"If I didn't know any better I'd be under the impression that you've already conducted all the experiments."
Green squirmed slightly under the girl's gaze, suddenly looking very much his age again as he glanced sheepishly at the others, apparently uncertain as to what to do with her favoritism. "Not conducted, just watched; I've had the advantage of working with my father in his potions shop," he said quietly.

He did not say that he didn't intend to conduct more, himself. It was best to only tell a lie once cornered. Rather, he leaned forward, watched.

The boy's eyes narrowed in concentration as he the fourth-year explained the binding process. Some of this was beyond him - he had never heard his father explain what a "crystallite property" was, (not that his father did much explaining at the best moments,) but he made a mental note to look it up soon. He was impressed, but unsurprised when the potion required no wand waving at its end - that it was simply chemistry, not any extra magic drawn forth, that was diluting and extending the billywig venom's effect. And that was when he knew that these would be the secrets to success - not any particular procedure, but the things that would allow him to go beyond the recipe books, beyond guessing, into truly grasping the hidden properties of what lay beneath the shallow surface of the world.

His mind so raced with these things that when the girl shifted shapes in front of him, he didn't notice it for a second, his eyes still locked on the vials with his thoughts; it was only after Lorelai's question that he looked up, blinked in confusion, and wondered the same as she seemed to be wondering. "Regardless, thank you for the instruction - that was quite enlightening. And... something of a paradigm shift for me, personally," he added respectfully, rubbing his chin. Why had he never thought about thickeners this way before...?

Constantine looked into the cauldron with interest, watching as it changed in consistency and color. The experiment was thrilling to watch, however confusing the Hufflepuff had found it. His only concern was the complicated way in which the potion was made - however, with the help of the senior student, and Green's intelligence as well, Uschi would never run short in supply. He watched eagerly as the test tubes were filled with the liquid, and as their contents rose, so did his hopes that Uschi would benefit from the potion. There was still a nagging doubt that it wouldn't work, but he'd yet to see anyone drink something with magical properties.

The boy had immediately noticed the student's absence from the table they were working at, concerned that the cauldron would explode similar to it's predecessor. At first, he had been surprised by the change. Of course, Hogwarts wasn't an ordinary place, but was this the norm for all Professors? He certainly wouldn't like to walk into Herbology, only to find his teacher had disguised themselves as a potted plant. Although, he didn't blame them - if he could change his appearance like that, Constantine couldn't deny that he'd use it to play a few lighthearted pranks. The Hufflepuff felt his cheeks redden slightly, embarrassed that he had walked into the classroom with practically no knowledge of potions, only to be impolite to the student turned Professor.

"Whilst I can't say I understand it enough to truly appreciate the work that goes into making such a potion, I must really thank you for helping us. " Constantine smiled gratefully. He was intrigued to hear why the Professor had pulled such a 'trick', although it didn't bother him all that much as to how they looked. All that mattered was that they were willing to help, and kept their word.

Uschi listened as patiently as possible, wondering if she would ever be this good at potions, or anything really. The way Green and this student spoke made her feel like a worm in comparison. It was like listening to her parents speak when she was four, understanding most of the words but the message going completely over her head.
She stood back when the senior girl rounded the table and then... changed her appearance. Uschi couldn't help it; she gave a little squeak of alarm and stumbled back into a shelf of potions, hand over her face.
Thankfully the potions only jostled in place, and did not fall.
Even the girl's clothes changed to an adult's clothes, though the hair was still long and blonde and framed her face... his face? It was hard to tell, which made it all the worse for seeing. The only thing that calmed her down was the attitude of her friends. They all seemed to recognise her... him.
Lorelai even called him professor.
She studied the figure again, head toe and back again, this time remembering how Lorelai had described the enigmatic potions master previously. Changed forms, Lorelai had said. Having lived in the muggle world she'd never seen anything like this. It was creepy, and what did the girl think about having her appearance used like that?
Still, she eyed the potion in the test tubes with barely concealed desire. "Is... is it ready to try now... sir?" she ventured carefully.

They each wore varying degrees of surprise and puzzlement on their faces as I shifted, but that didn't seem to last very long, a fact for which I was thankful. As Mr. Babbit uttered his thanks while hinting naturally that he hadn't understood it all, I inclined my head in his direction in a single nod of acceptance. I hadn't expected them to get it at once, but they had seen the complexity behind potion-making and why it was not something to be trifled with. That was all that was needed. My eyes cast a look in Ms. Brunelle's direction, my smile growing less radiant and descending into a sly abyss.

"Because, Ms. Brunelle, it is an age-old gospel that people, prepubescents such as yourselves to be more precise, conduct themselves differently when in the face of authority." Namely, myself. Hopefully, that answered her question. In the form of the fourth year, a form I think I would rather like to exploit further in the future, I had managed to espy a level of initial candor from the first years that had warped into mim upon learning that the fourth year was my 'aid'. Further still, all manner of contumacy had fled their features upon learning of my true self. All but one.

Mr. Green seemed rather preoccupied with his thoughts, though I could hardly blame him after what he would no doubt associate with an extravagance of experimental information just waiting to be explored. I would enlighten him further, sapiently so. "A plenitude of intrinsic knowledge gained lies with one's own acumen. Risks taken, Mr. Green, can be as propitious as the careful hand." I would allow him time to digest my words as I finally fixed my gaze towards the other girl. She had been the one this was all done for, and she should be thankful to have such good friends that were willing to go to such lengths for her.

With a flourish of my hand and an assumed visage of distress, I brushed the girl's question aside before it could do more harm to my augmented ego. "Do you doubt me, child? What, pray tell, would have been the point of this entire hullabaloo if all I intended was failure in the end?" I had no time for childish frovolity. "Drink, should it please you. Toss it, should it not. It matters naught. I am willing to partake in other experiments, should you four find it prudent. This had been most enlightening for me as well." I turned my back to the group then and gathered each vial and in turn distributed them among the four.

"Take them and go." They would work. The girl and anyone who drank the contents would find that they experience the lightening effect for an hour at a time. The potion was still in its prototype phase, after all, and I knew that I would be spending much time in the coming future perfecting it. They had gotten me started, and I would certainly finish. "Oh! A final word, before you go." I looked at them each, in turn, my eyes narrowed menacingly. "Never interrupt another of my lessons." With that, I dismissed them from my classroom and started the cleaning process.

Lorelai wasn't very satisfied with the Professor's response to her earlier questioning. He still really never specified why shifting into a teenage girl would be useful. Why does he care how a bunch of schoolchildren 'conduct themselves'? It didn’t add up in her mind, at least in her mind. However, she wasn't too keen on questioning further, considering the Potions Master had demonstrated his annoyance at her more than once. She was at the very least smart enough to hold her tongue on the matter. She would just be digging her own grave if she were to continue further on. The Professor didn’t seem to like the dark-haired girl, not that he would have liked her if this meeting didn’t happen. She didn’t mix well with uptight people, at least for the most part.

Lorelai listened closely to Professor Valtome as he spoke to Green. The teacher's vocabulary was beyond her years, despite the fact she was pretty well-read. Perhaps the books she was reading weren’t hard enough? She made a mental note to look for something a bit more difficult in the library sometime this week. However, she started to believe that maybe the Professor’s use of impossible vocabulary was just feeding his big ego. Or maybe he was just a genius. Or both. She didn’t know or really care enough to look further into the issue. The girl was irritated by the condescending tone the older male used with Uschi, as she had a growing fondness for the students in their little quest.

Finally, the professor ushered out the students, warning them not to barge in on any of his classes again. Luckily, the girl didn’t plan to. Lorelai waltzed out of the room as fast as she was able, assuming the others would too. She didn’t even bother to say any parting words to the professor. The girl had been waiting to leave ever since she arrived. The whole basement always gave her the creeps. It was times like this where she was really glad she hadn’t been sorted into Slytherin. Then she’d have to come down into this cold dark dungeon every day. She shuddered at the thought.

She was glad that her new friends now had a tool to help her reach her goals. And to add to it, Lorelai wasn’t any less interested in how the potion would work, despite her boredom towards the technical side of the potion. This was going to be rather exciting. She couldn’t wait. But more important than her curiosity, Uschi would finally be able to live a more healthy lifestyle. This journey had proved more useful than she had originally thought it would be. But look how far they had gotten already! They had pretty much invented a potion or at least get someone else to do it for them. To Lorelai at least, that seemed pretty awesome.

Green's brow furrowed as Professor Valtome spoke of 'risks.' He was, of course, correct; there was no way to truly excel at any art unless one was willing to risk failure, no matter how disastrous that failure may prove when it inevitably came to pass. Unconsciously, his hand moved to his belly, which rumbled with disquiet even now; the cost of such risks were palpable to him even now.

Palpable, yes. But not yet prohibitive. Not inconquerably so. "I will keep that in mind, professor. Thank you," he said.

Once Valtome had left, he let out a breath he hadn't known he had been holding, looking at the others. "Well," he began. "It would appear that that much of our endeavor was a success... all that remains is testing it, and finding a way to make enough money that it might be sustainable. It occurs to me that we could likely order the stings, ourselves, in the same way we could order the candy," he rubbed his chin. "Particularly if we can find some valuable potions reagents to sell or trade on the grounds. Running about trying to find them might be a good test for these," he suggested, looking to Uschi with hopeful eyes. "But I will leave that decision to you."

His words had a ring of finality; whether following Uschi at her suggestion, or retreating to his dorm to contemplate the day's events, he would leave shortly.

For the most part, Constantine remained silent. Both Green and Professor Valtome got along like a house on fire, so he wasn't going to interrupt with his significantly simpler vocabulary. Although, he wasn't alone on that front, as Lorelai didn't seem to understand half the things they had been conversing about either. Despite the Professor being rather harsh towards Uschi's question, he wouldn't say anything, not after all he'd done for them. Furthermore, it gave him peace of mind that the potion would indeed work, and not cause anything horrible to happen as an unwanted side effect.

Heeding Professor Valtome's warning, Constantine shot out of the classroom after giving the teacher a polite smile of parting. The last thing he wanted to do was be on his bad side, considering he was already god awful at potions as it were. However, his thoughts about that all but disappeared in a matter of moments. They'd done it! With quite possibly the least amount of trouble, as well. In Constantine's book, it was an undoubted win. The success had made him happy, however he was far more excited for Uschi. Hopefully, once she'd taken the potion, it would make things a lot easier for her.

And maybe, that would lead to even better adventures.
