APPEARANCE

Polonius is a tall and narrow man built in the shape of a very tall coat rack. His shape is rife with bony points and unpleasant angles that are impossible to flatter no matter what he wears. Clothes simply hang off of him from the shoulders, draped down over him and hiding what is an entirely unsubstantial body. He slouches often to mitigate his considerable height. A faint scar circles his thumb, small grooves visible along his knuckles and palms, though it has become almost invisible with treatment and age.

He wears a pair of simple black spectacles that often slip down the length of his nose when he reads or speaks to people, being forced to look down for both tasks more often than not. He has dark hair, kept short, and a beard which he largely ignores, trimming it down to size at irregular intervals. His grey eyes are useless for discerning his emotions, as he holds the same expression whether he is deep in thought or completely spacing out.

PERSONALITY

Polonius struggles to remain focused and listen in social interactions, often tuning out and needing to be caught up to speed mid-conversation. He is oblivious to his surroundings, although he is rather sharp when he is applied to specific problems and tasks. He is capable of understanding highly advanced technical concepts, although he is incapable of reading social cues and often requires things are spelled out for him rather than needing to pick up hints. Puzzles, riddles, and mysteries are his favorite pastimes, although he enjoys games as well, as long as there is no risk of injury. He is driven and curious, interested in taking everything apart to see how it works.

In the Hospital Wing, his bedside manner is often poor, as he tends to see his patients as problems to be solved more so than people who require a certain level of tenderness and care to aid in their recovery. He often misinterprets anger and annoyance with his attitude as symptoms. However, he is also extremely forgiving of outbursts, as he tends to place himself at a distance from other people and not take anything said personally. His travels around the world have broadened his experience and left him with an open mind, though he makes the occasional ignorant comment inherited from his parents blood-purist perspective.

BIOGRAPHY

Polonius was born on the 14th of February, 1974, ruining his parents' Valentine's Day. His father, Octavius, was a rather successful alchemist in Hastings who specialized in healing draughts and served as a local healer in the absence of more qualified wizards. His relationship with Polonius' mother, Priscilla, started as one of business, as she was something of an expert in procuring rare potions ingredients from dangerous magical beasts. They married and Priscilla decided to settle down in Hastings with Octavius, although she is from Nantes, France originally. No longer working in procuring ingredients herself, she instead served as a broker, a trade which often brought her down Knockturn Alley, although it provided enough wealth for her family to live well.

The first sign of Polonius' magic came out of sight of his parents, leaving them fretful that he might be a squib. He did not tell them for fear of being punished for using magic (even accidentally) on one of his parent's friends' children. The boy had been teasing Polonius about his name when he suddenly found his tongue tied in a knot. It took many weeks worth of allowance to bribe him to keep his mouth shut, although peace was worth it to Polonius', who had been subjected to far too much torment about getting along with other children.

Regardless, it was a big relief to his parents when he received his letter inviting him to Hogwarts. He attended and was sorted into Hufflepuff, which he was quite excited by, although his parents were not concerned with what house he got. The boy was not very popular owing to his strange name, know-it-all-ism, and general lack of charisma. Still, he did make a handful of friends who were of similar disposition, or just felt bad for him. He graduated from Hogwarts with NEWTs in Charms, Potions, Herbology, DADA, and Transfiguration, making him well suited to work as a healer.

He began his work as an assistant nurse at St. Mungo's before advancing to a level of competence where he felt comfortable branching out on his own. He left London to become a traveling healer, moving between magical disasters around the world and aiding local healers in advanced and specialized cases. His travels between missions brought him to Hastings, where he met the woman who would later become his wife. Talia Baker, a muggle hotel manager, bumped into Polonius on the street and the two hit it off and agreed to meet again even though Polonius did not have a telephone to call and arrange dates.

Settling back down in Hastings, Polonius took over the role of his now-retired father, serving as an alchemist and potion provider to the town. He married Talia shortly after, introducing her to the world of wizardry as he was required to explain his cauldron as well as the many mysterious visitors which showed up to consult him on matters of medical magic. They had a child, Otto Frogge, in 2008, and lived together in Hastings. They lived mostly in the Muggle way, save for the occasional magical convenience, and the fact that Frogge's occupation required the use of magic. He was quite content living his double life in Hastings. That was, until, the post of school nurse for Hogwarts opened up and he applied on the recommendation of the prior nurse Brumby.
