Colin stood outside the doors of the duelling club for what seemed like an eternity. He could feel the presence of several students as they passed along the corridor behind him. He wondered if they'd ever remember him if he entered this place and never came out again. Or if he came out on a stretcher all covered with a shroud and his cold lifeless arm dropping over the side.13 September 2022
He'd never been inside before. He had heard plenty of stories, though, of what took place behind these solid and likely oft replaced portals. Some of the stories --- of students losing limbs and being blown across the room by powerful hexes --- were really quite thrilling, but also quite scary! He knew he'd have to enter this place eventually, as he'd worked out a date to utterly destroy his fellow classmate Avery Chen in a proper duel watched over by Henry Knight.
Colin let out a big puff of breath.
But today he'd be entering alone. And much sooner than he ever expected!
"Colin, lad, you would have to go mouthing off at a bloody fifth year! He can probably rip us apart with a single wave of his wand! Oh crap crap crap!"
It's not like Colin had never duelled before. He'd fought Avery to a stalemate last year before Henry intervened. Just last month he'd duelled some foreign bloke after the great Slytherin vs Ravenclaw broom race. He was a third year, and Colin fared well.
But ...
"But, laddie! A fifth year! You might as well just ask a Death Eater for a practice round! He's going to slay me, Dan is. Oh, bloody hell, Colin!" It was one thing to tease a fellow second year or mildly harass a first year. But straight up telling a fifth year that he was a fake Slytherin for being in Salazar Dorm, or worse --- saying that he'd really make a fine Gryffindor! --- those were clearly fighting words and Colin's tongue had really run wild this time.
He placed his left hand on the huge brass handle and opened the door.
"Nothing for it, lad! In we go!"
Colin entered and looked around the room. He stepped towards the center of the place, grasping his wand tightly in case anyone jumped out and tried to practice some horrible curse on him. He licked his lips apprehensively.
"Dan? Are you here?"
He wondered if the stains on the floor were magical burns or blood or --- or something worse. What that worse could be, Colin didn't know, but he felt pretty sure he'd soon enough add to the stains on the walls. His heart began to thump as scenes from his life at Hogwarts passed before his mind --- chasing Pax through the corridors and getting bloodied up; howling at the Moon; causing trouble in classes; learning to fly; meeting Sophia and Kim and Gem and Fyre Angel and everyone; falling for Clair. "Why do I feel like I'm going to die today?" he whispered into the dim room "Surely --- surely older student aren't allowed to actually kill younger students, right?"
He cleared his throat and stood straight. He drew his wand. "I --- I'm ready for you," he said to the four corners of the dimly lit room.

From the Frying Pan and Into the Fiendfyre!

Dan sat in the Dueling Club, awaiting his opponent. He was clad in his casual attire, t-shirt, shorts, and bare feet. He was hardly about to get his good clothes messed up. He had set time aside specifically for this. What was said to him was not something that could be settled with words. This required a duel.
That said, all Colin would see upon entering would be a Peregrine Falcon perched atop a wall fixture. That is, until he stepped inside.
Colin McCoire had seriously fucked up. Dan had made Salazar Dorm his home in Hogwarts for many years, for reasons not least of which his best friend Andrew Vance had wanted to bunk with him.
And Colin had the gall to say he was a fake Slytherin for being in that dorm instead of the dorm named after a member of the inbreeding Black family, Regulus Black. But on top of that, he said that Dan brought shame to Slytherin, and that he would make a better Gryffindor instead.
It had taken every erg of Dan's self control not to catapult Colin across the room, petrify him, and use the tickling charm on him for the proceeding hour for so grave an offense. Instead, Dan, in front of the entire common room, demanded satisfaction. And so a duel was declared.
Dan had gotten there before the time, so that he could be there first to really sell the ominous nature of what was about to take place. All battles are won before they are fought, after all.
Then, the door opened, and in walked Colin. The boy hadn't chickened out. Hm.
Dan let Colin walk a bit inside before acting. Once he stepped inside far enough, the falcon would screech at him, and fly directly toward him, talons out, only to morph into a barefooted Irish fifth year boy about 5 feet from him.Dan? Are you here? I --- I'm ready for you.
"Oh are ya? Are ya sure about that?"
"An Buachaill a Labhair Cac Shite, teacht chun bás."
Reducio
The Boy Who Talked Shite, come to die.
Dan would then turn and move onto the Dueling platform, awaiting his opponent to join him on it.

"Wicked!" Colin said as he turned to watch the lovely peregrine launch itself from a sconce on the wall. His eyes widened as it soared through the air. He wondered how the beautiful bird got into the duelling club! On instinct, he raised his right arm to offer a perch to the magnificent hunter. "Och, thoo's a bonny wee fawcon! Kaaaigh --- kaaaigh!" He cried out, forgetting his surroundings for a moment.
"Yeep!" He was surprised as the screeching bird transformed into a boy --- Dan! Of course! Animagus form! Colin sighed and lowered his arm. Before him stood his adversary: taller than him, tee shirt, shorts. Shoeless? Colin raised an eyebrow. So, was this going to be that kind of fight? He should have brought his shillelagh with him! He would have trounced the older boy with that in hand!
Dan started talking to Colin in Gaelic. Colin couldn't speak it well, but understood well enough what the older boy meant.
"Och, haud yer whisht lad!" Colin kicked off his own shabby shoes and stomped barefooted himself up onto the duelling platform to face his sworn foe. He narrowed his eyes at Dan, not quite sure what to do next. "A'm ready." Colin held up his wand, ready to cast his first --- and likely last --- spell at the older Slytherin boy.
ReducioOch, haud yer whisht lad! --- Chill!
Och, thoo's a bonny wee fawcon! --- Oh, you're a lovely little falcon!

Dan frowned slightly. His peregrine form swooping to attack didn't elicit the terror he had hoped for. Oh well. Time enough for that during the duel.
As Dan turned to face Colin, he saw him throwing his shoes off. Not that Dan was complaining, but... why though? And... was he not wearing socks?
Multiple questions flew through Dan's mind, all of which were mostly irrelevant. Why was he not wearing socks? Why'd he decide to be barefooted for the duel? Was it because Dan himself was? But he was ALWAYS barefooted, and Colin should know that perfectly well.
Then again, he didn't know better than to piss off a 5th year...
Whatever Colin's reasons for baring his feet were, Dan was not interested. Perhaps he would ask after the duel.
And anyway, this provided something interesting... Dan knew exactly how he was going to start the duel. And how he'd end it as well.
"Normally, flattery would get ye far, lad. But not here. 'N not with me. Ready yerself."
Dan brandished his Hornbeam and Dragon Heartstring wand, and prepared to cast his first spell. This was what his wand specialized in. Dueling. He always felt a slight tinge of guilt for being a quidditch star instead of a duelist. But he liked what he liked.

Colin opens with an Incendio! (WC 9=2 for Dan's LC=11)
[d20 : 1]
Colin Crit fails the cast! The damage and effect are redirected onto him instead! 50+(6x10)= 110! Damage to himself!
As for whether he lit himself on fire...
[d6 : 6]
Yes he did. And for the maximum of 2 rounds too. Colin will take 40 damage per round for 2 rounds!
Dan meanwhile opens with a Full Body Bind Curse! (WC 14)
[d20 : 19]
19+15= 34. Dan successfully casts the spell!
Does Calming Presence give an autohit?
[d10 : 4]
No it doesn't.
Now it's Dan's accuracy: 10+6=16 vs Colin's evasion: 15+6=21.
Colin dodges!
Final Standings:
Dan: 900/900 hp. Barefooted.
Colin: 490/600 hp. On fire for two rounds. Also barefooted.

From the Frying Pan and Into the Fiendfyre!

Colin readied himself. There was never any question of backing down. Especially not at this time of the month. It was do or die! And Colin's own hawthorn wood and unicorn hair danced with practiced grace as he traced the first incantation in the air between them.
"INCENDIO!" Colin cried. Colin might be doomed to lose, but he'd put up a strong fight. He felt the warm tingly sensation of magic flowing through him and his wand. It was every bit as exhilarating today, standing on the precipice, as it was that very first time he was able to light the end of his wand with lumos!
And just as he did so, his eyes widened in horror! He really wished wands came with one of those curious muggle rubbers that could undo a mistake! "OH CRAP CRAP CRAP!" Colin cried as the gout of fire roared out from his wand, somersaulted back on itself as if choosing to spare Dan the pain!
Colin had traced the spell backwards!
His casting was good, his aim was spot on --- but the flash turned on Colin and hit himself square in the chest! Colin managed to light himself on fire!
But all was not lost, as he heard Dan cast his own body binding spell. Maybe Dan was confused by Colin's choice of opening gambit, maybe it was too difficult to aim at a moving target that was on fire, or maybe there really was power in barefoot duelling!
Whatever the reason, Dan's spell missed Colin entirely! Oof! If only Colin hadn't screwed up the wand motion, he'd be in pretty good shape!

From the Frying Pan and Into the Fiendfyre!
Dan traced the spell perfectly, and enunciated "Petrificus Totalus."
The spell went off, but Colin's spell backfired horribly, blasting him with fire, and setting himself alight. Great move.
Dan's aim was thrown off by this, and the spell whizzed by him. Unbelievable. Maybe there was a reason why Dan went into Quidditch instead. Maybe it was a bit presumptuous to think that he was a bad duelist because he missed the FIRST spell... But He had had a one other dueling experience back when the club was being reopened for the first time. Arc Percivous, someone who Dan had lost contact with, now that he thought about it, had ruined that with a spell that... interestingly seemed to have gotten weaker?
That... made no sense. Dan would have to try to remember to ask about that... How did Mucus Ad Nauseum get weaker? Was he just imagining it? Almost felt as thought he was breaking a wall of some sort... A wall that is after the third in a sequence of four walls...
Dan shook the thoughts from his head, scowled and readied himself. He'll not miss this one. He was focused this time. He would not be distracted. Not by Colin's feet, nor by Colin lighting himself on fire.

Colin tries a flipendo! (wc 9+2=11)
7+12=19. The spell succeds!
Does Dan auto dodge?
[d10 : 9]
No he does not.
So Colin's Accuracy: 6+5=11 vs Dan's Evasion: 20+10=30! Dan Epic Dodges! Gonna put some spin on that!
Dan tries the Full Body Bind Curse again! (wc 14)
17+15= 32
The spell succeeds! Does Calming Presence auto hit the spell?
[d10 : 10]
Yes it does! colin is nailed with a body bind curse!
But for how long?
[d3 : 3]
2 rounds! 2 Rounds Colin is unable to move!
Colin takes 40 damage from his burningness!
Final Standings:
Dan: 600/600 hp. Style dodging like a boss. Preparing phase 2 of his plan.
Colin: 450/600 hp. On fire for another round. Colin is petrified for 2 rounds.

From the Frying Pan and Into the Fiendfyre!

Whoa! Colin was pumped! Duelling was every bit as exciting as broom racing! He reveled in the same heart thumping adrenaline rush!
His thoughts turned from duelling and racing to Clair. My God, she was another kind of adrenaline rush altogether! Just the thought of Clair got his heart pounding. He smiled inwardly: Colin was kind of glad she wasn't here to see him literally on fire --- he'd have to tell her all about it later!
Colin shook his head like a dog and cast his next spell: "FLIPENDO!" Yes! It was a good cast, and at least Colin didn't send himself flying backwards through the air! Too bad Dan managed to dance out of the way! He really wanted to land a good strong spell on the older lad. He never really expected to win this duel --- Dan could probably turn him into a bug and squash him into yuck. But the thought of standing up to a cool older lad, that was still something!
Oh no! Colin heard the incantation for the body bind --- again! Maybe the flames were dying down a bit; but Colin wasn't able to evade Dan's direct hit! Oof! He landed flat on his back, wand still held before him and toes pointing towards the ceiling --- and totally petrified! Oh crap crap crap!
DRAT! Colin was now totally at Dan's mercy!

From the Frying Pan and Into the Fiendfyre!
Colin cast his spell, a Flipendo. Dan decided to showcase his agility, and flipped to the side, caught himself with one hand, and flipped back again onto his feet. Just to finish, he struck an anime pose.
Missing not a beat, he cast his own spell.
"Petrificus Totalus!"
Success! Dan's body bind curse had hit! Colin landed right on his back, and was completely helpless and unable to move.
Dan knew it was dueling etiquette not to attack a petrified person, and he had no intentions of violating the rules. No, that was never his plan from the beginning. He wasn't going to attack his now helpless victim.
Well... At least not with any spell or any real damage.
Dan strode up to Colin's completely still form.
"So. Wanted ta be barefooted like me, didja? Im flattered. But ye've had this comin', lad."
With that, Dan began scribbling his fingers all over Colin's exposed, immovable soles, and darting at his toes with masterful movements, acquired from years of back and forth torture with his Irish mates in Dingle. Both of which were much easier to do when he couldn't so much as twitch.
"Maybe ye should think about who ye messed with, eh? That is, if ye can think straight right now."

YEEEEEECK!!!
Colin screeched with the delightful torture! AHH HAH HAH HAH!! Or rather, he heard the sounds of delighted laughter in his head! The duelling club room itself begged to differ, however --- for no sound escaped his throat. He tried to wiggle. He tried to move even his smallest toe! The only sign he gave that he even noticed Dan's merciless tickling of his feet was a stream of eye watering tears! His giddy mind played back memories of how Sophia had tickle-tackled him by the greenhouses last year when that ruddy owl of hers had stolen his hard won breakfast!
And then he remembered how Liam often attacked him in just this way --- their younger brothers holding him down and his twin having his way with Colin's feet! And like those wonderful days, the tickling just wouldn't stop! His entire body felt electric with the incessant and unstoppable torture.
And the tears of mirth mingled with tears of sorrow. As Colin saw it in his head, it was Liam tickling him for Dan was now playing the part of Colin's departed twin.
And he thought of Clair again. A sudden and wonderful dread came over him. Would that girl ever learn his secret?

Action: Suffering continued tickle torture!

Dan had an evil grin. His brutal tickle torture of Colin's bare feet was just delicious.
He noticed that colin's feet felt like an earlier version of his. Not calloused in any way, just like his were now. But he could tell that Colin was no stranger to barefooting. Maybe he would extend friendship later.
Dan continued, running his fingertips up and down Colin's soles, stroking each of Colin's completely immobile bare toes, across the pads, up the stems, and juuust under the tips. Even though Dan was the one who always went barefooted, shoes were not very common among his friends in Dingle, and Dan had become a master at tormenting bare feet.
....Unfortunately, so had his mates.
But, this was not the finale. Oh no.
Without ceasing his fingers, he shifted his position to Colin's side. His right hand continued to tickle his feet, fingers focusing on the toes before scribbling back down his sole, while his left hand lifted Colin's shirt, and proceeded to tickle his bare stomach. He scribbled his fingers all over it, and circled his navel, relishing in the torment Colin must be in.
Without doubt, he would absolutely think twice before he EVER talked shite on him again.
"Enjoyin' yerself, Colin? Ye likin' what ye earned?"
