Don't look back Marina reminded herself again. Trying to get a view of the entire race wasn't going to keep her on her broom.

Part of her wanted to just ignore the obstacles and the people and experience the mindless happiness of flying. The idea of getting attacked by an angry tree kept her completely aware.

Athena took off, racing to keep pace with the other racers. She would not—could not—fail her team. She had prepared before hand and could recite the units and their challenges in her sleep.

Just keep your eyes ahead, she had to repeat as the other racers fell behind her. She had had little to know trouble in the past units and hoped that she could say the same—or better—for her teammates. The griffin doors were brave, but she was determined to be loyal to her house. All her training had lead up to this race. She felt the high stakes, and pressure of being away from the home course.

Broom Racing Moderation

When the dinner is cold and chatter gets old, you ask for the tab. Or that moment again where he’s insisting that friends look at each other like that. That old familiar body ache, a snap from the same little break in your soul. You know, that it is time for another broom racing moderation. A little friendly recap from the last mod. Hufflepuff did okay and Gryffindor did not so okay. For a detailed recap, refer to this post right here which, mind you, is very not mobile friendly.

There will be lots of violent stuff from both of the houses. It seemed like there was some bad blood going on between the two. Hugh Lowe, our friendly neighbourhood part giant, still decided to not move an inch and keep the acid spitting creature, the bundimun, company. In the last round, he failed to throw his signature projectile at Jack. This time, he switched targets, still another badger, but not the charming Jack Warren. Will he fail again?

Hugh was so tall and handsome as hell. He was bad and he did it so well unlike last round. This was no poke on the shoulder, it was Hugh and his insane strength. Poor Athena had to take quite a lot of damage from his throw. But this was not enough to knock her out, right? totally not foreshadowing what will come on her way

Following Hugh’s action of not moving a unit, the badger captain did the same. But he didn’t throw stuff at people, instead he chose a more magical approach since he was a wizard. Why use your muscles when you can wiggle your wand? Right George? Blindfolding the part giant was a great, incredible idea. It’ll reduce his accuracy if succeeds, therefore, no more projectile throwing, thus, no more bloodshed. Again, If he succeeds.

Ooh! What was that? A Hugh! And what was on his face? A blindfold! Eyes are the window of the world, without it, it would be hard for him to function on a daily basis, especially when he is not used to it. But perhaps his muscle memory could help him with throwing more stuff if he wanted to.

Next, we moved our attention to our queen, Xailah Alptraum. She too did something evil, cruel, and unimaginable. Actually, it wasn’t that bad considering we live in a magical world where safety was not even on the priority list. Immobilising someone was probably not as bad as throwing rocks at another racer, but it was illegal according to the law of broom racing the year of 2021. Simon Kincaid, the hufflepuff pretty boy with a massive fan base was the target. Unfortunately, it seemed like Xailah was not in his fanbase.

We hate cheaters. But we love good undetected cheaters. People should have known she was trouble when she walked in. Poor Simon would have to be a temporary statue for sometime. Unless someone from Hufflepuff or the Lion house is willing to bonk him on the head later, he’ll remain motionless, making him the easiest target to hit. Long story short, it was a bad time.

A couple units in front of Xailah, we could definitely see Athena in her Nimbus 1700 and Serena hidden in the foliages of her humongous tree broom. Both wanted to do something other than flying. Let’s focus on Serena first, despite her surname ‘Towers’ she was not towering the others. In fact, she was one of the smallest racers, but that was not important. Judging from the previous round, she proved to be the best racer compared to the others. But unlike the other barbarians, she didn’t want to attack her fellow racers. Instead, she was aiming for the near impossible vines. So, will her next action go in flames or will she maintain her awesome reputation?

Clap your hands everyone. Serena deserved a headliner article about her cool, insane, awesome, extraordinary, out of this world, racing ability. With her perfect casting, it will be such an ease to get through the nasty challenge not only for the badgers but also the lions. The vines that once were ready to snared whoever clumsy enough turned into something less threatening, all thank you to our new queen Serena.

The youngest badger racer, Athena was also ready to cast something at the Gryffindor most fashionable racing captain. But this was one of the least violent spells out of the stuff that we’ve seen people cast. Perhaps the girl just wanted to see Nicholas to shake it off.

A big contrast from the previous critical success from Serena, it seemed like she was a tough act to follow. Athena on the other hand wouldn’t see Nicholas moving his body like a professional belly dancer. The spell would backfire and hit herself. She could feel her legs and whole body start to move uncontrollably, but it wasn’t a pleasant look. It looked more like that freestyle dance on vine by that freestyle dance teacher but worse.

These violent actions will happen after we see everyone arriving at their end of round units.

Screaming, crying, perfect storms. Rose garden filled with thorns. That was exactly what was inside unit 11. We could see Nicholas, Della, Marina, Jack, and Simon were trying their arse off to get through the challenge. This would be tough for some, the thorns wouldn’t love them to the moon and to saturn. It would require quite a good accuracy skill to be able to fly through without getting some nasty scars in the process.

Poor Nicholas and Marina, both were corrosive and bleeding, what a torture. But it was their fault not being accurate enough, anyway, they will be fine. They’ve been the archer, they’ve been the prey. It was just the life of a broom racer. Everyone except Nicholas stopped in the previous round whilst he decided to zoom zoom some more, challenging the vines that will be destroyed by Serena later on. Afterall, he had awesome muscles like the rock, it would be like lifting a paper to break free from the vines if he’d be caught.

There was certainly guilt associated with leading the team that brutalised a girl in her first ever race, and Nicholas could not help but feel that emotion twang at his core. Even if Athena had tried to cast a spell to see him cast from his broom, he wasn't sure if she'd deserved to be sent to the blackness of unconsciousness. Sure, he had been one of the most vocal proponents of the strategy, convincing their allegedly gentle giant to play the part of trebuchet, but that didn't change the fact the pangs of guilt.

Still, there was a race to win, and there were still other Hufflepuffs who would no doubt prove to be issues. He was flying recklessly, desperate to maintain his lead, and it showed. Thorns tore at his skin, and vines threatened to strangle him as they wrapped around his throat and upper body. But strength training saw him able to break free soon enough, and with it came a clear sight of the whomping willow, and no sight of any racers ahead of him. He was in the lead. God willing, he would keep it.

Interacting with no one in particular

Serena slowed down a little, tilting her wand towards the upcoming vines. They were a pain in the butt if she was being honest. It would not be the first time that she had to deal with them. She had been caught in them before - breaking out was less than fun. With her teammates around her, she knew that they would likely need assistance.

Focusing on the vines, she raised her wand, "Diffindo," She muttered under her breath as she casted towards them. Clean cuts sliced through the vines, opening up the passage a little more. There was still plenty of them around but perhaps, just maybe, it was enough of a gap to squeeze through without being caught.

She sighed a breath of relief as she lowered her wand to look around her. WAIT. WHAT WAS GOING ON? In her moments of focusing on the environment and upcoming obstacles, she noticed chaos around her. Cursing under her breath as she saw Athena had fallen, she pondered if she should have been watching her in case. It was too late now but perhaps that would have been best. She was supposed to be protecting her teammates, that's what she did. Or at least, that was what she liked to think of her role as. She was not a leader, nor was she the one who planned to cross the finish line. Neither of these things was her job or responsibility. It was to protect and help others to achieve their dreams and she had let someone down. She cursed softly, gritting her teeth. Perhaps she ought to deal with the threat of Hugh Lowe instead...

Pine Chopper
This slender Scots Pine would make a fine Christmas Tree but this tree was modified with purpose. A metallic framed seat complete with windshield and stirrups has been added at the back, serving as the tree's counterweight. This sturdy, reliable tree that will definitely get the job done.

Ability: Immune to broken broomshaft.
This broom is intended to carry multiple people. When someone uses the catch option to rescue a falling teammate, they can catch one additional teammate in a given round. This broom can carry up to four users. If the user has the ability Catch then a user can catch an indefinite number of teammates in a round, but for each person they catch after the first there is a stacking 20% auto-failure chance. Returning users to their broom is a free action for the owner of the blue bottle, but those being returned to their broom need to use their action getting to their broom. Only one person can be returned to their broom as a free action (for the owner) per round, they can use their action to return a second user however.

George was quite amused by Hugh and his projectile-throwing antics when they were directed at Jack, but his gleeful grin dropped into a look of abject horror as he watched Athena get struck and fall from her broom like a rag doll. He gasped as he saw her dancing down there, still being sizzled with bundimun acid until she'd be attended to by staff. He felt a twist in his stomach - hm, perhaps he'd done a poor job preparing her for the brutality of racing. In fairness, there wasn't really anyone she'd practiced with that was so proficient with lobbing stuff at other people.

"You absolute monster!" George scolded Hugh, bringing his wand up to point at the half-giant. He was red-faced and visibly angry, his grip on his wand and broom leaving him white-knuckled as he spoke a clear incantation. "Obscuro!"

George wasn't feeling like the best captain in the world, looking ahead at the race. Nicholas had taken the lead - probably due to his spectacular choice in broom - even if it was only a slight lead. He hadn't caught what happened with Xailah, but Simon was looking undeniably stiff compared to the racers next to him. And in the back, Xailah, as sluggish and weird as her fat cat.

"Now you leave that over your eyes and think about what you've done, you bastard," George said. He was obviously half-joking, as the hint of a smile could be heard in his voice - but he was undeniably a little pissed off about the baby badger being victimized. Oh well. The race must go on!
