The cruel laughter that boomed from behind the fourth year seemed to respark the flash of anger that had been on his face before, bristling, furious. He took a protective step closer to Uschi, instinctively laying a gentle hand on her shoulder as he glared at the much larger children. His anger, however, was short lived, and he let out a sigh of relief and gratitude as the girl they were talking to turned to silence the class with a glare.

Green glanced at Lorelai and Constentine briefly, one eyebrow raised in amusement or approval or both as Constentine's prediction appeared to come true. If this girl wasn't a Professor, she was the next best thing.
"Yeah, we wanted help with making a potion to help Uschi." Lorelai motioned over to the trembling girl. She awkwardly added. "Um-If you don't mind me asking, who are you exactly?"
Green nodded in response to Lorelai's explanation. "Thank you for your attention, miss. We were wondering if you could help us with a project to help Uschi with her personal fitness goals. We simply haven't been able to find any information about appetite reduction potions or their safety," he shook his head, "and any pointers there would be helpful."

"But as a personal potions project, we were wondering if you could advise us as to whether we could use potions to moderate the innate magical effects of billywig stings towards less intensity but longer duration - that is, rather than causing someone to float, we would use them to create a brew that makes the drinker grow only a few dozen pounds lighter, but long enough to, say, walk up and down eight flights of stairs," he said, looking towards Uschi tentatively, afraid that he might be embarrassing her. His knees hurt just getting up to Gryffindor, and he weighed so little a breeze could knock him down; returning to the even higher Ravenclaw tower had to be brutal for Uschi.

Nevertheless, he was clearly holding back excitement as he continued. "I... have a tentative theory as to how it might be done," he volunteered. "But we lack the means, the experience, and simply the knowledge to know whether acting on any theory of ours might be sound, or even safe. That's where we were hoping a Professor might come in," he ventured cautiously, looking up at her with quietly hopeful eyes.

Constantine watched the scenario unfold, concern obvious on his features. Sure, it had been the student's fault that the potion had reacted that way, however it's contents had been extremely detrimental to those minding their own business. Sadly, the senior girl had not been one of them. Or at least, he wished the teenager had fell victim, until she began to clean up the classroom herself. Constantine shared an exchanged glance of confusion with the rest of the group - he was glad he wasn't the only one finding things particularly bizarre. Why would a student be cleaning up the class? His guess had originally been that she was a substitute teacher of some kind, like the ones he'd had at his muggle school, but it didn't explain why she'd pose as one of the seniors. Not to mention the fact that she'd snubbed the group's questions on the whereabouts of the Professor.

After seeing what she was capable of, Constantine didn't think questioning her authority would be helpful at this point. Although the senior probably wouldn't match the prowess of a professor, the Hufflepuff wasn't one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Her cooperative tone was met with some suspicion, considering her previous attitude, but Constantine ruled it off as trying to look 'cool' in front of the other students. "Yes, we'd really like to know if you could help us, or find someone who can." He nodded, backing up Lorelai's previous statement. Despite his initial resentment towards the girl, the last thing he wanted was for her to get in trouble because she was tampering with potions, unguided by a member of staff. He looked over to Green, who appeared to have thoroughly researched the idea. At the moment, the Hufflepuff felt a little bit like dead weight; he wasn't good at dealing with potions, it was far from his forte.

The explosion of the potion had Uschi stumble back in fear, and for a moment she almost ran away in horror. The senior students had screamed when the cauldron’s contents had exploded, and it wouldn’t have been hard for the seniors to turn on her, and blame her and her friends for the mishap.
But thankfully the senior girl seemed to take less interest in them, then, turning and scalding the already scalded seniors. Uschi watched with wide-eyed amazement as she gave them orders to report to the sick bay, then cleaned up the potions room with the skill of an adult. Who is this girl?
Though when her attention returned to the first years, her face burned with embarrassment again.
Uschi took a deep and comforting breath when Lorelai placed her hand on her shoulder. She was even more relieved to look over and find the Gryffindor beaming with barely hidden amusement. Then Green came to other side. With a friendly hand on each shoulder she felt the heat wash from her face a little, and she straightened her back, breathing deeply.
Personal fitness goals. That was a good way of putting it. It made her sound like an athlete rather than some giant lump of listlessness. “Nothing in the muggle world has helped me… get more fit,” she said, picking her words carefully. “I thought there might be some magic that would help.”
When Green mentioned a potion that would remove a few dozen pounds, she picked up the courage to add, “If… if we could be shown how to adjust the… erm… recipe, to change the amount of weight it removes, then that would be the best… I think.” She glanced over to Green for reassurance, hoping she wasn’t stepping on his toes.
When Constantine spoke up from behind them, she turned to give him a thankful smile. They'd only just met him but he seemed nice - it was nice that he wanted to support their efforts. That reminded her of something and she turned back to the senior, saying, "We would also like to know where to get Billywig stings from around here, seeing as they are native to Australia."

A much clearer picture was starting to present itself as I started to better understand the nature of their obtrusive visit. It was all in the name of helping the fat girl feel better about herself. How nice it must be to have such superlative friends who stood by you through your times of pettifogging woes, or who challenged a room full of teenagers meaner than yourselves in a moment of lunacy. Yet as far as my silent inquest had managed to glean, the four were as accordant as winter was to spring. They were not a pair you would expect to see together on a typical day. Suffice it to say, my interest had been roused.

I first shook my head at the black-haired girl, a ghost of a smile on display across my lips. "Is it not customary to first introduce yourself before asking someone else to do the same?" My retort saw only mere moments of breathing room before the smallest of the quadrumvirate chimed in. With every word that fell from his mouth I could not help but take note of how calculated they sounded, reminding me much of myself in day-to-day life. They were designed to ingratiate and lampoon concomitantly. Of the four, this one had garnered the vast majority of my attention. With enlivened resignation, I allowed them to conclude their barrage of questions, only speaking up once I was sure they had said all they needed.

Responding to the looming question that hung like a weight in the room, I finessed them with a bow. "Professor Valtome's aide, at your service." I straightened. "The good professor has entrusted me with overseeing his class while he is away on business. You will find that I am more than just a pretty face." This the final portion was addressed to all of them as I skirted the edge of the table on my way to a section of the room where the object of their scrutiny was kept. Enter three Billywig stings, dried and pre-crushed for convenience. Casting a transient glance in their direction, I ushered them to gather around the table with a small gesture. I placed the small bottle on the table and vanished behind the partially unlocked door to my storeroom, returning exactly seven seconds later with three pink candies in my hand. These I also placed on the table.

Finally, I waved my wand gently across the air, summoning a small cauldron and a sizable bottle of clear liquid. All of these were lined across the table as I watched the first years with a smile. Looking particularly at the one that reminded me of myself, I began. "Dried Billywig stings, a steel cauldron, some distilled water, and as you should already know, these magical candy known as Fizzing Whizbees." A strange mixture regardless of how one looked at it, but I too had a theory as to how such a thing as they were asking could be achieved, though it had never been tested. Without further ado, I cast a simple fire spell, placed the cauldron over the open flame, and poured the distilled water until it was about halfway filled.

"We may as well get inventive with this. I am under the assumption that you lot already know the basic properties of each material I placed before you?" It was under this belief that I never bothered to explain them. They seemed to already have an inkling as to what the Billywig stings were capable of, and the Whizbees were a popular treat. All that left was the cauldron and the water. While I waited for the water to start boiling, I explained. "The steel cauldron, in this case, was chosen for its inoxydable properties. That is, it does not readily combine with the oxygen in the air and as such, prevents the cauldron from accumulating rust or other such undesirables that could detract from our brew." It was a wonder they were all still using pewter cauldrons for brewing.

While we made the attempt at combining the ingredients I had procured, we may as well turn this into a learning exercise for them, and in part for myself. We were treading on unexplored territory after all, but my choices were based on years of expertise and a solid foundation. "Would any of you care to tell me why we are using distilled water instead of the standard potioning water? While we're at it, would anyone like to hazard a guess as to the reasoning behind both the stings and the Whizbees use in this brew?" How they may view this lesson being taught by a fourth year, I could not say. But as any good scientist knew, experimenting was in small part success, and large part trial and error. What I mean to say is, they may view this as being dangerous without the direct supervision of a teacher, but if they were truly as interesting as I believed them to be, they would simply roll with it.

"Hm? Yeah, I guess I was being rude. I'm Lorelai Brunelle."

The Gryffindor girl was pleased when the older girl began to start a potion. Finally, they were getting what they came there for. Although Potions was never her personal favorite, she couldn't help but be awed with the certainty about her the girl had when she was assembling the ingredients.

Lorelai was completely lost at the teacher's aid's questions. Her potion abilities were mediocre at best, although that was part in due to her lack of enthusiasm towards the subject. Besides, it wasn't like she came here to learn about potions. And was this material even taught in first-year potions? She didn't believe it was. She came to the conclusion that she was unable to respond to the question intelligently, and would make a fool of herself if she tried. She realized how perplexed she must have looked, and changed her expression to a more neutral one. Despite knowing that she had no clue what the senior was going on about, she chose to try to answer anyways.

"Um..."She began, racking her head for any clue as to what she was supposed to say. She couldn't find anything and looked towards the other students in her group. One of them was bound to have the answer. Maybe Green did. He seemed pretty smart. Lorelai stood there, waiting for an answer to arise from one of the other first-years.

""Is it not customary to first introduce yourself before asking someone else to do the same?"
Green flushed a little at the realization, tongue tisking unconsciously as he realized his faux pas. Charmless as he considered himself, etiquette had become his last bastion of social defense, and here he was, vulnerable. "My apologies, miss. Green, Rainier Green," he bowed his head to her in deference.

Green's eyes lit on each item as the fourth year brought them out, sparking with recognition as she explained the steel cauldron, then furrowing with confusion at the candies and her questions. How could sugar help with a potion that was, in every respect, meant to act as an aid to weight loss?

A sudden pain made him twitch, and he was hit very suddenly with a vivid, intrusive memory:
"What in Balthazar's bedraggled beard is this supposed to be?!" The ladle, still wet, banged hard against the wall where Green had been standing. Green shivered in a breath; he could feel the faint sting of boiling-hot droplets on his cheek.

"It's... you told me to set the iron ladle on the side of the cauldron, f-father," he said in a practiced tone, just loud enough to be heard clearly. His fists clenched. He could not show his fear. It only made the man angrier.

"Yes, on the side! Not inside to boil. It's not a damned bay leaf, do you even know what rust is, you lackadaisical simpleton? What's next? Did you eat pudding with it, too?" he mocked, sneering. The expression suddenly broke into a look of realization. "Actually, if it's to last a full half hour, that could work..."

Green blinked up at him in confusion, dazed. The older man murmured something about boiling time, then snapped back to reality, the snarl creeping back into his face. "Well, what are you waiting for, you lump? Go get the alembic! We need to do the whole thing over..."

"As an educated guess... it's all about boiling points," Green proposed aloud, squinting, remembering. "We need water without mineral or metal content, or we won't be able to boil it at a low enough temperature. If I'm correct there," he murmured, squinting at the candies, "Then we're using the sugar in the candies in order to increase the boiling point again after they've been introduced. Quite how that will affect the stings in the whizbees will probably depend on whether we crush the candy, or simply allow the sugar to melt away, but it will ultimately determine how long each portion of billywig sting takes to brew," he began.

"If I had to posit why we're doing that, then I have to move out of the realm of educated guesses and go into one of... just ordinary guessing," he wrinkled his nose, displeased. "But very tentatively, I'd guess that how long a portion of the same ingredient brews has an effect on when the magic in that ingredient takes effect. If so, we could add larger, more sugary fizzbees to increase the potion's duration further," he shrugged, looking entirely displeased not to already know.

Constantine let out a sigh of relief, pleased that the girl had offered to help. They were quite lucky to find such a helpful student, really, due to Professor Valtome's absence. He quickly headed to the table, not wanting to dawdle in front of such an important person. This could be one of their only chances to help Uschi, so he wouldn't slander it by wasting precious seconds of the senior's time.

However, his confusion was definitely the most notable. All the talk of potions and their ingredients had gone over his head completely, only recognising the familiar Wizarding candy. The Hufflepuff knew of their tendency to make people levitate, however failed to understand why they'd need both Whizbees and Billywig Stings. Constantine kept quiet for the time being, his limited knowledge not being helpful in the least. Neither the student nor the rest of the group would care for his uneducated babbling.

Instead, he listened to Green. The boy had seemed to remember something, or, he just simply excelled in potions. Either way, his hypothesis appeared to hold strong, in Constantine's opinion. He was fairly surprised at how in-depth the Gryffindor's explanation was - Constantine wondered if Green would've been able to concoct the potion himself, with a push in the right direction. In the hopes that the student would introduce herself, he offered up his name, but not much else to the conversation. "I'm Constantine...Babbitt." He introduced briefly, wanting to skip over formalities in favour of getting Uschi the help that she wanted.

"My name is Uschi," Uschi said, then stepped forward to watch the demonstration. Most of what was said went way over her head, though she was very impressed with the girl's lingo... and Green's, actually. She looked at the much littler first year with renewed appreciation, and flicked Lorelai a look that said whoa!
"How do you know so much?" she said to Green, and to the senior girl, Professor Valtome's Aid. Either of them could answer, or neither. She didn't want to seem ignorant but her curiosity had the better of her. She watched the now-steaming cauldron with fascination, and said, "Would changing the amount of stings or candies also change how well it works?"
Removing a few pounds might be fine for Green, and though it would also be useful for Uschi, she was hoping it would lift a lot more than that. The very thought made her heart beat stronger with excitement. No more aching knees, no more sore back. No more broken chairs or beds... well, depending on how long the potion would last, anyway. But at least she wouldn't need to stop after every flight of stairs or die of breathlessness. It might also help her with broom riding - a lesson she was particularly dreading.
It was tempting just to reach out and try some now, though the potion was barely finished.

Ms. Brunelle, Mr. Green, Mr.Babbitt, and...simply Uschi. All but one seemed to have been made cognizant of proper introductory etiquette from a young age. The final girl, Uschi, would not hear me refer to her by her given name, and seeing as I hadn't been offered a surname by which to address her, I would simply refrain from making mention of her directly, at least until such a time when I learned the name. While I waited for the answer to my question, I eyed Mr. Green expectantly, actually wanting to hear what he had to say on the matter. When the girl, Ms. Brunelle made a sound, I turned to look at her, almost shocked that she might be the one to come up with a theory but unsurprised when she failed to say a coherent word.

My eyes returned to Mr. Green, expectant, probing. His first words were like music to my ears as he deduced the answer on the spot. As he protracted his educated guesses my smile grew a fraction and my eyes squinted further in a manner akin to someone espying something of interest. Even after he departed from the realm of educated guesses, as he put it, I still found much of what he said to be learned beyond his current year. This one was precocious, and my favoritism could not be enshrouded as I all but ignored the others and explained seemingly to him and only him. "If I didn't know any better I'd be under the impression that you've already conducted all the experiments." True to my current persona, I kept up the ruse a little longer, taunting the boy while praising him in the same breath.

The water had now started to boil, much faster than hard water would have in a similar situation, confirming what the boy had said. We wanted the water to boil quickly at temperatures that would not greatly affect the powdered Billywig stings, which I now added in pinches until three of such were now swirling around on the surface. With a clean spoon, I began to stir. "I introduced the stings first to allow their crystallite properties to evenly disperse and bond with the water molecules." This didn't take long, for the powder was now an uneven swirl in every corner of the cauldron, and as such I quickly gathered up five of the larger Whizbees and added them to the mixture, continuing to stir. "It is as you surmised. We want to increase the boiling point at this point."

I peered down into the brew and was pleased to see the candies have already melted and that they were quickly adopting the nature of the Flobberworm Mucus in the sense that they added body and thickness to the brew, for now, I could feel the slight resistance against the spoon as I stirred. "As you saw I didn't retrieve a mortar and pestle before I started, which means I have zero intention of utilizing them. We want the sugary content to make the liquid thicker. Now I know you might be thinking that this is a poor substitute to actual thickeners, but it serves its purpose rather nicely in attracting the powder." If they peered into the cauldron they would see that the candy had now been completely melted into a syrup and that the undissolved powder of the Billywig stings was swirling around in the translucence.

"You've probably figured it out by now? It isn't how long a portion of the same ingredient brews that we're concerned with, but how receptive it is of an added ingredients. The Whizbees already have such an effect as to allow floating, which makes them ideal for what we want to accomplish. Having them melt in the distilled water is so that they are allowed less mineral content with which to bond with, and also to dilute its potency via evaporation. The dried stings were added prior so that when the much thicker sweets entered and dissolved they would already have been dispersed enough so that they would inhabit various layers. If you'll notice the powder follows the same pattern in the brew? They no longer move as radically as they did before we added the Whizbees." This was all rather exciting if I did say so myself.

When I felt enough time had lapsed, I stopped stirring and removed the spoon, reached behind me towards one of the test tube racks and also retrieving a wooden ladle. I carefully placed them next to the cauldron, and careful so as not to burn myself or the others, I lifted it off the fire and placed it on the table. I would have to be quick. With my wand, I pointed at the brew and allowed a steady stream of hot air to leave the tip and encompass the liquid's surface area. I then used the ladle to gather some of the contents and poured it into one of the test tubes. I did this several more times until I now had all of seven containers filled. "The dried Billywig stings were a means by which to reintroduce the diluted nature of the Whizbees in a more mitigated and slightly different fashion. The hot air at the end was the spell component to evenly displace the denser air throughout the brew and thus, neutralize any air bubbles that might have formed."

I pointed my wand at each tube in turn and bathed the extremities of each container in cool air for a few seconds. The liquid inside would now be warm and thick, as they would notice when I gathered the vials and started pouring into each. "This has essentially been a lesson in reducing and altering the properties of chemical components. What we should have now is a sweet syrup that temporarily nullifies the effect of weight on the body by modifying and moderately applying an upward pressure inside the drinker. You will not float, but you will feel the sensation with every step you take, relieving you of all the burdens that weight would have otherwise accrued. If my calculations are correct, you may experience a slight wave of lightheadedness after the effects wear off, but that is nothing to worry about." All of this I said as I looked toward the girl who had not given me her surname. This entire experiment had all been for her, after all.

It was time. I took care not to disturb anything still on the table before me as I walked around the table to the other side, now standing next to the group, at a respectable distance of course. I allowed my form to shift quickly, not giving them too much time to wonder what was happening. Finally, I was back in my own, glorious form, and I looked at them each with my sybilline eyes, taking in all their expressions carefully. They would notice I was smiling a genuine smile, something that was quite to the contrary of what I had led the entirety of the school to know about me. I was impossible to please and it was such a chore to deal with me, but these four had managed to make me smile despite myself. There was hope for this school yet.

Lorelai was not surprised when Green came up with some complicated answer. She didn’t really understand what he said, and by the looks of it neither the Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff had come up with the same answer. Of course, the older girl gave some long-winded explanation, that went even more over her head than Green’s explanation.

The aid began the potion, explaining along the way. Lorelai watched the cauldron, not paying very close attention to the words. Potions were cool, but the reasoning behind each step was snooze-inducing. She was happy for her new friend, who was now getting her help. Hopefully, she would be able to lose a good amount of weight, or at the least make getting around a bit better.

Out of nowhere the girl she once thought was a girl, transformed into the Potions Master. Lorelai was confused. Why would the potions master pretend to be a teenage girl? That seemed kind of creepy, and not very professional. He was also smiling like an idiot, something very out of character for him. She tried to hide her confusion, just in case there was an obvious reason and she would look like an idiot for not understanding. Instead, her face remained stoic.

“If you don’t mind me asking, professor, why exactly did you change forms?”Her tone was more respectful than the other times she spoke. Lorelai may not have cared for the rules, but she still wanted good grades. And unfortunately, the obnoxious girl she had been rude to, was actually the man who could decide her potions grades. At least he was smiling, so he wasn’t mad at them. Right?
