Valentin ran down the hall en route to intercept Charles between classes. He knew the blonde’s schedule well, and there was only a small window of time to catch him today. Breathing heavily from having just scaled the dormitory spire at top speed to snag the boy’s leather jacket from off Val’s bed, the seeker skidded to a stop in a side hall. There Charles was, staring out a porthole as he leaned against a wall. He didn’t seem to be in any particular hurry to get to class.

“Hey!” greeted Valya, bent with hands on his knees as he caught his breath. The chaser’s leather coat hung from Valentin’s left arm in clean condition, but something was off about it. Further inspection of one sleeve would reveal a series of rips cleaving straight through to the inner lining, but Valentin was too tired to notice. He had barely gotten any sleep last night and was running on fumes… as a result, he’d totally forgotten to finish repairing the coat before reporting for pre-dawn training. “Char, look what I found!” Standing up straight to hold out the black leather jacket, Val examined the other boy. “Is there something on your mind?”

Classes meant uniform. Charles decided to bend a rule or two, opting out of the uniform for some casual clothes and a leather jacket... a lighter shade of black... newer... fresh... it didn't contain nearly as half of the memories that his other one did. The one that he lost that night... the night of the storm where Niffler have been- and where he got the spiderweb scar across his back... that jacket now lost... lost with the memories and moments he experienced with it. Stained with tears and laughter. A reminder of who he once was.

The teen found a seat near the back of the class. A dark corner. Cut away from the rest. Head hung over a leather-bound journal. Pen in hand, lightly tracing lines. Sketching. His ears shielding his mind from the words... the voices of the others... losing the connection he once had with the world around him. Eyes fluttered, filtering in images of his journal and the sketch. Fading the others away.

The class continued on. Charles in the back, shading in the sketch as others laughed. Conversed. He told himself he didn't need it... the socializing.... nearing six feet, his eyes could see the front of the room. Students in pairs. Everyone in pairs... Everyone except for him. Alone as usual.... another class spent with his nose in his journal. Acting like an nerd probably why he lashes out, to show he isn't one not with his grades at least.

The end of the class came. Charles marked an final spot, lifting the pen, he eyed the finished product. A boy leaning aginest a broom on a field. The boy seemed to resemble the captain of the durmstrang team... the frosted niffler.... Valentin Schnell.

Charles eyed the drawing. His fingers dropping to the paper. Lightly rubbing then aginest the drawn face of Valentin... his fingers trembled at the touch... swallowing hard, he firmly placed his hand to the page when he tore his eyes open at the scene above. Others passed on their way out, casting looks, the teen closed the journal quickly and shoved it into his bag followed by his other items.

Students passed the blonde. Sending glares. Charles would return each, a unblinking one of his own till they passed. Lifting his bag, setting it over his shoulder, raising from his seat as he fell into step. Behind the group of students. Stepping through the classroom, passing the threshold into the hall.

Light emerged through the hall from the windows. The end of winter it felt.... watching as groups formed, clustered together in the hall to talk amomg themselves to their next class.

One hand on the strap of his bag. The other by his side. Walking alone, slowly through the hall, sticking out as he wasn't in uniform nor with another. The teen walked. His eyes passed by others, mind focused elsewhere as his shove brushed... pushed past others... not looking back or muttering a acknowledgement to them as he walked.

The teen found his eyes gaze about, walking to his next class, a group of four lads lingered on the side. Casting glares... whsipers at others... Charles followed them with his eyes. Heart pounding... humming in his ears... forcing a breath as he walked over, coming to a halt in front of the four lads.

"What," Charles voiced. A single word. His tone neutral. Contained, his eyes darting between the four. Staring. Whsipers. Snippets of words exchanged between the four. He felt his free hand curl to a firm fist, stepping back as he steady himself then propelled forward. Connecting fist to nose. One of thr lad stumbled back a bit, the other three stared.

Charles took control of himself, stepping back as he spoke"there, something to stare at now," his words short. Mundane. Turning on his heel as he continued his slow paced walk down the hall to his next class.

The glint of the window. Charles neared it, leaning to the wall. Eyes shining out the window. Others passed... walking to their class... moments left... soon only a few footsteps could be heard. Charles stared out the window. The glint... reflection... eyes back on him... who is this person? The one staring back at him?

Footsteps. A single pair. Growing louder. His mind faded them with the rest until he heard the voice. One he couldn't ignore.

Shifting his weight, stepping from the wall as he looked. Valentin apporching with teeth marks on his neck... his leg chewed.... the teen eyed him, wider eyes than before as Valentin grew closer.

His words. Of excitement. Of one you would hear from a puppy bringing his onwer back a lot show or item. The nickname. Char. Only Valya called him that and it warmth him... staring at him. At Valentin. He felt his heart beat faster.

The words. Asking him... Charles felt himself blurt, "what the hell, Valentin," reverting to English in times of worry or stress. Something only those close would know about him... those such as friends or close team mates. The teen eyed Valentin, hia eyed clouded of worry... fear... the once happiness of seeing his fond jacket now gone, replaced with concern for Nif.

"What happened? Who did to you?" Charles asked his voice seeking answers. Eyes staring at Valentin. Mind switching between English and Russian in a panic, "I swear if you went back to the forest, Frost.... your life means more than a jacket, much more," his words laced with something more... softness... care...

Opening his bag, drawing his wand from it's depths. Holding it in his right hand. Shutting the bag, ensuring his journal with the drawings stayed within the bags walls. The blonde would take a step closer, the space between the two slowly fading. Eyes meeting Valentin's. He swallowed.

"I appreciate you going back for my jacket and could never repay you but will try but... but you are far to loved and cared for to return to thay forest, Val," Charles felt the words leave his tongue, the healing spell, epsikey at the ready for Niffler, the blonde stared at the white hair as he spoke"promise... promise me you won't return to that forest again but if you do at least let me know so I can come with just in case... to help..." he would dsrt his eyes away... red flushed his cheeks... rubbing at his neck for a moment.

The teen looked back, a sudden rise of his hands to Valentin but he won't touch the lad or cast a healing spell upon him without his word as he spoke"may I?"

"What the hell, Valentin," chided Charles in English. "What happened? Who did this to you?" The blonde’s code-switching immediately revealed emotional turmoil to his captain.

Valentin’s chin tucked down in surprise. He hadn’t been thinking of his own damaged condition, only his hope of seeing Charles happy with the return of his clearly well-loved jacket. Sleepy Valentin drew in a slow breath, his eyes skipping across the jacket’s newest tears with blind speed. He failed to notice, failed to remember these as well.

“Ey, Char, it’s… Hey, now…” stumbled Valentin as his long white eyelashes fluttered.

"I swear if you went back to the forest, Frost.... your life means more than a jacket, much more." Valentin’s cheeks drew a hint of pale rose at the nickname. They had drawn close since the crash, hadn’t they? Valya should be happy, he thought. It was all he ever wanted, to be close with his team, to see them victorious, joyous… That’s what’s missing, isn’t it… He suffers, still. I cannot rest until…

Valentin’s eyes closed gingerly, heavy as his head spun with uncertainty. No, certainly much more was missing. The seeker’s arms crossed his chest and he shifted his weight backwards. Heightened throbbing of the dull pain in his neck and leg, paired with the sound of Charles drawing his wand out of his bag, stirred Valya’s focus-- and the blonde stepped in close to meet his widening gaze. "I appreciate you going back for my jacket and could never repay you but will try but... but you are far too loved and cared for to return to that forest, Val."

Valentin gulped. Loved? Had he made a mistake? Blinking twice, and twice again, Valentin shook his head. He had done this for Charles, and Val was fine, right? Wasn’t it worth the risk, to see him happy? Fog crept across his mind as he tried to focus on Charles’s eyes to keep himself grounded in the moment. Had he been reckless? Had he let them down, endangering the greater mission of his friends’ immortality? Valentin couldn’t help but doubt himself now, under the brilliant candor of the blonde’s assertions. He had a point. Valentin tucked the coat onto the strap of Charles’s bag with a disbelieving grimace of shame.

"Promise... promise me you won't return to that forest again but if you do at least let me know so I can come with just in case... to help..." Charles flushed, turning his eyes away.

“Char, you… must know…” Val pressed on in English, hoping to soothe the blonde by holding fast to a single, more comfortable language. His mind reached for the words, but everything felt sluggish. It would be so much easier for Valentin to communicate in his own native language of physical touch. Charles raised his hands and struck him with his blue eyes again. “Karlchen,” slipped Val’s unintended German diminutive for “Charles.” Why was Val’s head so heavy, greying the world with exhaustion leeching away its colors? It was obvious the blonde had deduced the majority of Val’s story without a word. That shouldn’t be surprising, thought Val. The team mates were used to reading each other after several years of sweating and bleeding together in quidditch. This is what Val had fought for. This is what he had wanted.

"May I?" offered the boy.

Valentin backpedalled towards the window, left hand scraping across a low decorative bannister until pushing himself up inside the ledge of the round window bay. This was not a structure intended to be sat in, but Val’s flexible legs bent to accommodate. As natural light glowed around his pale silhouette, Val’s metallic irises looked back at his chaser.

“Charles…” Why wouldn’t the words come? He had boxed himself in now, with the blonde directly in front of him. As Val touched the red-haloed bite marks about his neck, mostly healed but flaring up with a resurgence of inflammation, his shoulder twitched under the tingling pain. Why not let Charles finish healing him? It would be illogical to refuse-- what was this, blocking acceptance of the boy’s good will?

Val turned to stare at the chaser’s wand and found himself unable to pull his eyes away. He knew the boy would do a fine job, even if Charles wasn’t as reliable at casting as some peers. Val trusted him. The wand seemed so strange, though. So pointed. It didn’t make any sense to him. He shook his head to tell Charles not to cast his well-meaning spells. The fissure between Val and magic use sundered more by the day.

“Char, I can’t… I can’t stop myself. I know it’s dangerous. It pulls me in, the thrill. I can’t trust myself. I don’t… That kind of power…” he rambled deliriously. “I can best offer for join me when I must go, to the forest, the sky. Do we stop quidditch because it is dangerous? If I not your seeker, your captain, putting your life at risk for game… how can I not fight for your little joys, too?” Valentin’s usually lucid explanations warped as his English degraded under the strain. He laid his snow-capped head against the gritty stone of the window bay and closed his eyes. He didn’t believe his own words. His tone was that of a man trying to convince himself to do the same good he preached to others. Valentin’s arm slid down the wall, hand tilted open towards Charles in a self-stilted invitation. He wanted to be held, but he couldn’t really ask for it. Things weren't the same as when Valya was a little boy. Wanting another boy's embrace had become like playing with explosives. Besides, this was supposed to be about Charles and his happiness. What was it about the blonde that could lure out details about Val’s inner struggle?

“HEY, ASSHOLE!” yelled a Norwegian boy, approaching alongside the bloody-nosed kid Charles punched earlier. Apparently Charles’s brunette victim happened to have quite the tall friend. Yet, it seemed his other friends didn’t want any more trouble with the jacked British bomb, unceremoniously peacing out when the brunette called for reinforcements. “It’s time you learned some respect around here.” The Norwegian readied his fist, eager to throw the first blow if nothing was done to defuse the situation.

The mumbles. Words. The sounds from the frost captain.... ones that felt passed by as Charles expressed his concern. Care. For him. For his captain.... as for his position and as a friend.

The teen felt the words emit from his mouth.... his mouth moving faster than his mind unable to slow or stop the hurling train till German touched his ears. One language he learned long ago. The German word for his name, the teen felt himself stop before muttering back in German, "Jawohl Frost-Kapitän," the translation for the words he just said in German would be; yes, Frost Captain. The nickname he fondly took for the white haired niffler.

Charles caught his backpeddling. The teen didn't retreat. He eyed him carefully, carefully taking a step closer to Niffler. Wand in hand. Ears listening to the words at hand. To the heat of the moment. The words echoed in his ears, putting one above another? Simple pleasures... small acts of kindness... ones friends do for each other.

Quidditch, sure it was dangerous but that was why there is a team. To protect one another. To have each other's back, heed one another and keep them in sight. To help defend the others or cacth them from falling. You can't win a game alone.... you can't play alone.... but if you could then would it even be the same? Would winning feel the same?

Charles took another step closer to Valentin, leaning on the section if the window opposite of Valentin as he spoke"there is no harm in a dare or thrill, we all do it and quidditch fulfills that for some but-" the word felt faded. Lost. Stinging at the back of his throat as he shallowed, eyes on Valentin as he spoke"but for others it isn't thats why we have dares and thrills but Frost, you don't have to go it alone." His words growing a little louder with each beat that passed, with each minute ticking away.

"Quidditch is dangerous sure but your not alone. You- we are on a team, one that protects each other and watches for one another so we don't risk our lives and playing on a team isn't just for the safety of it," Charles spoke as his voice grew louder. His body strained as he pushed himself from the window. Standing in front of Valentin. Eyes on him as he spoke"when we play as a team, we grow and smile especially when we win. A victory isn't the same alone, alone even if we win then sometimes we feel like we lose..." His voice faded. His chest clenched at the words. His mind echoing as he sniffed back the emotions.

Wand in his right as he lunged forward. Grabbing Valentin by his shoulders, holding one in each hand as his emotions switched him from russian to english as he spoke"Hell, alone there's only a chance to get injured. There are multiple that would go on the thrills with you, including me so promise you won't go alone again! Frost!" A moment passed when another voice interrupted.

Charles back up immediately, wand in his right when his eyes met two figures. One, an Norwegian bloke yelling and the british bloke besides him, the one with the bloody nose that Charles might have been the cause of.

Charles looked from Valentin to the Norwegian as he spoke"as much as I would like to get bloodied up by walking rubbish, I'm sort of in the middle of something so could we settle this tomorrow during morining classes?" His words didn't help, perhaps he shouldn't have insulted the bloke who stared him down. Nostrils fairing. The Norwegian lunged forward, grabbing Charles by the collar of his shirt as the bloody nose boy shouted" now your dead! This is what you deserve for punching people, blondie!"

Charles ignored the whines from the boy as he attempted to step back a little from the Norwegian as he spoke"can't you brush you teeth? Nor a pleasant smell where I'm standing," The teen knew he should stop talking but his mouth wouldn't stop moving. The Norwegian raised a fist, hitting him square in the jaw.

The bloke dropped his hold on Charles, rubbing his jaw. The teen eyed the bloke and walked toward him, raising his fist. The blonde slammed it into the Norwegian's nose, the bloody nose kid watching. Now backing up. Charles pushed at the bloke, rising a fist again as hs slammed it into the bloke's eye.

The Norwegian shoved him off. Charles stumbled back a bit, balancing himself as he prepared for the Norwegian to rush at him. Dodging the second punch to the nose but not at the third. The fist hitting him in the eye, blinking as it started to glow a tint of purple and blue. The teen squinted a little as he swung again at the Norwegian. Missing. Stumbling back, bringing his hands to his temple to steady himself when the Norwegian swung amd nailed him in the jaw.

Charles felt the rush to his head, his bag swinging by his side. Ready to fall at any moment when the Norwegian swung again... then again... both hitting his jaw. The teen stumbled back, hand leaning to the wall. Taking a breath. Eyes on the Norwegian running over, sliding from the wall to allow the bloke to run into it.

Turning, Charles pinned the Norwegian to the wall. Swinging his fist. Punching once then another then another... all three hitting the bloke's guts. The teen held him to the wall, leaning close to him as he spoke"now, I suggest you leave as I said I'm preoccupied currently." The teen loosen his grip on the Norwegian, taking a half of step back when the Norwegian slammed his heel into Charles's ankle. A pop could be heard as pain shot up from the area.

The teen stumbled back a step, disoriented allowing the Norwegian to grab him and shoved against the wall. Pinning him there. Hands around his neck. The teen pulled at the hand as his bag got closer... and closer to falling... Falling and revealing his talent in the arts.

TW: Violence.

Valentin loved that Charles was a boy of many tongues, like himself but extreme. As the blonde muttered back in German, a wry smile passed over the albino’s face. He couldn’t help but take pleasure in such phrasing. His own accidental diminutive wouldn’t be lost on Charles, either, nor did the chaser retreat. No, he pushed in further even when Valentin had wedged himself into a corner. Charles had never run from him, not even in Valentin’s darkest hours. Even after all the months of hell following the seeker’s destruction at the hand of the giant, Charles never abandoned the wreckage of his team. When his mother died and Valya took to clinging to Yefim’s coattails, even then, Charles kept showing up. This was someone who nearly killed himself to save the goddamned reckless seeker from his own self-serving lightning crash. Sure, Char wasn’t perfect, but nobody was, and his struggle made him the type of guy that Valentin could strive for. One day, when this boy is immortal, I bet he will regard me just the same.

Why did Charles stay? Why had he always stayed? Valentin listened closely to the boy’s words. Everyone takes part in dares and thrills, said the blonde. No, Charles, not everyone, thought Valentin. It is because you think this way that you fail to see how special you are.

"You don't have to go it alone… A victory isn't the same alone, alone even if we win then sometimes we feel like we lose..." continued the blonde, practically taking Valentin by his beating heart and squeezing. The power of the boy’s words resonated like a scream in the echo chamber of Valentin’s self-isolating extroverted head. But, damn, if Charles didn’t have his number. Neither Yef nor Mik said such things. What the hell. He hadn’t known Charles truly enough to have mapped these depths, even after all the years of sweating and bleeding together. Who could say how many more intricacies squirmed under the skin of the explosive pretty boy?

Wand grasped in his right hand, Charles lunged forward to take Valentin by his shoulders, blasting into English: "There are multiple that would go on the thrills with you, including me so promise you won't go alone again! Frost!"

Emotion poured through Valentin’s chest like lava. This was exactly Valentin’s problem. Charles dug his words into the very cracks in Valya’s soul, and the seeker’s jaw dropped as the back of his throat petrified. Don’t go alone?… Don’t go alone? How was Val supposed to take on the weight of the world on behalf of his people if he didn’t shelter them from the risk, inherently alone where it counted? Hadn’t the giant crushed this truth into him, that he had to carry the team, sacrificing the joys and frivolities of youth for their victory-- fundamentally alone? How was Val supposed to handle it if he fucked up again, hurting Charles or killing him by taking him down with him? Destroying Team Durmstrang with my failure already brought me to the brink, but how could I survive killing Charles with my recklessness? No!

Yet, here was Charles, staring down into Valya’s essence as the chaser held him by his shoulders. However many languages they shared, in such moments Valentin trembled into his most comfortable form of expression: the physical. He closed his violet eyes, emotional slashes weaving through his torso, vivid like crimson, pale blue, and white. Valya shook with the sheer intensity of the moment, and he wanted to reach out and pull Charles towards him. He didn’t want Charles to feel alone, either, in the wake of Valentin’s exclusion. Yet, by trying to carry the burden alone, hadn’t Valentin made Charles just that? Valentin opened his lips to speak, but--

“HEY, ASSHOLE!” the Norwegian shouted, drawing Charles away as the blonde turned to face the threat.

"As much as I would like to get bloodied up by walking rubbish, I'm sort of in the middle of something so could we settle this tomorrow during morning classes?"

It was a noble attempt at restraint, but the words still cut at their edges. The Norwegian lunged at Charles to pull him by the collar, only for Charles to taunt him again.

"Can't you brush you teeth? Not a pleasant smell where I'm standing."

The tall northerner replied by bashing his fist into Charles’s jaw, flinging open the Pandora’s box of violence that Charles had unlatched with his words. The Brit and the Norwegian whirled at each other with raw destructive fury, towers of muscle tearing each other apart while the best thin Valya could manage was excluding the other kid from the fight.

Targeting the brunette’s already bloody nose, Valentin wanted to convince the kid he should be seeking medical attention right now, rather than contributing to the struggle. Valya’s fist climbed in an uppercut [d20 : 4] + 15 =19, but the kid had been expecting this [d20 : 18] + 3 – 1 [charmer debuff] = 20 and dodged to the left. The brunette retaliated by trying to grab Val’s head to pull him into a rising knee [d20 : 13]+2=15, but the seeker was accustomed to evasion and easily stepped backwards, out of range [d20 : 10] + 13 =23. Meanwhile, Charles gained the upper hand against the Norwegian, pinning him against the wall, only to release the boy with an attempt at mercy.

"Now, I suggest you leave as I said I'm preoccupied currently."

The Norwegian had no interest in humbly finding the exit, however, and with the slam of his heel and hands at the chaser’s neck, the northerner mashed the blonde against the wall into a choke. The bag slipped off Charles’s shoulder, exploding out with a splash of parchment and personal items. One leather-bound notebook spun across the floor particularly far, although it took little damage due to its pliable spine. It skidded to a stop upright with its most well-worn page laid open, exposed to anyone in range.

With his friend in peril, Valentin knew he had to remove the other kid from the equation as fast as possible in order to help Charles escape his choke hold. Taking a deep breath, Valentin closed his eyes and sighed. If he was going to do anything meaningful without his wand, of which only 63% remained after he’d yeeted it into a corner brazier earlier, Valentin was going to have to let himself go a little. It was a slippery slope after what he had done to Mikael, but Charles could choke to death if Val didn’t submit to rage. He would use it, even if it also used him.

Opening up his eyes again, the tension in Valentin’s face melted away. Not everyone could be immortal. The fabric of reality that constituted other people was energy in flux, lifeforce shifting from body to body as it ebbed and flowed. Valentin knew there was little barrier between himself and the brunette, comprised as they both were of atoms and ripples in the patterns of thermodynamics. Yet, however similar they were, Valentin had the power of choice, insofar as he could execute it. The seeker had a will of his own, and he would make this other boy submit to it.

Walking up to the brunette and staring into his eyes, Valentin reached one gentle hand towards the boy’s face. The boy couldn’t understand, but this was clearly wrong, and he smacked Val’s hand away. Undeterred, the keen edge of Val’s eyes shone with a derangement the brunette had never experienced before. There was really something wrong here, screamed the Brit’s gut, but he couldn’t just leave his friend after calling in his Norwegian to help.

The lanky seeker had little mass, but every inch of his athletic body rippled with supple skintight muscle. Valentin continued to walk forward at the boy, who pushed back with more than a rough hint of panic. A bizarre charm, a sort of magnetism, pulled at him from Valentin’s twisted gaze. Two drops of blood fell from the brunette’s nose as he grimaced, confused and disturbed. Inside the boy’s brown eyes squirmed his own private hell, but this specter of a boy was plunging himself into it without restraint even as the sound of Charles choking surely shimmered through Valentin’s mind.

Valya’s left hand reached out this time, as if to alight on the brunette’s hair, and again the boy tried to push away the white hand. Yet, in his panic, his aim simply redirected Valentin’s delicate fingers across his tan cheek. Brown eyes slammed shut, trying to hide from the burning of Val’s sadistic gaze. What the hell was wrong with this guy? The intimacy of it all… It was too much. It was like the boy was reaching for the brunette’s own personal fuse, feeling out his weaknesses by reaching through another plane of existence. Sixth sense shrieking in terror, the boy felt the hourglass spilling away his last chance of keeping this… demon… from developing a permanent fixation on him. At least a punch could be compartmentalized and eventually forgotten. The dark intoxication of this pale lunatic wormed into him through the seeker’s strange, magical eyes. This was the gaze of someone who could plan out the Brit’s demise so obsessively that there could be no error, no aid, no escape. That kind of death was sure to be as warped as this white phantasm’s apparently depraved mind. This was fucked up, and he had to leave. Now.

Abandoning the Norwegian to his own devices, the Brit ran as if from the Devil himself. Valentin sighed in pleasure and turned next towards Charles, whose face was white and losing lucidity from strangulation. Coming up slowly behind the Norwegian, Valentin cocked his head to the side to try to determine an indefensible angle. Then, like lightning, Val’s boot shot up between the boy’s legs to strike him in the crotch [d20 : 1] + 15 =16 ACC vs. [d20 : 10] + 4 = 14. The tall boy dropped Charles, clutching himself in agony as Valentin puffed a strand of long hair out of his eyes in dissatisfaction. Even after he had taken his time, his aim had been terrible. He couldn’t leave it at that. Valentin swung his open elbow for the Norwegian’s neck to pull him to the ground, but as severely stunned as he was 16, the northerner was simply too strong. Retaliating, the Norwegian’s fist snaked diagonally back at Val and struck him cleanly in the ear 360 dmg.

Black flashed through Valentin’s eyes as a ringing thrummed through his ears from the shockwave in his skull. Falling to the ground, Valentin naturally righted himself to face the Norwegian as he came around for a second taste. Before Charles could recover enough to intervene, Valya was already bolting back at his opponent. While Val’s head slurred from side to side with the hum in his head, he forced himself into a rising lunge, swerving between the Norwegian’s arms with a finger jab blazing directly towards blue-grey Viking eyes.

Ducking, the northerner escaped having his eyeballs gruesomely stabbed by Val’s daggerlike fingers and countered with a haymaker. Val rolled to the side and the hum in his head whirred into a high whine. Charles disappeared from the seeker’s awareness as Valentin’s focus eclipsed into dark tunnel vision onto the Norwegian.

“You’re not fast enough,” the northerner gloated, slicking back his sweat-drenched hair as he took a moment to catch his breath.

You’re right, thought Valentin. The kid’s accent was just like another Norwegian’s, his eyes the same oceanic color as the former chaser’s, and now he wore the same nauseatingly satisfied look on his face. It pissed Val off. The memories washed over the seeker, an unstoppable torrent: the conditioning he and Romeo put Val and the team through, the innocent distance in the former captain’s gaze, the nonchalance of his ignorant victory in outpacing Valentin. He had gotten there first and Val had run out of time.

Valya stared back through the peace as if looking at the sea’s farthest horizon. The fissure in the seeker’s silver heart-- those cracks Charles had been wedging further open-- crumbled wider under this Norwegian’s unwitting power. Hopelessness bashed at the gates of the seeker’s mind as his eyes drifted, eventually alighting on the fine buttresses of the boy’s thin neck. Val wondered if they were pretty things. Lines another boy would gaze at.

The moment seemed as frozen as the sea in the Norwegian eyes, as motionless as Mikael in the flames Valentin rained down upon him, as still as his mother’s kafan. What would the seeker have left, if Charles turned away the chalice of life Val sought to deliver him? What of Romeo, if he were to-- perhaps wisely-- reject the problematic philosopher’s stone? What worth could Valya have then, so alone after giving everything for a self-inflicted burden, burning down to nothingness in the night like a forgotten candle? Did it really have to be this way?

Valentin had already died once. Couldn’t he be granted one simple wish of his own?

Charles pulled at the hands grasped around his collar bone, fingernails pressing into the fresh. The blonde flattened his head aginest the wall, brushing his shoes against the ground. Looking to stabilize himself, to find a grip to stand.

His chest clenching as he forced breaths, the Norwegian not loosening his grip. The blonde pulling at the hand at hus collar bone. Pushing at the chest of the Norwegian, pushing his feet aginest the wall as he elbowed the Norwegian in the ribcage. Unfortunately, he was still pinned to the wall while his bag slipped from his shoulder and cuaght air. The parchment, books, feather quills, ink jars, leather-bound sketch journal and personal items spilling out.

Colliding with the floor. A sliding mess, the life of the blonde. Hidden and public now revealed to the public. To those he cares for and thise he fights... the journal falling open, to the page he was working on. The sketch of Valentin Schnell, skidding to inches away from the feet of Valentin Schnell.

One wouldn't guess the journal belongs to Charles. He never told anyone he drew or enjoyed art, a hidden talent that he always been too afraid to share. Afraid of the reactions he would receive. Afraid of what they would think... If one would flip past the page with the sketch of Valentin Schnell then they would see other pages with sketches of Johannes Sauer, Lysander Stavrou, Romeo Marchonné, Arjan Oberoi, Astrid Olsen, Madhup Hexum. The durmstrang quidditch team. Other pages contained students from his classes, from days when he was bored un class and would choose to sketch in the back instead of paying attention.

Those sketches would include the faces of Mikael Halldorson, Cielle Johansen, Yefim Rumyantsev, Elizaveta Mikhailov, and a few other of his friends who attended other schools. Cassie Heather, Drew Lycan, Rosella Sokolov, Haley Rose.

However, one thing would be clear from the journal. The sketches were mainly of Valentin Schnell, Haley Rose, Cassie Heather, Rosella Sokolov, Drew Lycan, and Johannes Sauer.

One wouldn't know this journal belonged to Charles until reaching the first page. Where in the bottom left corner, in minuscule lettering. The opposite of the blonde's handwriting. The lettering inscribed a name 'Charles Alluring'.

The teen pushed aginest the Norwegian, seeking a breath when suddenly he felt himself fall back. Stumbling aginest the wall. Kneeling down, relief flowed as he took breaths. Free from the grasp of the Norwegian, resting his head aginest the wall when he met Valentin's eyes then the scene unfolded om front of his very eyes.

The teen choose to find friends in othet schools. He choose to keep to himself, avoiding others. He choose tobstart fights and allow others to bloody him up. He choose this but he didn't want others to find injury for him, he didn't seek to cause harm to others. Especially his friends or team mates.

The blonde inhaled deeply, still trying to cacth his breath from a moment ago. Wiping at his nose as he pished himself from the wall. Exhaling, brushing back his blonde hair as he propelled himself forward and shoved the Norwegian's shoulder as he spoke"I think you should take your leave now, arse!"

When the Norwegian looked toward the blonde, Charles sent a rushing punch for his jaw. Stepping forward, hand taking the lad's shirt collar while the other found formation. Jetting out. Fist connecting with the Norwegian's jaw once... twice.. three times as he pushed him back in the hall.

For a moment, Charles seemed to have the upperhand until he brought a fist aimed for the Norwegian who swept his legs. The blonde stumbling over, caching himself on the ground when he met a kick to the ribs. Rolling over to his side as he felt another rush of his ribs.

Short words of exchange. The blonde stayed where he was. Afraid to see what other harm he placed Valentin into... this was his mess, the white haired shouldn't have to pay for it.

When the Norwegian would leave with his friend, Charles pulled himself to his knees. Starting to collect his things, eyes missing the sketch book as he pulled parchment and books along with school supplies into his bag. Eyes avoiding Valentin as he went through the motions, as he spoke"apologies- I'm sorry, I didn't and would never intentionally allow you to be injured. " Collecting the fallen quills and ink jars, a few personal items to be stored back into his bag.

After Val freed him, Charles lost little time before pummeling the Norwegian anew. Yet, the northerner still swept the Brit to the ground and began laying blows into his ribs. It was now a 2 v. 1, but the Norwegian still hadn’t opted to leave. What compelled him to stay when his friend had already bugged out? Valentin would find it, his weakness. It was what the seeker was best at, finding things. His favorite target? The secret workings inside of people, wherein laid the fulcrum of their entire lives. Everyone knew the seeker’s keen eyes could find objects, but only those who had met his unbroken gaze could gain an inkling of his greater power.

Charles bent with agony on the floor, fueling the hell-chaser’s anger as the Norwegian swung his leg for another blow at Charles-- all too alone. Valentin grabbed the northerner’s hair and pulled him backwards along his center of gravity 25 eva vs. 27 acc, sending the Norwegian flailing to keep his balance as the albino pressed his mouth to the boy’s ear with a sultry hiss. Locked into a vicious arm bar from behind 24 eva vs 30 acc, the Norwegian couldn’t move without breaking his forearm off his elbow.

“Have you ever wondered why so many students mysteriously stopped attending this school? Maybe it has to do with how… very… quickly a life can be taken with the slip of a wand. Accidents happen all the time. The problem is, some people just don’t know their limits. Have you ever met someone like that?” chuckled the white immortal, pulling harder at the arm bar and tearing the Norwegian’s tendons. “It’s funny. You don’t even appreciate how fast it can all end, do you?” Slowly, Valentin continued pressing into the arm bar and the Norwegian cried out in his native tongue. Val's hot breath coiled inside the boy’s ear as the thrillseeker dug his fingernails into the Norwegian’s flesh with an affectionate sigh. “When I truly know my enemy, well enough to defeat him, in that very moment I love him. That’s the only way to truly understand what they want, what they believe, before finally destroying them. I could get to know you even better, Hahn. Do you want to be my enemy?” asked the hell-chaser, thrusting his weight forward and breaking the boy’s arm off at its joint. The Norwegian screamed in pain and he sunk, collapsing into his knees. Yet, Valentin still held onto him from behind to support his weight, as if helping a friend remain standing. “Time to go,” whispered Valentin as he loosened his grasp.

With the power of an adrenaline burst, the Norwegian dashed away in terror. Why this demon should know his name was beyond him. For Val, it was just another pocket of information he had accumulated during his observations of Hanzo and his countrymen. This Norwegian wouldn’t approach Charles again, Val knew. The captain was an excellent judge of character.

Their aggressors gone, Charles began collecting his personal effects and Valentin stooped to help him. Valya’s long-fingered hands could hold a lot, and soon they carried back almost all the remaining debris of splattered ink pot, quill, and notebook to the edge of the blonde’s bag. There was just one item remaining afterwards, and Val squatted down to recover a splayed leatherbound notebook that lay open on a curious page. He saw his own face staring back at him and froze in place.

“…”

It was like looking through Charles’s eyes, through the power of his artistic expression. Val had always wanted to know how it was to see through the boy's eyes. It was not only the captain’s nature, but indeed the craving of his soul-- wanting to know what was inside of people. Valentin flipped through the pages, captive to the force of his curiosity, taking in the subtleties of Charles’s art. Johannes, Lysander, Romeo… even Mikael and Yefim… they were each represented here, the whole quidditch team and even people outside of it, but not in equal portions. Valya absorbed the relative amount of attention given to each person as his strategic mind tugged at the puzzle of Charles’s world. Flipping back again in reverse order, Val’s fingers stopped on the page showing Mik’s face. Not knowing why, Val extended two fingers to brush the ex-beater’s cheek in the picture. Cognitive dissonance shivered down Val’s neck and he stared, transfixed. It was like looking at a ghost, but why? Val’s face pinched with pain at failing to understand what the picture was doing to him.

"Apologies-" came Charles’s voice through the interdimensional warp. "I'm sorry, I didn't and would never intentionally allow you to be injured." Val blinked his silver eyes hard, trying to bring himself back.

“Karlchen,” whispered Valentin, flipping back to the most worn-in page reflecting his own face. “How lucky I am to know you.” Val’s head bowed back down to the page as he admired the depth, subtlety, and raw expressiveness of Charles’s inscribed visions. His art was simply beautiful. Val’s hands told the truth for him as he continued to flip back through the pages, not relinquishing the book with any haste. “I didn’t know,” he sighed, nodding with a sudden wash of exhaustion. The fight had taken a lot out of the already sleepy hell-chaser. “I want to know more. Show me more, please,” crept his words to a slow stop. Val looked up into Charles’s blue eyes and extended the notebook back at him with respect.

“I know you didn’t mean to bring harm... but you asked to come with me on my thrills. If you want that, you’re going to have to take me on yours, too. We’re in this together.” Val’s chest warmed with the sense that Charles had spent a lot of time considering him as he made this art. It made him happy, the boy’s uncontrived attention-- living proof that Valentin was not alone, at least, not while Charles still cared. To make art, one had to try to understand, to feel, and to some extent to love the object of one’s focus enough to put in the effort to capture it on the page. Truly beautiful art required the same as did knowing an enemy well enough to thoroughly vanquish them.

Charles kept his place om the ground, even when the Norwegian became distracted- taken back from Valentin's venomous whsiper. The teen felt his chest clench through breaths, forcing them to slow. Forcing them to control his emotions- anger. Clenching his fist to the ground as he pushed himself to his knees, chest clenching with the movements. Tightening at every inched he moved. The teen kept his eyes to the ground, the cracking of the floor caked with dirt and smudges. Eyes watching the cracks, fists breaking to feel the ground underneath. Reminding himself not to break, not to uncover the strange feelings he have been getting recently. The moments where he can barely breath, where his thoughts pound the inside of his mind, where he feels surges to lash out... to explode... tired of thinking, tired of hiding.

The teen reminded himself through breaths that he needed to keep that hidden. He had to. Turn those moments invisible for the ones watching, for the ones he cares for.

The venom filled whispers, the Norwegian scampered away, far from the area... not because of the blonde but Valentin. Charles pushed the thoughts aside, threatening to spill through as he felt weak. Guilty. At fault. It was his, fault, for the injuries that befell Valentin and yet he was still able to drive the Norwegian away... a act that the teen couldn't do himself.

The teen drove a hand through his hair, pushing it back along with the droplet of sweat that formed along his hairline during the fight.

Pushing himself upward, to his knees. Stretching for his bags, pulling items into his bag. Disorganization, without a order. Just wanting to collect his items once more, to collect the mask he once had. The one he wore to hide the moments of weakness he experienced, the tightness of his chest.

At the words, the bittersweet ones yet a sign of comfort from Valentin. The blonde looked up, momentarily forgetting his position and actions before the fight occurred as his ears cuaght the world and eyes cuaght the notebook. The one he used for sketches. That very leather-bound notebook in the palms of Valentin Schnell. The teen swallowed, the words of wanting to be seen more of the forbidden sketches of the leather-bound book. The teen pulled the rest of the items rather quickly into his bag, wanting to run now. To hide. To scream, even punch something as his chest grew tighter.

The teen pulled the final item into his bag, pulling the bag over his right shoulder. Taking the torn, worn out jacket that Valentin brought, into his hand to place over his right arm.

The teen stood in front of Valentin, eyes meeting the Frost Captain. The leather-bound journal. There were reasons why the teen hid the journal, the talent he held after years of practice within the artwork, the sketches he drew in his spare time. In the time he spent alone. The teen viewed the talent- the sketches as his downfall, of others knew about them... found out about the journal then the life he built up at the school. The mask he wore within thise walls. He was afraid that will all be destroyed, gone... the hope of finding a place at durmstrang evaporated in front of his very eyes.

"That-" The teen choked, russian became foreign to him for a moment as the english word escaped his mouth. The teen cleared his throat, brushed back his hair with his left hand. Holding the bag, jacket close in his right as his chest clenched. Grip felt shaky, weak than it was a few moments ago. The teen would reach out, taking the journal in his hand as his mind mind found the russian translation and spoke"that- that journal isn't-" about to say the journal wasn't his. A friend's. A lie, simple as that but he couldn't. Lying in this moment, to Valentin didn't feel the same as it felt when lying to others.

The teen felt his eyes rest on the white hair, the leather in the palm of his left hand as he spoke"the journal- sketches their nothing. A mere schoolboy hobby, really," Now lying to himself. It wasn't a mere hobby, at least not to him. The sketches were his escape, the chance to imagine another life. Another world for himself.

Slipping the journal into his bag, withdrawing his wand. The voice, Valentin's, the teen swallowed hard. He didn't want anyone, especially those he cares for, to risk their life. To go on dares, thrills for him.

Together?

The teen eyed Valentin.

Did he- no... he couldn't have but what if...

Thoughts ran along his mind. The act of thinking was causing his mind to ache, the teen wasn't the greatest at thinking. All one would need to do is look at his grades, allow the statement to be proven true. Defense and History, the two classes he could ever achieve an E at best in with the occasional O.

The teen felr his eyes meet Valentin's, slipping the journal into the depths of his bag. Wand in hand. The blonde stared ahead at Valentin as he spoke"I- your different." Two words, yet the impact that they have on the rest of the interaction. Of the conversation.

"Your the captain of the quidditch team. Your someone others like, want to be around. Your someone who others trust and protects them when needed. Your well respected within the walls of this school, others would give their lives for you. You- you are rather close to the roof," Charles spoke. Running out of words, ideas through a aching mind. Perhaps, a consequence from the fight that occurred moments ago? Words of sleeping quarters, where within durmstrang the closer is on to the roof meaning the more achieved they are.

"Others depend on you and you- your someone that means something to others, to durmstrang which I why I ask you to have someone accompany you on your thrills but you can't accompany me on mine. You mean more than them, Frost."

The teen spoke. His eyes drifted away, catching the glistening window. The light reflecting in, bouncing between the walls. The figures in the hall. The hall now seemed abandoned, classes must have started as the two stood there. Eyes looking for the window, Charles held his wand up as he spoke"Could I heal you, now?"

Valentin hadn’t intended to reveal the colddrake inside him, particularly in front of someone he loved. Would Val’s chaser now come to fear him, too, as did both of their opponents? Valentin’s vicious words were only a puzzle piece in his greater, almost inexplicable, powers of charm and intimidation. The use of such control was exactly what Val was trying to avoid every goddamn day, but here, he’d had to go and call upon his power for some base hallway scuffle… all because Valentin couldn’t bear the responsibility of wielding his wand. Pathetic.

Some captain I am, he jabbed at himself. It’s my fault Charles took so much damage. What if they’d used a weapon? What if they’d really gotten mad and cast the killing curse? It wouldn’t be the first time someone… Val veered away quickly to bury the memory of his father, the murderer. Valentin knew he couldn’t hide from the truth, but he didn’t have to deal with it now. Right now, he needed to take care of Charles, his dear friend who just took a nasty beating while Val was screwing around without his wand. At least Char wasn’t dead from Val’s personal issues. Face blank, Valya watched the British bomb take his journal back and stow it away in his bag. Although dodging the issue superficially, the presence of Valentin's father asserted itself through the boy as he switched to German.

“Not your art? Charles, even if your name wasn’t written on the first page, you show yourself with every sketch. Don’t hide from me, please…” Valentin eased, taking a step forward, silver eyes glinting with dangerous amethyst. “Let me see through your eyes.” The silver seeker took another step forward, and Charles drew his wand.

"I- your different," said the blonde. Valentin froze and averted his gaze. "Your the captain of the quidditch team. Your someone others like, want to be around. Your someone who others trust and protects them when needed. Your well respected within the walls of this school, others would give their lives for you. You- you are rather close to the roof," spooled the Brit. Valentin couldn’t deny any of it, but he didn’t like where this was going.

"Others depend on you and you- your someone that means something to others, to durmstrang which I why I ask you to have someone accompany you on your thrills but you can't accompany me on mine. You mean more than them, Frost."

The answer resonated in Val’s head like the Norwegian’s punch. Indeed, his ears were still ringing. Val wondered what it felt like for Beethoven when he went deaf. Was it true that beatings from his father contributed to that? Nothing like that could ever come of him, nor Charles… right? Yet, the memory of mutilating Mikael was never far from Valentin’s mind. I don’t want Charles to get permanently damaged from one of these fights, but the doctors will surely say it’s all fine and temporary… I just don’t trust them anymore. Not after my mother died. Besides, even if people could completely go back to how they were, often they decide not to. Think of Romeo’s ear. Hell, even I keep all of my scars so that I never lose those moments and lessons. Is it really okay for Karlchen to keep getting into fights like these? Punches are different from magic, right?

"Could I heal you, now?" asked the blonde. Val’s ear kept ringing, head pounding from the damage.

“You are kind to offer, Karlchen, but you are hurt even more than I. Here I am, without a wand, not even able to heal you in return… I…” Valentin wanted to apologize but he wasn’t even sure he’d made the wrong choice. Certainly Charles took a lot of physical damage because Val was slow without his wand, stubbornly unwilling to use magic. Yet, wasn’t magic the greater threat, capable of permanently altering another’s mind, like Mikael’s? Val had obsessed over it all too much, to the point that anything he said or did felt controlling, manipulative. With a sigh, Val examined Charles’s blue eyes. Valentin would wither away to nothing if he didn’t live alongside his people, through all their thrills and mundane tasks. Even the captain had needs, and he had learned from his eating disorder that it was impossible to take care of others if he didn’t get what he needed, too.

“I appreciate your logic, Charles. It’s true that I have to think of what is best for everyone. A lot of people depend on me, and I can’t treat myself as expendable at least for their sake. Just think of it, though, I didn’t get to be this skilled from staying on the common room couch. I’m this good because I keep failing and healing, learning and getting back in the game. I could grow a lot from being on your adventures, and then wouldn’t that extra strength benefit everyone in the end? I just have to be careful not to screw up, at least long enough to…” Oh, no, was this really the time to tell Charles about his secret plans? He’d almost said it, too, his wish for the blonde and Romeo. Putting his hands on his hips, Valentin smiled with an inaudible laugh. Inside he was hurting like hell from Charles’s denial, but maybe it wasn’t over yet. Maybe Charles wouldn’t keep him separate, alone… maybe Val just had to convince him…? The smile faded from Valentin’s face. He shouldn’t be looking at this boy with his hypnotic purple eyes. The only company Valya wanted was that which he deserved, earned without using his charms. For all the power it once lent him in winning people over, recently the threat of Val’s charisma coming out only kept him isolated and lonely. Valya locked the colddrake inside his inner dungeon specifically because he only wanted to be loved for who he really was, without using such enchanting energy. Knowing his own power made Valentin reluctant to take what he wanted, even when it was in everyone’s best interest.

“I just can’t be accepting your healing when… that’s not the thing I really want from you.” Stepping back once, twice, Valentin feared he’d said too much. Heart pushing him forward but restraint yanking him back even harder, the captain resolved to take on the burden alone if Charles didn’t come back around on his own. Val wouldn’t impose himself on Charles and his private adventures if he were not invited in. It was hard enough to keep his keen eyes from watching too much of Charles’s personal life from the sidelines.

“Are you afraid of me? Is that really why you don't want me to come with you?" Valentin shoved his hands into his pockets and leaned against a wall, regretting that his slowness in the fight was now encouraging Charles's delinquency in not attending class.

“Actually... you know... we should really get to class. How else are we going to enjoy quidditch, if we don't get that out of the way first?"

Putting his arm around Charles's shoulder, Valentin walked with the boy until the blonde disappeared.
