You seem a bit... Fishy? Pet

Before his arrival at Hogwarts, Gregor had begun to feel a bit left out during the time in his life. He traveled a lot, was an extrovert, and had a terrible need for conversation with anyone almost every hour of the day. He could feel himself possibly going [more] mad by the moment as time passed on. He needed a companion, but he wasn't always in the search of love or a lifelong partner. Perhaps it was the perils of his previous journeys that made him worry too much and build a relationship, or perhaps he was afraid he wouldn't be the best choice to be beside anyone. There were a lot of excuses and weak reasons, but it only lead to Gregor feeling more dreadful at the moment. His fear and depression of being alone once more on the bright morning of his birthday made him feel extremely cold despite the sun's warmth. He walked down Diagon Alley, to remind himself of his childhood and experiences before having graduated so many years ago. The numerous students his age, the many friends he had, the absurd amount of ice cream they ate, and of course the place where he found his very first friend.

The words "Magical Menagerie" brought back the deepest and saddest of memories for Gregor upon that day. He entered with a look of being lost and rather clueless, like a child having walked into a new land of treats. He greeted the store owners with a weak smile, and certainly something could be seen wrong in his facial expression. They briefly spoke, as Gregor said he was merely searching around for a bit. The ferrets, cats, frogs, tarantulas, and bunnies didn't quite catch Gregor's eyes as none resembled his first ever pet which was taken by time long ago. Eventually, he came across the very same animal, and he couldn't help but have a few tears bugling up in his eyes. A grown man about to cry over a goldfish, he must have seemed extremely childish and unprofessional for his age. Gregor once had a goldfish of the same appearance when he was a much younger boy. It was his best friend too who he could speak to all the time. They could both speak with each other all the time, tell the best of jokes, and of course, bask in the sunlight together. The other Slythryns didn't understand Gregor's amusement with such a creature when he was young, but that didn't stop him. Upon his first pet's passing, he never quite found someone or something to replace that hole in his heart.

It was his birthday, and he was only going to feel more lonely as time went by. The light of the shop glistened on the fish's scales, and Gregor could just tell they were going to have the best of adventures together at Hogwarts, "ShopKeep! I'll take this one right here! Please throw in a can of treats and one of those enchanted carrying cases for my new friend here too!" [WC 511]
