Her teammate Irina reached forward and grabbed her, sending Vivienne flying forward. Maybe she was going faster than she anticipated, because even though it was a good tactic and got their team farther than the Americans, it also meant Vivienne might've been a tiny bit unprepared for the next obstacle.

Or at least that's what Vivienne was blaming her collision with the thorns on. She winced as she hit them, the pain definitely not very pleasant along with the other scratches and bruises she had already received from her previous collisions. That's not to mention the bundimun acid that still stung a lot.

Still, Vivienne was determined to keep looking on the bright side and so she continued on. Though it ended quickly because the brunette soon found herself tangled in some thick vines that she just couldn't get out of. "Damn it," she muttered to herself in French. Even though she was in the lead, which was a plus, she really was not having a good time right now. Scratched, bruised, burned and bleeding. It certainly wasn't the most pleasant experience ever, but she'd be fine. Hopefully.

XXXAlexi Petrov was in pain, but he wouldn’t tell you that. He had already been sprayed with bundimum acid, and had flown into the side of a passageway. This time he was opting to just fly, but he was flying into everything.

First it was the narrow passageway which he flew directly into, causing him to internally wince at the pain. Then came the thorns. They were so thick he couldn’t avoid them and they caused him to start bleeding out.

Even with thorns in his side and blood coming out of his wounds, Alexi would not give up. Losing was not in his vocabulary and he would make sure it stayed that way at all costs. He was going to win, no question about it.

XXXThe race was on. It had been for some time, yes, this was true, but now? As they approached the finish and Fedya felt his blood coursing through his veins and his breath running out? It was truly on.

They were racing, wind whipping.

Fedya was up to fly again. Lived to fly another day.

Both teams seemed to have recovered from their temporary paralysis and were flying again- what were a bit of burning acid, scratches and splinters from trees anyway, right?

Unit 5

...That meant- every racer but one. One young boy stayed behind, seemingly ready to wait until the race was over.

Irina however shot past her classmate, apparently eager to catch up with the other racers after the unlucky attempt to throw Vivienne. The passageway ahead was no problem for the 5th year.

Both Andrew and Nick were given a real treat- while their teammates and opponents were fighting their way through the race more or less successfully, these Americans got to have a few moments of undisturbed flying. No obstacles, no spells, just flying.

Stephen and Fyodor both reached the thorns together, but while Fyodor seemed rather confident judged by his speed, Stephen seemed to have more respect for this obstacle. It was no matter, both boys came out the other side without a scratch.

Unit 12

Both boys would also reach the vine trap together, that Vivienne had also not managed to get out of yet and were joined by Alexi, who was the only one who had no problems with the vines at all. This time it seemed that Stephen's more careful approach paid off- or perhaps he was simply a little stronger than his opponents. For only a moment it seemed as though he would get stuck like Vivienne, but then he pulled himself free. Fyodor was not as lucky. Neither was Vivienne, who seemed hopelessly tangled in the vines. The young girl would try a different approach using the wand lighting spell, but the plant turned out to be not devil's snare... and as such didn't retreat.
Fyodor also didn't seem to be done with Stephen yet. The boy would reach out to grab a loose branch that was hanging on one of the vines and hurl it in Stephen's direction- well. His direction only.

Unit 13

With his opponents being more careful and his teammates being snared in vines, Alexi managed to take the lead with ease- and perhaps too little care? All of a sudden, the boy would find himself stopping next to an angry Whomping Willow. Before he could even blink, a branch would hit his back.
Despite having been beaten by a tree just a moment ago, Alexi seemed to be able to focus on the task at hand enough to cast the ascension spell at Fyodor (Autosuccess).
Fyodor would fly higher and higher, out of the vines' grip.

This wasn't too bad. Drew had a couple of rough rounds, but he was able to pull up. He wasn't in last place, and he was actually doing alright. There was a lack of obstacles for a small stretch of the race, and he used that to level his thoughts. He was ready for whatever came at him next in this race.

XXXWhile, yes, there was blood seeping from Alexi's body, coursing down his dirty skin, he never gave up. Ever.

First off, he had made it further than his competitors and teammates alike. As he sailed forward, ahead of everyone else, he laughed, glancing back at those behind him with perhaps too little forethought.

The Womping Willow caused Alexi to howl in pain, and he was down for the count. Even so, Alexi wasn't one to quit. He raised his wand and began to raise Fyodor from the vines that ensnared him, hopeful that the small boy would avenge him with a quick flight and twisting evasion.

XXXIlvermorny students were really starting to bite at Fedya's nerves. He was flying, sailing, soaring, when that Stephen whatever started passing by. He successfully flew past the vines, avoiding the fate that the other students had gotten themselves stuck in, and Fedya couldn't let that happen.

He flung a vine to ensnare Stephen and stop him, a last resort that turned out to be quite beneficial.

Then, as he watched Alexi fly forward and get shot down, he grinned as he was lifted up by the boy. Sweet, sweet victory was in sight.

Irina quickly needed to catch up with the rest of her team and the other players. She was set about flying as fast as her broom could go, but it was times like these where she wished her broom could fly faster. The tree brooms at Koldovstoretz were much better than the silver arrow she was riding, however, almost everyone else thought that the silver arrow was the superior broom.

Flying fast through a narrow passage and a long stretch of empty space, Irina grinned as she passed two of her opponents. Slowly but surely, they were winning this race.

Stephen's blood was pumping now! The game had gotten incredibly exciting. Both from a terrain aspect, of course, but also from the perspective of player dynamics.

Stephen was well aware that the most treacherous parts of the course were bunched together and just ahead. Team Ilvermorny was not in the lead any longer, but they were definitely not far behind. His heart still beat with hope and his brain told him victory was still within their grasp if they played it smart and flew with great precision.

And that is just what he did when it came to the thorns and the vines. Stephen came through both unscathed. The one benefit, if it could be called such, to the opponents being ahead is that their mishaps with the course obstacles served as lessons to learn by, so he did. He took no joy in the frustration the Beauxbaton racer was now undergoing with the vines, but he was glad of the opportunity it afforded him and his team.

He also found great amusement in the smug look that the racer flying alongside him into the last two units seemed to have when he threw something at Stephen - and missed. The racer was himself caught up in the vines, not Stephen, but Stephen's amusement was short-lived as that same racer was magically ascending above the vines, and even more importantly, all the obstacles in the next units ahead.

Well now. That could be a game changer.

Looking ahead to the leading racer who took a powerful hit from the Whomping Willow, Stephen winced knowing that had to hurt like nobody's business. His compassion did not extend so far, however, as to wish the Whomping Willow had not grasped him just a few seconds before he had successfully cast the Ascension spell.

Ever the optimist, Stephen still held out hope, but the odds did not seem to be in their favor. Still, if they managed to pull it off, what a fantastic David vs Goliath story they would have to tell the folks back home.
