September 13

Here she sat, yet again at the library. Alma was mesmerized with this place! It was bigger than any library she had seen back home, and to reiterate her point from the last time she was here: it was magic!

She sat at one of the long tables in the middle of the hall and read her newest book: Tales of Beedle the Bard. She had gotten it just a few days ago with her new Hufflepuff friend, Oliver! She really was proud of herself for being confident enough to ask him for help.

In fact, she was proud of herself for loads of things that had happened in the past few months! She went outside to talk to Alex outside Flourish and Blotts, she asked to enter the train compartment with Maggie, Colin, Finn, and Lilly, and she walked straight up to EmmaLee at the Hufflepuff table all by herself!

Her ‘new school’ anxiety was getting easier and easier to conquer by each week. The classes here weren’t even hard! Charms was a breeze, (it being her favorite class), Potions was another easy one, and Defense Against the Dark Arts was a piece of cake for Alma!

She had already done all of her homework for the day. She considered this down-time a reward for completing all of it so fast. Normally, she would draw but due to her pencil being mysteriously stolen, (she assumed by Colin and his curiosity for all-things Muggle), she decided it couldn’t hurt to read for a while.

She flipped another page in her book as she reached a new chapter: Babbity Rabbity and her Cackling Stump. She giggled a bit at the name and tucked a loose hair behind her ear, excited to read this one.

So far, Jack had been avoiding the library at all costs. Not that it had been very hard, he had no reason to visit. Or at least no good reason. Should he have spent some time there researching for his classes? Probably. But the effort to reward ratio wasn’t looking very good in his opinion.

Despite that, here he was. Not on his own accord of course. He was on a mission to retrieve a book for his friend Lilly. She was busy studying and Jack had nothing better to do. He saw it as a good opportunity to explore a little.

He had to admit the place was pretty, though that’s honestly what one is to expect from any kind of room in a castle like Hogwarts. It was large and lit up by massive windows that lined one of the walls. The wooden bookshelves towered over him like skyscrapers and they were all filled to the brim with a seemingly infinite amount of books. As cool as that is aesthetically, how was he supposed to find anything? He decided that it would be best to ask someone for help.

Surprisingly, not many people were around. In fact, the only person in sight was a Hufflepuff girl. She sat all by herself at one of the tables right in the center of the room. She looked to be about the same age as him. At first he was a bit hesitant to approach. Girls intimidated him, especially pretty ones. But after gathering some courage he walked over to her table.

”Excuse me? Would you mind helping me out?” He waited a couple seconds to give her time to react before continuing “I don’t quite know how to navigate this place. Do you have any idea where I can find One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi? Written by Phyllida Spore.” He searched his pockets for the note Lilly had written to double check, but to no avail. He must have dropped it somewhere. “I think.”

Excuse me?

Alma looked up from her book at the new voice. It nearly startled her; she didn’t notice anyone else in the library with her before.

The voice belonged to a young Slytherin boy. Around her height, dark hair, and looked like another first year.

Do you have any idea where I can find One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi?

Wracking her brain, she tried to think of where she had heard of that book before. Oh right! Now she remembered. Her Ma told her about that book, a required reading for first-years when she was young.

“Yeah- that must be in the Herbology section! Here, right this way.”

She bookmarked the page in her chapter and stood up. She instinctively reached for the boy’s hand to guide him to the Herbology segment of the library, but immediately decided against it as she pulled her hand away and brought her arms to her chest; a light pink now dusting her face.

Ignoring the awkward interaction, she began walking ahead of him, hoping he was following behind. It was a little ways away from the table she was sitting at, which made for some noisy train of thought.

This library is so huge. This boy didn’t seem like the ‘reading’ type. Perhaps he needed this book for studying? Why is this walk so long? Did I really try to hold his hand? That was embarrassing. He was a slytherin. Did he know any of her other Slytherin friends?

She shook the many thoughts out of her head as they finally reached the Herbology section. She looked at every aisle until she found the ‘R-S’ names. Running her finger along the smooth wood of the shelves, she eventually ran into Spore, and that’s where she found the book he was looking for.

She grabbed it off the shelf and dusted it off quickly, admiring the green and gold cover before holding it out to the boy.

“Here you go.” she offered a shaky smile.

Jack was in luck. The girl seemed to know exactly where to find One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi. Now that he thought about it, it made a lot of sense that a book about Herbology would be in the Herbology section. But to his defense he barely even knew that such a section existed.

Right as they were about to go look for the book, the girl made a motion to grab his hand. But she must have changed her mind because less than a second later her arm was back by her side. It had caught Jack completely off guard. When he noticed that she was blushing, he did too. Luckily she began walking away before the situation had time to become even more embarrassing. Jack hurriedly tailed after her.

The Herbology section was unexpectedly far away. How big could one library possibly be? As they walked, Jack wondered if he should start a conversation to break the ice. But for once in his life he couldn’t think of anything good to say. Why did things like this always have to happen at such inconvenient times? He didn’t know why but he really wanted to leave a good impression.

When they finally arrived at the correct section, the girl began searching the shelves. She found what she was looking for impressively quickly. “Thank you.” Jack said with a smile when she handed him the book. In Jack’s mind, reading automatically meant you were boring, and he didn’t want this girl to think that about him. So he quickly added “It’s for my friend, Lilly, maybe you know her. She’s a hufflepuff too. Always studying and reading.” He rolled his eyes. “You’d never catch me dead reading about a thousand magical fungi, whatever that even means” He proudly crossed his arms.

It was now that she was holding the book out to him that Alma really got a moment to study the boy. He was skinny, with pale skin and light freckles dotting his cheeks. She might even say he was cute (even if she’d never say it out loud.) She could tell she had a bit of a staring problem right now, but she couldn’t really care at the moment.

He began talking about his friend Lilly; another Hufflepuff girl. Thinking about it now, she had met a first-year Hufflepuff named Lilly.

“Don’t suppose you’re talking about Lilly Scott? She’s a lovely girl, I met her on the train!” she smiled. He must be nice if he was friends with Lilly Scott.

Alma couldn’t help but giggle a little bit at the boy’s cocky attitude towards reading. She had always been a reader, nothing would ever change that, but maybe she could convince this boy that it wasn’t so bad after all.

“It’s a book that would normally be used for classes,” she giggled. “Used to be a required first-year reading for Herbology class.”

She stepped closer and stretched her hand out, assuming she’d need some kind of introduction eventually.

“My name’s Alma Stoll! I’m a first-year Hufflepuff.” she said nervously. Her hand was a little shaky, but she was hoping the boy didn’t notice.

“I don’t suppose you’d let me find you a book as well? Maybe you’ll end up liking reading!”

“I am talking about Lilly Scott actually.” He smiled back. And then smiled some more when she giggled at him. Normally he would have taken it as an insult, but this girl’s shy cheerfulness was contagious. “Well, I’m glad it isn’t required reading anymore. The less the merrier when it comes to books.”

When the girl reached out her hand for Jack to shake, he quickly took it. But for some reason, he suddenly became very aware of his every motion. Was he grabbing her hand too loosely, or maybe too hard? How long are you supposed to keep shaking? Were his hands sweaty? “My name’s Slytherin, first year Jack Ace. Or, uh.. I mean!” He hurriedly cleared his throat. “Jack Ace is my name! Slytherin is my house! I’m a first year Slytherin!” When the awkward handshake finally ended he cleared his throat a second time and buried his hands in his pockets. What an idiot he was! But luckily Alma provided a change of subject.

He absolutely hated her suggestion about finding him a book. What a horrible idea. Fiction was such a wast of time! Why read about someone else’s adventure when you could just go out on your own? But despite himself he agreed. Alma seemed to really love reading and he didn’t want to be mean. “Oh, okay… if you insist. But no school books! With facts or any of that stuff. Chose something exciting and cool, with lots of action. Yes, action and violence!”

She couldn’t help the many butterflies that creeped into her stomach when he grabbed her hand, but she quickly tried to stomp the feeling down. Why did that happen? She’d never had that happen with a boy before.

Jack reluctantly agreed to finding a book. Why? She didn’t know; he seemed to absolutely hate reading. But she was happy nonetheless, surely she could find him a book he liked.

“Lovely! Right this way.” she felt a surge of confidence as she firmly grabbed his hand and began walking out of the aisle. She led him to the very middle of the library, the sweet spot where you could see each and every aisle and category in the large room.

“If you don’t like nonfiction, there’s lots of choices! Hmm let’s see…”

She bit her lip in thought of all the fiction books she had read. He wanted something exciting and cool, which was easy, with lots of action and violence. Oh right, what about that one?!

“How about The Island of Dr. Moreau! It’s about a sailor who gets shipwrecked on an island. But this island has a mad scientist on it, and he turns animals into monsters!”

She was excited to maybe have found the right book for him, but then thought again. Maybe Science Fiction wasn’t the way to go. Oh, maybe that other one would work?

“Or maybe Sherlock Holmes? That’s always a classic. Mystery can be fun to read!” She knew these books were usually for the older kids, but she was an advanced reader. And he did ask for books with lots of action and violence.

She smiled warmly at him and waited for an answer. Her heart felt like it was beating a mile a minute while she was still holding his hand, but she again stomped the feeling down. He was just really nice! It’s totally not like she was blushing majorly right now.

Before Jack could blink, Alma had grabbed him by his hand. Her sudden confidence caught him by such surprise that he almost dropped the book he was holding. His face couldn’t have gotten any redder if he so painted it.

She led him to the very middle of the library. As they stood there, he regretted his decision more and more by the second. Who in their right mind would ever agree to this deal? The silence in the library was deafening and the overwhelming amount of dusty old books gave him a headache. It was a horrible place to be. But he wasn’t in his right mind, was he? there was something very strange going on. If Lilly Scott, or anyone else for that matter, had given him this same proposal he would’ve laughed in their face. Alma must have cast a spell on him. Yes, that must be it! He glanced at her. He just couldn’t wrap his head around why she would be here willingly. Had someone cast a spell on her too? Books were nothing but bundles of paper stained with ink yet she appeared to be excited as she scanned the shelves for the perfect one.

And at last, she made up her mind. The Island of Dr. Moreau was the name of the book. Jack had to admit that the story didn’t sound all that bad, it did seem to fit all the criteria he had set. But Alma changed her mind almost immediately. Sherlock Holmes was her second suggestion. A book that Jack had actually heard of before. A lad solving mysteries sounded a little too slow paced to him.

“My brother reads Sherlock Holmes. He’s a straight O student who doesn’t know what the word fun means so I don’t really trust his judgment. But that island one sounds pretty alright, for a book.” Still holding Alma’s hand, he walked to where she had pointed and grabbed The Island of Dr. Moreau from the shelf. He let go of her hand and used both of his to open up the first page. He began reading aloud.

“On February the 1st, 1887, the Lady Vain was lost by collision with a derelict when about the latitude 1° s, and longitude 107° w.” And with that, Jack was already bored out of his mind. He sighed loudly. What did any of that even mean? “If only there was a way to make the book read itself out loud. Maybe listening to it would be less boring compared to actually reading this old thing myself.” He looked back up at Alma. He suddenly remembered how excited she had seemed. She had handpicked a book just for him and he was dismissing it just like that? He was the one who had agreed to this offer. So he quickly corrected himself. “Or, I mean, uh, sorry! Not boring! I bet it’s a great book. Very un-boring. I just get really restless and easily distracted when I read, that’s all. No matter how good of a story it is.” He smiled at her. “Thank you though, I’ll really try my best with this one.”

She was elated when Jack started walking towards the Science Fiction section to grab a copy
of Dr. Moreau. She had read that book not too long ago, and she found it very interesting. Truth be told though, she had skipped through the first four chapters to the part where he arrived at the island. She may have been a big reader, but she wasn’t a very patient one.

Alma shook away any hints of disappointment trying to creep their way into her brain when Jack removed his hand from hers. She made the executive decision to grab the second book from Jack’s hand to help him handle the new one, watching and listening as he opened it up and read the first sentence.

He made a comment on how boring it sounded, but was quick to correct himself, saying it seemed a great book and ‘very un-boring’. Her laughter filled the space between them. She thought it was adorable how much he tried to make it seem like he didn’t absolutely hate reading; or the library, for that matter. She had met many ‘non-book people’, including her father, and they always got along just fine. Jack was different though. Not in a bad way, but in more of a…different way. She couldn’t quite place why.

“You’re funny, Jack.” she said once she had calmed down. “It’s alright, I get it, the book is a little slow. We can read it together if you want, that way it might be a little less unbearable.”

He smiled at her again and she felt herself smile back. “You’ve got a lovely smile.” she spoke softly. “I suppose I say that about everyone though, never met someone who doesn’t.” she giggled nervously, realizing what she had said.

“Well, thank you for letting me choose one for you, I can tell you don’t really fancy reading. Maybe we can hang out sometime? I promise you can choose where we go and what we do, since well…I made you stand in the library with me, haha.”

A wave of relief washed over Jack as Alma laughed at his unintentional joke. She didn’t seem offended at all by what he had said. So he relaxed and chuckled along with her. She even called him funny which made his smile just a little wider and his ego just a little bigger.

But that was nothing compared to what she told Jack next. He’s got a lovely smile? Never before had a compliment made him feel so warm and fuzzy inside. “Oh, Thank you!”

Alma had given him two compliments in a row now. Her confidence was starting to rub off on him, and he really wanted to show his appreciation back, so he said “Well, you’ve got lovely eyes! And I don’t say about everyone. Green is my favourite colour.” He chuckled and looked down at his robes, which were of course, green. “Believe it or not.”

He lit up at her suggestion about the two of them hanging out. He lowered his voice to a whisper and stepped a little closer so she could hear him. “Say, have you ever been to Hogsmeade? I’ve been looking for someone to go there with me. We could buy chocolate frogs at Honeydukes, or prank equipment at Zonko’s, or get ourselves some butterbeer at Three Broomsticks! But I hope you don’t mind bending the rules a little to get there.”
