Colin stepped out of the doorway that concealed the very existence of St. Mungo's Hospital, turned and began walking. His twin brother Liam was inside and Colin couldn't understand why. Hadn't they both been attacked by the same foe? Didn't they both fight the same enemy? They were both injured, but why was Colin fully healed, left only with new scars on his neck, his chest and his side and Liam still lying in a hospital bed with wounds still on his body?

The healers couldn't --- or perhaps wouldn't --- tell him much. He heard them saying to his Ma and Da that there are classes of wounds that are extremely difficult to heal and some that can't be healed at all. Colin tried to understand, but ultimately couldn't. Weren't their wounds the same? Weren't they twins?

As his feet took him into a neighbourhood, his thoughts turned to Clair Fernandez. He'd heard of her from friends over the last year, of course, but they'd never met outside of the broom race last Saturday. And wasn't that a tough race! Colin realised that the broom race was not really so much about trouncing Ravenclaw, but more about helping his team just get to the finish line! Blood and burns and broken bones and all kinds of other injuries got him thinking that the real foe was the course itself!

At first, Colin thought it was kind of odd that, even during the race, part of him kept a watchful eye on Clair, hoping she wasn't too hurt. And now he found himself hoping they'd meet properly! It was one thing to engage in violent competition with a girl that you --- wait, did he like her? Whoa. But yeah, how could he not be worried, even a little bit, about her on the course?

Colin soon found that his feet had wandered into a park. At least, this is what a park in London must look like. It was really quite lovely! It was rather like a garden, with well kept trees and lawns and beds of flowers. There were quite a lot of people about. Families enjoying the warm, other kids playing games, people reading or just --- being. As he went along he saw that one boy about his age was reading Lord of the Rings and on another bench there was a girl sketching something in her drawing tablet.

He snapped his fingers as he passed her by. "I shall have to remember to get a couple sketch books before I go back to Hogwarts!" he cried.

It had grown rather stuffy at home, crowded some might have said. But who cast blame? After getting the taste of life outside of her family...

NO

Outside of the Muggle world, learning about magic, making new friends, and choosing her own life to live, coming back home to the mundane, and the regular felt lacklustre, to say the least. Going from a whole castle to explore, and places to cast spells, and fly brooms, coming back home, to a small flat with 5 other people, well some alone time in the park was a frequent outing.

She took her sketch journal, some pencils, along with Kiwi(her faithful rat), and made her way to the local park, some fresh faces to see, and hopefully some inspiration to draw.

The park was teaming with life. The sun kissed your skin, but didn't scorch, and the wind offered a cool breeze, carrying the scents of a nearby wild flow patch. Families were bustling about the park grounds, kids chasing each other, mothers exchanging the local gossip, and array of dogs also taking advantage of the open space, and ideal weather. Though it was flooded with others, the park still offered a better option for sketching, and getting some much needed alone time.

After sometime of searching, Monica was able to find a bench, far enough on it's own to offer her the perfect space for drawing. She picked her feet up off the ground, crossing them on the bench, resting her sketch pad on her lap. Kiwi ran out from her hood and rested on her human's knees, desperate to be involved. Monica looked down at her faithful rodent, "Well, who shall be my model?"
Gazing around the park, she saw many candidates for her little project. She saw an old man in the distance feeding the ducks with a loaf of bread, the sun resting on his shoulders, giving him a glowing backlight. The picture of provision, and caring of others.

Off in the other direction, was a small girl flying a kite... trying to fly a kite. From where Monica was looking, she seemed like she was having a hard time getting the wind to carry her piece of paper, anchored to her string, up in the air. She gave an illusion to determination, and childlike wonder.

Unable to make a choice, her eyes fell on a boy who had just entered the park... he seemed familiar to her, but unsure where? The boy seemed tall, with black and green hair, the type of person that you would either look at out of curiosity, or because you recognized them, and Monica was doing both...

Without realizing, she had already started to sketch the boy out. Lifting her pencil, she glared down at what she had started to do....Well, as good an inspiration as any, besides based on his current state, he looked like he had quite a story to tell, which was always Monica's favourite subjects to sketch.

She took a good look at the boy, watching him pace around the park, and took to her pad, making out his frame, matching the width of his jaw and chin, marking his eyes, and shoulders. It wasn't long before a full shape took form, and it seemed to be rather good, for a quick in the moment project. Changing the tool on the pad, she began to connect her frame work together to bring life to her little drawing when, "I shall have to remember to get a couple sketch books before I go back to Hogwarts!"
Startled Monica nearly fell out of her seat, causing little kiwi too scramble to hold on to her perch, Looking up the boy was standing over her. Quickly Monica hid her sketch, how embarrassing! How would you even explain to someone you didn't know that you had been watching them, recreating their image in your own personal notes, without the slightest hint of asking for their permission.
Wait did he say... Hogwarts?

That was it! He must be a student from Hogwarts... A Slytherin, if Monica remembered correctly. Though his name escaped her.
"Well I would recommend it, especially if doodling is your type of thing.... sorry I hope you don't mind," She held up her work of the student, "I was just inspired when I saw you across the park, it isn't finished.... And it still has a ton of work to do, but what do you think?" Figuring if the boy was from Hogwarts, seemed like a safe place to at least show him her work so far.
"Well, always nice to meet friendly places in unexpected locations... I'm Monica by the way, that is if you like the drawing.... if you think it is rubbish, than just pretend this never happened..."Monica could feel her heart racing, anytime she was to show off her work, she felt a twinge in her chest, a nerve she couldn't loosen up... Snapping out of the anticipation for his thoughts she jumped into a new conversation, "What brings you out her.... sir...." Well at least knowing his name might help make this all less awkward.

"YEEEP!!" Colin leapt, startled by the voice and spun around on his heel! His kilt twirled out & billowed like fronds on the breeze and his left hand instinctively went the wand in his pocket!

The voice didn't appear to be at all fazed by the mention of Hogwarts, and Colin realised too late that he was, in point of fact, very far away from the magical world just now. His mind raced as he wondered at what was happening. Even as the girl spoke, he thought that maybe she's a local muggle who decided to tease an obvious foreigner; or perhaps a squib? Colin often wondered about squibs, especially since he'd started reading the book he found in the classroom last year, his uncle's journal from when he was at Hogwarts.

"Sorry I hope you don't mind. I was just inspired when I saw you across the park, it isn't finished.... And it still has a ton of work to do, but what do you think?" She held up the beginnings of a sketch. Of --- himself!?

"Are --- are you a squib? Only you don't seem ---" Maybe his voice was too low and perhaps she didn't hear what he said.

She continued on, saying: "Well, always nice to meet friendly faces in unexpected locations... I'm Monica by the way, that is if you like the drawing.... if you think it is rubbish, than just pretend this never happened..."

Colin blinked in surprise. Monica? Not --- ? No, can't be a squib! He looked more closely at the girl on the bench. Dark blue hair --- even darker than Sophia's! And did she have a rat with her? Colin sat down on the bench too, turning to face her and drew his own legs up as well. "That's a rat! Wait --- Monica --- not Monica Evans!?" He looked around suspiciously, even taking a peek behind the backrest of the bench. You just never knew when some lurking enemy would pop up and attack you! "You're in Slytherin, aren't you?"

He looked at the sketch again. She'd done a good job so far! She got his tall skinny body, long legs and arms, long hair, feather in the braid he wore on the left side, outlines of kilt and scuffy Doc Martens. Twas all there! She asked him what he was up to, and he responded: "This is cool! You did all that so fast! I don't think I've been in this park very long. But wait. Wh --- Why are you here? I'm staying at the Leaky until the train leaves. My brother Liam in in St. Mungo's." Suddenly it dawned on Colin that not every witch lives in a magical country like his own family. He got up suddenly, crouching on the balls of his feet! "WHOA! Monica! You live here, don't you!" He indicated all the houses and shops in the neighbourhood around. "In Muggledom! W --- Wicked!"

Colin sat back down, draping himself over the backrest of the bench and letting his leg dangle over the bench seat. "I wouldn't even know where to go in Muggledom! There's so much to see and all!" He realised at the last moment that he never introduced himself --- "Oh! I'm Colin, by the way! McCoire. Hey, what's your rat's name?"

His stomach gurgled, reminding him that he hadn't eaten since last night and he licked his thin lips absently when he caught sight of the rat again. But he shook his head and bonked himself with the heel of his hand! He had to remind himself that pet rats are not for eating! "Oh, sorry! I'm just a bit peckish is all!"

So sure he was talking to her, that was why she responded, but clearly she was poking her nose in places where it shouldn't be... well a conversation came out of it regardless... must be fate.

A squib? The word seemed familiar, but was it because it sounded like squid, or had she heard the term before?

Oh that's right! That what was the start of the Evans family leave from the Wizarding world! Squib, unable to use magic. Well, surely she was not that, she was a witch, no doubt about that at this point.

Captivated by his enthusiasm for her home world, the common world, or what wizards called the muggle world. It was rather interesting to have some one so captivated by what Monica had seen as so ordinary. It continued to perplex her why wizards, people who could fly on brooms, weld magic from essentially sticks, and teleport, found the common, everyday life and items of muggles so fascinating.

Colin! That was his name! She had heard about him here and there from the Slytherin house, but had never met him personally, what are the odds he would be here? He gestured to Kiwi, who scurried away into Monica's hair, "Hey no need for that." She scooped out her little friend and held her firmly in her hands, "This is Kiwi, and she is normally not shy around anyone....I have no idea why she is being shy now?"
She held Kiwi out to Colin, hoping she would sniff him and feel more comfortable. It seemed Colin was stuck in a daze, staring at Kiwi, it didn't help the poor creature feel any less calm, so Monica allowed Kiwi to borrow back in her hair for the time being.
"Oh well if you are hungry, I know this great cafe just down the road, about a block or so, if you would like to go... I don't have anything I am doing at the moment, and wouldn't mind taking you?"
Come to think about it, Monica could feel her stomach gurgling as well, perhaps it would be a good idea to get some food for herself as well.
"Of course if you have the time too, if you have to be getting back that is completely understandable."

She introduced her rat as Kiwi. Colin laughed nervously as she scolded the poor thing for being evasive around Colin. "Er. It's okay, Monica. Um. She's probably heard --- you know --- stories about me!" Colin blushed. "Oh!" Colin stood up on the bench suddenly and looked around into the trees. "Sure, he might scare yer wee Kiwi!" Then he cupped his hands around his mouth and made a kind of low hooting sound, like an owl.

Colin smiled and sat back down on the bench, smiling happily at Monica.

A few seconds later, a huge bird swooped low over her head from behind and perched on the backrest of the bench. Colin turned towards the tall owl and smiled. "Monica, this is Uhuu! He's my own owl! He's an Indian eagle owl!" He rummaged around in his pocket and drew out an owl treat.

Uhuu eyed the treat with interest as Colin held it in his hand. "Now look here, lad! If I'm not allowed to eat pet rats, you're not allowed to eat pet rats! Right? Now Kiwi is not for eating! Now fly back to Liam! I'll see you later!" And with that, Colin tossed the treat high into the air and Uhuu spread his massive wings, easily as wide as the bench was long, took off and swooped upon the treat before flying silently away.

Monica invited Colin to a cave to eat. He gave her a queer look. "Um. Do muggles usually eat in caves, Monica?" He shrugged and laughed. "Sure! Let's go to the cave and eat! I don't need to head back until later!"

Monica was shocked when the gargantuan owl landed just behind her. She held Kiwi close, who knows what that owl would try to do. Despite Colin explaining to the owl not to eat the rat as a snack,"Why would He be saying 'if he can't eat the rat as a snack'?" Monica held on tighter, now not just worried about the bird, but also about the kid she was sitting beside. Who would think to eat a rat as a snack? To say the least the whole interaction left her more than a little off-put.
She was only able to settle herself down when the bird took its leave. Monica kept an eye on Colin, before tucking Kiwi into the safety of her hair and jacket hood.

Colin seemed to be super excited about going to a cafe... but what was he talking about a cave? Monica had never once eaten in a cave before, that seemed like more of a magical persons pass time, not something any common folk would do in the muggle world.
"A cave? Um, well I have never eaten in one. This cafe is in a building." She pointed to the buildings that surrounded the park, "Just like those. It isn't far at all, and has better choices than... Kiwi." She placed her hand over where Kiwi was, the small rodent licking the tip of her finger, before burrowing further into the tangle of her hair.

Monica sat up from her bench, put all her sketching things in her bag, and lead the way out of the park and to the cafe.

It wasn't a very long walk, and the street was rather peaceful, not too many out this late afternoon. The wind picked up a bit, offering a slight chill as the sun was nearing it's decent, still a few hours before the brilliant blue would be replaced by deep navy.
"So why is your brother at the hospital? I mean, why come to a Muggle hospital? Isn't there like spells or something to heal nearly anything? If I may ask of course?"

Colin was indeed excited about going into a cave to eat. As Monica led him away from the park and towards the rows of shops and houses, Colin began to wonder how muggles could get a cave into London. He was used to caves in the mountains, but in a city? That seemed odd. He then wondered if he'd misheard her. As they walked across the street, it dawned on Colin that Monica wasn't actually taking him underground. "Oh! I see now! This --- cavey? Is that right? --- it looks like a pub! Kind of."

Once Monica got him inside, Colin felt a sudden rush of curiosity about everything! He couldn't help but stare at all the unfamiliar things happening around him. "Yeep! Monica! Look! There! They've got an enchanted portrait, just like the ones at school! And it looks like --- wait, are they putting on a play? Och! The blokes, they just disappeared! Monica, what's a Coronation Street anyway?"

Once they got to a booth, Colin was presented with a kind of folder thing. It had bizarre names of things written all over it. 'Greek Salad', 'Penney Pasta', 'fraps', 'combucha' --- He gave Monica an utterly lost look. He had no clue what any of those names meant, or even if those were food! "Maybe they just have a toastie? That wouldn't be --- Oh, WHOA!! I've heard of this, Monica! Fish in Chips! I'll have that and a toastie!"

Colin heaved a great sigh of relief. He felt accomplished! He'd navigated the strange and wonderful world of muggle food and found something that looked like it might just be edible! He sat back in the seat, idly watching as Monica read through all the things you could eat in this cavey place. "This is brilliant, Monica! Thanks for bringing me here!"

When Monica asked him about his brother's hospitalisation, Colin's expression turned very serious. He looked all around the place to if anyone looked suspicious. He lowered his voice almost to a whisper. "Sorry, you never know when someone might be watching. Even in a muggle place like this." Satisfied that none of the late lunch crowd were interested in the conversation of two kids in a cafe, Colin told Monica the story.

"Oh! He's not in a muggle hospital! He's in St. Mungo's. I don't think a muggle hospital's healers would know what to do with magical injuries! Well lass, twas almost a fortnight ago our place was attacked! Rogue werewolves." Colin shrugged. He knew of one werewolf in London, but didn't know how common they were in this part of Britain. "There's quite a lot up our way, you see. Most are just ordinary folk. They take their aconite regularly. But there are others who really cause trouble. And, well, there are some werewolves trying to stir up real trouble. And our family is, well, a target. Anyway, my brother and I got into the fight too! I got scars --- see!?"

Colin tilted his head to the left so Monica could see the still pinkish gash across his otherwise pale neck. "Cool, right? My brother. Well, Liam got all slashed up too, but I don't know why he's not healing. They won't tell me, and Ma just says he'll be alright by and by. I hope so! It's only a few days before we've got to go back to school!"

"So, what are you going to eat? I didn't recognise more than a few things on that list of food! You'd need a whole book just to tell you what's in everything!"

Getting into the restaurant, Monica couldn't help but smile at Colin's enthusiasm for the Muggle world. Like watching a kid at a candy store for the first time. Was this was she was like when first entering the wizarding world?
Colin pointed to a tv that was hanging on the walls, Monica had to hold her mouth to keep from bursting into laughter. "Oh that isn't a portrait, it's called a Tv. It is a screen that shows movies and shows on it. It is filmed in another location, then a signal is sent, so you could watch this on any tv that exists."
Looking up at what was showing, it was a show her father would watch from time to time, though not one that ever took Monica's interest. "So Coronation Street is a show, like I was saying. Those are actors, they are....I guess yeah, like putting on a play. But people used cameras to record it and to put it on the tv."
Never has Monica had to explain tv to someone, it was just what it was. And through this conversation, she realized she didn't fully understand how it worked. Just that it did.

Finding their way to a seat, Monica glanced over as Colin went through the menu, repeating the names he read, "Well I am going to get a bagel with cream cheese, and perhaps a tea." Monica leaned over and tried to explain as much of the menu as possible to Colin. This was lettuce, like green leafy vegetable, with other veggies on top, with cheese and olives. That is a pasta dish, like with tomato sauce, and noodles that are in a Penne form... Unsure if any of this made sense to Colin. How was one to explain pasta to a person?

At last they were waiting for their food, after a time at ordering, and Colin glances around, looking quite serious now, before turning back to Monica to answer her question about his brother.
"Werewolves?" Monica spoke in a hushed tone, she didn't know much about this, but seeing how careful Colin was being in discussion, it seemed to make sense that she too kept her voice down.
"That scare is cool, but what does that mean? Like why did they attack you? Are they in London? What would one do to get noticed by bad ones?"
Not fully aware that she was perhaps asking too many questions, but she couldn't help it. Werewolves?! That was fiction? She had never thought she could ever meet one.
"This might be a super dumb question... but could anyone turn into a werewolf? I have just heard stories that my uncle told, of beast of the night. Dog like people that would attack the innocent and turn them into wolves on a full moon... is that true?"[/color]

Colin sat in silence as Monica tried to explain the tee vee and the men you. It was all so confusing! "But Monica! Those blokes, right? How can they be somewhere else? I saw them right there! In that vee tee thing! They were talking and everything!" He felt a little better, at least, for understanding that they were doing a play.

He shook his head incredulously. He looked at the tee vee thing again. "Whoa. That's just magic, Monica! H--- How can Muggles even think magic doesn't exist? I mean look!" He pointed excitedly at the portrait box again. "Look how they're slowing time down! Monica! Whoa. They even dress like wizards!" He watched intently. "Monica? What's a web sight? Do Muggles like looking at spider webs?"

Colin felt so much worse when his friend started on the men you. Apparently that's what the card with all the food on it was called. She tried to explain everything, but, frankly, she might as well have been talking Italian. Colin smiled. Come to think of it, maybe she was!

"Oh! Bagels! I know what those are! They're like dough nuts, only not sweet! Not sure I'd want to eat pasta pennies, though! They sound a bit --- crunchy?"

After they ordered their food, Colin excused himself to wash up. He was only gone a couple of minutes --- a couple of minutes punctuated by banging noises and the occasional yeep of excitement! "Owooop!" Colin ran back to their seat and practically dove into the booth! His long hair was damp and quite a lot was sticking up at odd angles. "Monica! You should see the lavvy! Across from the sink there's this huge box on the wall that blows air! You bang on it and it's just like casting ventus!" He nodded, the memory of the sink still fresh in mind. "Aye. Came in handy too, lass, after that sink thing sprayed water all over the place! Oh! And --- and they've got this other box on the wall, right! And you poke it with your finger, right! And it's like casting nox! The whole place went dark as night! And then you poke it again and it's like casting lumos!"

Colin fell suddenly silent as the lavvy door opened and a disgruntled bloke exited. "Oops! I forgot to poke the box to cast lumos again! I hope that chap wasn't too inconvenienced!"

Eventually Monica brought the topic back to werewolves. She didn't sound like she knew a whole lot about wolves. Lucky! "I reckon you don't have many down here!" he said quietly. He smiled proudly when she complimented his scar! He blushed a little too. He wasn't used to girls saying things like that. "Up where we live, there're really a lot. I don't know how many. But there's enough that my Ma --- she works for the Ministry --- has to deal with local complaints about them. I don't really know why they attacked us, but ---" Colin looked around suspiciously again. "--- I've got some ideas. Me and AngelFyre have been puzzling it out and we've got some things sorted. You see, the werewolves didn't just attack randomly. They --- they were after me Monica! But it really wasn't werewoves. There's someone that was just using werewolves to get at me. I don't know who that someone is yet, but we've got some clues!"

Colin stared at Monica as she asked the inevitable questions: "Could anyone turn into a werewolf? I have just heard stories that my uncle told, of beast of the night. Dog like people that would attack the innocent and turn them into wolves on a full moon... is that true?" Last year, Colin probably would have run away in fear that she'd turn him over to the Ministry for destruction. But he had learned that more people were likely to view lycanthropy positively than negatively.

Colin gave her a wan smile and he looked into her eyes, trying to see if he could trust her. Colin shook his head --- "No, Colin, lad! That's not the way to think of her!" he whispered to himself. He took a deep breath. "The only way to change things, Monica, is to be honest. Aye --- you're right! Anyone can be turned into a werewolf. If they bite you or scratch you." He looked into Monica's eyes as he traced the line of his scar with his finger. "It's not true that they just attack innocent people --- well, most don't! You see, there's a potion that a 'wolf can take. Every day for the week before full Moon. It tastes horrible!" He laughed bitterly. "You see, I got bit and scratched up last summer. Whoever it was that wanted to kill me didn't finish the job. I only got infected. I don't go around attacking people, though! Wolfsbane potion keeps me sane during the Change and I stay away from people until the full Moon changes to waning. Maybe a day or two."

Colin hoped that Monica wouldn't be wigged out. "It's not like the old days. There's no reason to be scared of 'wolves. I've been thinking that it's important to help people understand. I --- I'll understand if you hate me. But, I'm really no more dangerous than any other wizard in our House!"

Monica looked up at the tv, watching the ad that was playing. It was one she saw hundreds of times before, and could even mouth along with the words if she wanted to.
"Yeah they slow it down with editing, like on a computer. When they film the people doing their acting....play work.... they put it on a computer to put it together and make it look like that, with effects. It's not really magic.... more like Movie magic."
Monica laughed a little, but stifled it, surely it was rude to laugh at someone who was just awestruck by her world. She would have felt awfully silly being laughed at for thinking magic was... well Magical.
"So the computer, like I was saying, has websites on it... this is advertising for people to use that companies website... like a news paper that you can access from anywhere on a computer."

Colin after some time past, and Monica gave up trying to explain the food on the menu, got up to head to the facilities, leaving Monica alone, Kiwi came rushing down from her hood, sitting just in front of Monica on the table, "He seems very nice, certainly the fastest conversation I have started with anyone." Kiwi looked back at her, tilting her head slightly, "No I don't think he will really eat you.... but best stay in my hood just in case."
Kiwi brushed her face with her paws, licking them to insure nothing but the cleanest result. After which, skerried back onto Monica's shoulder. Monica looked around the cafe, it wasn't super busy, which was what she preferred. She hadn't come here all that often, but did rather like the food, and found it a good escape from her family, whenever she needed it. The dim lights, the calm music that filled the air, the pleasent staff that could recognize Monica by name, all made it feel like her own space.

Colin came back, with the biggest grin on his face, talking about the lavatories, "Oh... well that's not....Um it's a light switch, not a spell, it with electricity. See muggles don't have magic, so we created other ways to brighten a room, or keep us warm."
She took a sip of her tea, nearly spitting it out when Colin mentioned turning off the light on someone, "Ah I would maybe do that really quick... no fun.... being in there without light..."

Finally when Colin re-settled himself, and the conversation started about werewolves. Monica listened with great intent, seems like it was her turn to be in a stat of awe.
"After you? So you guys are like undercover? What sort of clues do you have?" Monica stopped herself, "Sorry, I don't mean to pry, it's just very fascinating, and like something out of a movie!"
Colin continued to explain how people could become werewolves if bitten or scratched, the 'potion' they would take to keep those around them safe.... but.....
Monica pondered for a while, while listening to Colin....She looked at where he scare was....
"You're a..." Not even sure if her words made it past her lips before Colin confirmed her assumptions. Monica didn't know how to feel, she was in fact sitting across from a werewolf. All of a sudden the comment about Kiwi as a snack made sense...
She remained in her seat, though became noticeably pale... her blood flushed from her face.
Colin continued on, explaining how there was nothing to be afraid of....
"Nothing to be afraid of?" Monica thought in her head, she then started wondering if it was a full moon out.
No!
Though she had just met the boy today, if he was going to hurt her, he would have by now. Clearly everything Monica knew of magic and monsters were limited to the small ideas of dreaming muggles, making up fantasies of the magical world. Everything Monica had experienced up to this point had been proven false, or different that what the storybooks say, so why would this be any different.
Monica reached out to lay a hand on Colin's, looking him right in the eyes, "I'm not afraid, I think it is really cool to meet a werewolf, and I don't hate you..." She pulled out her notebook she was drawing in, "How could I hate such a captivating model?"
She laughed slightly, taking a sip of her tea, due to the conversation thus far, had gone cold. Monica didn't mind though, the day just went from bland, to intriguing, to down right enchanting. What is a bit of cold tea?
"If I may ask... How did it happen?"
