He really ought to find a more efficient path to walk between his classes, the Great Hall, the quidditch pitch, and the Rehearsal Room. Those were the places that he frequented the most during his time at Hogwarts. All that walking -- back and forth on his short legs -- was quite a time-killer for our small boy, who was often found carrying not only his books, but a violin case.

Perhaps, today was the day that he would find a useful shortcut to get to class. Instead of heading out of the Slytherin Common Room and turning his usual way... what if he turned the other way? And went through the dungeons, instead? It was definitely a route to try, and he still had time before he was supposed to be in class. The perfect opportunity.

As he pushed open the common room door, he turned and headed down a dark corridor. The flaming torches down here were sparse, just enough to see where one was stepping, and there was no additional light from windows down here. He was somewhat familiar with the twists and turns, but had admittedly not used these corridors very much. There was a certain dampness down here, and the darkness wasn't what he preferred, but after a year of living under a lake, he had admittedly gotten used to it. In fact, the darkness almost seemed like a quiet friend that calmed him.

He hummed absent-mindedly. Just a random Czerny sonata that wasn't particularly catchy, but one he had played many times on his violin over the past week. All of a sudden, a breeze blew past. The flaming torches flickered a little. Was the charm that kept them lit expiring? Avery shrugged, but went upon his merry way and kept walking. Whatever.

Interacting with @Avery Chen
Emmie had chosen a rather strange route to spend her time. Instead of just walking through the Great Hall or simply reading books in the Library, she walked down to the dungeons and decided to explore there.

Bad idea.

She had been wandering in the dungeons for a couple of minutes and still hasn’t found her way out. As she walked aimlessly through corridors after corridors, beads of sweat appeared on her forehead and dripped down. The young girl was worried about talking to other students. Emmie is quite uncomfortable speaking with others. She prefers keeping her emotions to herself instead of expressing them. So naturally, the seems to be quite cold, with no emotions whatsoever. But when she took of the mask of a girl emotionless, strong, and cold, there would be a first year who is delicate, emotional, and tender.

Emmie pulled out a book from her bag. She opened it and read the book, occasionally writing notes with a quill. She longed to be near the ocean, picking shells and catching fish. The waves washing her feet and soothing the blisters, the salty sea air and blue sky with seagulls flying above, squawking as they went. All so beautiful.

He continued to hum cheerily, letting the soft notes echo through the dark walls of the dungeon. Whereas the dark had seemed a little oppressive during his first year at Hogwarts, a year had been enough for him to acclimate. The small boy had found himself to be more adaptive to the strangeness and quirks of the magical world than he had expected. What had seemed eerie last year was now rather familiar. And that familiarity bred comfort. Gradually, Hogwarts had become his home.

He did not expect to see what he did when he turned a corner. There was a young girl in the middle of the corridor, reading a book and scribbling away with a quill. She had a sense of tranquility about her that was a bit at odds with the dimness of her surroundings; it seemed as if she was transported into a different world through her book and her imagination.

But why was she reading down here? It was really not his first reading environment of choice. Quite odd.

His humming paused, and Avery regarded her curiously as he approached, hugging the violin case he was carrying as he stopped near where she was reading. "I didn't think the dungeon would be a good place to read a book," he mused out loud. "Is it a new trend that I haven't picked up on?" he chuckled good-naturedly.

"I'm Avery Chen, by the way," he said, introducing himself. "Slytherin, second-year. What about you?"

Emmie had been thinking about the ocean while absentmindedly reading the book when a boy came up and talked. "I didn't think the dungeon would be a good place to read a book," he said to her,"Is it a new trend that I haven't picked up on?" he chuckled. "I'm Avery Chen, by the way," he said after a moment. "Slytherin, second-year. What about you?"

The girl looked up, her cold black eyes observing the short-but-still-much-taller-than-she-is boy in front of her. A mop of black hair sat on his head, dark brown eyes and a big grin, a grin too big that it must meant mischief.

Finally, “Emmie Bailey, First Year, Ravenclaw.” she introduced herself. Her black eyes now gazing at the violin case on Avery’s hand. “And anyways why don’t you mind your own business, it is perfectly fine to read a book in the dungeons or whatever place.” she said, putting her hands into the pockets of her jacket and took a step back, enduring her distance between the Slytherin boy. Snapping her boom shut and stuffing her quill back in her bag, she turned and walked away.

“Emmie Bailey, First Year, Ravenclaw.” The words were terse and straight-forward. Hardly any emotion showed through the girl's dark eyes as she observed him and the violin case he was carrying. It was as if she was assessing him and taking mental notes that Avery didn't even know about himself. How peculiar.

“And anyways why don’t you mind your own business, it is perfectly fine to read a book in the dungeons or whatever place.” With that, the girl shoved her book into her bag and walked away. Avery stared for a second, not quite registering what had just happened, as he was left standing there in the middle of the dim corridor. Did this little first-year seriously just give him attitude and walk away from him? Would he allow that? No, for sure, our proud Slytherin boy would not.

He scoffed a little and followed in the same direction until he kept pace with her footsteps, even though he had no idea where she was going. "You do know that odd creatures lurk in the dungeons, right?" he began, adding a bit of mystery and intrigue into his tone as he spoke of the stories he had heard. "Tales of hags invading Hogwarts in the past few years... Even thought we haven't heard from them awhile now, we don't know what they're planning... Shadow spiders that curse students, so that dark webs begin to spread on their skin, and the victims have to take a potion every day to stem the poison..." These were certainly the tales that the upperclassmen had told him, last year. Even though Avery didn't know it, one of his older friends (Samantha Salwis) had the Shadow Spider Curse herself.

"So, does the dungeon still seem like a good place to read?" he asked mischievously, wondering how the first-year would respond. He wouldn't mind giving the Ravenclaw a little scare. "Maybe you should be careful. The dungeons might not be as kind to eagles as much as it is to us snakes."

Emmie walked on ignoring the boy who is following her and blabbing about strange creatures and hags. "You do know that odd creatures lurk in the dungeons, right?" he said, mysteriously. The girl rolled her eyes, “From what I know, the only creature who is a pain in the neck and lurking in the dungeons is you. I don’t care if you are a second year or what.” she scoffed.

"So, does the dungeon still seem like a good place to read?" the boy asked mischievously after a few moments."Maybe you should be careful. The dungeons might not be as kind to eagles as much as it is to us snakes."

“For your information, there are no such thing as hags written in books about Hogwarts Castle, so don’t try to scare me with these stupid stuff.” She walked briskly away, “And if you’ll excuse me, I have to go to potions class in ten minutes.”

“From what I know, the only creature who is a pain in the neck and lurking in the dungeons is you. I don’t care if you are a second year or what.”

Avery clutched his chest dramatically, as if he had been shot in the heart by her words. Emmie Bailey's words were cold (and true, even though Avery would not admit it), and -- much to Avery's disappointment -- she did not seem vexed at all. She might very well have been suited for the House of Gryffindor, too. This girl seemed to have guts and her wits about her, with no regard for those wicked hags or poisonous shadow spiders. Indeed, the only sound within the dungeons right now was the pitter-patter of both their footsteps and the occasional dripping of water into little pools on the dungeon floor, and surely no hags or spiders were lurking now.

"Oh, Emmie, you have no idea who you're talking to, do you?" he drawled, stifling a fake yawn with one hand. The poor girl was merely a freshman, and obviously did not know her seniors well enough to show them the proper respect. He was Avery Chen for goodness sake: Voted Slytherin Boy of the Year in Slytherin's yearbook during his first year at Hogwarts, and a quidditch player for the Slytherin team. And for those reasons, our small boy thought quite highly of himself, perhaps too much that his head was a bit big today. "Maybe you should show your upperclassmen some proper respect if you ever wanted to learn a thing or two. That attitude isn’t going to get you too far."

And what was that? Emmie had potions class in ten minutes? He paused for a bit and looked around to get his bearings. Were they anywhere near the potions classroom, or even headed towards it? A question immediately struck him. "Do you know where you're going?" he asked, tilting his head slightly to the side, smiling in amusement.

“Drama Queens.” the girl muttered watching Avery fake his own death. She wasn’t at all surprised by the the boy’s personality. After all, he is a Slytherin.

“I don’t exactly find you as an upper classman you know.” She fired back, “Merely a snobbish boy who thinks he is the king because he had been voted Slytherin of the year and a quidditch player on the Slytherin team, but apparently not. No wonder your head is that big.”

"Do you know where you're going?" he asked suddenly. Emmie was very sure that she is not sure of where she’s going, but still, “Of course not. I could ask someone how to go there.” she replied, looking at some students near them, “And if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and ask them to tell me the way to class.” With that, she skipped off towards the older students.

Emmie was clearly not impressed, her words stern and blunt. Once again the boy felt he had gotten shot in the heart. Aahhhh, all this hard work and no recognition at all! What had it all been for! Of course, it didn't take any particular skill to get voted Slytherin Boy of the Year, nor was he even a first-string player on the quidditch team, and only second-string, but these fine details seemed to escape our dear boy at the moment. It was merely a fault of his proud and attention-seeking nature.

He paused as Emmie revealed that she, in fact, did not know where she was going. This admission was quite unexpected, since he had originally thought that the girl was purely stone-cold and immovable to admitting any vulnerability. However, he was somehow caught off-guard by her confidence and maturity, and with some appreciation for these qualities of hers, he figured that providing some direction was the least he could do. After all, she had humored him and his theatrics enough (unwillingly). "Well, if you turn left at the corner and walk halfway down the corridor, you'll see the potions classroom to your right," he said with a shrug. It took no effort to give her directions, he figured, and surely he would prove more useful than some other random upperclassman.

With that, he turned on his heels, swinging his violin case the other way, towards his Charms class. "Enjoy potions! Hopefully I'll catch you reading at your favorite reading spot again!" he teased, lifting a hand in the air to bid farewell, knowing full well that she probably hoped to never see him again.
