@Alec Mason
Elsian was playing a dangerous game.
At this exact moment he was supposed to be at his friend's house, safely tucked away playing video games and staying up late ruining their friendship over hours of monopoly for a 3-day sleepover.
He was decidedly not at said friend's house.
Nor would he be for another few hours until the wee hours of the morning. Truth was his friend Sage was covering for him, he would only be staying at his friend's house for 2 days, tonight he was setting things up for their own big temporary hideout/game zone. He had quite a bit of time to spend to say the least. Luckily, he was quite the night owl and had slept all day, though Sage had continuously insisted that if something went wrong, or he got too tired he could show up early at her house and wake her up via knocking on her window aggressively.
Her grandparents slept like the dead; she had explained morbidly. She had been quite insistent that it would be a fun thing to wake up to, something like out of Peter Pan; Elsian personally would have disagreed on the allure of a creepy eternal kid demon breaking into your room and ruining your sleep but to each their own.
The point was it was pushing past 11:45 now and Sage was the best bro ever and Elsian could not screw this up. Sage had even given him her baseball bat a few days ago in preparation. ‘The muggle defense’, she said. It was a very nice bat. The nice lady on the bus by Grimmauld Place had also though so. Hopefully it would not be used. Although he would likely still end up goofing around with it and the baseball he’d found in his bag. No doubt his friend's work.
The lights of the cars zoomed by with the last flashes of traffic before people got home for the night probably. He kicked his foot against the sidewalk noisily, eyeing the cars quietly as he waited for his chance to cross. A few people were still out and about, he’d even seen a few older teenagers and kids with parents, but he was still a little paranoid about being stopped by an adult. It was summer. It wasn’t odd to see teenagers still out by the mall or shop areas, but Elsian wasn’t going to those places, he was actually getting further away and would soon be on empty streets.
He hoped it looked like he was just heading home.
The crosswalk flashed to go.
Clutching a strap tightly he forced himself to walk. Not run. Not rush. Walk. For once it was actually hard for the boy to take his time. He wanted to be there already. The bag was heavy after all, he wanted to finish his and Sage’s little project, but it was one thing to run around when you were with friends and in a crowded area and another when you were alone in an empty area. He’d just be asking to be called on for looking suspicious.
Merlin, forbid he had to explain away the disgusting amount of spray paint and paintball guns in his bag.
Eventually he’d skipped over some of the busier streets. It was getting later, way way later and he couldn’t have easily explained away being in that area, so, he’d taken a bit of a longer route, one that took him through some nice-looking neighborhoods. Definitely safer. And he could totally explain away being out by walking home. It was a little annoying. The place looked way different at night, and he’d gotten a but turned around, but eventually he’d made his way out of the ridiculous neighborhood, swinging around some random pizza place and diner before cutting through what was possibly the sketchiest little alleyway tucked away between some tiny little, dead quiet shops, closed. The only thing open was the distant gas station and pizza place he’d passed. It led right to where he needed to go.
He probably shouldnt use it…
But going around was a lot of effort…
On the other hand, it totally looked like the place a killer from a slasher would get their first victim.
Hmm, decisions, decisions…
He pulled his backpack off, slipping the baseball bat out before replacing his bag.
Perfect. He went into the creepy serial killer alley. In true horror movie fashion, there were two ways to turn. One was a dead end. Luckily there were no killers so far. He fiddled with the bat, goofing around like a dumbass, trying to balance the thing on the palm of his hand upright and ultimately both dropping it and hitting against the concrete walls in a series of horrible embarrassing failures. Thank God no one was here to witness it.
“Ew.” He gagged, there tucked in the corner was a shopping cart covered in trash bags. It stank. And oh god there was a rat, no no, it was a family of rats. “No,” he gasped aghast, “no, not the babies. You guys could do so much better don't eat the gross trash,” he whispered disgustedly. He gently prodded the rats, trying to get them both out of the way and away from the trash while not breathing in the nasty air.
It did not work. Momma rat was huge and had decided he was a threat. “NO NO NO,” he squealed, scrambling back from angry momma rat, “this is for your own good!” He hissed, he felt like a slighted mother. He dug into the bag quickly, clutching it to his chest as he dug out some brownies he’d promised to bring Sage and internally begged for forgiveness as he threw down the brownies to his feet like a blood offering to appease an angry god. “Friend, I’m your friend!” Mother Rat paused. Elsian once again begged for peace. The brownie appeased her, she nibbled at the food, only staring up at him as her little ugly gremlin babies scampered up to devour the rest. They were so ugly and adorable he could weep.
“I’m gonna cry, please dont attack me.” He begged, gently stepping over Momma rat and her little rat family. Her babies cowered a bit but she only gorged herself on more brownies. “I promise to bring more food.” It was a promise. If not for the way he and Momma rat had silently bonded then as a way to make sure she didn’t bully him later if he passed through here again.
He broke past the gross trash. Turning the corner into fresh air! It was glorious. 10/10 would breathe again. He took the time to slip the backpack back on rather than clutching it to his chest as he’d done when in peril. The bat stayed out though. It was too much effort to put it back away. He looked up. Another Neighborhood, cookie cutter houses and perfect lawns aplenty but he was closer than ever to his target. The abandoned mall was only about a 30-minute walk now! He walked forward a new man, one with less brownies, may Sage forgive him. Crossing the street and contemplating rats and brownies he spared one last glance at the house he’d needed to cut through the lawn to get away from the killer alley. Highly suspicious. Alas, apparently even slasher villains needed sleep, so Elsian was safe for now. What good luck.
Shoe scuffing against the sidewalk he let the bat sway as he walked, just having enough sense to keep it from hitting the ground. Huh, he walked kinda loud…
…wait…
He paused just in front of the corner of a house's weird shrubbery fence. The steps continued, getting louder. Ok he wasn’t loud just too stupid to notice another person in time apparently. Wonderful. Loved that for himself.
Elsian went to step forward, maybe peek around when the footsteps quickened. Why were they quickening?! Abort abort, he stepped back just in time to avoid running straight into someone, flinching lightly in surprise and knocking the bat against the sidewalk with a sharp clang where he fumbled. They were just a kid. He cursed, panic evaporating as the baseball bat rolled away into the empty street. Why was it so loud?
He went to the street, crouching to grab the bloody thing. He looked at his uninvited companion, wondering if maybe he’d just run into someone part of a larger group, “Sorry I-”
Alecs stupid face looked right back at him.
Oh hell no.
“What the hell.” There was no way. No! No way! Out of all the thousands of millions of other kids in the universe he’d run into Alec freaking Mason. “What are you doing here?” He demanded, pointing the bat accusingly at the other boy as he stood.

Closing his eyes worked on being mindful, paying attention to his senses, feeling the cool night breeze as it brushed past him and tickled his skin. This summer had been a lot... but he could finally start to have some semblance of peace. His sister was in good hands, she had someone to watch over her. Everything was going to be okay. It was all perfect and yet it had happened once again, he couldn't sleep. His mind was running too fast sorting through a million different little thoughts at once. Despite the change of scenery, Alec decided he'd make do. The teen was going to do was he always did when he couldn't sleep, sneak out, take a walk and get some fresh air, he'd be able to explore better this way anyway. Maybe he'd find some local shops to come visit later.
Of course, Alec wouldn't be able to find anything with his eyes closed. For once he didn't mind. Alec needed to feel like he didn't have a care in the world, and he didn't, well except for that annoying piece of hair that had escaped the messy bun he'd tied his hair back into and the wind was now blowing into his face. Alec let out an annoyed sigh as he tucked the piece of hair behind his ear, he could only hope the wind wouldn't bring it back to get into his face.
Alec could hear the distant sound of nocturnal animals, and the gentle way the leaves on trees shook as the wind swayed it's branches. The sound of his own footsteps and eventually the sound of another's. Distant a first but eventually getting closer, and closer, and closer. Alec's eyes flicked open in time to notice the other moving out of the way. “Sorry, I should have been watching where I was going,” sighing he face palmed himself, “It's... It's been a long day.” When he let his hand fall from his face to his sides Alec both heard and watched the clattering of a baseball bat as it fell and rolled along the lifeless street. Now the baseball bat caught his attention. Kids weren't out for late night practice of muggle sports at this time at night, right? Wary, Alec took a step back.
A 'what the hell' made Alec do a double take of the person in front of him. “Elsian?” Alec asked awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. Elsian questioned him on what he was doing, pointing a baseball bat at him and Alec took another step back. “I could ask you the same thing,” Alec said, then remembered the baseball bat, he looked away. “Walking,” he answered, when he looked back he put his hands up, “jeez Elsian be careful where you swing that thing please, I'd rather not have to take a trip to the healer's office.” A look of confusion crossed his face as he took a moment to remember the situation they were both in, “what are you doing out this late anyway? Wouldn't your parents get heated if they knew you were walking the streets this late?” Alec asked, truth be told he knew nothing of Elsian's parents at all, for all Alec knew Elsian might not have had parents. Alec was just making the most reasonable assumptions he could make in this situation.

His face twisted into grimace, a look torn between annoyance and a curious sort of bafflement. “I asked you first,” he said stubbornly; his nose wrinkled in confusion at the boy's sudden compliance. So timid, much different than what he was used to from the other.
“I-?” he looked down at the bat. “Oh.”
He let it fall limply to his side. It lightly clanged against the street where it hung; Elsian fiddled with it briefly, a look of embarrassment aimed down at his feet, his ears felt hot. He’d forgotten about the bat. “Sorry,” he mumbled reluctantly. Looking back up at the boy he squinted, eyeing up the new distance the boy had made. “I wasn’t gonna hit you with the bat stupid!” It was said accusingly, or at least was meant to be, but the Gryffindor was unable to keep the hint of a whine out of his tone, tinted with a lingering embarrassment.
Still feeling slightly grumpy and oddly embarrassed he shrugged, kicking his green converse against the crumbling asphalt of the street. “I could ask you the same thing,” he parroted back childishly, but deep-down curiosity was burning a hole into his thoughts, digging its grubby heels in, why was Alec here? Then again, it was Summer so why wouldn’t he be? Maybe he lived around here.
Shuffling off further into the empty street he played with the bat nervously, hesitating. “I have permission to be out,” he lied. It sounded feeble and unconvincing even to his own ears. “And y’know,” he moved on quickly, “bribing rats with brownies, finding a corny killer's house, that sorta thing,” he sent a pointed side look towards the other teen as he began walking, “not that it’s any of your business.” He swung the bat, hitting a random pebble across the street. It skid noisily against the ground, landing by the edge of the sidewalk near Mason's feet.
“Do you live here then?” Elsian asked, his tone was likely the most civil it’d ever been towards the other teen up to date! It was pure curiosity.
“I thought these were all Muggle houses.” Eyeing the boy up and down Elsian frowned, head tilting confused, “and I thought you were from a pureblood family.” From a blood purist house to be precise, though this went unsaid.
This did not mean it wasn’t implied.

The other apologized about the bat, followed some whining from Elsian about how he didn't plan to hit Alec with the bat, and saying stupid. Well that's not very nice... “I... I didn't say you were going to. I just asked you to be careful, and mindful about swinging it around, yeah?” Alec asked, trying to make sure Elsian understood, noticing his embarrassment. Alec hadn't been aiming to embarrass him over it he was just worried about somehow getting whacked in the head with it, he felt his worries were reasonable.
Alec has asked about Elsian's parents and Elsian said he could ask the same thing to Alec. “You could,” Alec admitted, followed by him waving his hand in a way of dismissal, “but it's not worth your time or effort if I'm not going to give you a straight answer.” Alec replied, hands finding their way into the pockets of his jeans. Alec watched as Elsian shuffled off into the empty street little by little while fidgeting with the bat he was holding. He said he had permission and Alec rolled his eyes. Elsian's explanation for why he was out this late was strange, Alec raised an eyebrow though held back his tongue and kept from commenting.
Elsian asked if he lived here, and Alec glanced over at the houses. Imagining what it would be like to live in this neighborhood, live here. Elsian mentioned he thought they were muggle house. Alec folded his arms across his chest pursing his lips. Elsian said he thought Alec was from a pureblood family. It was Alec's turn to frown, “do you really believe in such vicious stereotypes? It's not like every pureblooded family wants to- not everybody can afford-” Alec couldn't figure out how to phrase what he wanted to say and it was quick to make him frustrated. Alec let it go, deciding his point wasn't even one worth making.
Eyeing the pebble that had been flung was Elsian swung the bat, Alec reached to pick it up. A heart-shaped pebble, nature was interesting, a small smile edged onto Alec's lips as he pocketed the pebble, knowing his younger sister would like it. “No, I don't live here.” Alec spoke, he let his arms fall from being folded across his chest, pointing back from the way he came. “It's about a thirty minute walk from where I stay, and it's temporary anyway”Alec spoke, huffing, he glanced down, and kicked at a random pebble on the street. “Not that it's any of your business.”

Right. Straight answers, never any of those around. Not when it came down to Mason.
“Perish the thought,” he scoffed, turning away to continue walking along the street, “nothing’s ever simple with you, probably kill you to be straight forward for once wouldn’t it?” He swiped at another rock, the bat hissing through the air as it smacked into it. It clacked against the road quietly and he imagined how far it would go if he’d been in the mall already. If it would echo loudly against the ground floor or bounce along the frozen escalators when he’d gone with Sage.
Was Alec even capable of talking normally?
Elsian didn't think so, at least perhaps not with Elsi himself. It was hard to imagine.
Right now, he seemed…ok. But it was in a weird and slightly unnerving way. He was so used to the other boys continued prodding at his composure, as if it had been a game to get Elsian to run off or blow up out of anger; until that had happened at least. When he saw Alec he expected the rude teasing, the biting remarks, and the growing pile of ruined things he’d had to fix or throw away when disaster struck without fail. That’s just who Alec was. And Elsian had never been able to follow along the invisible lines of how his housemate's mind worked and all the hidden rules in place in the other boys' seemingly separate little world he lived in compared to others.
Even now Alec's little ‘game’ had firmly stuck to Elsians thoughts. Their recent interactions, more distant than anything, had done nothing to make him feel better either. He hadn’t been able to shake the feeling the moment he truly relaxed, thought that whatever Alec had against him was finally over for the most part…that it would start all over again. Like a trick.
He shrugged, hopping onto the sidewalk.
Didn’t really have a good answer to that. Not yet, or at least nothing he was going to say to the other boy and risk starting one of his weird tangent fights with twinkle toes over there.
“I thought maybe it was one of the reasons you hated me. At least at first.”
Elsian didn’t think that anymore, but it had been a thought. A possibility a few months ago. Then he’d realized the boy was just a jerk in general. Or he had been. Like he said, things had seemingly changed recently. Elsian still disliked the other, they still fought, but it was…far better than it had been, nothing like when it felt like Elsi was consistently being singled out. But maybe that was just a mix of luck and Elsians efforts to not sit anywhere near the boy in the last few months of school.
Somehow, he oddly didn’t really mind this version though. For now, at least.
The pebble was pocketed. The sleepy Gryffindor gave the other an odd look. “You’re so weird.” He followed the others hand, staring down where he’d come from. It was the opposite of where he was going. “But hey, what do y’know! A straight answer didn’t kill you.”
Although, there was definitely something off tonight. He paused, silent for a moment as he slipped off his bag, the thing slumping to the ground. He went to pack the bat away. “Are you…ok?” He settled on, after a pause.
He stared up at Alec, a small smile on his lips, “it's just that usually we’re already fighting by now. Are you sick?”
He squinted, “you better not be contagious.”

There Elsian went off again, suggesting it would probably kill Alec to give out a straight forward answer every once in a while. Alec could be straight forward, when he wanted to. What was it for Elsian to care about Alec being straightforward? Not when he clearly hadn't gotten permission to be out and Alec was kind enough to let the hap hazard lie slip through the cracks unnoticed. The other boy continued to swing the bat around and Alec had no idea why was he deciding to stay around and wait for the day where the bat would accidentally hit him in the face. Alec was usually the careless type, the one to make that sort of mistake. The roles were reversed, Elsian was still swinging that bat around! Alec didn't know why he had even tried to let Elsian know he needed to be a little more careful with swinging the bat around.
It was hard to surprise Alec's rigid surprise when Elsian had suggested he had at first thought it to be why Alec hated him. Alec didn't hate him, he'd just never corrected Elsian on it, why would he try? “Because of your blood status?” Alec asked, he didn't wait for an answer, a scoff following his words immediately. The young teen shook his head, frowning, “that's so old school,” now it was discrimination against werewolves(even if they were technically still fully human!), the part- veela or part-giant, the dhamphirs of the world, really people liked to hate on anything different. People liked to hate on the things they didn't understand. Alec hated ignorance, the people who had the resources available to educate themselves and chose not to. People could be dull sometimes...
Alec had pocketed the heart-shaped pebble and Elsian felt the need to comment on it. In reaction Alec simply shrugged. Looking at Elsian with a smug smile edging onto his lips, “good,” he stated simply, “It means I'm not boring.” Alec had talked about where he'd come from, rolling his eyes at Elsian's enthusiasm with a straight forward answer not killing Alec. He snickered, “you never know, there's still time, it might. Whose to say?”
The mood shifted quickly the second Elsian got quiet. Everything was suddenly so serious. At least Elsian was putting that bat away. He asked if Alec was alright. Alec stared and blinked, unsure what to make of the question. Alec didn't respond and Elsian joked to ease the tension. Playfully Alec faked a cough before shaking his head, “not sick, I promise.” Alec didn't know why he'd added the last bit. He'd never promised Elsian anything, it was going to make Elsian more suspicious of Alec. “Where are you heading off to?” Alec asked, he needed something to keep him out and about, he wasn't ready to head back yet, at least not for a few more hours. “Would you care if I went with you?” Going anywhere with Elsian was going to keep him busy, whether they fought or as it currently stood, were both being strangely civil.

Old school?
“Who even says that anymore?” He laughed, tone edging on teasing. Gaze dropping he pushed the bat down, shoving it between cans of spray paint and colorful duct tape. Bundles of snacks for Sage and plastic crunkled under his fingers, gently shoving the items against the gray walls of the backpack. He wished he’d been able to bring his enchanted one. But he hadn’t been able to get it back from his aunt's house in time.
It left him with the handle of the bat poking out the top, tucked between the 2 zippers pressed up against the handle and keeping it in place. The pink and black of the metal shone dully under the dim streetlights. At least it wouldn’t fall out. “Or maybe it just means you’re crazy,” he shot back, peeking up long enough to give the boy a judging once over when he coughed. “Crazy and infected, better not contaminate me.” He sniffed dramatically, shouldering the bag as he stood up, dusting away the dirt clinging to the knees of his gray jeans.
The bag hung heavily. Digging into his shoulder painfully.
Each pile of items hadn’t been much on their own but piled together like they were? The weight really added up when you were walking a long way. Especially when you were one very lazy Gryffindor.
“Well. It was great almost hitting you with a bat but-”
Elsian paused. Twisting to look at Alec with a small frown, eyebrow quirked up with a curious look bordering on suspicion. Sure, they hadn’t been fighting. Oddly civil really. But that didn’t mean he like…trusted the other.
“Downtown,” he answered simply. This was no lie, though it was vague. “By the old theater,” he nodded to the street, “why?”
He wasn’t sure he liked where this was going.
Then again…It was kinda exciting. Curiosity was tugging at his brain like an annoying constant buzz, drowning out reason in the wake of the shiny brand-new unknown right in front of him. Alec Mason, the boy who'd been a total thorn in his side and the biggest prick he’d had the misfortune of being saddled with throughout the year; the same boy that was acting so, so different than normal. Elsian couldn’t help it! This was so new, and weird! They’d never spoken this long without breaking down into a huge fight or one of them straight up ignoring the other. Was it really so hard to believe the lazy Gryffindor was curious enough to listen? To drag this out?
And it wasn’t like Alec could snitch. Not without looking like a total tool and getting in a shit ton of trouble too.
Besides, as much of a jerk the other had been, he’d never come off as a snitch.
“I’m not sure you wanna be a part of this…” He began, hesitating. Eyeing Alec quietly he tilted his head, thinking before seemingly coming to his own quiet decision. And he shrugged, lips tugging into a smirk, “but alright.”
Fiddling with the strap of his bag he made his way towards the other teen, dragging the backpack off and unzipping it in a smooth motion as he plopped it by their feet. He made a small motion towards the other boy's pack, silently urging him to get it open as he crouched by his own backpack. “But if you’re coming with you’re helping me with some of this stuff.” It was left unsaid but implied that the other boy should put his bag down and crouch as he began pulling out cans of pink and blue spray paint and rolls of colorful duct tape, shoving them by the others bag to put away. The dull clink of metal against plastic; with a huff and sharp grin of pride he tugged out a smallish water jug filled to the brim with heavy, sparkling blue powder and shoved it against the sidewalk to the other boy's feet.
He zipped the bag up, slipping it onto his back. Elsian could have sobbed tears of joy at the lightness. Oh sure, it was still heavy but now his shoulders were crying out in pain at least.
“Come on.” Standing up there was a small pause where he let Alec catch up, then he began walking, leading the way into the dimmer, empty streets of old downtown. His shoes crunched against the tiny dust shards of a broken bottle. Twisting on his heels he shot Alec a curious look, shoes scuffing against the pavement lightly before Elsian found his balance and began walking backwards with ease. “So why did you wanna come anyway? Are you just bored or,” then more teasingly, “are you running away?”

Apparently it was that easy to get Elsian to agree to letting him tag along. He was surprised, but he didn't let his surprise stop him from nodding as Elsian mentioned that if Alec was going to come he had to help him with some of 'this stuff'; 'this stuff' was whatever Elsian had stored in his backpack, it looked heavy. Alec crouched down, taking his satchel off, he opened it, and would carefully pick up each item Elsian had set down, putting it in his own bag. His eyes inquisitively inspected each item, as if it were an artifact on display at a mueseum. He was curious about Elsian's items, curious about Elsian's plans for them, most of all he was curious why he agreed to help hold onto them for Elsian, curious about why he was almost... excited about tagging along. There were very few people who had enthusiam for adventures while the waking world slept, it made all those who did just that bit more enticing. It made Alec want to second-guess everything. How was this happening? How could it be happening? They weren't fighting or arguing, it was a wonder.
Or perhaps not.
No matter which way Alec wanted to paint it, he had been the problem. He was clumsy and careless, his actions were going to anger and upset people at some point. Elsian had ended up as the unfortunate victim many a time. The young teen was rather unsympathetic to Elsian. He showed no remorse for any of his actions. People needed an outlet for repressed emotions, it just so happened that Alec's became Elsian. Elsian had nothing to do repressed emotions or issues or whatever, however, it was easy to direct them towards Elsian when the kid was mad at him some stupid ruined potion and Alec felt there were much bigger problems than a ruined potion, Alec felt he had much bigger problems than a ruined potion, or some book Alec had spilled juice on. All of it, it was bigger than the stuff Elsian kept on nagging and nagging him about. Alec was unable to offer sympathy or remorse for something he didn't meant to do, something so small, or the 'accidents' he caused because he was upset with Elsian.
His reasoning was oh so incredibly weak, it was a lame excuse to act like an arse to anyone. Part of him had accepted that he was a bad person, or at least a morally corrupt individual. It made it easier to justify terrible actions to his brain. If he was but a bad person, well, bad people couldn't help but do bad things, it was in their nature to be bad. Alec knew he had a choice; to make the good decision, to make the bad one, or to look beyond the means of ever simplifying any situation with such words.
Alec was less of an angry person than he had been during the school year. There were things you just had to let go, you couldn't grow as a person or mature with them there. . . What a fun little psychoanalysis to have while currently out with the person that he gotten him onto thinking about it. Elsian waited for Alec to finish putting everything in the bag and Alec closed it, slinging it back over his shoulder. Truthfully, it wasn't very fun to be dwelling on the fact that he was the bad guy here. He didn't know how to talk about it, this wasn't as easy as making an eagle drawing, an invite with puns, and apology tea. He was a Gryffindor who wasn't very Gryffindor-like, meaning since he didn't know about to go about the subject, he wasn't going to bring it up. Alec had to get at a slight run to catch up with walking Elsian, before returning to normal pace as he caught up with him.
Elsian decided to speak up, the distraction Alec needed, perfect. Alec tried to mask his laugh appearing due to the large jump from bored to running away. Alec smirked, “not bored, only boring people get bored; though it's not as if I'm interesting enough to be running away either,” he joked, his eyes would flicker from his shoes then up to Elsian and back down to his shoes once again. “Mostly looking to waste a few hours. It's nice to, you know, get away for a bit.” Alec shrugged. If Elsian had been expecting an interesting answer he was going to need to look elsewhere for one. Alec wasn't sure what Elsian had expected for an answer when he asked.
“I have a better question,” Alec spoke up with a hum a smile edging at his lips. “Your items, their muggle?” Alec asked, he shouldn't be making assumptions, it was better to ask, even if chances he'd be wrong were slim to none. “What exactly do you plan to do with all that... stuff?” Alec was unsure what to call it. He could assume purposes of the items though he had never been great a guesswork when it came to muggle things. Magic was the solution to almost everything, he rarely had a use for muggle items. Speaking of muggle things, “have you ever played football(soccer) before? I learned this summer. There are also these muggle things called films. Their neat. Well some of them, others deserve to be burned in a dumpster fire.” He had found some good films, it was a shame the good ones were like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

“For someone not boring…you sure have some lame answers.” He ribbed, smirking sharply at the boy.
Kicking at a rock he shrugged, eyes dragging across the sidewalk and houses as they left the neighborhood. A car flashed by, painting the mostly abandoned streets in sharp, blinding light as it passed. Distantly he could hear the traffic of the busier streets and the hum of something loud in the silence from one of the nearby stores. “I guess.” Elsian had a nagging feeling his reasons for ‘getting away’ weren't anything like Alecs. He sounded much too serious.
Oh?
“Doubt it.” Elsians questions were obviously superior and impossible to beat.
Leaning against the light post, he lazily listened to Alec, pausing by the crosswalk. A few cars zoomed by, just barely too busy to be able to risk making a dash for it across the street.
“They aren’t all muggle.” Granted, a good portion of the things were. “I made at least some of it after all.” And what he hadn’t? Well, a few of the things were much better off now in his opinion, thank you very much!
The lights flashed to walk. No cars in sight.
Nearby was a huge parking lot that marked their destination. Empty, save for 2 cars parked by some tiny pizza place that was closing for the night. It was in view now. The outside shopping center and the new mall perched in the middle of the other stores. That wasn’t the place they needed to go though. No, where they needed to go was just a bit further. The fastest way just so happened to be right through the parking lot and through the open walkways leading straight through the wall. The reason? Tucked away, a bit more of a walk, was another mall. Older, no longer as popular that had been closed down and was to be torn down in September, it was on a street that was out of the way, surrounded by some trees and a few tinier shops, it just hadn’t been getting enough business.
It was too close to some fancy neighborhood for squatters to stay at without getting cops called. On the other hand, the people behind it had already stripped it for anything useful. They didn’t care enough to keep people off the property.
Sage and Elsi weren’t the only kids who’d started hanging around there.
They were, however, the only ones to have the genius of using it beyond a simple hangout spot. It’d become a huge game of sorts. And now he and Sage had ended up making a war zone, with some help from some other teens, who also thought it’d be a blast to have a big war zone for paintball and other games in the middle of the mall.
They were setting up traps and boundaries for the next game.
Elsian tugged at his bags strap, digging his fingers into the fabric when he felt the familiar pull of nerves. The urge to pull his hair grew as he began to lead Alec across the deserted street to the large parking lot.
Silence. And for a moment it would seem as if he wouldn’t answer. Happy to listen to his unlikely companions rambling.
“It’s for the war zone. To set up new boundaries and safe zones.” Elsian said, though maybe war zone wasn’t quite the right term.
“There’s this mall. Not this one, but behind it, and we’re making a…” he made a wild gesture with his hand towards the mall, as if trying to point out said unseen abandoned structure behind it in the darkness, “a arena? Or a gamezone.” he…probably wasn’t explaining this very well. But it was hard to explain when you had different parts of the mall marked up for different things.
They had all worked very hard on it.
“It’s probably best if you just see it.”
Footsteps left the pavement and landed on new sidewalk. Elsian happy to simply wander into the eerie darkness of the outside shopping center and all its closed shops. There wasn’t a single light on, save for a few distant lights of security cameras in shops; the water fountain in the middle of the open area was overbearingly loud in the quiet.
Curiously he gave Alec a confused look, falling into step with the other. “What’s football? Is it like baseball?” Now that was a sport he liked. Or, at least he liked the lazy version Sage and he played. That and the batting cages. “I know about t.v.” he agreed happily, “my dad likes going to the theater together and a few of my friends have those muggle streaming sights.” It was one of the things he’d miss when going back to school, he had really liked going to the movies to hang out.
“My dads been trying to make his own version with a few friends that can record muggle movies but…” He thought back to attempt #5. “They aren’t stable for very long.”
“What type of movies do you like?” He’d personally felt insulted by Hocus Pocus. Those women were not witches, if anything they were hags.
Sage with wide eyes and a new perspective had dramatically claimed everything she knew to be a lie when he pointed this out. He’d solemnly agreed.
Witches on the other hand…that movie had horrified Elsian.

Elsian was playing a dangerous game, saying he doubted Alec questions could possibly be any more interesting then Elsian's own. Alec blamed Elsian, setting him up for something boring to say, you had to have question that could set up interesting answers, one that started and sparked conversation. He was 99% sure that was how it worked. There was a 1% chance he was way off from how it actually worked and incredibly wrong, he dreaded that 1%. Alec was surprised to learn everything Elsian had wasn't muggle, because none of it seemed... Magical. Or held the familiar whimsy most items from the wizarding word held. Elsian explained he had made some of it after all. To such an answer the only words Alec seemed to be able to get out were, “oh,” Alec wasn't sure that was how it worked but okay. Alec was willing to go with Elsian's reason in this case.
Glancing around Alec took in the setting and places around him as they walked. He had questions he kept to himself as he walked focusing on looking around and getting familiar with his surroundings. Elsian would answer Alec's next question, Alec would once again be confused by the answer he had ended up receiving. Elsian said it was better if Alec saw it. He nodded in agreement.
Alec brought up football to Elsian, for once he had knowledge over the other, he knew something more, something that he other didn't. Alec grinned, he was excited to explain. “No idea what baseball is. Basically there's a grassy field with two ends. A goal, a place to score for each time. You have to try to kick the ball into the other teams net to get a point. Feet only, no hands.” It was a simple enough explanation right? One that got the point across. Alec liked how much he was able to run around when he wasn't playing goalie, it helped him work off a lot of excess energy he always had, making it easier for him to sit still during the day.
One thing they were were aware of was films Alec had never heard of a theater like what Elsian was talking about and certainly didn't know what muggle streaming sites meant. Elsian said his dad had been trying to make his own version... Of what... Movies? Alec wasn't sure what he meant, but nodded and he listened to Elsian speak. Elsian asked why type of films Alec liked and his face flushed as he thought back to what he had taken to watching when offered the option of films. “You're going to think it's silly...” Alec spoke trailing off, he glanced away. Alec was going to talk about it anyway he knew he wanted too, it was just... “I like nature documentaries. Not the most action and only muggle stuff but like how their is usually a narrator. You get to see moving pictures of the mother bear and her cute baby bear cubs.”
Yes nature documentaries. He supposed it had been done on purpose, Alec grave fear and hesitancy with animals, curb it by showing Alec all the adorable nature documentaries. Steer away from the ones about the horrendous side of nature. Alec liked the ones about snakes the most.
