Seren was quietly walking towards the area that Care of Magical Creatures took place in. She KNEW she was not allowed in the classes, as a First Year, but she thought she could at least get a chance to look at some of the animals! She knew they were kept in the stable, but she had not gone out this way, at all, so she had hopes that she could, at the very least, peek in the windows. She had made sure her lovely Electra was comfy in a basket back in Ravenclaw Tower, because she did not want to take a chance of an incident between her young cat and any of the magical animals kept out here for students to learn about.

She was, however, trying to avoid attention. Not because she was trying to avoid trouble (She did not think she was doing anything wrong, so she did not think she would need to do anything on that level...) But to avoid potentially bumping into someone and bothering them, or something of that nature. Or maybe to avoid a chance of meeting a bully. She had not met any as yet, but she was SURE some where out there. Her parents had very specifically told her stories of what the bullies would do to her, at Hogwarts, in an attempt to convince her to NOT attend.

When she got up to the stables and saw how high the windows, were, however, the slender young woman gave a soft gasp of dismay. She would NEVER be able to get high enough to see inside them, even if she was not already terrified of heights to begin with. She stared, disappointed and with a mildly mournful expression on her face, and she ran her fingers along her braid, currently colored a dark red, as she tried to decide what to do.

Finally, she began to wander along the wall, hoping against hope to find a crack or a small hole she could just peek in through. She did not want to cause trouble, not at all! She just... She just wanted to see something, anything, that she had never had the chance to see before.

Friday after classes, that would mean a week's work's done. Technically, at least. Marius Brown still had some assignments to write, but the boy decided it could wait for a few hours. His last class of the week finished at four, and usually he had dinner at six, so he planned to take a break for the two hours in-between; one and a half hours if the restful warm shower at half past five was counted. Homework would be after supper.

Before going to his after-lunch classes, Marius had prepared several breadcrumbs so he could directly go to the Care of Magical Creatures area and feed the little wild birds. Now that the class was done, without changing his uniform, the Hufflepuff immediately went to feed the birds.

When the Chinese-English boy arrived, another pupil was already there, or at least he automatically guessed she was. It was a preteen girl with red braid whom he had never talked to before, and Marius was not much interested in changing that. If she initiated a chat with him, he would answer her friendlily; but if she did not, he would not mind it, either.

Paying no more attention to the redhead, at least for the moment, the Hufflepuff began to cast his soft brown eyes to the trees, searching for some birds. Under one that had quite a number of them, he spread some of the breadcrumbs.

Seren turned, her expression one of disappointment at not finding anything exciting so far, and stopped, seeing another student nearby. The Korean-Welsh girl tilted her head, watching him silently. She was... Nervous, because she did not know him, not at all, but at the same time, he was out here near the Stables as well, and he was being quiet and calm... And as she watched, she was very confused by whatever it was he was doing. He was inspecting the trees?

Why was he inspecting the trees?

She quietly began to move nearer, her expression showing open curiosity (since he was not paying her any mind, she felt safe enough to let her emotions show on her face.) Finally, as he began to spread... Something... Out under a tree, she stopped. She was close enough to see what he was doing, and speak without yelling, and yet... She still could not figure out what the older boy was up to. Her expression grew more and more confused as she watched him, until finally, her curiosity overwhelming her instinctive fear of strangers.

She said, just loudly enough to be heard but no so loudly as to startle him (She hoped, startling people could have bad consequences for her, after all.) "What are you doing there, and why?" Her tone was incredibly shy and filled with just a frisson of fear, but also spoke volumes about how curious she was.

The first year lifted up his head when he heard someone speaking, seemingly to him. His soft brown eyes caught her bluish-green and Marius flashed a friendly smile for the timid-looking girl. Even her voice sounded full of shyness, and he did not want to scare her further.

"I'm feeding the birds with these bread crumbs," he replied. "Look, here comes a bluebreast. And a robin redbreast." The Hufflepuff smiled widely at the sight. More birds were coming, and he spread more crumbs. Some chirped, some jumped, and Marius thought they were very cute and appealing. Nature was a masterpiece, a beautiful art masterpiece.

After some time, the Chinese-English preteen turned his attention back to the redhead in front of him. Red hair that did not look natural, blue (rather green) eyes, a naive-looking face; she might as well be a first year just like he himself. But why did she look so scared? Maybe it was his imagination, but he thought he saw her trembling. What was she so afraid of?

At first, Marius decided that this would not be such an appropriate thing to ask someone he had just met. But on second thought, did people not ask such thing when they were sure?

"Are you all right?" he finally made up his mind to ask this question.

His response made her smile... And the sight of the birds, ones she had never seen before, had her eyes going ever wider, clearly looking like she was delighted and perhaps a little oddly amazed. They darted back and forth between the birds that were approaching, and Marius with his bread crumbs. After a long moment of this, she slowly turned her head so that she could look fully at him again, as if she was worried she might scare the birds if she moved more than that, she whispered "I had no idea you could feed wild birds like this. I have never seen anyone do that before."

She was continuing to watch, and then he asked that question, and she froze, wondering what she had done wrong, that he THOUGHT she might not be all right.

She tilted her head, her expression going carefully blank, as if she was trying to hide any emotions she might be feeling in the moment, and she watched him for a long moment. Finally, she said, in an extremely polite tone, "I am fine, thank you. My apologies if I have done anything to offend you or have behaved in any way that was untoward. It was decidedly not my intent."

There, that should make up for any mistake she had made, or at least so she thought. It never occurred to her that he was honestly expressing concern, but the only signs she really showed of the anxiety she was feeling, now, was tightness around her eyes and that suddenly stiff posture.

At this point, Marius felt bad. The redhead had seemed to relax quite a bit, but what he asked made her tense once again. Maybe it was too personal, or perhaps she was the type of person who got nervous at mere nothing. In a split of second, Marius decided not to apologise, afraid it would draw an even more panicky response from this fellow.

Thus, instead of directly telling the other preteen she had not offended him at all, the Hufflepuff handed her the plastic bag full of bread crumbs. "Would you like to feed them?" he offered. "I have a lot and I have done this often, so don't worry; I won't miss anything."

After a slight pause, he added, "Besides, the most important things would be that someone feeds them and, for my own pleasure, that I can see the little birds. If you'd like to, spread them little by little. Such little birds have such little tummies; they may get full faster than we predict. But if we have spread too many crumbs and the birds don't eat them, it would be a waste of the bread. So better make sure we give them just the right amount, and the rest we can give to the other birds by the Great Lake."

She sat, tense and nervous, after her worries about having offended the young man. She watched him, trying to hide the fear she was feeling at messing up. When he spoke, her expression went very confused at the way he just did not respond. How was she to interpret that? She did not know, and part of her was worried he was just humoring her now. But at the same time... He seemed to be kind, and willing to let whatever it was she had done go, so perhaps she had misunderstood what his words had meant?

She blinked, taking the bag... And looking at it in confusion. What on earth was this bag made of? She had never felt a material like this before, but it was clear and held the bread crumbs. She wanted to ask, but she was concerned that she might offend him when he was being so nice.

"Oh... Thank you..." She softly replied and stared into the bag a little more, before she carefully reached inside and grabbed out some... Not a handful, but more than a pinch, certainly. She carefully, gently tossed the crumbs, trying to get them out to the various birds. For a moment, she thought they weren't going to eat them, and her face started to fall... And then the birds started eating, and her expression brightened into a beaming smile of delight as she watched the birds eat the crumbs she had tossed out. "Ohhhh... This... I love that they will eat the food we give them... Thank you again... Um."

She paused, frowned a little and realized she had not introduced herself, and nor had he. "I am Seren Yong. W... Would you mind telling me your name?"

Marius smiled pleasantly as the redhead feed the birds, looking happy and very much in awe as they came and enjoyed the breadcrumbs. Secretly, hoping that she would not notice, he observed her, almost like a detective observing a suspect, or a scientist observing an experimental subject. However, he took almost no notice of her red braid or her height; rather, inwardly he took notes of things he gathered from this girl that may be useful for conducting a positive interaction with her.

Very shy and polite, the Hufflepuff started from the easiest point. Seems to be constantly afraid of making the other party uncomfortable, perhaps in fear of being attacked herself. May have a history of being bullied, be it physically or mentally or both. Maybe that's why she's more comfortable around animals rather than humans, animals can't hurt your mental on purpose. Also, perhaps this means she's very sensitive.

His analysing mind was interrupted by the girl's voice introducing herself and asking his name. Marius gave her a friendly smile and answered, "Brown. Marius Brown. Well, it's nice meeting you, Seren." And then, after a slight pause, "Would you like to try feeding the birds by the Great Lake as well? After the ones here are full, we can feed more birdies if you'd like to."

Seren continued to watch the birds, soft delight in her eyes as they stayed far closer to her than she had ever been to a bird that was not a Mail Owl. The way they moved was both familiar, thanks to the owls, and yet also very unfamiliar. They were so very different from each other, these birds and the owls. They were so much smaller, and while they both flew and hopped, the owls seemed to more deliberate and determined in their motions, while these little guys seemed to move and flutter from spot to spot with far more careless abandon. It was so interesting to see the differences, and she could probably have gotten lost in her observations for hours if she had been alone.

But she was not, and as such, she was unable to help herself from watching him out of the corner of her eye. She was appreciative of how calm and gentle he seemed, at least, but she could not help but wonder what was going on in his mind.

One never knew.

"It's a pleasure to meet you as w...well, Marius... And yes. Yes! That would be nice. Do you see different birds at the lake?" The question was asked with the honest innocence of someone who had no real knowledge of the details, but the earnest interest of someone who did care. She smiled, a little, as she imagined what could be different. Perhaps they would feed ducks there?"

So her name was Seren. Well, her given name, that is. Surname, Yong. Marius guessed it must be a variant of Yang, the Mandarin version he was familiar with. But whether it was in a Chinese dialect (such as Hokkien or Cantonese) or an adaptation into another language, the boy knew not.

He predicted she was a fellow first year, but her jumpy attitude reminded him of his younger brother instead; Max was only six though, and there was no way a child his age attended Hogwarts.

But she seemed to be more relaxed at the moment, after several minutes of exchanging conversation with the Hufflepuff and joining him in feeding the birds; she even asked him if there were different species of birds by the Great Lake for them to feed.

"Maybe not entirely different form the ones here," he admitted, "but I reckon there are some there that we don't see here right now. If I remember correctly, some even mentioned they'd seen a heron there. I haven't, though, so they must be rather rare to spot!"

Shifting his vision to the sky, he called the other pupil enthusiastically, "Shall we go to the lake? I think it's better to get there and feed the birds before it gets too dark. Come, we may even spot a heron or two!"
