What Heaven Looks Like
Stunning Banner by Winnie Harper@Evelynn DecipioOne hand fondled the rope necklace encircling Marshal’s neck, his thumb carefully exploring the braids like it had so many times before. The hair on his head was captured in a dance with the gentle breeze as his feet traversed a rolling sea of grass, its waves shining in the cerulean glow of the moon. Trees shook their leaves like a whispering instrument before him, beckoning softly to leave the bustle of gathered tents behind. Sounds of laughter and conversation chased him on the air, yet somehow they seemed to fade behind the tender symphony of nature’s bliss on a perfect night such as this.
Passing beneath those melodic branches was to experience a peace all its own, the bustle of company all but forgotten in the moment he allowed his gaze to rise. A break in the canopy lay overhead, framing the night sky in a swaying border that invited imagination, seeming to promise more than the confines of his mind could fathom, if only he searched for it. Through that window shone another world - or even more, the heavens which held countless other worlds beyond understanding. They gazed back at him, pinpricks of starlight reflecting within hazel irises as he longed to uncover the stories they had to tell. And, perhaps, to find the light of one who could no longer shine upon his life from a place at his side.
Subconscious fingers gripped tighter at the necklace.
Stepping deeper into the copse of trees, he soon discovered a place from which he could search for those stories, and for that light he wished could shed its discerning beam on the questions dragging at his mind.
Occupying a small clearing was a gentle slope, carpeted by the same waving grass he had followed there. Set in the midst of the dancing grove, the knoll seemed to have been created with the ambition of seclusion, where one might escape with naught but their thoughts and mingle with emotions that dared not emerge among company.
Feeling as though it had been specially prepared for this moment, he lowered himself onto the hillside, allowing his back to meet the ground. Delicate blades prodded his neck as his head, too, found a place of rest, one arm angled back to fit a hand in lieu of a pillow.
From this position, a clear view of the celestial plane above was offered.
He didn’t recall the last time he’d glimpsed stars of this multitude. Having lived in the city of London his entire life, the sight was a novelty indeed. Of course, the stars may have been more evident in the skies above Hogwarts, but betwixt the rigors of school and social obligations, he’d rarely been overcome with the notion of stargazing.
Tonight, however, the uncertainty of those social predicaments had driven him here, where thoughts could be allowed to drift freely - uninterrupted and without scrutiny - into the obscurity of nightfall. Rather, one predicament in particular ailed him this eve - one that invariably filled his soul with a mixture of joy and contentment… yet also of longing.
Once more, his right hand slid across the length of his necklace, as memories flooded back of one who would have adored the sacred scene above.
”I’ll bet you could tell me what to do, big sis.” The quiet words drifted away in the breeze, a wistful grin touching his lips. ”Or maybe you would just laugh.” A faint chuckle escaped through his nose. The more he contemplated the issue, the more foolish he felt.
And yet, he couldn’t let it go.

───•─•────────────────────────────────────•─•───
───•─•────────────────────────────────────•─•───Night was falling quickly. Already, a curtain of stars had been pulled across the heavens, their hues shimmering against a canvas of gold and orange swiftly fading to indigo. Only the horizon, really, spoke of the sun's recent descent, the rays clinging to the edge of the world as though it might never rise again. It was a dance that had played itself out time and again upon the starry stage, accompanied more often than not by the symphony of the summer winds whistling through the distant trees. Tomorrow, it would do so again.
But in order for tomorrow to come, the students would need to rest their weary heads and embrace sleep in whatever form it might come to them. As both prefect and a member of the camp committee, Evelynn would often be the last to return to her own tent, ensuring the rest had retreated safely indoors by the time night had fully settled over their structures. Tonight was no different. Boots padded purposefully as the Gryffindor wound her way between the various tents. Now and then she would call a student by name, hissing after them to hurry away into their abodes lest they be caught past curfew.
A shadow in the distance would draw her attention from the younglings, however. Silhouetted against the fading light, Evelynn could have sworn she had seen a lone figure departing from the rough perimeter of the tents to trek through a small copse of trees. Lips pursed. Clearly a student given the lack of significant height, she could only assume someone was attempting to dodge the corral. And where there was one, there would often be found others... As her steps veered after the mystery figure, she vaguely wondered what she might encounter. Was it a student out on a dare? Perhaps a clandestine meeting with a foreign affair? Would she catch wind of an illicit exchange, instead? The possibilities were endless.
Admittedly, she became rather enticed by solving the riddle, curious as to what information she may uncover in the process. To that end, she had kept herself as innocuous as possible, keeping to the edge of the trees, herself, her own silhouette less obvious against the darker and dense backdrop. Feet picked their way carefully through the sparse underbrush, eyes peeled to avoid any twigs that might give her away if snapped underfoot. Even branches were pinched with care, guided past her person with a thoughtful hand to prevent the rustle of their whipping back into position with her passing.
When she emerged, it was with a modicum of surprise. Not because she had encroached upon some nefarious plot, but rather because it was so very much the opposite. There, settled against the grassy knoll was none other than Marshal. And quite alone, by the looks of it given her careful sweep of the immediate surroundings. Or so she thought, anyway, except for the fact that her was speaking. The words themselves were lost to her, twisted into little more than the same hazy buzz of a distant sea of crickets, but the tone was unmistakeable. Curious, she would hold to her own for just a little longer, circling in the shadows of the trees until she came abreast with the base of the shallow hill. But still, he seemed quite alone. Only then did she creep out, weight carried lightly on the balls of her feet to better minimize the disturbance her approach would bring.
"You are certainly cutting yourself close to curfew tonight..." There was no accusation in her tone, nor concern. Only curiosity flecked her features as she eyed him, eyes that seemed almost silver with the reflection of the waning moonlight fixed upon the boy's supine figure. He was so vulnerable, lying there. Alone in the relative privacy of the clearing. She moved her tongue to adjust the position of a leaf pocketed uncomfortably inside her buccal cavity, then asked, "With whom were you speaking?"

What Heaven Looks Like
Stunning Banner by Winnie Harper@Evelynn DecipioThe serenity of solitude. The reticence of repose. To be lost within the winding avenues of one’s own mind would forever evoke the subdued sentiments of the heart. For an emotion perpetually stifled in proximity to the judgments of another, or a thought buried eternally beneath racing words, isolation ever conceded an opportunity to flourish.
Unrestrained, they would often overrun a still soul, abusing it with no evident remorse.
As Marshal’s gaze stretched to the stars above, the emotions so governing his disposition weaved between the differing origins of impotence. He yearned for the contents of days past, even as ambition reached for the future. And all the while, a distinct understanding permeated it all - in that he was helpless to affect either.
The past could not be altered, and the future could not be controlled. Especially when the future was quite so good at sneaking up on him.
Head lifting from its place of rest, hands would shoot to destinations adjacent with his torso, rooting against the grass and providing support for his back to arch off the ground. Pupils opted for the liberty of taking their sweet time to adjust, an argent silhouette forming below him in testament to the invading voice’s source. The tone caressed his ears with a familiar frequency, overcoming initial shock to whisper the intruder’s identity.
”Eve!” The exclamation encompassed his alarm and the initial wave of pleasure to overtake him at her appearance, yet a touch of dismay also brushed its timbre.
In an uncharacteristic flood of desire to escape all else in favor of personal reflection, her presence had been no exception. In fact, hers had been chief among every attention span he’d intended to avoid. After all, in the overarching notion of stifled thoughts, the very subject of his contemplation was certain to disrupt it more than anything else. Or was it?
Marshal had never considered the image of fire tipped with platinum, yet as the very image presented itself before him - the moon enshrouding the girl’s red hair with a silver halo - he wondered how he could have been so foolish. The sterling hand of the heavens resided in her eyes as she regarded him inquisitively, their luster somehow more brilliant than the firmament they reflected.
As was customary with her near, breaths came at a premium while he plunged into the depths of those irises, becoming lost amidst the numberless worlds they offered.
Who had he been speaking to, she’d wanted to know. It was a question that he was uncertain how - or perhaps unwilling to - answer.
Elbows bore the brunt of his weight when he leaned back once more, eyes torn from hers to flick back to the sky.
”With whom was I speaking?” he murmured, adopting the precise wording which she had utilized. The response was drowned in wistful reverie, almost as though he were repeating the inquiry to himself. Several moments would pass before a crooked smile caught the moonlight, flashing across his upraised features. ”I guess I was speaking to the stars.” Arm extending to one side, he allowed the skin of his hand to brush the grass beside him, prefacing a suggestive pat of the hillside. A clear invitation for her to claim a seat of her own and join him. ”Have you done much stargazing? I haven’t, but I wish I had.” An unmistakable sense of calm befell him, wrought by the tranquil scene in view, as yet another breath of wind trickled through tree branches. Nature’s symphony was evidently roused by his companion’s approach, joining his heart in a blissful tune that eradicated his doubts. Yet even through the unspoken peace, a necessary stroke of humor would be inserted into the moment. ”I’ve missed out on a lot of good conversations with them.”

───•─•────────────────────────────────────•─•───
───•─•────────────────────────────────────•─•───Stepping only so far as to encroach upon the edge of the clearing, Evelynn had paused. Silvered irises had fallen upon the supine form, scrutinizing his every movement in the darkness. Part of her had dared not venture forth. Relaxed as he appeared to be, reposing upon the hill, it almost seemed that to do so would shatter a moment. That she might tread upon the fragile threads of the web he had woven for himself, their filaments glistening intangibly beneath the reflection of a thousand stars. That notion had secured itself all the more in place as his hands had fallen to either side, heaving to lift himself from his grassy bed as though growing suddenly alert to intrusion.
It was strange the way that twilight could tamper with the senses. Colour would bleed to greys, darks would turn to blacks, shadows would dance upon the periphery, and a crown of gold would melt to gleaming silver. The moon and stars would kiss his countenance, his complexion softened by their glow. And yet, the angularity of his features would show more starkly for the shadows that had thrown them into relief from the luminescence. There was a duality about him that drew a quirk of her head. Beneath the heavens, she could no longer claim to see the round-faced boy that had floundered at the edge of the Great Lake, but neither was he yet grown. Past and future.. the what was and the what was yet to be.. they battled for dominance in his gaze, each vying for their place in his reflection.
For a moment, Evelynn had caught his eye, and she would be content to hold it there.
And this time, it wasn't Evelynn who would sever it, but Marshal, as he relinquished her sight in favour of the endless expanse above. There was something... different... about him. The lack of sarcasm had left her puzzled, so common was it to receive some quip or other on greeting. Instead, he appeared lost to contemplation, an almost wistful smile gracing his lips in a way that compelled her to lift her own chin to the heavens when finally he admitted to speaking with the stars. They'd lingered there for but a moment before curiosity had drawn them back down, just in time to see the sweep of his arm to the grass next to the patch he'd claimed as his place of rest.
The invitation was difficult to pass up, feet stepping through the opened door before she had really properly even considered whether she held any desire to do so. "I suppose some.." Her answer to his question on her stargazing past-times had been uttered with barely a whisper, the sanctity of the moment still demanding a deferential tone. Although it wouldn't be until she had lowered herself to the grass, hands tucking her skirt well and underneath of her and her back coming to roll itself reclined upon the grass that she would tilt her head in his direction. "Ah yes.. The great ancestors of our pasts look down upon us from those stars?"
A modified quote from a movie her mother loved just a little too much, and one that always seemed to come to mind whenever she found herself beneath the heaven's unbridled judgement. It was a faint stroke, but one she was willing to brush in the name of reciprocated humour. At least initially. But the blanket of stars would pull her in, swaddling her in a sense of ironic calm. What was it that he had said once? There was something oddly soothing with the reminder of one's absolute insignificance in a universe so large.
Unlike Marshal, no hands would serve to pillow her head. Hands would instead find purchase upon her bodice, fingers overlaying each other, her hair left to collect and cascade in whatever way it saw fit about her head. Her gaze would sweep across the stars in search of familiar points of starry reference, "Do you believe in heaven?"

What Heaven Looks Like
Stunning Banner by Winnie Harper@Evelynn DecipioWithout a word, his invitation was accepted. Even as his eyes panned across celestial depths, her soft presence brushed across his other senses when she settled onto the grass. Lavender mingled with pure night air, an ethereal breeze that passed into his lungs with a whisper of her scent, and a familiar promise of what might come if she would only move a little closer. The assurance was always there, yet the framework for its conception - it seemed - would ever remain a murmur on the wind.
Amusement creased his features at her response to his humorous foray, mingling with inquisition as his eyes lolled sideways in an attempt at remembrance. The comment seemed entirely familiar, yet its origin would not be redeemed in his mind at that time; the only thing of which he could be certain was that Eve had returned his joke with comedic banter of her own, and any such moment was one to be treasured.
In place of a reply, a snort of laughter would be thrust to the night, though determination burned with an irritation that he couldn’t quite place the quote. It would come to him, surely.
The enjoyment that curled his lips would soon depart, however, upon deliverance of the deeper question occupying Evelynn’s thoughts. A lump formed in his throat, sucking any moisture that resided there dry. His gaze remained on the stars above, yet each one faded to naught but a blurred streak in the great expanse of endless oblivion, as vision bowed knee to overlapping reflection.
Was there truly anything beyond that blanket of gloom, embroidered with diamonds that shone upon a veil of obscurity? Was it simply that? A void of nothing, offering pinpricks of hope to conceal the harsh reality that all existence was ultimately conceived for naught?
Of course, he knew that it was not merely a decorated curtain for the viewing pleasure of their insignificance. Above the earth, and yet below, surrounding them with eternal worlds exceeding number, were the heavens.
But what did that mean - the heavens? Was the word merely to denote the vast concourses of celestial bodies they could never comprehend, or was there yet a a broader implication? One of a being - or beings - omniscient in nature and miraculous in power. Of a home beyond this world, where souls found life everlasting, and where those they’d loved and lost endured. Where his words may still drift to the waiting ears of his sister - his inseparable companion.
He’d considered the question on many an occasion, though most such happenstance resulted in deeper uncertainty than before, leaving him more baffled than ever, confused where to turn. And so, it was generally cast aside prior to further consideration. But not this time. This time, he was not alone. This time, another voice had intoned the query he was too afraid to ask himself.
Swallowing the lump in his throat, he managed a sincere, ”I don’t know.”
Rolling his head toward her, he let his attention roam. Across her hair, splayed carelessly in variation to the luminous waves of grass upon which it flowed. Over her fair skin, delicate and sublime beneath the pale sheen of the sky’s denizens. And into her eyes, where platinum shone like frozen flame, as the storm within settled into the moment for a brief stay of peace.
”My parents have never really talked about it, to be honest,” he went on before rending his gaze from her. The fanciful image above faded once more, his focus sinking inward as he added quietly, ”Especially not since…” The conclusion to the sentence was lost to the trailing breeze, carrying it away as though dragging from sight what never should have been shown. He cleared his throat. ”What about you? Do you think there’s something waiting for us up there when we die? Or is this just… it?”

───•─•────────────────────────────────────•─•───
───•─•────────────────────────────────────•─•───Her question was met with naught but silence. Nearby, the breeze blew through the canopy of the trees surrounding their little hill in the clearing, the leaves rustling in a melody to lull the mind and ease the senses. The soft chitter of crickets hidden somewhere unseen played against the distant laughter of children who hadn't quite settled down to sleep in their tents. Now and then, an owl would make itself known—perhaps one of the students' companions roosting within earshot.
It reminded Evelynn of home in many ways. On the outskirts of her small little town, she straddled the line between rural and urban. Their property contained only a few permanent sources of light, however, and the back fields offered an excellent getaway from the house to lay and watch the stars. Without the light pollution of a city, they always counted in the immeasurable. Much like now as she picked out a few of the more identifiable constellations. She always found it easier to ground herself in nature. All the better in the company of Cassie. But she supposed Marshal was a decent replacement. When he wasn't being overtly extroverted, anyway.
Silence continued to span. It wasn't as though he always spoke before thinking, but she couldn't recall an occasion where he'd spent quite this much time in thought before replying. The lioness rolled her head in Marshal's direction just enough to catch sight of him from the corner of her eye. His gaze remained fixed on a spot high above him, his expression vacant and distant. He was very much lost to thought. She was almost willing to wager that he hadn't actually heard her. His response came just when she had primed herself to repeat the question.
Given how intently he'd been staring at the sky, she hadn't for some reason expected him to turn his head towards her. When their gaze met, something flopped briefly at her core. Feeling almost as though she'd been caught red-handed, the faintest dusting of a blush coloured her cheeks, all the more so as she seemed to fall under a gentle scrutiny. Surprisingly, she wouldn't be the one to turn away. In a moment, he had continued, pulling his focus back to the heavens as he went on. A movement Evelynn would soon emulate. Brows furrowed, her silver gaze dancing across the profile of his face trying to glean meaning from the words that had been left unsaid. It wasn't the first time that he had almost said something. She thought about pushing him. Asking him to finish his thoughts and finally just put to words whatever it was that he'd been keeping back. But she didn't. Lips crimping, she exhaled a quiet sigh and peeled her gaze from him back to the void of mystery above.
"I don't know." The tone of her voice echoed his own when he had first answered, neither dismissive nor overtly wondrous. Just a simple uncertainty. "I used to believe that if we conducted ourselves according to scripture... that if we were good and just, that we would ascend to live in the presence of the Father." It was strange, making mention of her faith. The topic wasn't one that often came up, and if it did, she had often held to the tendency to skirt around her own personal inclinations in favour of keeping her distance from being immediately pegged as a muggle. "But I think coming to Hogwarts has challenged that somewhat. Much of the evidence surrounding the Bible is unraveled with the realization that magic and wizards and witches exist. All of the miracles can be pretty easily explained..."
A somber air descended upon her as she spoke. Although it wasn't the first time she had reflected on the flimsiness of her faith in light of the magical revelation, it was the first time she was sharing such notions with another or putting them to voice. Beyond blasphemous, it almost felt as though she were inviting some sort of doom to fall upon her. The disappointment in herself, in her doubt, and the loss of that concrete certainty... it hit her harder than she might have expected. "I'd like to believe there is." Hands dragged away off her chest to arc down to the ground beside her where fingers started encircling themselves in blades of grass. "I dislike the idea that all of our suffering in life is for nought."

What Heaven Looks Like
Stunning Banner by Winnie Harper@Evelynn DecipioA trace of uncertainty touched the night air, threatening to disturb the peace that had settled on the hillside. Wafting ever so subtly in one voice, then mirrored in the next. Breaths came and went with the breeze, carrying words that questioned precisely what that radiant world above had to offer.
The stars mingled in their endless concourses; some winked at him, as though promising that there was more to them than visual splendor, if only he sought for it. He stared back in wonderment, irises alight with their glory as Evelynn’s thoughts washed over him. Her past beliefs were laid bare, yet tempered by the knowledge she had acquired, calling them into question.
He hadn’t oft considered the implications of magic in comparison to traditional religion. He could understand the struggle - in attempting to lay parallels between the two - though his understanding of the latter was admittedly limited; not to mention the former.
“I can’t say I’ve read much of the Bible.” The confession was uttered into the emptiness that trailed her concerns. His head lolled toward her, hazel irises falling upon her features once more. There was something within them, a sort of regret, made pallid and absolute in the moonlight. It made his heart ache in a way that loneliness or insignificance never could. No, it contrasted the silent agony that one might face in moments of self pity or reflection. In that moment, the soul-rending pain of missing one he’d lost subsided. Rather than wishing for that pain to end, he simply longed to reach out, to quell any suffering wrought in the heart of this person who lay beside him. Somehow, he felt that if he could make her feel better, then everything would be better, as though some universal wound would mend, and they could heal together.
“But I do know that it gives a lot of people hope.” Perhaps his efforts would fall listless and ineffective, but even still, he would do anything he could to stopper the bleeding of this wound. “Hope is always a good thing, I think, even if it’s for something that isn’t there. It keeps you from giving up, because there’s always that something to look ahead to. I don’t know how magic and the Bible could go together, but maybe there is a way. So let’s just keep on hoping that there is, and that up there,” he lifted his free hand to indicate the brilliant lights above, “there really is a heaven.”
“I’d like to believe there is.” Evelynn’s response came almost as a reaffirmed desire to dream, of something that couldn’t be seen, nor heard, but still offered so much peace to a weary soul.
A soft grin pulled at his lips, an outward glimpse of the warmth that pooled in his chest. His gaze was tugged back to the firmament as she continued. A nod signaled his agreement before he let his lofted hand fall at his side. There, it bounced lightly on the grass with a quiet thump, then brushed against something soft.
Curious after the object he’d bumped, the boy grabbed at it for a proper feel. And only then did he come to understand exactly what he was fondling.
Smooth as silk, Evelynn’s skin sent a rush of electricity up his arm and directly into his heart, jump-starting the organ in such a way that might have revived a flat-lined patient. In the instant he had groped for understanding - or perhaps even the next, as some subconscious instinct took advantage in a very purposeful manner - his fingers had laced perfectly through hers, enveloping her hand from behind and pinning it gently to the ground.
Once realization hit, he would jerk his own hand back to his side, flattening himself against the grass as if he were a prey animal, and her potential ire the predator. Once the reflex passed, however, he would glance back at the girl, his grin taking a sheepish turn.
Embarrassment colored his cheeks, though the passing wind would take no notice. Instead, it ruffled the foliage once more, again playing that tune of serenity. In its wake, he allowed the chagrin to fade, carried into a night that would not let its peace be disturbed.
Were she to turn his way, he would lock eyes with those of a stormy hue, smile shrinking back to its tender shape.
Overturning his hand so that its palm greeted the sky, he would slide it slowly toward where they had met in brief physical touch. Had she not retracted it, his thumb would lightly brush hers as he spoke, inviting the contact to repeat if she chose.
“No matter what happens after this life, at least we get to share it with people who make it worth living.”
