-Jane Doe as Lady Igraine: Dying wife of King Uther Pendragon.
-Jane Doe 2 as Young Morgan le Fey: Doe-eyed girl, gifted witch, stepdaughter of King Uther Pendragon, daughter of King Uther's Wife, and half-sister to Arthur Pendragon.
-John Doe 2 as Guard: Duty-bound guard who serves the Kingdom of Camelot.
-John Doe 3 as Young Arthur Pendragon: Sportive, enthusiastic and reckless, son of King Uther Pendragon, half-brother to Morgan le Fey.

-Myself as NARRATOR: The dramatic, deep voice telling a tale.

Scene 1
A Mother's Love and a Wife's Last Wish

Castle Camelot in KING UTHER's WIFE'S bedroom.

Theater lights dim. Curtains roll open to the start of a sad refrain. Stage lights focus on the sleeping form of KING UTHER'S WIFE. Enter KING UTHER PENDRAGON, distraught at the sight of his dying wife.

UTHER: (Walks in regally; stops and kneels at the foot of the bed.) Why must I always suffer at your hands, my beautiful wife? You would leave me in this my greatest trial? What will I- (Voice cracks; holds her right hand tightly in both hands and presses forehead to hers in silence.)

IGRAINE: (Opens eyes; in a weak voice.) Dearest. Know that I have loved you with all my heart these past years, as I have my only child Morgan. I beg you, take care of her as if she were your own flesh and blood. Take care of her as you do Arthur, the sweet boy. Be the kind and gentle soul I know, and (pause then continue in little above a whisper) know even in death I will always love you.

(Her eyes close and she goes limp. A sad, soft dirge plays as Uther weeps quietly.)

NARRATOR: These are dark times in the Kingdom of Camelot. King Uther weeps as his wife draws her final breath, succumbing to an illness unknown. In her final moments, a favor she asked of her husband, the King. Mercy, she pled for her daughter. Compassion, she pled for her husband. Eternal love, she pled for her soul. The old King grew cold despite his wife's final wishes, outlawing the practice of magic in the realm, denouncing his stepdaughter's rightful claim to the throne in his death, ruling with an iron fist with no love or compassion to spare. These are truly dark times.

(The scene fades to black. END of SCENE 1)

Scene 2
A Brother's Claim and a Father's Spite

Years later in the Throne Room of Castle Camelot.

KING UTHER sits around the table with his High Council of advisors, deep in conversation. A loud crash like wood hitting stone hushes the room. Enter MORGAN LE FEY, aggrieved and wild.

MORGAN: Father!

UTHER: (Outraged) Morgan! What is the meaning of this?! You know never to interrupt my meetings.

GUARD: A thousand pardons Your Majesty. She- (Pauses and glances nervously at Morgan.) It was witchcraft. There was nothing I could do.

UTHER: (Commands him to leave with a gesture; faces Morgan from across the room.) How many times must I tell you NEVER to use your magic, especially where others can see?

MORGAN: (Repulsed) Your daughter appears before you after years at a glorified boarding school she was forced to attend, and this is the welcome she gets? (Furiously) What is this odd rumor I hear of Arthur being next in line to succeed the throne?

UTHER: (Sighs heavily) I had hoped to have you learn of this under better circumstances. Had you-

MORGAN: Why Father?! I have done nothing but be the best I could at your behest. I went willingly to that school. I never misbehaved. I never practiced the magic passed to me from my true father's blood.

(Uther rises from his wooden chair with force, causing it to screech along the stone floor and topple over.)

UTHER: (Furiously) That's enough! How dare you mention that failure of a man in my presence. (Stomps menacingly closer to her.) Why couldn't you have been normal like your mother? You and your father have caused nothing but trouble for me with your vile devilish powers. Yes! I did disinherit you, Morgan. Arthur will rule when the time comes. (Turn away from her.) I will hear no more of this. You may go.

MORGAN: I may go?! (The room starts to rumble violently; the circle of advisors rush to the back of the room in fear; Uther looks back at Morgan.) You are absolutely right about one thing father, I'm not normal like my mother. You may have stripped me of my rightful place on the throne after your untimely demise, but there is one inheritance you cannot take from me. Vengeance will be mine! Know that you brought this upon yourself and all your people Uther Pendragon! (Draw wand and begin to cast destructive spells aimed at destroying the Throne Room.)

UTHER: Morgan! Stop this madness at once! (Large debris starts to break apart from the walls and ceiling, crashing down all around the men in the room. Some larger rubble almost crushes Uther.)

MORGAN: I am Morgan, the rightful heir to the Kingdom of Camelot. (Point wand at Uther for a moment, then turn to one of the advisors. A green flash erupts from the tip and hits the man, killing him instantly. Turns to another and repeats.)

NARRATOR: Uther watches on in fear at the destruction and death at the hands of his stepdaughter Morgan, powerless to stop her. In rushes a guard, sword and shield drawn, ready to cut down the threat to His Majesty. His death was as swift as those that came before him as Morgan cast him down with her wicked spell. With a dark look marring her beautiful visage, she gave Uther a final look of promise before storming out of the Throne Room and ultimately Camelot, leaving destruction in her wake. All the Kingdom of Camelot learned the meaning of fear on that day. Entire houses were leveled. Dead bodies littered the streets. The people cried out to their King, wounded and enraged by the spilling of innocent blood at the hands of magic. Left with no choice and in fear for his kingdom and its people, he decreed that the practice of magic was forbidden by law and would be punishable by death. He went further to place a bounty on Morgan, wishing for the loss of her life before she claimed his own. On a balcony in the castle overlooking the streets from high above, a young boy of only thirteen years, the young Prince Arthur Pendragon, watched his sister's performance with uncertainty.

ARTHUR: (Portrays melancholy, speaks in a strained whisper.) Sister...

ACT 2

List of characters:

-Jane Doe as Morgan le Fey: Scorned princess turned dark witch and Camelot's greatest threat to peace. She has seized power as Queen in a kingdom fracturing its ties with England.
-John Doe as Arthur Pendragon: King of Camelot. Rules with compassion and an open mind. Has the love and support of his people.
-John Doe 2 as Merlin: A man wrapped in mystery. He heads the Order of Merlin, a group of wizards who use their magic to aid muggles. Believed to be the most powerful wizard of all time. Arthur's advisor and closest friend.

-Myself as NARRATOR: The dramatic, deep voice telling a tale.

Scene 1
Of Kings and Queens

NARRATOR: Three long years have passed, within which time the late King Uther's untimely demise, as foretold by Morgan, came to pass. His sixteen-year-old son, Arthur, now sits on the throne as Camelot's King. Having spent most of his life lavishing in frivolity and childish candor, he was far too unprepared for the new responsibilities cast upon him. He not only inherited his father's status as ruler of a powerful kingdom, but also his enemies, his debts, his grudges. The people wondered how a boy still wet behind the ears would ever manage to rule. One night while he struggled to find ways to bring order to his country, he encountered a cloaked figure. Little did he know that such a meeting marked a most pivotal point in history.

In the dead of the night inside the otherwise empty Throne Room sits a tired King Arthur, daydreaming. Enter MERLIN from thin air.

ARTHUR: (Startled; jumps from the throne and draws his sword) Who are you? How did you get past the guards?

MERLIN: I come in peace, Your Majesty. (Lowers hood and attempts a friendly smile) I am the wizard Merlin, of the Order of Merlin. I once worked with your father, the late King Uther, in a time before he outlawed all practice of magic and the good it can bring.

ARTHUR: (Relaxes slightly.) You come to me with claims of magic being a force for good when all it has ever brought me is misfortune and despair. I would ask that you leave the way you came wizard. You are not welcome here.

MERLIN: It is as you say. Magic has the power to bring about misfortune and despair, but only when wielded by human hands that wish such an outcome. Magic is as much a tool as that sword you hold. (Points to Arthur's sword.) But, consider as I do, all the beauty and prosperity that it may bring when used for good.

(Arthur pauses for a moment to consider.)

ARTHUR: (With less hostility.) My kingdom is uncertain of my rule. They do not believe me a proper fit for the throne. They think me weak, and I must confess, I have failed my people. (Skeptically) Why would you wish to help a failed king bring prosperity to his divided kingdom?

MERLIN: Because I believe you and I yearn for the same thing, Your Majesty. A peaceful kingdom ruled without prejudice and past grudges. A kingdom where all people, of magical blood or not, can live together without undue hatred and violence. (Genuflect) I come to you, the true King of Camelot, offering my knowledge and eternal service.

(Arthur considers this, walking towards Merlin, reaching a hand toward him.)

ARTHUR: Rise, Sir Merlin. (Merlin accepts the hand and stands.) May the day come when we see this kingdom of which you speak.

(The scene fades to black.)

NARRATOR: The realm has found its savior in the young King Arthur, guided by his most trusted advisor and friend Merlin. Tensions still ran high between Muggles and Wizards, but with Arthur's lifting of the ban on magical practice, the world was on the path to a tentative peace. But this peace, try as they might to grasp it, was too far from their reach. The threat of a civil war loomed over their heads like a portent of doom, its harbinger the discord in the country's governing factions. This was when Merlin availed Arthur with his knowledge of Excalibur, an ancient relic of a sword. It is said that whoever removes the sword from its stone will be a true King of England, never to see his Kingdom fall. A myth most would say, as many have tried and all have failed. Arthur, armed with determination to mend his broken kingdom and a pure and true heart, traveled to London with his Court to bear witness to his attempt. The sword seemed to rise into his hands as he pulled, much to the amazement of himself and all who watched. By sword attested, by stone revealed, he was the true King of England, a beacon of hope for a united future of prosperity that all wished for. Unbeknownst to anyone present, a powerful enemy in the form of a bird spied in silence, as they had been since Arthur's ascension to the throne.

(The scene unfurls with Morgan sitting on a throne in her castle in Avalon, an island off the coast of England that serves as a sanctuary for witches and wizards who share her aptitude for the dark arts, along with Muggles who support her claim to the throne of Camelot either willingly or out of fear.)

NARRATOR: Within a castle in Avalon we follow Morgan, the new Queen who has severed her country's ties with England. A war council has been convened with her most trusted advisors that consist of Wizards and Muggles alike.

MORGAN: (Slams hands on the table and rises from chair with a screech.) Enough! I have seen with my own eyes what my fool of a half-brother has done. He now holds the fabled sword Excalibur and his people's loyalty has bolstered to sycophancy. It is truly sickening. I have asked you all here not to question whether or not we should go to war, but to answer the question of when and how we do it. Am I to believe that I am surrounded by coddled babes?

NARRATOR: The room fell silent. No one dared utter a word, which only served to vex Morgan further.

MORGAN: If it wasn't for that wizard that scrapes at my brother's feet I would have already killed Arthur and taken back what is rightfully mine. He confounds me at every turn. (Points to a dark wizard near the far end of the meeting table) You! How do you propose we skirt around the obvious threat, Merlin, to get to Arthur?

NARRATOR: The man opened his mouth as if to speak, but no words came. In a flash of green and a soundless scream, his corpse prostrated itself on the floor next to the table.

MORGAN: (Puts wand away.) Correct. Other dark witches and wizards will serve as a distraction, challenging Merlin on the battlefield while I seek Arthur and kill him myself.

NARRATOR: To her followers, Morgan appeared unhinged, driven mad by her denunciation as Camelot's Queen. So strong was her bloodlust that she was blinded to the reality that a war for the Kingdom she believed to be hers would only turn its people against her as an outside threat come to lay siege. Her advisors had no say in what she had decided, but all would take part in a battle so great that it would leave ripples in the very fabric of history.

(The scene fades to black. END of SCENE 1)

Scene 2
The Battle of Avalon

(The scene unfurls with sparks of magic flying in every which direction, the screams of thousands of men and women locked in fierce combat, the clangs of swords and shields against their counterparts, and the bloody realization of death en masse.)

NARRATOR: The Battle of Avalon rages on, neither side willing to relent. True to her plan, Morgan's servants engage Merlin in combat, preventing him from escaping to Arthur's side. There were witches and wizards that fought with Arthur, along with his legendary Knights of the Round, but none were a match for Morgan's masterful spellwork. Sparks of green erupted from her wand as she killed one after the other that dared stand in her way. Soon she and her brother saw each other face to face for the first time in years.

MORGAN: (With venom.) Arthur!

ARTHUR: (With longing.) Morgan... You can still stop this. Call off your forces. Come back to Camelot with me.

MORGAN: (Lowers wand in false contemplation.) Truly, brother? After everything that I have done. Would you still forgive me?

ARTHUR: (Lowers sword; wears a wary smile.) I have already forgiven you, Morgan. Send them a sign. Let them know you no longer wish to fight and I will do the same.

MORGAN: (Laughs bitterly.) Always so gullible Arthur, blind to the true intentions of those who surround you. Your own subjects cannot be trusted. You are unfit to be king! (Points wand and fires off a green spark at Arthur.)

NARRATOR: So marked the beginning of the first true duel between a Witch and a Muggle. The magic imbued in Excalibur was all that protected Arthur from Morgan's death curse as he parried the spark of light. He began to press his advance, parrying all manner of curse, hex, and jinx thrown his way from Morgan or her few dark witches and wizards that managed to break away from their own engagements long enough to cast at him. Morgan found herself retreating while on the offensive, killing any who strayed too close while attempting to slow the advance of Arthur and his enchanted sword. He was soon upon her, close enough to impale her and put an end to this war. Arthur lunged with a fierce battle cry, his aim true. He erred in gauging the true scope of her power. Right before him, she transformed fully into a bird, flying high above him in circles. Arthur watched on, earthbound and unable to strike her. All around him the battle raged on in earnest, forcing him to engage a new throng of enemies that met him in combat, thus causing him to lose sight of Morgan in her new form. Facing his newest set of foes, Arthur noticed not the female figure materializing behind him. A bright flash of green light collided with his armored form, knocking him high into the air before he landed; dead.

MORGAN: (Laughs hysterically; places wand's tip to her throat) Arthur is dead! Bow before your rightful Queen!

NARRATOR: All around the battle came to a gradual pause as her voice, and ultimately her words carried to every corner of the battlefield. Merlin, much as he had during their first encounter, appeared before Arthur from thin air, kneeling beside his limp form. The anger inside him welled like a volcano on the edge of eruption. The duel was one for the ages. The clash of magic between the powerful witch and wizard held everyone spellbound. Such feats of magical prowess the likes of which had never been seen encompassed the battlefield as the two fought with more deadly force than their entire armies could begin to fathom even in their teeming numbers. Morgan never saw her true dream come to fruition, soon becoming overwhelmed by Merlin's own display of power. Her death and the death of her entire army by Merlin's hands ended the Battle of Avalon. The cost had been great, Camelot was stripped of both its King and its would-be Queen in one fell swoop. The people wept for their King.

(The scene fades to black. END of SCENE 2.)

Scene 3
Avalon In Oblivion

The scene unfurls to the people toiling to rebuild after the destruction wrought during the Battle of Avalon.

NARRATOR: And so our epic comes to an end. King Arthur is dead. Queen Morgan is dead. Only Merlin still stands, carrying on in his endeavors to see his and Arthur's mutual dreams realized. It was a practice in patience that proved in vain. The Muggles would never come to see Wizardkind and their exploitation of magic as anything but dangerous and something to be condemned. Witch hunts for all those suspected and accused of practicing magic ran rampant until the Statute of Secrecy of 1692 that separated Muggles and Wizards, barring and hiding the wizard community from the world. To this day Muggles and Wizards do not associate openly, and the truth to past events that transpired and brought about so much change has been diminished to no more than a legend told as mere fiction passed down through the ages by Muggle-kind. The wizarding community grants them this reprieve, forever keeping the truth behind a veil.

(The scene fades to black. END of SCENE 3)
