they could still stay together as one family. But that wasn’t the case now, was it?

In a car with his mother, the eerie silence ensued between them remained untouched. What was there to talk about? What will our new house be like? Where were you for the past few years? Why did you suddenly want to be a mother to me, now? Did you know about dad’s affair? Do you resent me? Silence was meant to as it is; silent. But with burning questions, it became only the opposite.

The usually chatty Hana would prefer to keep it that way. Even with the questions, he learned staying silent would be the best way to go about these sorts of things. Like how he shouldn’t have asked Rainwood to join him to visit his house this Summer. He was far more preoccupied with his mothers appearance.

He had been told they share the same face. ‘pretty’ was certainly the correct term to use when describing him and his mother. Not seeing her for so long, he only had a blurred image of her when she came to mind. But today? He was certain the same people who said they looked alike would take back their words.

Eyes on the road, he took the opportunity to notice her. The lost energy in her brown eyes, the creases forming under her eyes from excessive concealer, the obvious blush around her cheeks as if she wanted to assure people she wasn’t a corpse. From afar, she looked well for a newly divorced woman. From closer up, Hanako thought it would do her good to take a long nap.

I’m okay, Hanako ” He almost coughed. Was his staring that obvious?

I- I never said anything” he insisted with a huff.

You didn’t need to “ she still kept her eyes on the road. But seemed unwilling to share more. Hanako merely returned the silence. It would be a few minutes later until Hanako’s mother spoke up again. “ This house we’re going to live in. My cousin owns it. We’ll be staying with her for a while. Just until things settle down”.

Hanako perked up slightly. Now this was new information.“ I didn’t know you had a cousin.. Or I an aunt

It was only recently that we were able to communicate with one another less discreetly. Remember what I told you in the letter before you came back for the summer? The one where I said there were a lot of things to talk about? And the things I’ve kept from you?” Hanako nodded. “ Well, this is one of them. I’m unsure if a car ride is the best place to talk about this. But if you want to know about it now..I wouldn’t mind talking to you..at all”.

Now, Hanako suspected that it was not only him that had more pressing questions they didn’t want to get into right now. But at least between the two of them, one wanted to initiate conversation. At first, he wanted to disagree.

But who else did he have now? His mother had the choice to leave him to his wealthy father and just let him deal with muggle school himself, just like the absent mother she had always been. But among all the family members involved in the decision, she was the only one that fought for Hanako’s decision to stay in Hogwarts. If this was her attempt at making amends for her shitty parental guidance, it was working. To wriggle your way into the heart of a lonely teen, it was usually easy. Especially if it was Hanako.

And so it began. From the moment the Tones in Japan pushed his grandparents to run away. To the attempts to hide for generations only to have it shatter because his mother wanted to go to Hogwarts. To his grandmother’s trip last year where she never returned, and now it was certain that she never will. The newly attained freedom they have now that his grandmother was back in Japan. The agreement that they were to never associate and openly admit their family tree connections. It all seemed like a dream, really.

His family tree was always so short. And now it was much bigger than he thought. Thankfully, the ride to his aunt’s house was a long trip. After his mother was done, he was able to have room for his discovery to digest. He had never verbally thanked her, but it was clear he was grateful. To be trusted enough to know this, to have the longest conversation he ever had with his mother, and to finally have something else to think about that didn’t involve Percival or his parents divorce.

Silence ensued for the rest of the car ride, but for once, it was comfortable.

His new home certainly looked…far from what he was used to. He understood it wouldn’t be as huge as his previous penthouse. It was a modest bungalow just near the edge of Borehamwood. Normal looking on the outside, but the interior… it was something.

The movers will come in soon enough with our stuff. For now, just take a look around the house. Your aunt will come in around 8pm, later. I’ll stay here with you for now

Does she live alone? “

That obvious isn’t it? “ the two Tones glanced around the abundant color aesthetic of the house. It was either she lived alone, or she shared a house with someone who shared her particular taste in decor to a tee. Certainly looked like a house meant to only please a certain type.

While the Tones sceptically looked through the house, Hanako’s snake was more than pleased with the results. “ CUTE CUTE CUTE CUTE “ Hanako heard her scream while she slittered to every nook and corner of the living room.

Anything else I need to know about this new aunt of mine?”

She’s popular enough for you to look up on your phone

Is she.. A wizard?”

Yes, but she has been living among muggles for a few years now. And adapting very well. I helped her a lot when she just started out, which is why she’s eager to lend us a hand

Hanako was ready to turn on his phone, but stopped. “ What about the information that’s not on there?” The information about her before she lived among muggles.

His mother sucked in a breath before sighing. “ That is sensitive information. One Miwa needs to tell you herself.” With perfect timing, her phone rang with a familiar number. “ Movers. Something probably went wrong. Hanako, remember not to use your wand. But this house is far from the muggle neighbourhood. There might be certain magical things you’re not familiar with. Don’t panic. Yes? Hello? Yes, Asagao Tone here what do you need-?” Her voice became further away as she moved towards the outside of the house. Until she closed the door behind her, Hanako finally realised how alone and unfamiliar he felt in this house.

CUTE

Well, perhaps not totally alone. While Cu Sith continued her exploring, Hanako sat himself on the plush pink cough and typed in ‘Miwa Tone’, not expecting much. To his surprise, he was right.

There was little information about her but the information about her was clear. Formally known as a relatively popular solo artist, she stopped producing music and started her career as a music teacher. Used to have a relatively big community of fans. That dwindled as the years went on. Many critics said it was a poor move on her part to stop producing music and started teaching. And if she stayed in the spotlight longer and started teaching later on, it would produce more attention and value than it is now.

After that scandal, there wasn’t much said about her. The most Hanako could find is a short article of her stating that she was stepping down as a teacher for a while to focus on private family matters. “Hmm…us, I’m assuming. Isn’t that right, auntie?” he asked the photo of Miwa provided in wiki.

She certainly looks a lot like mom. If she smiled more that is. Don’t you think so Cu Sith? “. Cu sith was picked up by Hanako to allow her to fully see the photo from Hana’s phone. She was a snake. She could not see things, as she sees the world in temperatures. But the second she saw Hana’s aunt, she gasped.

CUUUUUTTTEEEEE “ Hanako knew what was going to happen next.In a second, he dropped his phone on the sofa and scooted further away so Cu Sith could have her time to fawn in awe at his new aunt. She seemed more excited to meet her than him.

It was still surreal. He expected his siblings to come out of one of the empty rooms. Or his father to come in through the front door. They loved to read in the living room. Though not at home often, his dad could be seen in the kitchen cooking something up when he had the free time. His senses reminded him of the enticing scents coming from the kitchen, where his dad usually is when hes not busy. Slight mumbles of whatever their siblings are reading. Huge indicator that they were focusing.

His eyes stayed on the front door for a few minutes, as if expecting something. With each passing minute, his chest began to feel heavier. Like something weighed it down, attempting to swallow him in a pit of ..something. Loneliness? Misery? Fear of the unknown? The persistent urge to expect he would just wake up, and all would be a mere dream?

Invisible hands suddenly felt like they wrapped around his arms, neck, chest and head. The abundant colours around him made his head spin. Everything suddenly felt too real. The divorce. The separation. Percivals betrayal. Silence was too loud. Nothing anchored him down and he was barely grasping on what he could. How could he get out of this? Somewhere in the back of his throat iched, begging to be let out. To have some sort of external outlet that could leave a dent in the world. Be seen, be heard. Nothing came out. It's too early. It already happened. This was his fault. His mother was just outside. He was fine just now. Why now? Why this? What now?

“....Ha..na?”

huh?” Despite her immense attention to Miwa Tone just now, Hana found her sliding up to his lap, looking up to him confused and.. was that supposed to be sadness? “ Cu Sith.. whats-”

It was only then a gentle weight was felt just beneath his eyes. One of the many that trailed down to his cheek, chin and to his now damp pants. As if he were allergic to such a thing, he rapidly used both his hands to wipe them away. It was a useless feat of course. The more he wiped them away, the more they came.

ahm umm ahhh ahahah no I-” his voice coarse and dry “ I um.. I dont cry. I’m not supposed- to.” And yet all he did was cry. For the next few minutes the room would be filled with gentle cries and somber hissing from a concerned snake. Immensely unfamiliar for both the boy and the room.

The delicate balance of caring for oneself and for others. Antics of his younger self screamed protection, by pushing everyone away. “For their safety and mine’s”. Preteen Hana was lucky. Found good people. “ Vulnerability was okay. If I’m not hurting anyone, they won’t hurt me”. If he worked at it, nothing would be broken. End of 3rd year, he had worked for Percival and him. More than he had ever done for anyone. And look where he is now. Couldn’t someone tell him the answer now? Spare him the trail and errors. All he wanted was to be completely fine.

Crying was frankly one of Hanako’s last retorts. If it wasn’t acting out, it was harassing others. If that wasn’t it, there was always sleeping for days. He had never been in a situation where he couldn't pick any of the formerly mentioned options. This was new. The last time he had done it (if he remembered correctly, and his brain wasn't entirely reliable at the moment) was when his parents failed to come for his birthday. They too promised him something they couldn't keep. He tried his best to never go back to those moments.

Then nothing changed? Years of pushing away people, actively giving them reasons to keep him at arm's length, focusing on just keeping himself happy. What did all that work lead to? Back to square one? Back to the pathetic 7 year old who just missed his parents? Crying was despicable. And oh so tantalisingly soothing.

To have the thing he feared become his hero, his mind was the same state as his face. Muddled and messed up. Soon later, a headache kicked in. Sparing him pain, he laid his head on the sofa pillow. Auntie Miwa would come home to a tear and snot splattered sofa. Did Hana care? NO. Would he care later? Maybe. Can’t leave traces of his embarrassing cry, now could he? Cu Sith - blessed being - did the thing she was best at. Making him remember he wasn’t alone this time. Not now, not ever. Soon, exhaustion washed over Hana. Before he closed his eyes and fall into the hands of slumber, a last thought floated through his mind.
