But Does it Hurt the Beetles?
The question was still very much prevelant in the mind of young Maverick Lysander, who had the side of his head resting on his desk in order to get a look at the insect that was scurrying along his desk. One hand was cupped around the lip, attempting to ensure the insect was safe from falling off. The beetle would occasionally bumble it’s way against Maverick’s palm, the sensation almost ticklish before it turned and started off in then opposite direction. His assignment was rather simple-turn the beetle into a button, as his neighbor had already done without hesitation. His own wand, however, was still resting innocently atop his desk, not far from where the beetle was scurrying.
He pulled his hands away to cold them beneath his chin, spectacled eyes appearing almost comically large as he watched the big explore. “So, how exactly did you get here?” He whispered. “Maybe you were just minding your own buisiness out near the grounds when the professor scooped you up. That must have been very disorientating.”
After the decidedly one-sided conversation, mostly due to the fact that his partner was a bug, Maverick sat up. Still frowining somewhat, he cleared his throat and leaned over to speak to the student sitting next to him.
“Odd question, but in your opinion, would it hurt the bug? Being turned into an inanimate object, I mean.”

She turned hear head to the boy next to her and observed him for a short while. That was an extremely good question. Angela had similar thoughts herself.
I don't... know, she responded slowly. You can always transfigure it back, right? She paused for a moment, deep in thoughts. But on the other hand... If it was harmless, we could for example transfigure people too... Like we do with animals.
How would it feel to be transfigured into, say, a chair, and back? It sounded incompherensible.
Or maybe only sentient creatures can be harmed by that? She frowned, contemplating this concept. Certainly small animals that they were supposed to transfigure into goblets during the other class were at least a bit sentient. And another class was about transforming things into birds... It was literally creating life. Do the birds remember the experience of being objects? How do they behave? Are they even... real birds?
It was all so confusing. She stared at the beetle like it had all the responses somewhere within. You know... maybe we should ask the professor... this is complicated. She raised her hand. Um... excuse me, Professor? Can I ask you a question?
I owled the professor. If he doesn't respond, we shall proceed on our own.

But Does it Hurt the Beetles?
He’d been expecting a relatively short answer, and was pleasantly surprised to see the girl actually pause a moment to think. Unfortunately, however, she seemed to have no better of an idea of the answer than he did, and they were both left with no defenite response. In fact, she even brought up her own very good points.
Maverick frowned, looking back at the beetle still crawling along its way. “Well, if I were a beetle,” he said thoughtfully, “And I’d been scooped up by some giant person I didn’t know, and then brought here, and then spent the rest of my life as an inanimate object, I think I’d have a pretty awful time. So, the last thing I’d want would be to make things worse.” Maverick rested his hand flat on the desk, allowing the bug to come closer and investigate the tips of his fingers.
“But then again, I suppose we’re expected anyway. So, I guess we don’t have very much choice in the matter.” He gave a small sigh before looking over at the fair-haired girl on his right, summoning a slightly crooked smile. “Say, I reckon I saw you at the feast a few days ago. My name’s Maverick.”
