Milkshakes and Mishaps
Ellie was happily surprised Lillian seemed to open up more. Even though she didn’t share the same sentiment about camp, it was nice to hear her be genuine. She completely understood where she was coming from. Over the last couple of years, her parents had her attend muggle camps too. They didn’t have the desired impact that her parents wanted. Just like in school she stood close to her brother and buried in books. Her reasoning? She would say she just wanted to get through her summer reading. The reality was that she felt most safe exploring the different worlds in her books.
“I can understand wanting to stay home. I am excited to start seeing what the magical world has to offer. The activities they have sound fun. I am thinking of taking part in the Mutiny-Wolf game. I really like mysteries and think it would be fun trying to figure out who the wolves are.”
She could sense that she was talking a bit too much about a subject that Lillian probably didn’t care for, but that is what tended to happen when she started talking about something she was interested in.
“So sorry, I can get carried away. I hope that the camp pleasantly surprises you.”
“I can understand wanting to stay home. I am excited to start seeing what the magical world has to offer. The activities they have sound fun. I am thinking of taking part in the Mutiny-Wolf game. I really like mysteries and think it would be fun trying to figure out who the wolves are.”
She could sense that she was talking a bit too much about a subject that Lillian probably didn’t care for, but that is what tended to happen when she started talking about something she was interested in.

"I'd be thankful for a pleasant surprise at camp. That's pretty much the opposite of what I'm expecting," Lillian said with a laugh. "I'm not the biggest fan of mysteries. I think that game would just stress me out." Her voice lowered uncertainly when she said that. She didn't really like disagreeing with people, especially over something so minor. She knew it didn't make much sense, or, really, any sense, but she couldn't help it.
"It might be okay. I'll be happy if wizards have s'mores too, but I'm not really holding my hopes up. I think they might think it's too Muggle-like for them." She stopped abruptly, clamping her mouth shut. What if Ellie's that kind of wizard? Hastily, she continued. "I guess wizards would have a magical substitute." She hoped that was good enough. Sensing that she was talking a little bit too much, she quietened now, deciding to let Ellie take the lead in this conversation.

It took Ellie a moment to take in everything that Lillian had said. She was getting the impression that Lillian didn’t know much about the magical world and that gave her mixed feelings. She was most concerned that Lillian seemed to have animosity towards it. It was sad because Ellie had a much different upbringing.
Ellie’s parents always made sure that her and her brother knew all they could know about both the Magical and Muggle worlds. She realized that she was very fortunate to have parents like that.
Ellie smiled and tried her best to address everything.
“From what my mom has described, food is pretty much the same, with some exceptions of course. I’m sure you’ll find treats you will like at the camp.
As for quidditch, I don’t know too much about the game. My mom didn’t play it when she attended, so she couldn’t tell me much. I imagine it’s not for me.” Ellie let out a little laugh.
“I’m not exactly the athletic type. Are you looking forward to it?” Ellie said with curiosity. She had the impression this was the first magical thing that Lillian might like and wanted to know more. Maybe Lillian can tell her more about the game.

Lillian flushed scarlet in embarrassment when Ellie said there weren't many differences between wizard and Muggle food. She had no idea why she assumed there would be. Her mother was relatively open about the magical world, but she wasn't the type to tell stories without being asked. Most of what Lillian knew of the magical world was from her siblings recounts of Hogwarts and the few stories her mother told her. From Lillian's perspective the magical world was a completely different world, with different cultures and traditions. They didn't even use cars! Sure, brooms were fast, but road trips were fun!
Lillian shook her head when Ellie asked about her view on Quidditch, trying to make it seem like she knew all about the sport but didn't like it. Truthfully, she had never really listened to her brother's stories about Quidditch; his words went through one ear and out the other.
"I think I'm all right as an athlete, but sports don't really interest me. I don't really like most of them. They seem pretty pointless to me, but I might explore my options later."
Ellie had talked about her mother's experience at Hogwarts, and Lillian was quite curious to know what Hogwarts was like in past times. Ellie wasn’t expecting that Lillian wasn’t interested in quidditch, but relieved because there wasn’t too much she could add to the conversation with regards to sports.
“My mom always spoke about the magical world, but she didn’t want to give too much away about Hogwarts, so that we could have our own adventures and discover things for ourselves. The things she did mention, she did so fondly. She said that she made a lot of lasting friendships. Although I think she would say that mostly to help put my anxiety at ease.”
Ellie took a moment to think about all the stories she’s heard from her mom.
“She did say that she was most interested in Muggle studies though. After Hogwarts, she’d use any excuse to get involved in Muggle activities. And that’s how she met my dad.”
Ellie wondered what Lillian did know and if maybe she had more family members that attended.
“Do you have any siblings that attended or attend?”
She patiently waited for Lillian’s response and took that last sip of her delicious Blueberry milkshake. She wanted to savor the last bit and wondered if she should consider grabbing something else since she did lose half of her dessert.

Lillian hesitated for a second when Ellie spoke. Her mother was interested in Muggle Studies, and that was how her parents had met. She wondered if that meant her dad was a Muggle or if he was a wizard who just so happened to know a lot about Muggles. She was relieved when Ellie didn't ask about her own lineage.
"My brother and sister attended. One was a Ravenclaw, and one's a Slytherin. They've only told me good things about Hogwarts, but I'm sure that was just to ease my worries, kind of like how your mother did for you. My mother doesn't really talk about her childhood, so most of the information I received was from my siblings. I don't expect the school to stay the way it was when our mothers were our age, so maybe it's for the best that we weren't being fed outdated information."
She suddenly realized that Ellie's news of Hogwarts seemed to only be provided from her mother, and hastily tried to cover up her mistake, not wanting to cause Ellie to be concerned about Hogwarts. "I'm sure it'll be fine. I've heard they have a higher tolerance for half-bloods and Muggleborns than other schools, so they must have a higher tolerance for most things." She didn't mention that she was a half-blood herself, passing it off as a nonchalant comment. It was true. She might be a bit biased, but she did believe Hogwarts might be the best place for a half-blood like her to attend.

Ellie was surprised that Lillian used the word tolerance. For Ellie, she didn’t experience intolerance and assumed it didn’t exist from growing up in a mixed household. Even Ellie’s grandparents had grown to love Ellie’s dad, long before they were even born. She wasn’t even expecting that it would be a possibility that someone might treat her differently for being a half-blood.
She wasn’t really sure what to say next, but what Lillian said did cause a bit of concern. She was deep in her thoughts and realized her brows were beginning to furrow. She didn’t want Lillian to take it personally.
“I’m sure we don’t have anything to worry about” She said with the best smile she could muster up. This was her best attempt at reacting as she expected her brother would in the same situation.
And then it occurred to her, her brother was still not there. She was sure that he must’ve got lost along the way and figured she should probably start looking for him before it was time for them to meet with their mother.
“I’m going to have to look for my brother. He often gets lost and we are supposed to meet up with our mom when she gets off work. I am really glad we met and again I am sorry about the spill. I hope we will get to see each other during the camp activities.”
