Alma smiled at Finn as she took the coins back and sat in her seat again.

“Yeah, my Ma had a couple extra sickles left and decided to give them to me for sweets.”

She sat back and finally relaxed in her seat as she listened to Finn and Maggie chat about something that went down between her and a stranger named Bubba McGarry. It seemed to have happened during Hogwarts summer camp. It’s a shame Alma didn’t attend the summer camp, it sounded loads fun! Everyone was talking about activities like truth or dare and twirl the flaggon. Alma had never attended a summer camp before; much less a magic one!

She suddenly heard footsteps clamoring down the hall and she assumed another person was looking for a compartment. They were cutting it quite close, the train was about to take off!

The girl, a first-year, (or what Alma assumed was a first year), with thick red hair and dark brown eyes appeared at the compartment door, asking to sit down.

Alma smiled warmly at her and nodded, she seemed like a sweet girl. She hoped the other two were alright with adding another person to the space.

“What’s your name?” she asked, feeling bold now that she had gotten comfortable. The air in the stall space felt less tense than before. There was a sort of calm, collected feel now. She wasn’t nearly as full of anxiety as she was before.

Until, of course, what happened next.

Everything was fine until Alma heard someone running down the train hall. She prepared herself for another person joining their car, seeing as it was already so late all the other compartments had most likely filled by now. It wasn’t a shock to her when the door swung open, and she put on a smile, ready to greet the newcomer.

What she didn’t expect, was none other than her friend Colin rushing into the compartment, tears streaming down his face.

Alma started to panic. What was he upset about? What could have happened? She noticed a letter had fallen to the floor when he had rushed in, and Alma knelt down to pick it up. She didn’t want to read it- perhaps it was personal, but…

She couldn’t help herself. Maybe it had something to do with why in the world her friend would be acting like this. Still kneeling, she read the letter carefully.

Dear Mr. McCoire, we regret to inform you…

Oh no. Alma felt tears prick at her eyes as she read the rest of the owl, beginning to understand the situation. She was a very sensitive and empathetic person, she couldn’t stand to see any of her friends cry. Looking back to Colin’s shaking form, her heart shattered into a million pieces.

Sitting up, she reached for Colin and pulled him into a tight hug. “Colin…i’m so sorry, I-…” she didn’t know what to say.

She began gathering all of the things Colin had dropped in the compartment; his letters, satchel, shoes. She stood up and got ready to rush Colin to a different compartment; she couldn’t have him sobbing in front of a room full of strangers!

“Um, i’m going to take him to an empty seat…” she said, turning awkwardly to the rest of the people in the room. “Have fun! I’ll see you when we arrive!” she smiled shakily and carefully lead Colin to a (hopefully) empty part of the train.

Maggie's answer only raised more questions. What nasty stuff had Bubba said? Who was Maggie's best friend? There had to be more to the story, but everything about Maggie's posture screamed that she was done talking. Besides, he didn't think it very smart to push her. Unlike him, she had a wand she knew how to use, and he had no ambition of spending the rest of his days living like a newt or a toad. By her own admission, Maggie wasn't the type to let perceived slights against her or her friends fly.

Mercifully the silence threatening to loom over them once again was broken by the arrival of a ginger girl who hid her nerves far better than Alma but still was clearly anxious."For sure," Finnegan answered. He didn't mind the company. Maggie didn't seem particularly keen on having conversations with lowly firsties, and he knew that he'd have to do most of the talking with Alma. A fourth wheel was more than welcome, even if it did mean that girls surrounded him.

Before he could feel either pride or despair at noticing that all his traveling companions were girls, another familiar face barrelled into the compartment. Well, not a face, more a blur of black and green and hot tears and- bare feet?

Colin had been something of a strange apparition from the moment he'd first met him. The boy's overexcited nature combined with his unfathomable desire to wear a neck collar, like he was someone's escaped pet dog, had irritated him the first time around. For the odd boy to now stumble into his train compartment, crying, and taking his shoes and socks off for no apparent reason whatsoever...

Alma got to Colin first. It was probably a good thing because he'd almost said several things that he knew he would come to regret. Instead, he eyed Colin, unsure whether he ought to feel sad for the boy (the crying did seem genuine) or irritated that Colin had just barged in like the emotional shipwreck he was.

Finnegan waited until he was sure that Colin and Alma were well out of earshot before he slumped back into his seat. "I don't know what got into him," he muttered. "It wasn't anything we did, was it?"

He was already crying when he came in. It has to be something else.

"That's Colin, he's a bit... odd. I met him at the Leaky Cauldron, actually, and Alma too. Colin got very excited about a pencil," Finnegan chuckled. "It was kind of annoying actually. I'm not sure he's... you know," he lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "quite right in the head. Bit unstable, if you know what I mean. Who wears kilts anyway? I wouldn't want to be caught dead in one." He glanced between Maggie and Lilly before settling on the latter and offering a quick handshake. "I'm Finn, that there is Maggie, she stole my newspaper, and you are?"

Dear reader,
September 1, 2022
xxxxxxxxThere was nothing like Hogwarts drama. The beginning of the year yielded disastrous results, often. Not for Maggie, of course, but for most other people. Maggie was doing great thus far.

Colin McCoire did not fare so well. First off, Maggie really did find it quite embarrassing to run into a random compartment sobbing. Sure, you couldn't really help your emotions, but you could probably help running into a compartment with a million other people and making it everyone's problem. That was just the second year's perspective, of course, and there were a million ways to take and understand different perspectives, but judging by the look on the faces of the others, they probably agreed.

The second the papers hit the ground, Maggie was turning her face right to hide in the soft fabric of her robes, shielding her from the prying eyes of the outside world. After all, it would look pretty bad if anyone caught sight of her giggling about the situation in her school-issued clothes.

Alma Stoll followed Colin out of the compartment, no doubt to shower him with 'it's okay, Colin' and 'what's wrong, Colin?'. Maggie was, suffice to say, not a fan. She looked up at Finn, smirk cracking her face, and gestured towards the now open door of the compartment. "I mean, he sure made an impression," she pointed out, watching as the girl who had been sitting beside her also vacated the compartment. Perhaps she was overwhelmed by Colin's actions. Perhaps she didn't like how Maggie laughed.

Maybe they all smelled bad. "Honestly, that's kinda embarrassing. A kilt and sobbing to a bunch of random kids? I mean, really?"
