Oliver had only recently arrived to Hogwarts, so everything was quite overwhelming for him at the moment. His father had told him about Hogwarts, so Oliver had wanted to go there one day, but now that he was actually here, he was a little overwhelmed and nervous. First of all, the school was huge, and second of all, there were so many people. He didn’t know how to begin talking to people here, especially considering his shyness and awkwardness.

Oliver knew that, at the Muggle school he went to before Hogwarts, there had been a library that he loved. Oliver loved libraries in general, so he figured that if he could find the library at Hogwarts, it would probably become his favorite place in the school. There was something about libraries that was just incredibly relaxing. They were a perfect place to have alone time.

Eventually, after wandering in the corridors, Oliver found the library, and when he quietly headed inside, he was surprised by how beautiful it was.

Wow, this looks nothing like the library at the Muggle school I went to.

The library he had been used to was more…modern-looking, but this looked like a library you’d see in a Muggle university or something. It just looked so…fancy.

The boy eventually stopped gawking at his surroundings and went to find a place to sit. At the moment, he didn’t feel like getting any books. He simply just felt like…sitting here…for now, at least.

As she strolled the aisles of books, Alma stopped at a particularly eye-catching section of the library. Fantasy. Now that was more her cup of tea.

The Hogwarts library was breathtaking; books of all kinds everywhere, everything sorted so neatly into clean categories, you could find anything in three seconds flat! And it was magical! There were books flying over her head like birds on a sunny day! She walked down the aisle, running her finger along the smooth wood of the shelf as she looked for a book that looked interesting. She spotted one near a higher shelf; The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

She extended her arm to grab the book but she couldn’t seem to reach the shelf. Why wasn’t it coming down on its own? Wasn’t this library magic? Oh shoot, she thought. How on earth am I gonna get it down?

She stepped off of her toes and looked around for anything that could help; a stool, a ladder, maybe even a magical item that could get the book down.

She walked to the end of the aisle and saw a boy with large glasses and reddish-brown hair sitting by himself at a table. He didn’t seem to have a book, but he did look rather tall.

She took a deep breath and walked up to him.

“Hi! My names Alma, could you maybe help me grab a book? I seem to be…too short.”

Oliver was distracted from his thoughts when he heard the sound of someone else entering the library. He looked up and saw a girl who appeared to be rather short. She was also clearly looking for a book to read. By the looks of it, she also wasn’t having the easiest time with her search. In a way, Oliver couldn’t help but feel curious about what she could possibly be looking for.

Eventually, after some time, the girl seemed to notice Oliver, and started walking over to him. That was when the boy started to feel anxious. He didn’t know what to say or do.

When the girl spoke, it became clear that she needed help finding a book. Oliver almost breathed a sigh of relief, knowing it wasn’t much of a difficult task to help someone find a book. Her reasoning was that she was quite short. A small, shy smile formed on Oliver’s face.

“Y-yeah, sure! I can help you find a book. Is there any specific genre you’re looking for?”

Oliver carefully got up from his seat. Once the girl would answer him, he would help get a book for her. From a realistic perspective, Oliver wasn’t that tall himself, but for a boy his age, he definitely was. Most 11-year-olds weren’t already 5’2”. As a result, he was one of the tallest first-years.

Alma felt relieved as the boy stood and agreed to help her grab the book. He was indeed tall, proving her suspicion as she had to look up to see his eyes clearly. She cringed internally at the cliché; girl can’t reach book, tall boy comes and grabs book for her, they become best friends and/or start crushing on each other. Yuck. She really didn’t need all that at age 11. Maybe they could just be friends.

“Lovely! I already have one picked out, just this way.” She nodded her head in signal for the boy to follow her as she began walking toward the aisle.

She hoped that she didn’t look too awkward; arms folded tightly across her chest as she walked with near perfect posture with a boy she didn’t know following close behind. It would be worth it once she got her book. It did look very interesting.

She reached the aisle and pointed up at the book she wanted, getting on her tippy toes once again and reaching just to demonstrate that she indeed couldn’t reach.

“That one right there, the one that mentions Beedle the Bard. My nana on my Ma’s side always talked about that book…”

Fond memories of her nana flashed through her mind. Knitting, reading, and even sometimes singing together were some of their favorite past times. She would always take care of Alma while her parents were away on business trips or holidays. She would be proud that her granddaughter was a witch!

“Anyways, do you think you could get it down?” she snapped out of her train of thought, smiling at the boy and looking for a response.

“Lovely! I already have one picked out, just this way.”

The girl then gave a nod of her head to signal to Oliver that he was to follow her, so he did, trailing behind her as she headed over to the aisle where the book that she needed could be found. Her arms were tightly folded across her chest, and she walked with incredibly well posture. Oliver wasn’t sure if she was forcing it to look proper, or if it was just natural.

Eventually, the two kids reached the aisle. The girl pointed at the book that she wanted, and got on her tippy toes, attempting to reach the book. Sure enough, she was unable to do it. As Oliver looked at the book the girl was wanting, he could tell it was a book involving Beedle the Bard. He happened to be correct, considering the girl then said that the book she wanted indeed mentioned Beedle the Bard.

“Oh, okay, I see. That’s a good book choice.”

Oliver’s grandparents on his father’s side happened to talk about the book as well. He supposed he wasn’t the only one with fond memories related to the book.

“Anyways, do you think you could get it down?”

Oliver gave another shy smile, before nodding.

“Yeah, of course. I should be able to reach this.”

Oliver looked up at the book and reached with his arm to grab it, and then gave it to the girl.

“Here you go.”

The boy was beginning to feel less awkward, knowing that he was experiencing a positive interaction with a stranger. In fact, he had actually helped her with something, which made him feel a bit better about himself. Helping people was always a thing he enjoyed doing, as long as it was for a good reason. He would never help someone if it involved doing something bad.

Unfortunately, now that Oliver had finished the task he needed to complete, he was all awkward again, not having a clue of what to say. So, he stayed silent, hoping that the girl would be able to continue the conversation somehow, just to make things less awkward. Oliver didn’t want to just be standing there.

As she watched him reach to grab the book, Alma decided to study the boy a bit more. His hair was incredibly curly, and he had a very youthful appearance. Time for a game, she thought. Let’s see if I can guess his Hogwarts House!

She didn’t have much to go on; he was kind enough to help her get the book down, and he didn’t seem at all nervous when she had asked about the task. Maybe he was a Hufflepuff! At least they would have something in common.

“Thank you so much!” she said as the boy handed her the book. She took it and flipped through the pages, enjoying that nice ‘new book’ smell. It didn’t seem to have many pages, though it had different stories inside of it. She was very excited to read it.

She was about to walk away when something hit her like a brick wall and she immediately turned back around. “Wait…I know you! Oliver, right? You sat at the Hufflepuff table, how could i forget!” the memories came flooding back; She had sat at the table next to EmmaLee and the boy had come to sit with them!

I was right, she thought proudly. He is a Hufflepuff.

Oliver smiled again when the girl thanked him for the book, and proceeded to enthusiastically flip through the pages. It made the boy wonder if, like him, she was a bit of a bookworm herself. Oliver was a voracious reader, but he hadn’t checked out anything from the library yet because he was, well, still adjusting.

The girl then appeared to be leaving, but then turned around, appearing to realize something probably important. The reason was that she had actually recognized him, because he had sat at the Hufflepuff table. That was when a sheepish smile formed on Oliver’s face.

“Y-yeah! I’m Oliver.”

Then, that was when the girl started to look familiar to him.

“Oh! And, uh, you’re Alma, right? I also remember you from the Hufflepuff table.”

Now, he was starting to feel awkward again, and his eyes wandered around as he desperately tried to think of another thing to add to the conversation.

“I kinda find it funny that I was placed in Hufflepuff, but I suppose it makes sense. I thought I’d be in Ravenclaw because I kinda fit a good portion of Ravenclaw stereotypes.”

Oliver honestly seemed more like a Ravenclaw in his opinion when he was just getting to know someone. Most of the time, he was a bit reserved and awkward, but when he was comfortable, he did seem pretty Hufflepuff-ish.

How could she have not recognized him? She sat right across from him! She saw it now; the curly mess of hair, the large black glasses. Everything made sense to her now.

“Yeah! I’m Alma! Sorry I didn’t recognize you at first, I don’t exactly have a very photographic memory…” she chuckled nervously, embarrassed to have forgotten the boy.

She could see Oliver again begin to feel more awkward. Oh god, I hope i’m not boring him, she thought. She wondered if he’d be okay with walking around the library with her; pacing was something she’d always done when she begun to feel awkward or nervous. Maybe it would help him as well.

“Me too!” she said when Oliver finally broke the silence. “I mean don’t get me wrong, I adore Hufflepuff! It’s just that I kind of thought i’d be in Ravenclaw; my Ma’s in Ravenclaw and…well i’ve always kinda been known for my grades.” She smiled, wanting Oliver to know that she was not complaining about being in Hufflepuff. She loved this house!

She was glad they had something else in common. She was also so glad that she already knew the boy, or else this conversation would be a lot more awkward.

“Would you like to walk around the library a bit? Sorry, I get to be a bit of a pacer when i’m nervous. Maybe I could help you find a book of your own?”

When Alma had mentioned she didn’t exactly have a photographic memory, he let out a small chuckle.

“Hey, that’s fine! My memory is usually photographic, but sometimes it’s not always like that.”

Once Oliver had broken the silence, the girl mentioned that she had also originally expected to be in Ravenclaw. It wasn’t only a family thing, but it was because of her grades. Oliver remembered that his father had been in Ravenclaw.

“My dad was in Ravenclaw himself! But yeah, I don’t feel bad about being in Hufflepuff at all. Hufflepuffs seem a lot…more comfortable to be around.”

Alma then asked Oliver if he would like to walk around the library a bit. For once, his eyes actually lit up, considering he loved pacing around himself.

“Yeah, of course! I’m a bit of a pacer myself. I also tend to do it when I’m nervous.”

Plus, pacing around could potentially give Oliver the opportunity to get a book of his own. After all, he hadn’t checked out a book in the library yet. The boy was curious about what books were in this library. He guaranteed there were a lot of interesting books. He’d love to read something involving history or astronomy, those were a couple of his favorite things. He also loved stories, especially ones that didn’t seem to make much sense.

“Picking out a book would be a great idea, especially considering I haven’t had the opportunity to get one yet.”

Alma smiled and nodded her head as Oliver agreed. She began walking away from the shelves and out into the large hall in the middle of the library where all the tables sat.

“So what kind of book would you like? There are lots of options.” she gestured to the very many aisles and shelves in the room.

“Yeah, lots of genres to choose from! Except for the restricted area of course. I usually stay in the fantasy section but you can choose any section you’d like!” she smiled widely.

This seemed to be a good way of making new friends. It already helped that she and Oliver had things in common with each other. They were both in Hufflepuff, both seemed a little shy, and they were both first-years.

So far, she hadn’t met any people in Hogwarts she didn’t like! Everyone she met was wonderful! They were all so sweet and some of them were even very funny. It only made her that much more excited for the rest of the year.

And Oliver seemed like just the type of person that Alma would get along with.

“I usually hang out in the fantasy section, those are my favorite.” she said, hoping to stir up a little more conversation.
