The weather had been muggy back home, heavy in your throat and sticky, clinging to even the shade. Here though, with the nice breeze drifting from the sea and to the streets…well it was definitely an improvement. Thank Merlin his aunt hated the heat just as much as he did.
Said aunt had gone off to soak in some sun and hit the shops. They’d meet back up at 10, they’d go back home then, but for now? Elsian had total freedom. The shops, the beach, the arcade, and best of all? The Fair by the pier. Game booths had been set up all along that area, with pretty lights leading up and down the boardwalk. Surrounding it were the rides, hidden behind a tiny makeshift fence put up to keep people from wandering in without paying for a bracelet; the ferris wheel had been clear to pick out, along with some of the taller rides he could hear screams coming from, plenty of rides and games. It looked fun, but he’d held off for the first few hours. He hadn’t been to too many fairs but from the ones he had been to, well, it was always more fun when it was at night, or at the very least sunset.
That knowledge was the only thing that had gotten him this far without breaking. He’d hit shops, went down to the beach briefly to be a pest to his aunt, and even hit up the arcade. A good day so far, 10/10 would annoy his aunt while eating ice cream again.
It was finally getting late though. The sun was finally beginning to set, the air getting all the more bearable with the chill of the ocean setting in. The perfect time to go to the fair and hit some of the shops in that area, the crowds wouldn’t be nearly as unbearable now that the heat was retreating slowly but surely.
The remains of his ice cream went straight to a bin. The boy paused to let the crowd wash over him as he stayed pressed up against the wall. He’d need to go all the way down the street and back down the boardwalk, he didn’t quite fancy it though. It was getting crowded fast with the flood of people leaving the beach to get to their cars and leave, at this point, it’d be easier and faster to just…go around. Use the backstreets.
He scuffed his foot against the sidewalk, it was a little annoying he hadn’t thought about this but what could you do? Sighing he turned on his heel and walked further down the street, away from the boardwalk and towards the backstreets connecting the tiny allies between shops and leading to the normal, less touristy shops. It was annoying, but at least it wasn’t crowded.
This had definitely been the smarter choice. He could already see the fair and boardwalk again. He smiled, relieved; turning down the corner he went for the main street. He paused.
Somebody was yelling. He squinted over his shoulder; it was coming from the area tucked by the closed food shops. Near the tables ugly fountain ppl could rest at.
No, it wasn’t just 1 person. It sounded like a whole group.
That totally wasn’t alarming or anything. There was a solid moment he thought about just minding his own business, probably just a fight over a breakup or something he told himself. Another part of him burned with curiosity though, curiosity and suspicion.
He went back, quietly creeping down the street to peek into the little open area through the small little alley like walkway you had to pass through.
It was a group of older kids, 4. 3 boys, 2 with blond hair, one that was taller than the other with short locks, and another that looked like a total tool with the mullet he was sporting. The 3rd was a brunette that was so tall and lanky it looked like a stiff breeze could push him over. And finally, a girl with a very regretful bob that made her look like a rip off mean girl from a bootleg film. Apparently, she was the one screaming, making grand gestures to her blouse and aggressively poking someone in the chest as she screamed in anger. A large pink blob of a stain was still dripping down her front. Yikes.
That didn’t look good.
He walked closer and… the person being yelled at was just a kid. Like, how old even were they? 11? 12? These guys had to be like 16, 17 maybe, and they were starting shit with someone like 4, 5 years younger?
What the hell were they thinking?
He paused, quickly weighing his options. Should he leave and go get help? That seemed like the smarter option, or at least, that's what others always said was the right thing to do. Somehow that seemed like the worst possible thing to do here.
For one, there were no adults close. He peeked around the corner, none. He’d need to run down to the main street if he wanted help and there was no way in hell he was leaving.
A scuffle was heard, someone cursed and there was a bang as something, or someone, hit a metal bin and sent the empty trash can clattering to the ground. His ears rang with the sound. He quickly stepped into the small back street connecting the shops, they were definitely trouble. “You ass!” It was the girl, the ugly bob haired one practically screeching, she could rival a banshee with that yowl. “Look what she did! It was brand new!”
God they were bullying a kid like, 3 or 4 years younger than them over…what, ruined clothing? Jeez, they even looked older than him! At least by a year. What the heck was wrong with them? This had to end. He quickly walked up to them, this was so many levels of messed up.
“She doesn’t look very sorry,” the blond boy sneered, he lifted up his drink, popping the lid and-
Oh hell no.
Elsian dropped the walk and ran up, shoving the older boy away with a violent push, gripping the jerks arm he shoved it back to his own chest aggressively. The drink spilled over the cup in a gross sticky mess of pink smoothie, it clung to his shoe, melting into the toe of his converse but he didn’t care. Not when he got to see the look of shock on the guy's face when his drink spilled all over his jeans. “Oops, my bad.” He said, grinning sharply at the group as he stepped back.
A glance at the girl, she seemed fine. If anything maybe bored? Annoyed? That was good at least, assholes like these guys only got a kick out making people upset.
“Just so clumsy,” he offered, hand going to his chest in a dramatic gesture. Earnesty dripped from his tone like a sickly-sweet poison. Eyes zeroed in on the pink mess on Chad#2 before darting to little miss banshee and the eye sore of pink mess on her blouse. “But hey! Pink looks good on you! Really goes with the whole edgy asshole vibe you got going on!”
Oh, he wasn't aware a face could get that red.
The guy shoved Elsian, “no need to be so rough,” he simpered, hand landing on the plastic table he’d been pushed into. It rattled with the weight. Looking down revealed it was holding a good amount of food, likely theirs. Wow, here they were yelling and picking on people instead of eating their perfectly good chilly fries, they were probably cold already.
Didn’t they know chilly fries worked wonders against pink stains? Really covered up the pink with the grease. He picked it up, looking between the pissed off teens and the younger girl, “What? Not a fan of pink?” Then to the younger girl, “do you think the pinks too much?”

“do you think the pinks too much?”
Whatever trance Mariposa was put in broke the moment the boy spoke to her. She was surprised when he arrived, she was in a rather secluded spot, with four teenagers that were pissed at her -for foolish reasons she might add.
" Pink doesn't boid well with Cyan." She said brushing her hair from her face and fixed her headband. Were Muggles always this violent? One would think that because they looked a few years older than her and probably were older than her, they wouldn't get physical with a 12-year-old girl.
Mari looked over at the boy who sported the rest of her bubble gum-flavored smoothie, and said " Nither dose vomit green I'm afraid." She sighed and shook her head, this could have been avoided if they had let her leave when she wanted to, and she would have still had her smoothie.
She shivered from the chilled air, it was a beautiful night and a fun day. She had finally convinced her mother to let her spend time with her stepmother and baby brother, it was the most fun she had in her twelve years of living. She went on the Farris wheel twice and played a few booth games and even one some, giving the stuffed animals to her brother and stepmom. She even learned a bit more about her father.
The best part of her day was her being able to indulge in her sweet tooth, something she could never do when she was with her mother. That's what got her in this situation- indulging in her sweet tooth- She wanted a smoothie before the booth closed, so her stepmom gave her some money, and off she went. All and all it was a good day, she would do it a gain minus this last bit, where she gets ganged up on by a group of teenagers for anciently spilling her drink.
Mari watched the newcomer pick up a tray of chilly fries, it didn't take a genius to know how this was going to end. If they were going to be unreasonably angry at her she might as well give them a good reason to be that way.
" Finally bitting back now that you have some boy here to hide behind!" The tall brunette shouted jabbing a lanky finger in her direction, his face twisting in an ugly scowl. Mari looked away to the table behind her grabbed a half-full cup of what she assumed to be fruit juice and chucked the liquid in his face, he was dripping red, but unlike his other two friends, he was wearing a black shirt.
He was stunned for a second and for that brief second Mari placed the now empty cup back on the table, she turned to face the brunette
" Oops, my bad I truly do apologize." She dully said playing with the chunky sliver ring on her index finger.

He snickered, the bob haired girl looked just about ready to blow a gasket!
The red of her scowling face did nothing to compliment the pink stain of her clothing either. The poor dear.
“Now that’s rich! Coming from assholes picking on 1 kid! 4 against 1? Oh you’re so brave.” He mocked.
Elsian choked on a laugh, loud and biting in the sudden silence. But how could he not?! This kid was hilarious and really these assholes deserved everything they got. “No no, I think it suits him.” He offered cheerfully.
The other blond, mr mullet, also known as Chad #1 in his mind, did not find the same humor in this apparently. The only one without any damage yet. He grabbed the back of his friend's t-shirt, dragging the brunette away as he went to grab the younger kid; the other blond stepped up closer, looking just as furious as he suddenly shoved Elsian again, fingering quickly curling into the Gryffindors t-shirt. “Now listen here you little shi-” Elsian dug his fingers into the other's arm, clutching tightly as he brought up the chilly fries and shoved them into the older boy's face. He yelled, immediately trying to shove Elsi away but he held on, using the chance to slam his shoe into the other's shin and press the food to the other's eyes as he cried out in pain.
The moment he stumbled backwards Elsian let go, shoving him into mullet brain. He wasn’t sure if the guy had been able to do anything, let alone if the kid had fought back. But he did know the shove had resulted in a painful tumble in a table holding some of their things. A satisfying crash filling the air and the sound of their friends cursing angrily mixing with hisses of pain.
Elsian quickly moved to the younger girl, hand pressing against her shoulder as he went past her.
“Run.”
There was no time to think. No time to argue. So he acted, grabbing the younger girl's wrist with a small tug to spur her on. A warning. A question perhaps. He ran, only letting go when he felt her finally begin to move, to run as they slipped through the tiny entrance way and around the corner, towards the main streets and away from these cursed back shops.
He could hear cursing behind them when they’d run, the angry yelling growing more distant for the briefest moment as they’d turned the corner and booked it down the street. Briefly, he’d turned his head to look back, pausing along the edge of the street leading to crowded traffic; the boardwalk just across the street now. He’d just wanted to see if the girl was keeping up, see if she was sticking with him, he hadn’t thought those older kids to be stupid enough to make a scene this close to the crowds. Just proves how wrong he was. And how lucky he’d been to have been watching the corner of the empty streets they’d run off from when he saw the familiar angry face of Chad #2, chilly fries still decorating his shirt and painting his face in grease and cheese. He yelled, but it was distant, and underwhelming compared to the sounds of the traffic and crowds now, the idiot pointed at them, and suddenly he was dead sprinting in their direction. His little gang of rejects hot on his trail.
“Crap.” He hissed, and nodded towards their pursuers. Seems he and his new companion were really in this mess together now. “Come on!” He reached out, clutching her hand tightly before rushing through the gap in traffic and into the crowds, he didn’t fancy the 2 of them getting separated in the crowd, for better or worse the group was after both of them now. He did not want to know what would happen if they caught up; but there was no way they’d be able to do anything in front of this many people right?
No, they’d have to drag them off to some secluded corner. And Elsian would pitch the biggest fit in the history of this dock before he let them drag either of them away.
They swerved between people, weaving through until they got to the small bars separating the walkway to the beach. The sand literally only a few inches away and a tiny little drop, maybe 4ft at the most where they were over the railing. They were out in the open. Surrounded by people. He could see the fair only a bit of a walk away too!
His fingers clung to the railing as he let go of the other hand, a small huff leaving him in the slowly chilling air. At least they hadn’t had to run when it was still burning hot out. “Well, weren’t they delightful?” He twisted around to look at his new companion, back leaning against the railing as the cool air from the sea brushed against the back of his neck. “Are you alright?” he pushed away the hair hanging in his eyes, “sorry if I muddied things up but it seemed like things were getting a bit heated back there.”
“I’m Elsian by the way.” He peered into the crowd, eyes lingering for a moment before going back to Mariposas. “We should be fine here if we just wait them out a bit. Not even they’d be stupid enough to try anything he-”
An angry yell. And the sound of pushing as people grumbled and moved out of the way.
He whipped his head to the sound. There was no way…
Clutching the bars he pulled himself up, feet bracing against the metal. He wobbled for a moment. Catching his balance as he pushed himself up from the metal, using it to peer over the people around them. Another yell; those idiots…
“Apparently they are that stupid.” He said, alarmed. The banshee was standing on a bench, looking for them. He hopped down just before she could see him. “Come on,” he gestured to the fair as he began walking, “maybe we can try the fai-”
Arguing broke out, closer. Bob cut yelled, and he just knew they’d been found out. Knew even before Chad #2 broke through the crowd, eyes burning in fury with pink staining his shirt and chili fries still clinging to his face. “You little shits!” he screamed, hand trying to clutch onto Elsians shirt, “get back here!”
Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.
He twisted away, pushing through the crowd with Mari before a strong hand grabbed his bag's sleeve with a harsh tug. He fell backwards, struggling away with a scowl as he shoved at the guy. “Let me go!” He pulled harder, shaking Elsian harshly as if to get him to shut up. As if that would work! “Get off!” He yelled, kicking out, “Let go of me!”
